We stopped by for their Ube cake but we also happened to buy some Ube bread and Ube and chocolate chip cookies. The cookies were absolutely amazing!! They're my favorite type of texture - a little crisp but a gooey and soft middle part. I've never had a mixture of these two flavors before and I'd love to go back again. We ordered ahead of time and the staff made it really easy to order and pick up our cakes. It's a great small Filipino bakery shop that also offers breakfast bowls that I wish I could've tried while I was there. They really give it a great, mom and pop feel to the place. Gemmae's is the spot for all your Filipino cravings! As soon as you walk into the shop, the scent of baked goodies, desserts and food just hits you smack dab in the face - in the best way possible :P The variety of goodies they have to offer is glorious. I forgot to ask the worker what the dish was called, but after much research, I think it was chicken asado -someone please correct me if I'm wrong. CHICKEN ASADO (chicken with pickles): 10/10! - the flavors were out of this world. There were big pieces of bone-in chicken chunks with hot dog pieces and carrots. I also found a piece of dill pickle which was surprising, but the flavors all complemented each other so perfectly. I tasted a lot of garlic and onion - so amazing! She also asked if I wanted extra gravy/sauce on the rice - yes please! A definite must! The dish was a little sweet and savory with a tang to it. *drooling as I write this review* UBE CHEESECAKE: 8/10! - this is what everyone comes for! Ube cheesecake is one of the first things I tried at Gemmae's. It's super soft, creamy and have a nice chew/texture to it. amazeballs! The flavors work well together with the buttery graham cracker crust. My mom wanted to check this place out after getting my new tires for my car from a warehouse nearby. So we thought there would be seating available since they do sell hot food items, but when we got inside they only had takeout available for those foods. We stuck with getting some of the baked goods and desserts they had available, which included pan de sal, Sans Rival, turon, white chocolate walnut ube cookie, empanada, and some other items that my mom grabbed. The empanada was definitely the odd one out of the bunch we got since it tasted more like a hand pot pie then the typical empanadas we have had. It tasted good though, just was surprised hehe I was able to try a bit of the cookie and it was pretty good. I like ube, especially Ube pastries, and It's always good to support a local business in Long Beach, CA. However, I would not recommend to go this place. The cashier gladly makes you wait after unfriendly glancing at you if you only buy pastries, no matter if the store is crowded or slow. Their focus is Food-to-go section. Cashiers eager to sell food to go with only 2 customers in a line early 8am in the morning while making me wait 10 minutes with no sorry or thank you. This is the 3rd time already. I stopped here 3 times and it happened 3 times. Let alone, the store was stuffing; the smell will stick on you after waiting so long in the store. I guess it's not always good to support local business when I don't get basic customer service. The fact that they pay to get on social media and Food influencers channel, I expect a the store do better than this. Maybe consider training your staffs before putting the business out there. Gemmae's has always been our go-to when it comes to family parties. We usually order the ube cheesecake and lumpia for pickup. The flavor and quality are always consistent, so we always go back. The online ordering system is very convenient; thus, picking it up at specific times has never been a problem! They use real ube, not those powder kinds they use at boba shops. I know.. I grew up mixing ube during fiestas in Silang, Cavite. The lumpia is excellent, too! The size is bigger than the typical lumpia from other Filipino joints. The inside of Gemmae's is excellent. However, there is no indoor dining, and it's solely for pick-up. One thing to note is the parking. It's situated in a small lot and can get full quickly. But there's plenty of free parking in the street. I will keep coming back here for our orders. The customer service is excellent, and the food/dessert is fantastic! read more

Let me start this off by saying Gemmae's food is delicious. Lumpia? Heavenly. Pastries? To die for. Catering food? Bomb. However, their service leaves something to be desired. We had put in a sizable catering order a week ahead of time for pick up for a small elopement celebration. They called me at 4pm the DAY BEFORE the order was supposed to be picked up to move the pick up time 2 hours earlier since they were going to be closing early, meaning the food would have to be left out that long before guests could eat it. A change to an order at 4PM the day before an event, in my opinion, is unacceptable - especially for catering. It is too late to order from a different place at that point. We were told that they couldn't accommodate a later time. We scrambled and tried to find a different place to order from, to no avail since it was so last minute. We called them back to cancel and they all of a sudden could accommodate the original time. When we went to pick up the order, a large tray of rice was missing. If you're familiar with Filipino food, you KNOW the rice is crucial lol. The food, overall, was enjoyed by everybody. I was sent a IG reel about this place from quite a few friends and seeing all the Ube baked goodies was enough for me to make the trip here. We went on a Saturday morning around 9:30am. As I got closer to take a look, I could see the oil floating on