I didn't expect it to be good but it's actually the best dry pot place I've had here in the bay area. The interior is quite cozy and nice, but I find the floor and the table a bit slippery, typical for a long-established small chinese place. They offer dry pots, roast fish as their special, along with some dishes which are not from a particular region in China, but a pretty good selection of Spicy/non-spicy food. We ordered: Spicy sliced beef & (supposedly) innards: The flavor is on point, chili oil is very fragrant. The sliced beef is tender and well marinated, however, there's supposed to be tripes in this dish, but we found none, only with some tendons inside. Dry-pot beef with pork intestine: we added lotus roots and tofu skin. They dry pot already has some veggies inside such as cauliflower & cabbage. The Med-spicy was quite spicy already so if you're not a chili eater maybe order mild. They flavor is very on point, spicy and fragrant, with hint of chili bean paste and pepper. The portion is quite big, they give you a lot of meat & veggies. We ate half and we're pretty full already, but we stuffed ourselves so we ate more but we still have 1/3 leftover. If you walk around Boscell rd near Auto Mall Parkway, try this place and enjoy Chinese food. Most of their food items are spicy. We ordered the fried rice, Tofu, and eggplant. Both the Tofu and eggplant had minced ground pork and taste delicious. It's a labor day weekend and the place is almost full so we waited for our food to arrive. Super empty when I walked in Tuesday for lunch. Tried their mini sliced lamb dry pot special with the fish gluten (fish balls) with bok choy. "Sliced Lamb" - I started digging at the dry pot so eagerly I forgot to take a photo - but I am super pleased! The flavoring is spicy and numbing as expected. I used to frequent a spot in SoCal that tasted like this that was BUSTLING, so I was surprised that it was so empty. "Fish gluten with cabbage" - could have been named better but it's not bland, super fat fish balls you're used to.... It was a good complement to the spicy and oily spicy dry pot. Tea was served with the meal and soup was given to me and BF even though we ordered just one spicy pot special. I am gonna try and come here more often. Quite possibly the best dry pot restaurant I've ever been to this far. My mom loves this place and is her go to everytime we eat out for dinner. Our usual is the beef dry pot, and we always get medium spicy(I personally prefer extra spicy but my parents don't) and we load it up with extras. There is an additional cost for add ons depending for what you get but what you get is enough to feed a family of 4 possibly for a week. The original beef dry pot I believe came with glass noodles, beef slices, and cabbage. Everytime I go I usually add on prawns, beef tendon, gluten balls, dried tofu bean curd slices, and wood ear. Everything tastes amazing! I highly highly recommend this place to anyone that likes spicy food and wants to try a dry hot pot for the first time. One of my favorite places that serves authentic Chinese dry pots. My go to choices are either the bullfrog ($MP) in which they use fresh meat, not the frozen thigh only kind, or the large pigs intestine ($25) that is cooked to a Chinese style spicy skewers type of texture which I love. The dish is large enough to be shared between 2 or 3 people and contains a lot of cabbage, bean sprouts and some wood ear mushrooms and cauliflower. My favorite add-ons are the "potato noodles" ($4) which are clear/glass noodles made with potato starch, lotus root ($4) to provide that crunch, and potato chips/slices ($3) that soak up all the excess sauce and flavors. Great with a bowl of white rice or by itself but my PRO TIP is to go next door to Shang Cafe and get the Rose Ice Jelly ($6) to enjoy with your meal! I rarely ever give a low rating. I've been here twice and I'm not coming back. We came on Mother's Day, party of four, and we were seated right away around 6pm. I was ready to order so I did the typical hand in the air signal. ONCE and only once. Then the guy yelled from afar and said "one minute!!! Even if you order now you'll still have to wait a long time!!!" Okay? It's not like I was signaling him more than once. I was totally fine with waiting. We arrived at 6pm and so it was a bit earlier than our dinner time anyways. Someone had a huge attitude but it got worse... An older lady took our order. Let me pause here. Huge language barrier. I've been here before so that's totally understandable so I pointed at the menu. We wanted the non spicy fish and I wanted to make sure there wouldn't be a lick of chili. Cus the spicy version has chili covered all over the fish. She got so loud and said "no spicy no chili right!!!!" Super belittling and rude. I just wanted to make sure. She could've just acted like a normal person. The next incident had me wanting to leave immediately. We were a party of four and we've had the same fish before. SHE wanted to upsell apparently which is fine but she kept repeating in the most impatient way to let us know that the fish only feeds two people! It was irritating to say the least. Also, I ALMOST forgot to mention that the guy was walking around maskless a few times and he would actually be at someone's table, reaching his arms in there and mixing peoples dishes. No thanks! Lastly there was absolutely no social distancing. I was able to turn my back directly at a stranger. Not to mention, they have spicy foods here so you will hear people cough up a storm. I got hot and it was hot and it was the right heat, I probably could have handled extra hot but that probably would have hurt. It was salty but it was good. This place has really tasty dry pots! I'd have to put them in my top 3 for sure. They might even be the top at this time. This dry pot place existed before all the other ones popped up but the last for me to