I had an excellent experience with Genteel plumbers and wanted to share the story: There was a mystery leak in my house: water was leaking through a hole in the basement ceiling through which gas pipe passed. Clearly, the gas pipe itself could not be leaking water, so the water could be coming from literally anywhere above in the entire multistory house! This is a really bad mystery to have because the total ambiguity of the source could mean a lot of chopping into walls without knowing where to look. Joan from Genteel approached the situation like a real detective or scientist, proposing various experiments (that I never would have thought of) and noticing tiny details that could be relevant, all without resorting to cutting open my walls or ceiling. To my amazement, he narrowed down the issue all through these experiments and without having to cut into anything. In particular, he noticed a tiny detail (a missing seal on the side bottom of a swinging shower door) and hypothesized the water might be slipping through that crack onto the bathroom floor outside the shower, pooling, and then trickling down through a tiny crevice in the floor. So we ran an experiment and he turned out correct! So the mystery was solved without any damage to the house at all! Then to my total surprise when he was leaving he did not charge me despite 90 minutes of detective work. He said that it was just done to prepare an estimate (to make an estimate in case work was needed) but that because no actual plumbing work ended up needed, there was nothing to charge for. In the end he saved me untold time, expense, and inconvenience, all for no charge at all! And as a result he earned one thing from me I rarely feel towards service providers: trust. read more

BEWARE of PRICE GOUGING: - Genteel charged $90 for an estimate - pretty sure they do this to get consumers to accept the cost of their actual services - The estimate was 10x higher ($1800 more) than another trustworthy plumber's work to both diagnose and fix the problem (condo owner in building knows good work) - Their "customer service" immediately called me up and tried to explain that what they were doing was legit. When I challenged it, they used name calling and intimidation. - Read other people's reviews, there's a pattern: they have a deliberate strategy of recommending the most exhaustive "specialized" work for the highest cost, usually at multiples of other plumbers This is NOT commentary on the actual plumbing work / services they provide, rather insight into an intentional business and pricing strategy. ********* Last week, Genteel did an estimate of a clogged drain (just the estimate cost $90 btw). The estimate was $2000 to $2500 to do extensive work, but that could also "be done in an hour". I told them no. We called up a trusted contractor and had it done for $195. That's literally 90% less (in this case $1800 less) and the plumbers fixed the problem!!! For additional context, the son of a condo owner in our building owns and manages other properties in San Francisco and knows what work needs to be done and good work looks like. The other plumber not only fixed the problem but also ran a camera through our pipes to do a more exhaustive diagnosis of our plumbing system. DON'T listen to any non-sense from Genteel about how they tried to rip us off. This was so egregious, it honestly felt like a scam - the company was clearly trying to get as much money out of us as possible. read more

I had a really wicked clog in my shower - like epically bad. Luckily I had the good fortune to have David M come out to help us out. He battled the clog for over 2hrs, never giving up, and he eventually prevailed. He did everything he could to keep the cost down as well vs. other guys who start the conversation w the nuclear option which also happens to cost the most. I'm grateful for his time as well as his consideration - he wore a mask and took his shoes off before coming into the home - both without me asking. Good dude. Super friendly and he wasn't annoyed that I hovered like a stage-5 clinger. I'm going to ask for him the next time I need something from Genteel. I am blown away by the speed, professionalism, and customer experience of Genteel, and specifically Marcus. I broke the tank on my toilet over yesterday. Many of the competitors quoted around $1000 or more and an estimated repair timeline of Friday at the earliest. Genteel had Marcus and his associate (whose name I regrettably forgot) here in just under 24 hours. They presented me with options and landed at a total cost of just under $700. Man oh man did I not want to have to post this review. We used genteel for YEARS and always as great work done, at reasonable prices. Earlier this year we were quoted over $2400 for a hydroflush+cam. Sam (whom I previously had a good relationship with) of course tried to convince me that this was a reasonable price. It isn't. It's wild. We ended up getting a trustworthy plumber to do it for $550. He even came back again for free to check on us. I was going to let this go and move on with my life, but they just gave another absurd quote to my father. Same general occurrence - wildly expensive compared to honest plumbers. I told him to avoid them, but he also had good luck with them in the past, so he wanted to try. That quote was 7x what he was able to get the work done for. No idea what changed this past year. Posting this review as a warning to everyone. Be safe out there, make sure your "trusted" plumber it doesn't decide to try to ring you dry for 5x+ the cost of a service. I got pics of the quote, I actually put it up on my wall, and we look at it an laugh, and wonder what went so bad with genteel. It's a shame. Avoid avoid avoid. ------ Edit: I received a phone call within 2 minutes of posting this review at 1/5. I don't appreciate that at all, it's borderline intimidation. We've done water heaters, pipe repairs, clogging, and on and on, over years. We were good, loyal customers, until that Sunday afternoon and $2400 quote. Genteel vs other guys: $2400 vs $500. $15,000 versus $2500. "We have to Have to go through a wall" (don't know how much that one was gunna cost) versus $325, and no wall tearing. For our family, 3 strikes and you're out. We've spent thousands of dollars with you over the past years. It was always more expensive, but for good work that's ok. But no plumber is so skilled their work is 7 times better than well regarding other plumbers. Had to get an accessment on two toilets. One had a leak. Genteel Plumbers quickly came to the rescue and they quickly were able to diagnose the source of the issues. Chris and Jerwin both worked on both toilets and they changed out both in an hour and a half! Couldn't be more happier for having new flushing toilets! Genteel Plumbers is very high priced and has a strange policy for estimates. They charge $89 to come out and do an estimate, so if you don't like their estimate, you pay $89. Their estimate was an outrageous $489 for one hour of onsite work with no parts. They presented me with an alternative solution for $889, and the worker told me they are required to offer that. What is that, a trick to make you think $489 is reasonable? Or easy cash from anyone rich and naive? Some good things: They make great use of technology. They used texts and emails to confirm plans we made on the phone. They advised me ahead of time of the workers' arrival. Administratively, they were great, but at what cost? The workers, David and an apprentice, were very professional and customer service focused. They told me about what they were doing and kept me informed. When they were done, they wiped up any mess. They unclogged my bathroom drain pipes and it seems to have been done well. Yet, I can't recommend them at these prices. I think a high price for one hour of plumbing would be about $300, perhaps to include driving time and office admin. But $489? Nah. Read the other reviews for similar comments. So why so many reviews with 4 and 5 stars? Maybe because they offered a $30 rebate for a yelp review! read more

