We ordered the frog pot. There are other meat selection like chicken, beef, etc etc. It came out of a hot wok and transferred onto a portable cook top. Meal included 2 bowls of rice & spicy/sour soup. You get to pick 2 side to add into your pot, such as bean sprouts, rice cake, beans, tofu, & more. The food is ok. Ok in terms of the quality, taste, portion, and pricing. Service was a bit on the low side..hopefully they pick things up a bit or perhaps hire 1 more server. Wow - mala dry pot was so delicious! First time trying this place and we've been back 2 more times! So tasty. My favorite mala dry pot place is in Flushing, New York Chinatown and this comes in at a close second out of all the places we've tried (and we've tried plenty!). Mom and pop shop, so glad they're around! Portions are generous and the cuts of lamb were tender and tasty (we preferred the lamb over the beef and fish, but all were good). read more

I didn't order by phone because I was afraid there would be misunderstandings so I ordered in person. I pointed at the items I wanted while the owner didn't even bother looking at what I was pointing to. Guess what? He got my order wrong. For $70 and tip, I'm a bit upset. Food is good but... I came out during covid times because I thought an in person order would be done correctly instead of possible misunderstandings over the phone. Longer exposure time for nothing. Tasty Chinese food with lots of wok flavor. I love that every dish was fragrant with the woks burning hot charring flavor. Gives it a maillard effect and definitely can taste it. I like that the dishes here are not too salty and not too oily. The wok dishes was a bit heavy on oil but it might be the Sichuan style. I traveled to China a couple months ago and as a foodie, I certainly sampled LOTS of food there. The most memorable food in China was GAN GUO "Dry pot." The concept is basically similar to Chinese Hot Pot (Chinese fondue) where you pick the meat and vegetables and cook them all in one pot, except that "Gan Guo" is "dry" with no broth/soup. When I saw the restaurant posting on Yelp, I was really intrigue and excited! We ordered the "beef" gan guo ($19.99) and added the lotus roots and wood ear mushroom. We asked for "medium spiciness." The portion was LARGE and actually, there were already some vegetables that came with the pot (when we placed our order we thought it was only beef). So, with the $19.99 price tag, you actually get sliced beef, some mushroom, bean sprouts, onions and celery. Also, they actually didn't give a lot of the extra items that we ordered, so maybe next time, it wouldn't be necessary to add extra items into the pot. If you like spicy food though, medium is not going to cut it. As a matter of fact, my gf who doesn't eat spicy at all, could handle the medium heat, so next time we will probably order the extra spicy pot to experience the heat. The flavor of the gan guo though, was super delicious, lots of flavor, just lacked of spiciness, in my opinion, hahahaha! We also ordered two non spicy dishes, fish fillet stir fry in wine sauce (and with some veggies) and the vegetables cooked with thousand years egg & chinese ham in broth. I must say, both the non spicy dishes were also really good. The fish was not fishy and had just the right flavor of saltiness. The vegetables dish were soupy but the broth was light and hearty, I would certainly order this dish again! Price wise, considering the portion, everything was very reasonable! Major complaint and why I'm giving a 4 stars vs 5 stars was that they were VERY SLOW! The food came out very slowly.. probably 30 minutes long, which is unheard of in a Chinese Restaurant. There were lots of diners, BUT they could have been more efficient and they would have a lot better turnover of customers if they would be faster in cooking the food! We went on a Saturday night and we waited about 10 minutes for a table of 4, so not too bad. Certainly, will come here again! read more

