Recently dined at George's Greek Café on a night out with my husband. Although we live in the area it had been a while Since we enjoyed a meal here. We were warmly greeted and allowed to sit at the table of our choice. Our waiter approached us shortly there after got our drink order as well as our appetizer and meal selections. I think that my favorite part of the whole meal was the fried cheese that is flambéed table side. We recalled this appetizer from the last time we were here and it did not disappoint! For dinner my husband ordered the lamb chops which is the dish that they are known for. Although I am not a fan he raves about them and says that there are the best he's ever had. I ordered the pastitsio dish and it was SUPERB! For dessert we had the baklava which like the rest of our meal was first class. At the end of our meal both my husband and I asked ourselves why it is that we don't come here at least once a week! OPA! this place is known for their lambs but unfortunately I don't eat lamb so I opt for the stuffed salmon which was also recommended. My friends ordered them stuffed steak and build ur own filet mignon and we also ordered the flaming cheese which was also highly recommended. My friend enjoyed his steak and my bf liked his filet mignon. I had a taste of it and it was soft and tender. Flavorful and I wish I ordered that instead! My stuffed salmon was just OK. Nothing really spectacular and I didn't think the stuffing was all that great. Flaming cheese was ok to me as well. I love cheese but I could've went without it. Service was great! The waitress was really friendly and nice and even gave us 2 complimentary baklava's! They were delicious and we were told it was made by them. Open since 1999, this place is an institution in Belmont Shores, right on Second Street. The food is the same as I remember, pretty solid. I had the Greek salad with grilled shrimp. The shrimp were on the small side, but they had a nice flavor. The salad was good but overly dressed. My son had the souvlaki sandwich; which he said was very tasty, but it fell apart as soon as he unwrapped it, which annoyed him. He ordered a side of French fries in garlic and feta, which were okay. (The fries themselves were not that great.). My daughter had the gyro plate and she seemed to enjoy that pretty well. All in all, a solid meal, but nothing outstanding. We went today for dinner, was ready to walk away because even they had many empty tables they told us that those tables were reserved it and have had to wait 15/20 minutes. Luckily the manager came out and asked the waitress to let us seat at that moment, Simon was our waitress and he totally changed the bad first impression, he was the best, great personality, polite, helpful, kind, he is the best person in that restaurant. Came to George's for the first time yesterday. Ordered the lamb chops with salad and veggies. Everything was delicious! The lamb wasn't gamey and the veggies were so darn good. The ambience is nice also. They involve the customers when certain things are ordered by having everyone yell out "opa!" when they flame the cheese. The service was attentive (maybe a little too attentive) and the prices are reasonable. My friend got the falafel sandwich, which she liked, and some fries that were SO GOOD! We enjoyed lunch here on a Sunday afternoon. We had made a reservation, but surprisingly did not need one. We had very attentive service by our waiter. Our water was filled often, we were offered more pita bread for our drips, and he even changed the game on the TV to the Seahawks game for us! I had the chicken plate. I dined at this restaurant for the first time after a bike ride in Belmont Shore. The friend that I went with lives in Long Beach and she has eaten there several times. We both ordered the Greek salad and I picked the gyros for my protein and my friend had the flat iron steak. Kevin, our server, was kind enough to give me a sample of both types of gyros-- their traditional lamb and beef gyros and also chicken gyros which I had never had before. BOTH were excellent! Georges Greek café is one of my favorite spots to dine in Long Beach. I was going to update my review only to discover it has never been written and is overdue. Everyone who knows me, knows I prefer my food minimally processed. I am mindful of my diet in order to stay healthy and prevent disease. Honestly, I just don't want to develop diabetes like dad and all three of his brothers. And as an RN, I know the Mediterranean diet is my healthiest option. Georges is located towards the East end of Belmont Shore on 2nd Street. There's outside seating under a canopy. The husband and I usually go Saturday or Sunday evenings and we almost always sit outside. Today, arrived at noon on a Thursday to meet my girlfriend and was sat immediately. The interior is open and bright with natural light. The place is about 1/3 full. The staff are engaging and fun. Service was prompt and indulging. Indulging us with tastes of food, information, positive attention and humor. I told my friends how the first time I visited, I wasn't feeling well and just had the tomato soup. So the owner brought tastes for us. The tomato bisque is a dream is you like homemade soup. It has a kick to it that sets it apart. I had my preferences including the falafel's, which are light and crispy. Their calamari is also light crispy served with two sauces made on grounds. Spectacular combination of