Not sure if Ginger & Scallion is still in its soft opening phase, but I highly recommend it to satisfy your Hainanese chicken & rice craving! Start off with some apps - fried chicken skin, cucumber salad, and shishito peppers are the ones they had when I was there. I really enjoyed the fried chicken skins, and would like to see it as a main entree next time (maybe with rice - hint hint). With any Hainanese chicken & rice dish, you'll need the classic sauces and Ginger & Scallion does not disappoint. Try all 4 of their sauces. One of them I haven't seen before, but is fish sauce-based and I suspect has a hint of tamarind and/or palm sugar. For mains, we tried the classic, curry, BBQ, and drunken chicken. They all have their own character, and certain ones pair well with the sauces while others are better by themselves. Regardless, the chicken are all cooked and seasoned well. I'm a big fan of the drunken chicken! Rice needs a mention - it was fragrant and prepared with aromatics so you know it is legit! Also appreciated the balancing broth that came with a subtle white pepper flavor. Finally, we finished off with the matcha cheesecake. Overall a decent place- They specialize in Asian style chicken and duck. We tried the Drunken Chicken and Braised Duck. Both were flavorful and tender but a pretty small portion for $20+ dishes. The rice was just okay and the broth lacked flavor. I did enjoy all the sauces that come with it on the side: sweet soy sauce, thai chili, ginger and scallion sauce. Pros: I love being able to scan the QR code to order and pay from my phone. This is awesome, and it really elevates the experience. Meats were really good, cooked well, and not a bad value. Noodles were a good texture. Cons: Bland khao soi (which was the only thing on the menu at lunchtime). Small seating area that feels a bit squished. Overall, I had an okay time at this restaurant. Ginger & Scallion is an amazing place for chicken rice, brought to you by the team behind Secret Congee! This is some of the best chicken rice I've ever had. The chicken is tender and juicy, pairs great with any of their four sauces. My favorite chicken variations are probably the drunken chicken and Singaporean which are both served cold. I also appreciate the ability to pick between dark meat (the better meat) and white meat. Each chicken dish is served with an incredibly flavorful rice and a soothing broth. Their Thai tea tres leches was also pretty good, although not the strongest tea flavor. The place itself is relatively small. We came at around 11 am on a Sunday and it wasn't too busy. I'd have to give it to the restaurant, they have very good Hainanese chicken rice. It's pricey at $21 for some medium portion, but where can you even find a good deal these days. I've been a fan of Hainanese chicken rice since I discovered it in a Thai restaurant in Kobe, Japan of all places. I've been on a hunt for a good place in the US for years. No restaurants in NYC couldn't surpass what I had in Kobe but Ginger & Scallion may be the first one to do so. I ordered takeout and it came with four types of sauce - I wasn't a fan of the sweet brown sauce, but I liked all three others - I thought the red one would be some regular sweet chili sauce, but it had a good kick to it and I enjoyed how spicy it was. The other two sauce was just plain amazing. Restaurant opened at 4 pm and we went around 4:20 pm at first. For the Hainanese chicken rice, you can pick either dark meat or breast. At that time, they didn't have dark meat option yet but it became available around 5 pm. My friend and I was all about dark meat so I had to come back later for that. Staff is friendly and the service was quick. I could actually imagine myself craving the chicken rice from here again. I'm happy that I got a chance to visit! read more

Restaurant recently switched gears to exclusively serving Khao Soi--a heads up since there aren't obvious signs outside. Stopped by on a Saturday night and grabbed the Braised Beef and Lamb Kao Soi. Loved the beef version! The broth was flavorful and the beef was perfectly tender. Nothing felt too salty or forced. Lamb was tasty, just a touch on the chewy side. Portions felt just right, topped generously with crispy noodles, pickled greens, onion, and cilantro. The Thai iced tea was also not overly sweet. They used to be a chicken rice restaurant but recently changed their menu concept to serve Khao soi. Khao Soi is a rich and flavorful Thai curry noodle dish. We tried the Beef Tenderloin, Duck, and Lamb Khao Soi. All were fantastic, but the lamb stole the show for me! I love that they use the sous vide