top and it didn't look like the food was hot enough. So, I decided not to order anything. I felt like it was a waste of a drive and walk out empty handed so I ended up buying one of the Ube white chocolate cookies. I asked the girl behind the counter if she knew when they were gonna restock their shelves with bread and pastries and she said it depends when their baker will be in. Huh? She said maybe the baker will come in Sunday (which was the following day). Um ok. I was confused. Does this mean that there isn't a consistent day or time when the "baker" shows up? They also have a curated grocery selection. My husband wanted to try their Lumpia, but you can only buy a minimum of 25 pieces at a time. He asked if they have any combo plates which included them, and the woman working rudely said no. He went ahead and got 25 (way more than he wanted or needed), but ended up loving them. I was a disappointed that they did not have any coffee aside from bottled Starbucks Frappuccinos, but it was hard to be mad about anything after I tasted their Twin Chip Ube Cookie. It was the best chocolate chip cookie I've ever had. Ultra soft-baked and buttery, the ube half had white chocolate chips, and the classic side had milk chocolate chips. I have also tried their Ube Ensaymada, which is huge and decadent, topped with shredded cheese, and filled with a whipped cream and their own ube halaya. Their pastries, cakes and food are so tasty. My mom ordered our bridal shower and wedding cakes from here. Vanilla cake with strawberry filling and vanilla cake with mango filling. Everyone loved both so much. I come here whenever my family has that Filipino food craving. Yes, I'm a Filipina. No, I don't cook Filipino food except for a dish or three. I'm not a big bakery foodie, but I had a party to go to, and I wanted to bring something different and unique. I looked up this place and this bakery came up so I decided to make the trek over. It's not in the best of neighborhoods and it took me over 40 minutes to find parking. I finally found parking in a residential area and had to walk while a homeless person followed me and that wasn't gonna be good for him because I have a black belt. Onto the bakery! I love anything Ube!! I got an assortment of different Ube sponge cakes, slice of Ube cheesecake, and some Ube cookies. It turned out that I was a bigger fan of the Ube cheesecake than the rest. I got a whole Ube sponge cake and heard it was good. In summary, I feel like if they were located in a better neighborhood plus using real Ube (charge for it!) rather than Ube extract would have been better. I work down the street from here and I ordered a tray of egg rolls online which was very convenient. I made the order and paid online then showed up and picked up my order. It was an easy process. The egg rolls were nice and crispy, it also comes with the sweet and sour sauce. My coworkers loved it and even one of my coworkers ordered a tray a week after I did. Also, on a side note, my husband came here to get a lot of ube items for my birthday. We had ube cheesecake, ube butter, and ube pan de sal. Bakery with hot food as well. It's a small, hole in the wall feel but have genuine Filipino food! Hot foods- this reminds me of home cooked food. No frills but just plain good. My kids loved it and very reasonably priced with decent portions Bakers goods- the ube filling of their rolls and ensamada were great. ***THIS ESTABLISHMENT REFUSED TO ALLOW MY SERVICE ANIMAL INSIDE*** I came here on 4/16/23 at around 12:30pm to pick up lunch with my fiancé and our service animal. I asked my fiancé to hold my service animal dog instead of having him walk in as the place looked really crowded. As we were waiting in line, one of the employees with black hair tied up in a pony tail asked us to take our dog outside because "they do not allow pets". Although she asked nicely, I did not want to make a scene because I am tired of arguing with people back and forth and feeling discriminated against so I quietly asked my fiancé to step outside with our service animal while I waited inside to place our order. FYI - The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) stipulates that individuals with disabilities are entitled to broad public access for their service dogs. Unless there is a legitimate safety concern, the animals are allowed to accompany their handlers to stores, restaurants, buses--any place open to the public. Businesses and organizations that serve the public have a responsibility to serve all their customers equally well. It is also not mandatory either under California or federal rules to have an identification card or vest on our Service Dog. I will not be returning to this business to place any future orders and I will be SURE to file a complaint against this business by submitting a report on the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division website today. Update 4/22/23 to business owner response: Your staff quickly made the assumption my dog was a pet. For your information, a public place can ask only two questions to determine if that individual's dog is a service dog: 1) whether the dog is required because of a disability, and 2) what work the dog is trained to perform. I drove from Costa Mesa to Long Beach to checkout this restaurant, I heard such great reviews...my expectations were exactly what I thought, it's outstanding place the lumpia were so amazing I bought 25 to try them I wasn't disappointed at all wish now I should've order more .. I also had the beef stew with potato.. the sauce was so delicious.. order cake slice and macaroon cookies.. I definitely will be going back to pick up another order of lumpia for sure ..