This new restaurant took the place of A La Shanghai, and boy am I glad... The previous establishment just didn't cut it (so slooooooow). General Pot is a very nice change, and a great addition to the restaurant selections in the Pacific Commons. My colleague and I are always searching for places that serve up good spicy dishes. The "hot pot" served here is not what you may be used to thinking of... It actually is individual woks that have stir fried dish of your choice with added ingredients of your choice. They cook it in the kitchen, and add all the extra fixings to the top, and place it on a gas burner on your table top to continue cooking it. This basically helps your meal continuously cook in the mild to hot (your choice) sauce and melds the flavors together for a great meal. We ordered up the fried chicken wing hot pot. My colleague wanted to ask for something between medium to hot so it wouldn't burn a hole in our stomachs (we had both felt that once after ordering an extra spicy dish at another restaurant and regretted it)... What we got was a great dish with just the right amount of heat from the hot sauce and red chili peppers and mouth numbing green peppercorns. Chicken wings were fried, but mixed well with the sauce. We added rice cakes (nice and tender and chewy), and frozen tofu (soaked up all the sauce - good). It already came with bean sprouts, lotus root, chunks of potato, and wood ear mushrooms. They also give you a big container of rice, which helps balance out the heat. All in all, a good experience. Will come back to try something else... I've never had dry hot pot before, but wow its sooo good! A lot of people around 8pm when we came, but still a couple of empty tables. The three of us shared an order of the duck meat dry hot pot and added on intestines, eggs, and tofu. OMG so yummy! Medium spicy was good enough for me, my stomach was warm after a few hours of eating it. We also ordered the chicken and corn soup, which was very good as well. $16 per person wasn't bad and we finished everything. The portion was ok that we weren't overly stuffed. I don't know what happened. We were seated right away during a normal dinner time rush. The waiter was friendly enough to help us order since it was our first time here. After the order was put in, we waited for our food for 40+ minutes. During that time, a table in front of us finished paying, the wait staff cleaned the table, a new family sat and ordered, and they got their food and ate for 10 minutes before we walked out. When we asked two people about our food, one walked right past us without acknowledging us and the other who took our ordered ran off telling us "hold on". For spicy fans? Yes. But, I will echo what others say, their portions are a little less than expected, or at least in the protein side. We ordered the beef stew dry pot, added lotus root and nothing else. But I guess if we added more stuff there would be more in the pot, but the beef was definitely hard to find.... Also, their fried rice, this one on the menu: "Fried Rice (with Eggs, Combination, Yangzhou Style".... IS NOT YANGZHOU STYLE AT ALL. It's the frozen package of peas and carrots, eggs, and then TINY pieces of SPAM. If the spam was at least a decent amount, I would brush it off, but not only is it NOT what it states "combination-WHAT?!" he tries to tell me it's a special "ham" AND be stingy with it. Honestly, will still try it again since it's not that bad, but definitely not paying $8 for a plate of soggy, no combination, spam fried rice. I will avoid their carbs, period. read more

Depending on what you are looking for this could be a place for you. The cuisine seems really geared towards a Northern style Chinese with hotpot as a main focus but this might be a little misleading since the not all the dishes are intensely flavored. The service was nice but a bit slow and the dishes I had, still has room for improvement,IMHO. E.g. Although the green onion pancake was crispy and hot, it was a bit under seasoned and the gluten was over developed or unrested, since it had a bit of chew. Not impressed with this place. Ordered General made spicy chicken wings lunch special. The entree came with steamed rice and soup. The soup was hot but not much flavor. The entree as you can see in the picture had waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy too many dry chillies. Dry chillies without the seeds. If that many chillies had all the seeds that dish would have been fiery hot. General Pot is located conveniently in Pacific Commons in Fremont. The restaurant seems to have their spicy Chinese food perfected. This place is well known for their Chinese dry pot dish. You take your pick at the meat and vegetables that you want in your dry pot and it is brought to you cooked on a portable stove. The dry pot was amazing - the meat was tender and juicy, and the spiciness added a powerful kick to the dish. Also, their Mapo Tofu was delicious. The tofu, ground meat, and sauce blended together to what may have been the best Mapo Tofu I have tasted in a while. This dish is a classic and I would highly recommend you order it. Quite a drive for me to get down there but man the food is great, been coming in and doing take-outs in the past a few weeks and tried pretty much all the pots, definitely go with the tender beef if you want a good starter one. After hearing my coworkers rave about this place for a few weeks now, I finally had a chance to try it today. And I can't believe I've been missing out all this time. Everything was deliciously spicy! We got the spicy beef with wood ear fungus, lobster balls and taro in medium spicy. It had a nice kick to it but I want to try to the spicier level next time. We also ordered the fried rice which was also good. The only thing I didn't like was the service. We got the hotpot 10 minutes before the fried rice and we asked the waitress to check on it and her response was "yeah, yeah" and walked away. Other than the service, the food is 4 stars in my book. The food is ok but we ordered 2 pots and the first pot came out after 30 min but the next pot didn't come out until 40 min after the first pot did. It was a company lunch so that was awkward esp since the general manager sat at the table with the super late pot. We spent like 2 hours there, not hat I'm complaining since I got an hour off work lol Food is pretty solid, and we got the chicken wing and intestine pot. We ordered the Cat Fish Gan Kuo. It was so salty. They took the dish back to the kitchen 3 times to do something to make it less salty. It was still not eatable. The Clear Beef Noodle soup we ordered was also very salty. Not only the soup was not drinkable, the noodle had soaked up so much salt, it was not eatable. Will never go back again. It was like eating things soaked up with ocean water. SALTY! SALTY!! SALTY!!! The price was unreasonably high too! bbq fish is really good. Usually is good for 2-3 people. Sometimes they have Tilapia, it is more delicious than cat fish. If we have 4-6 people, we will order a dry pot as well. It is also good. Thought this place closed permanently but apparently still open so we decided to try the place out again. The food is a bit too salty for our taste and the wait time for food is a bit long. There was only one waiter that handled the entire restaurant, but he was quick on his feet that handled everyone. There are plenty of food to select from but nothing that caught our eyes.
