Just grabbed random goods while the rest got lunch. I've never had anything too bad from here. We typically get lumpia trays for work. What I got this time: -Biskotso. Nice and crispy -Brazo de Mercedes. A bit dry on the outside, but didn't expect much because it wasn't a full cake/loaf. Expected to be dryish -Sinagang. Not a lot of meat. Only a few pieces. Casual to go bakery with a hot bar. The Une everything is delicious. My boyfriend loves the cheesecake. I come for the savory dishes mostly. Make sure you order your lumpia ahead of time. I've been here when there was some for sale in the hot bar and other times was told it was order ahead only, so better safe than sorry. The chicken empanadas are freaking amazing. It's not what I grew up with where the dough is like pie dough. This is more of a buttery flakey croissant style bread filled with chicken pot pie style chicken, gravy, and veggies. Been to this a lot of times since the 90's. Food is ok. Just went to this morning at this place again and ordered a large Beefsteak and a combo breakfast. Container was small for large order of beefsteak and their extra large is like medium size compared to other Pilipino store like American Ranch in Cerritos which have more selections of food and better food. I was wrong.... I thought that Gemmae bake shop was any other Filipino bakery. It is not. As I bite into an ensaymada, I'm thinking this is going to be dry, like any other ensaymada, I WAS WRONG. It's moist, flavorful, soft, and most importantly, not too sweet. I had the ube macapuno ensaymada. I'm so upset I only got one. I also got the pistachio sans rival and omg, heaven. I don't even like nuts. I truly believe the daughter changed the way this bakery was ran because it's the softest ensaymada I've ever had. Nothing else compares. I'm coming back next week. What's up: Once again, I was on the hunt for an ube cake! After some searching on Google, I came across this family owned shop in Long Beach (they've been here for 30 years!). Parking: I was warned and it was true...Parking was pretty terrible. It's small, shared among businesses, and packed full of cars. Street parking is probably your best bet. Even then, Easy Ave was full of cars and I had to park about a block away on W 25th street. Environment: Staff members were friendly. They have hot foods, frozen foods, and other baked goods available. No seating available, you're there to grab and go. I had placed an order ahead of time using their website so when I walked up to the counter, I told them I was picking up a cake. The staff member got the cake, confirmed the message I wanted to write on the cake, and took it to the back to do just that. A short wait later, she returned and off I went. What was ordered: - Ube Cheesecake (absolutely delicious with yummy ube in every bite. I'm usually not a fan of cheesecake, but this was pretty good. They wrote the requested birthday message on it and even added sprinkles!) Yay/Nay/Meh: Yay. This was such a great find! Everyone loved the cake and it was so pretty and yummy. Only downside is the parking situation. I spent more time looking for parking and walking to and from the place than the actual pickup. Credit cards are accepted. read more

I got Tik-Toked so I was excited and expectatioms set high. !I got the beef empanada and was disappointed, which probably set the tone for everything else. The middle was cold, but the outside layer was hot and crispy. I also got the ube ensaymada and was just as disappointed. Would I come back? Any good Filipino knows where to find a good pan de sal, mamon, or ensaymada. No matter where you're born, whether on the island or here in the states, it eventually calls to you. Thankfully, one day, the call came in a form of a reel on Instagram. There was a bakery in Long Beach that was making ube flavored and colored pastries of Filipino classics and I had to try it. I got all my usual stuff to try, a bag of pan de sal and a basketful of ensaymada. Then there's the non traditional things we got like ube cheesecake and ube banana cream pie. The pan de sal was perfect...just a little bit of sweetness and the right shape, fluff, and a good amount of breadcrumbs on top. While checking out, I noticed they had filled pan de sals. I opted for the longaniza pan de sal, which was the perfect handheld meal after a long drive. The longaniza wasn't as sweet as I liked, but still good. If only they could squeeze a fried egg in there. While ube has gotten mainstreamed into American culture, this was the first time I've ever seen it in ensaymada form. The soft brioche like buns were so purple and had the right amount of ube flavor. Sometimes ube can overpower and make something a little too sweet. This was just enough. Ube banana cream pie wasn't something I expect to see, but it totally works. The ube cream filling with ripe bananas on top was a great little dessert. In this case, it was a little too sweet, but the flavors all work. It all rests on a traditional graham cracker crust, but it would have been cooler if they made it out skyflakes or otap. They also have a hot food bar if you want some traditional Filipino dishes. We were just passing through and didn't have time to eat, but coming from a family that made some of the best Filipino food, everything looked legit. While there are bigger Filipino bakeries around and closer, the food here is just as good, but still feels like a nanay and tatay kind of place. Great Filipino food and bakery here! Bakery wise: The pan de sal is great, as is any of their Ube breads or loafs. I'm a sucker for the Ube pan de sal. If you're looking to try their food/breakfast, make sure to get there early. I've gone twice within an hour of their opening and they were already out or close to our in certain items. Food overall was decent, not the best I've had but I liked it. Overall recommended and a good place to try out if you're in the mood for some good Filipino food. read more