method for cooking the meat and then sear to perfection. Each dish is topped with pickled mustard greens, scallions, cilantro, crispy noodles, and a mix of fresh and fried shallots. They also offer a great selection of beer and wine, but my go-to is their Thai Iced Tea, hands down one of the best in Seattle. Came here on Friday at 7 PM and sat at the bar with no wait! It's a small, cozy restaurant that had a welcoming vibe with an open kitchen. Because we sat at the bar, we could observe the kitchen pretty closely - we were surprised by how attentive and careful the workers at the kitchen were! We saw this worker meticulously inspecting and washing all the herbs for the entire time we were there The service was great - our server was kind and gave some good recommendations and explained the house made sauces. We ordered classic chicken with dark meat and bbq grilled chicken breast and cucumber salad. Both of the chicken dishes were very good! I was super impressed by how tender and moist chicken breast was for the bbq chicken. I also really liked the spiced seasoning on the bbq chicken. The rice was also really flavorful! All of their house sauces were delicious - I especially liked the ginger and scallion one (that is the name of this place haha). I would give this place a 5 stars if it weren't for the price. For over $20 per dish, the portion isn't too big, especially the chicken. I wish they gave a bit more chicken. Also the cucumber salad is just cucumber with vinegar and sesame oil and it's $8. Their offerings were limited, as they are completing training on their signature dishes, but we didn't let that deter our visit. We ordered the Hainanese chicken as well as the Curried chicken, both served with rice. The chicken was tender for both dishes and paired well with the various sauces. The rice has enough flavor to stand on its own. We left wanting more, which I think is a good sign! We were hoping to try Mary's Chips, but they were out during this visit. Let's get one thing straight: Ginger & Scallion knows it's flavors. But let's get another point straight through: damn, this place be pricey! So brace yourself...and your wallets. My wife and I came here after seeing this on social media, and we love a good Hainan Chicken dish. We kept our expectations low, especially knowing the championing Hainan chicken and rice dish from our friendly neighbors to the south (looking at you Portland), but we were excited nonetheless. We ordered: 2 orders of the Classic 1 Mary's Chips Ok, so the Mary's chips. Pretty disappointing, not going to lie. I need to remember that social media can be fake and some "food influencers" *gag* just put on a facade, but these were not very good. $8 for basically 5-6 pieces of crispy chicken skin? Definitely not worth it, and despite having a nice crisp, it tasted so...empty. Highway robbery, price-wise, for what you get - I won't recommend this. For the entrees: the rice was really good, with a hint of garlic and ginger intertwined with every bite. The soup was really refreshing, and the white pepper taste was very bountiful and good. Definitely great on a cold Seattle day. The chicken wasn't bad, and it was quite tender and juicy. My only qualm? The price: $21 for quite a small plate of food. Let's just say I finished my wife's rice and my entire dish, and I was still left quite hungry. Service was good, and this place has a lot of potential. Cute and small storefront in phinney ridge area serving hainan chicken rice. Opted for the classic so we could get a baseline of what the dish tasted like and it did not disappoint. You have a choice between breast and dark meat (and was told a combo mix of the 2 would be coming to the menu soon). Meat was super tender and it came with yummy, non oily, chicken broth cooked rice. The side of broth that it came with was a little white pepper heavy. Of the 4 sauces, all the homemade ones were the best. Highly recommend dousing your entire place with the ginger and scallion sauce. The sweet dark soy was our least favorite. Mary's chips were also a good starter for the table. We got called that our table was ready after waiting at a local bar for 45 minutes. When we sat down, our table had no QR code which they say you can order through or call a staff member. I stopped a staff member letting them know we had no QR code and would like to order and they said someone would be on the way. We waited maybe 15 minutes, no one came, so my boyfriend got up to tell a different staff member that we had no QR code and would like to order. They again said "it's on the way". We sat there again for another 15ish minutes, no one came, so we left. We understand this is a new spot and it was quite busy, but least they could do is ensure their tables all have QR codes to order through so if they are unable to help customers personally, people can still order. read more