flavors and textures. Check in for a free dip with pita bread! It's so worth it! The wait staff is awesome! They were really friendly and always checked up on us. We ordered the gyro wrap with feta fries and a plate of racks of lamb which came with rice, veggies (broccoli and carrots), a dip of choice, and pita bread. I forgot the names of the dips but we tried two different ones and they were super delicious, you can't really go wrong! Seamless pick up and the outdoor dining was packed, which was good to see! One of my most favorite places to come and eat, especially lamb and lamb chops (medium to medium-rare). In my opinion, now one does better lamb chops than this place here in SoCal. Last night, I had the opportunity to dine at George's. I read reviews and was even more compelled to make a visit because one of my girlfriends, Jacquelin O. apparently wrote a great review for this place. It was about 6:30pm and we were just stopping by to grab some take out, although now I wish we had dined in. What a gorgeous establishment. Soft, dim lights, tasteful decor, and a comfortable, but classy ambiance. There was a friendly server at the bar who took our order. I got the chicken gyro with rice and a side order of falafel. He got the beef gyro, extra meat with fries. The little one wanted chicken nuggets so we would later stop at McD's to fulfill her craving. While we waited, little one sat up on a barstool and was finishing her math homework while we exchanged funnies with the server. Hungrily jumped into the car and took a bite out of the falafel. OMG it was so good. It had a crisp outside and a hearty tenderness inside. Went so well with the tahtziki sauce. I then proceeded to work on my gyro. The thing was massive! So much shaved chicken, refreshing cucumbers, plump tomatoes and more of that yummy sauce. Unfortunately I forgot to have them remove the onions, but shit I ate the entire thing anyway. Loved their rice, so delicately flavored as well.( See photos) I did not have the chance to try the beef gyro, but with the extra meat, it was so eye-poppingly large and girthy. (haha). The fries were perfectly seasoned, and I wish there were more of them in there. Even HE said, he didn't need the extra meat order, which has never happened before. Chicken gyro/rice + falafel appetizer + beef gyro/fries + extra meat = $27 and some change. Well worth it. What an addicting first time experience at George's. Belmont Shore. Let's just say, I will be going back tomorrow. That's how great it was. My recommendation, which was actually recommended by 3 others, are the Lamb chops! Medium! I had the rice and veggies on the sides. Veggies were really fresh btw! The pita bread one my second favorite. Fluffy. Seasoned with I don't know what but I enjoyed it so much I wish I had more! I wonder if I can order a side of them? Hmmmm Also the customer service is so amazing! The manager LuLu is an angel! She will make sure you have a friendly smile to talk to and a great experience! George's edge over the other 3 Mediterranean restaurants on Second would be it's probably the least expensive of the four, and it's the most traditional and family-friendly, with a nice but not too-nice, open-air, two-story indoor patio feeling with a mural. Get the awesome falafel balls on hummus appetizer. Sorry, it's hard to review George's without comparing it to Open Sesame (overrated but undeniably the locals' favorite), Boubouffe (more upscale, adult), and Magic Lamp (cozier, more Aladdinish). My husband and I drove down from SFV to get out of the heat. We hadn't been down to Long Beach since before pandemic. We decided to have lunch at our favorite Greek Restaurant. I had the vegetarian platter. My husband had the pastitso. The food came out quickly and was hot and delicious. Our server - who's name escapes me was so sweet. The only reason we ate here the other day is our favorite place, Natraj, was closed (Monday) and we didn't know until we got there. Yelp said it was open =( . I have to fix that. We had to linger around the area waiting for another appointment so we ended up here. Prices have gone up over the past few years, so a Gyro salad is now $15. It really shouldn't be more than $12 max for what you get and that's being generous. It tasted good but the gyro meat was a bit dry. Belmont Shore is generally pricey all around, which is why Natraj lunch buffet is the best deal in town. Next time... Aside from that, the staff was pushy about the wine which made it far less enjoyable. Mondays they have a special of half off wine all day. Within the first 5 minutes (we were first customers of the day) the waiter had informed us and we politely declined. Moments later a woman came over to make sure we knew about the wine, and we politely declined again. She continued on to let us know they also did tasters and we politely declined and thanked her, again. She still went on to tell us (and other tables later) about her recent trip to Baja for wine tasting and joked how much she drank. I get it, you are trying to be friendly and increase sales but you are really just being pushy. We've already said no several times. I don't need a bottle of wine at 11am on a Monday. Please leave us alone. When we lived in Long Beach we used to frequent the George's on Pine (much prefer that location) but after this experience along with the prices, we will make sure to have a plan if we find ourselves down there on a day Natraj isn't open.