Food is always great. I got this Ube Ensaymada today that I really like. This is just a new addition to their products. It's really good with Ube chunks and the butter on top makes it perfect. This place has some great Filipino pastries. Their selection of Filipino foods from empanadas to turon and even custards are quite extensive. Their selection halo halo is also a high recommend. The staff and the atmosphere is nice at Gemmae's. I plan on coming back (not only since it's local to me) for a long long time. read more

A taste of the Philippine Islands We thought we'd start our day getting some baked goods at this bakery. They had a variety of Filipino breads, desserts, and cakes on display (they also do custom cakes). Available also for the month of April was longanisa pandesal sold at $3/piece. We got a couple of them and it tasted pretty good. Hubby really liked it. After browsing through the pastries, rolls, cakes we came to the hot foods section offering traditional Filipino dishes. That's it... we're having Bistek at 8:00a in the morning. Bistek is a popular common dish in the Philippines and is eaten over white rice. This Filipino dish is made of thinly-sliced beefsteak braised in soy sauce, calamansi juice, garlic, ground black pepper, and onions (cut into rings). omg I've not had this in awhile and it was delicious. It was a toss up between this and the Pork Sinigang. For a $9.50 combo plate they give you two scoops of rice and a generous serving of that Bistek. The employees were courteous and helpful. I was feening for some flip food but by the time my BFF and I came, they only had minimal choices (that's ok tho). Food: went almost at closing time. Only grabbed bakery items (ube pie, ube & macapuno ensaymada, cheese ensaymada, and beef empenadas). Beef empenadas had peas but it was still oh so good. Bakery items are drool-worthy. Service: friendly and busy towards closing time which to me is the best compliment. Ambiance: clean and spacious. My BFF and I were extremely envious that other patrons were eating their lumpia orders in front of us cuz that's what I was really coming for. But they only do catering orders (minimum 25 pieces). At the heart of west side LBC, Gemmae never disappoints. I love coming here on the weekends after a 12hr shift at the hospital to grab a fresh bag of pan de sal to bring home. On top of that, they serve Filipino breakfast and never disappoints. Don't underestimate this bakery, although size wise the shop is tiny, they really do put in the power and effort to delivery quality food and baked goods. Make sure to try it out! read more

GEMMAE BAKE SHOP is located in a strip mall with a limited but free parking lot. There was no line to get in and no line to order. The staff were all very helpful and kind. All the breads were fresh fluffy and moist. UBE PARTY BREAD and UBE MACAPUNO PARTY BREAD were delicious. The UBE BREAD is a brioche type (calling it "type" coz it's soft as brioche but I don't really know if it is) with generous chunks and dollops of ube halaya in the midst -- think generously sprinkled with raisins, but instead of raisins, you get giant chunks of ube. The UBE MACAPUNO ENSAYMADA was delicious and is even better hen you warm it up in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Super soft, lots of butter on top. Giant portion. Same with the UBE PANDAN ENSAYMADA. Yum. The UBE OVERLOAD COOKIE was awesome. The chopped pistachio was a nice foil to the sweetness of the ube. This was an awesome experience, I bought 12 longanisa stuffed pandesal buns and 50 pork Shanghai lumpia, and due to my mess up was late picking up my order. They closed at 4 and I had just gotten there at 4:05. They were amazing enough to wait for me, here is the kicker, I'm from the Bay Area, and I was picking this order up on my way home, let me tell you the food was amazing. I got home and the first thing I did was pop one of the buns in the microwave. It was so damn good. Thank you Gemmae bake shop. This place is a must-visit in Long Beach! We tried this bake shop last Saturday and stepped in to a store with an assortment of baked goods, bags of Pan de Sal, and a large hot food section. We grabbed the Pan de Sal and headed over to the hot food bar, where I got a chicken combination plate, which came with the chicken and a few scoops of rice. The service was excellent, as they explained what was in each dish, a necessity for a non-Filipino like myself. The chicken was great, as there were some large bone-in pieces along with carrots, peas, and peppers. The flavor was amazing, reminiscent of a Vietnamese ga ro ti. I'm checking out Gemmae after hearing about it from friends. We picked up a bag of pan de coco, some Ube butter, and some empanadas. We went to try the cookies but they were sold out so I'll have to go back again another time. I arrived around 1pm and a lot of shelves and serving trays were empty. The lady behind