I've had other chicken and rice dishes before and the rice is not so flavorful. :( They also provide four different sauces with the meal, 3 of which are homemade - impressive! My favorite sauces were the tan/brown one and the sweet/spicy one. They said the tan/brown was the "hottest", but for me, it was quite mild. This is a very solid Hainanese chicken rice spot. I got the classic dark meat plate and they give a good amount rice. Chicken was tender. Rice had good chicken and onion flavor. The broth on the side was very peppery - a little unexpected but quite nice. As far as sauces, the ginger scallion sauce was my favorite. They also had a chili sauce, sweet soya sauce, and one other sauce although I forget what it was. We also had the "chips" which are fried chicken skins. Very crispy, but I think they can only fry one batch at a time so while our table ordered 2, they came out 5-10 minutes apart. It comes with a sweet chili sauce. Service was very friendly. I do wish they came by to refill water a little more frequently. They were also out of a few drinks and the tiramisu which was a little disappointing. The biggest con with this place is the cost. $24 for a plate of chicken rice was quite surprising, even for Seattle. All in all, this is a good chicken rice spot. Or maybe the price was just way too high. For $25 pre-tax, I could buy 5 whole chickens at Costco (or even Whole Foods!), whereas here, I only got maybe 1/4 of a chicken. Adorable restaurants minutes from the Ballard breweries makes it the perfect dinner spot! We stopped in close to closing time, but they graciously accommodated us and did not rush us in any way. They have a variety of khao soi on the menu. We tried the lamb, duck and the vegan khao soi and all of them were very flavorful and wonderful. The lamb was hands down our favorite. There was only one other table seated when we arrived and other parties who came after us were also surprised and disappointed to learn of the limited menu (one table even got up and left without ordering). Hainan chicken is one of my go-to dishes when I'm craving comfort food, so I'm so happy this new place opened up in Phinney Ridge. The cucumber salad is the perfect light appetizer while you wait for your main dishes. Got here around 6:30 pm on a Monday and it was about half filled out. It's a very nice, well decorated restaurant. The service was very nice and friendly. The menu consists of mainly chicken rice dishes and a few other dishes as well. We decided to get one chicken and rice dish to try and then to try one of their other dishes as well, ended up getting the braised duck. I think for a place that specializes in chicken and rice with half of the dishes on the menu being about that, I expected a lot more from this spot. I honestly was disappointed in the chicken, and thought it should've been softer. I thought it was just mid at best. I did think the duck was pretty good though and it's one of the best duck I've had in Seattle but it's pretty pricy for the amount you get. Both dishes came out with rice and soups, I thought the rice was pretty good and flavorful and had that chicken flavoring. But the soup was just very weak and just had some white pepper or something thrown in it felt. We tried all of the sauces they had and we liked the ginger scallion sauce and the Singapore chili sauce, we did not like the sweet soy sauce that was wayyy too sweet or the other sauce. We both ordered different versions of their Khao Soi - the braised beef and the oxtail. Both bowls were divine. The curry broth was rich and silky with just the right amount of heat and depth; it wrapped around the noodles like a warm hug. The beef was tender and flavorful, falling apart easily, and the crispy noodles on top added the perfect crunch to each bite. A beautiful balance of textures, spice, and soul. We just came back now that they serve khao soi instead and I'm glad we did. I got the goat and my partner got the lamb, both were delicious, perfect portion size and felt worth the money. Of the two, goat felt like the clear winner. I wish they'd spruce up the decor a tiny bit, offer an appetizer so we'd have a reason to hang longer and order another drink, and work on the acoustics since it's so loud in there. That being said, I'll absolutely go back regularly to try their other flavors. Maybe next time I'll get the oxtail. read more