try for some reason. It's a no frills type of place but recently just added new booths with built-in stovetops for the dry pots. For those who don't know what a dry pot is, it's a pot of stir fried meat and veggies that are further heated up more by placing the pot over flames at tableside. And you eat it while it's sizzling hot. There are levels of spiciness and we always go for the Extra Hot! This place hands down has the spiciest dry pot so far and I love sitting there drowning in sweat with my tongue numb, while I attack this thing head on! It's pretty meaty here and the pot feeds at least 2 people. The flavors and spice are pretty intense. It might be on the salty side but just wash that down with some ice cold Tsingtao Beer! Very pleasantly surprised! This is a gem. The food: very interesting, this is Hunan style pot I supposed? It is another style besides hotpot/claypot, which is also pretty yammy. This style is more flavorful than hotpot, dryer than claypot, and often spicy. We wanted spicy and the waitress warm us even "little spicy" would be challenging, she was right, mildly spicy was right for us, though I eat Sichuan/Hunan cuisine often. If you want a challenge try their Hantai spicy which "crazily spicy" probably can't describe the heartburn you will experience. The catfish pot was a lot for two of us, good for 4. And love the veggies and variety of add-ons, and they do give a lot! (Except the catfish, which more will be great) Even the beef noodle that I thought were totally not their specialty they manage a pleasant surprise, the texture of the noodle were as good as freshly made with superb skills. The extra star is for our waitress from Beijing, look at the bowl of rice in the photos. Yeah it is just a bowl of rice but only 2/3 left, I absolutely hated the restaurants to nickle and dime on rice so that you would order more for their pure profit, mostly people ended up eating less and dissatisfied. Folks this is just simple basic service decency, I instantly know this is a 5 star upon seeing that, restaurants have NEVER given enough for a bowl of rice, they expect 2 bowl of rice when you need to order rice. read more

General Pot specializes in Dry Hot Pots. It's good with large groups when you can order a bunch of ingredients all mixed in a big pot. It's pretty economical especially for students. General Pot is filled with young people. There are other things on the menu but the main dish is the Gan Guo. We had the beef Gan Guo with a bunch of other items in it. This review is not for their dry hot pots, as they're pretty much all really spicy and I don't really eat spicy food (my parents, who are China natives and are avid spicy eaters, say that the dry hot pots are pretty good though). I like the feel of this medium-sized restaurant. It's clean, casual, and the menus are adorable. The only thing I would watch out for is that it can get really loud in here, as a lot of younger people come here in groups to eat hot pot. They also have the tv turned up really loud sometimes, and there's always some Chinese drama or show on. The tea here is your normal tea bagged tea, which was a little disappointing because I was hoping they would at least have loose-leaf, but the flavor wasn't bad. The waitress was even nice enough to change the tea bag for us after our third refill because the flavor was fading. I forgot how I stumbled upon this place, but it is easily one of my favorite Chinese restaurants at the moment. A couple visits in, I realized the manager looked really familiar. It was then I realized that I had met him almost a year ago at AT&T and he had given me his name-card to promote his new restaurant...General Pot! I guess it was fate that I would fall in love with this place. Rating Breakdown: 2/2 Stars for Taste -- OK several disclaimers here. I don't eat super spicy. I've never had their dry hot pot. Wow. A lot of the other reviews focus on the dry pot, but let me tell you, their other dishes are not shabby either. If you order anything on the menu and you see that it has Chinese celery, cilantro, and is covered in red chilies, it's going to be delicious. I highly recommend the cilantro beef and the cold noodles as an appetizer. I don't know what's in that tangy red chili sauce, but it is what's CRACK-A-LACKIN'! You also can't leave without trying their sauteed pig intestines. It comes in a dry hot pot, but the smaller plate ($9.99) is totally enough for me. It has a slow spiciness that builds! The crispy outside and the chewy inside has you gasping for more...or is that the spice? If I ever were to try a dry hot pot, it would be with the intestines, hands down. The crispy tofu dish is also amazing. The fried tofu comes smothered with a minced meat sauce. It goes great with rice. In fact, everything here goes great with rice because the dishes tend toward the salty side. I love that, but others may not. 1/1 Stars for Value -- At around $10 a dish, not bad for authentic Chinese food, especially with the large portion sizes. We usually spend about $12-15 dollars per person, but we end up taking boxes home. The dry hot pot is usually $15-20, but it can feed up to 4 people easily when paired with one or two other dishes. 1/1 Stars for Customer Service -- One time, my sister and I came specifically for the intestines. When we ordered, the lady informed us that the intestines wouldn't be ready for another hour or so. The devastation must have been written all over our faces because she apologized, back away from our table, and gave us a moment to re-think our order. When we came back the next time, she saw us and immediately reassured us that there was intestine that day. Also, they get that star just for putting up with my Dad's Dad jokes. My favorite mala dry pot place is in Flushing, New York Chinatown and this comes in at a close second out of all the places we've tried (and we've tried plenty!).