the counter said if I came back after 330pm, they might have more stuff. Oh well. Next time. I'm not surprised when a bakery runs out of stuff by the early afternoon, especially if they only bake once in the early morning. The empanadas were warm, flakey and moist and were gone really quickly. The pan de cocos were not exactly what we expected but still good. They have a good amount of sweet, shredded coconut in them but there was no creamy "filling" (which is what we were expecting). The Ube butter paired well with the pan de coco as did a cup of coffee. I look forward to visiting again and trying more of their menu. Having only tried 3 items, my review is somewhat limited but I hope to upgrade it to a 5 if they impress us again on our next visit (my Filipino partner will weigh in more with his criticisms of authenticity when he's able to try more savory items). Parking tip: Gemmae is located in a strip mall just off the freeway and parking is tight. Even though there are 2 driveways, only the one on Willow is 2-way. The side one off of Easy is one way (into the lot) only--don't go the wrong way as it may result in a lot of honking and upset ppl. We only went for the pastries. However, everything we picked up was delicious. We had the Ube cheesecake, Ube cookies, Longanisa pandesal, and the Bibingka. Although we arrived before 8 am on a Sunday, not all the baskets and refrigerators were fully stocked. There were only a handful of Ube cheesecakes, one variety of Hopia and no more plain Mamon. However, the hot food trays were fully stocked. Since we came before the adjacent businesses opened, the parking lot with its 20 or spaces was clear of trash and almost empty. Inside the store, the floors shined and was well lit to highlight the well arranged products. We stopped by for their Ube cake but we also happened to buy some Ube bread and Ube and chocolate chip cookies. The cookies were absolutely amazing!! They're my favorite type of texture - a little crisp but a gooey and soft middle part. I've never had a mixture of these two flavors before and I'd love to go back again. We ordered ahead of time and the staff made it really easy to order and pick up our cakes. It's a great small Filipino bakery shop that also offers breakfast bowls that I wish I could've tried while I was there. They really give it a great, mom and pop feel to the place. I like ube, especially Ube pastries, and It's always good to support a local business in Long Beach, CA. However, I would not recommend to go this place. The cashier gladly makes you wait after unfriendly glancing at you if you only buy pastries, no matter if the store is crowded or slow. Their focus is Food-to-go section. Cashiers eager to sell food to go with only 2 customers in a line early 8am in the morning while making me wait 10 minutes with no sorry or thank you. This is the 3rd time already. I stopped here 3 times and it happened 3 times. Let alone, the store was stuffing; the smell will stick on you after waiting so long in the store. I guess it's not always good to support local business when I don't get basic customer service. The fact that they pay to get on social media and Food influencers channel, I expect a the store do better than this. Maybe consider training your staffs before putting the business out there. As soon as you walk into the shop, the scent of baked goodies, desserts and food just hits you smack dab in the face - in the best way possible :P The variety of goodies they have to offer is glorious. So many delectable and mouthwatering items to choose from. I usually come for their UBE CHEESECAKE and other sweets. I came on a Sunday around lunch time and finally decided to grab a rice plate for the first time. Staff are usually always helpful and friendly - always a plus in my book! The shop is neat, clean and roomy. The parking lot is decent, and you can be in and out within minutes after grabbing your food. I believe their dishes changes daily depending on what they want to cook that day. The options are endless. I'm still fairly new to Filipino food, but I'm glad I was able to try a chicken dish. It was around $8 for one chicken item, which also comes with two hefty scoops of white jasmine rice. Honestly, I was so indecisive about what entree i wanted! :O everything just looked so good. In the end, I decided to go with a chicken dish which I think is chicken asado. I forgot to ask the worker what the dish was called, but after much research, I think it was chicken asado -someone please correct me if I'm wrong. CHICKEN ASADO (chicken with pickles): 10/10! - the flavors were out of this world. There were big pieces of bone-in chicken chunks with hot dog pieces and carrots. I also found a piece of dill pickle which was surprising, but the flavors all complemented each other so perfectly. I tasted a lot of garlic and onion - so amazing! She also asked if I wanted extra gravy/sauce on the rice - yes please! A definite must! The dish was a little sweet and savory with a tang to it. *drooling as I write this review* UBE CHEESECAKE: 8/10! - this is what everyone comes for! Ube cheesecake is one of the first things I tried at Gemmae's. It's super soft, creamy and have a nice chew/texture to it. amazeballs! The flavors work well together with the buttery graham cracker crust. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone who loves Filipino food or anyone who is adventurous and want to try something new!