I have called these guys a few times now because my apartment has weird pipes that get clogged a lot. They are always very friendly, polite, and efficient. They are also good about walking you through various options that could solve the problem you have, and the different prices associated with it. After getting input about my pipe leak from their technician on site, I was offered a *ridiculous* quote of more than $3000 and was told how *serious* and *grave* my problem is. Genteel Plumbers has come out to assist on a few jobs and have been courteous and efficient. From the operator Max who is super upbeat and polite, to Chris the plumber who quotes very fair rates and follows-through with quality work, to Graham the owner/manager who collects the moolah, my experience has been very professional. Starting from last May 2020, Chris came out to provide a quote and matched another price, but ultimately I selected him because of his knowledge and polite demeanor. Unfortunately, a different plumber (DM me for his name) was sent out for the second part of the job (drain replacement and garbage disposal installation) and then tried to charge me 3x the cost. Finally, I was able to negotiate to a lower but still high price (compared to the quotes I'd received). Even then, Chris had saved the day by providing key parts that the second plumber said weren't possible/available. Fast forward 10 months to today - my tenant apparently had been dumping mop water with debris into the kitchen sink. Chris came out to dismantle the pipes, clear the drain of gunk and grease and charged me a fair price for the trouble. While he was there, he looked at an old dishwasher, quickly made sure the shower and bathroom sink were in working order and assured me that the "gas smell" was actually exhaust from the water heater and nothing to be concerned about after checking with his diagnostic tools. After the visit today, Graham called to check in that I was completely happy and was pleased I'd given them a chance to make it right (after I described the less stellar experience with the second plumber). We discovered a water mark on our kitchen ceiling. We had a contractor friend dig around to investigate. After cutting a few holes in the drywall - the culprit turned out to be a screw in our supply line (from when the house was remodeled before we bought it). The slow leak all of a sudden turned into a fast leak when the screw rusted out. We quickly turned off the water. So here we are on a sunny Saturday in SF, and we have no water. Ugh. My husband called 8 plumbers. One responded and said he could come on Monday. Not good. Then Genteel Plumbers called back. Yay!! David and Jerwyn came over, assessed the situation, went to the supply store to get the correct pipe, and then saved the day. They soldered the pipe, tested it out, soldered some more, and tested it out until it was 100% fixed. It was in a tight spot too - not a problem for these two. They were awesome!! On a Sunday night at the end of March 2021, a pipe had broken in my kitchen and I was unable to reach it and the water was pouring out. This would cause major damage if left overnight and I was besides myself. So I was calling around frantically when the dispatcher at Genteel picked up and was able to dispatch a guy who was actually on the way back to the station for the night. About 30 min later the tech Joan Leyva showed up and was able to get the pipe repaired and since I had turned the water of on my entire condo building he installed an "angel stop" below the sink so in the future if I had any leaks I could turn the water off in my condo and not anger my entire building on a Sunday night (which I did). The fee was not cheap, maybe about K1 all together but my alternative was soaked floors, damaged carpets and perhaps leaks through the subfloor hitting the floor below. I'm giving this review a 5 star due to them responding on a Sunday night and due to the tech Joan Leyva who was most courteous and he did everything to get things done for me past 7pm on a Sunday night with a smile. He also showed me the prices on his drop down menu so I knew they were set by the company. read more

Very impressed w/the service call. Tech Chris & his assistant arrived promptly on time in my central Richmond property. We had to shut off the building hot water the night before so it was a welcoming sight when they arrived. I was impressed w/their teamwork & how polite Chris explained my options before making the most reasonable decision. Breaking the stereotype of how sometimes contractors can get pushy & tacky. Not always based on price but in the long run. We decided on one of the replacing the tub & shower kit & go from there. Without going into details everything went back to normal after installing the kit. The whole job was completed w/in the hour. Payment & all work done w/in distanced but definitely earn me as a fan. I look forward to updating this to a 5/5 when I try them again. 2/5 stars because I don't like negotiating prices after the fact. This was the second time I called the company. I had a great first experience with them almost three years ago now. When I called they said there would be a $85 deposit which is perfectly reasonable and I agreed to it. The minute they walked into the door they said it's going to be $389 minimum before they fully stepped inside. Then when we said this was double the price of the last visit they said oh we have a $55 online coupon. Then at the end they went down to a sub $300 price at the end of it after it was clearly an easy job and the work was done. How does this strategy make sense unless you want to alienate and piss off your customer? Since when is $389 a starting price for plumbing services??? read more
