Came here for an early dinner (showed up just a bit after they opened) on a rainy saturday and were able to immediately get seated at the bar as a party of 3. There's street parking for free outside which is nice too. The menu is full of khao soi with a bunch of different meats although I was a little confused over the fact that chicken wasn't an option since that's usually the standard. I would have gotten it too if they had it. As is I went for the goat khao soi. It took a solid amount of waiting (maybe 30 min) for our food to arrive, but since we were sitting at the bar we had the entertainment of watching everything happening in the kitchen. When the food got to us we were starving which was perfect because we were presented with a beautiful looking bowl of food. The broth was UBER creamy, fragrant, and the noodles were great and al dente too. I was really happy with my choice of goat. The bones weren't really a hassle and it was super tender and not really gamey. Very comforting bowl. The wonton wrapper crunchies do eventually end up soggy at the end though (duh) so just clean that up early. read more

I don't get the hype behind this place. Maybe it's popular online, but based on the actual food, this was a pretty average Khao Soi. The restaurant itself is small, and we waited about 30 minutes to get seated. Not unreasonable, but it didn't really feel worth it afterward. The broth was the biggest letdown. It wasn't bad, but it lacked depth--no real aroma, no noticeable sweetness, just a very standard, forgettable broth. For a dish that depends heavily on the broth, it was a disappointment. The noodles were also undercooked. I know they emphasize their local Washington pasta from a pasta restaurant, but it didn't translate into anything special. Texture was off, and flavor-wise they just tasted like basic noodles. Portion size was on the smaller side, especially the protein. They also highlight their chili oil, but that didn't impress either. The jar on the table was mostly dried chili peppers with barely any oil left--definitely needed a refill. On top of that, the tables were old and off-kilter, which made them wobble while eating. I've honestly had better Khao Soi at places that don't even specialize in it. I'd like to proclaim that I'm somewhat an expert in eating hainamese chicken and chicken rice. I've grown up eating it, and have eaten it around the world. There's a threshold of flavor that you need to hit with the rice, as well as moistness and tenderness of the chicken without compromising flavor. I was a bit doubtful going into ginger & scallion. Usually they would do one well, and not the other, or they would just miss both by a smidge. Luckily this was not their case with the Singaporean Style Hainamese chicken. Great flavor in chicken, which was elevated even more with their sauce. The chicken rice stands well on its own, so you know that it's done right. we also tried the duck. It was good, but not as amazing as their Singaporean hainamese chicken. I'm glad I tried both, but will only stick with the chicken next time. Possibly try their Bah Ku teh. This south East Asian gravitates to flavor, and G&S has delivered it well. Service was quick, attentive, and friendly. I ate Hainanese chicken all the time growing up, so I was excited to see a restaurant that just focuses on this dish. The restaurant is no frills and laid back. The waitress seemed new though--gave off a nervous energy. The food though, looks like they just give you the best cut of the chicken. Growing up when I eat this dish, we got a lot of the chicken, but there's a ton of bones. At this place, in some ways, I appreciate that there were no bones and it was easy to eat, but also I felt like there was less meat. I felt the same about the duck dish. The restaurant is a very humble little restaurant around Phinney Ridge. Went here over the weekend to try out their Hainan chicken for the first time before they change up their menu. I feel like this is what put them on the map and became what they are known for. Went for the Singaporean style Hainan chicken which was fantastic and was complimented with their seasoned broken rice. I enjoyed it a lot. Also was able to try out their braised duck and rice which was just as good. Both were very solid entrees. Very unfortunate to see the Hainan chicken go, but looking forward to the new menu. I've eaten here at least three times and have really enjoyed the food. I always order the Classic Chicken & Rice, but my friends have also enjoyed the Drunken Chicken. But honestly, I think we all come for the signature sauces, which most of them are made in house except for Sweet Soy (?). Whenever we eat, the entire sauce jars are emptied because they're that good, especially the iconic ginger scallion, which the restaurant is named after. Each chicken rice set comes with a light broth and chicken rice with the option of white or dark meat. The Thai Iced Tea is also a nice addition to your meal. But I would not order the Cucumber Salad again - it was mid & unnecessary when you have cucumbers included in your chicken rice set. My husband ordered their beef tenderloin khao soi, the beef was cooked to medium rare and had a lot of flavor. My favorite component was the noodles. We enjoyed them so much, that we ordered a second serving of noodles each. Khao soi can be spicy, but theirs wasn't and had a lot of great umami flavor. Combined with their signature ginger scallion sauce, the rice could be a meal on its own. The richness of the rice and the warm broth makes it a really nice meal for a cold day. I was so excited to try this place out when it popped up on my feed because my cousin and I love hainanese chicken as well as supporting fellow Asian American businesses, but truthfully we did not enjoy our meal. The representation was not seen when we went inside. There isn't a parking lot nearby, and the streets nearby were full so we had to drive up a bit into a neighborhood. Finding the restaurant was confusing at first because there's not sign on the storefront. It's a very small restaurant, so it was already pretty full and has super bright light. The noise level is average, not too loud but you can definitely hear those around you since you're so close together. Ordering is pretty simple because the host was our server and the menu is concise. Our food was dropped off quick, but the rest of the service was mediocre. cucumber salad: was not pickled as expected and lacked the rice vinegar flavor as a whole. I could see the sesame oil, but barely tasted it as it just tasted like raw cucumbers were cut and fresh placed atop. It was crunchy, but didn't taste properly prepped. classic chicken & rice: chicken resembled proper hainanese chicken and was juicy, but again is hard to mess up. The rice however was insanely salty and the soup if we can even call it that was plain. It actually tasted like water and was pale with a singular silver of green onion as garnish. five-spiced braised tofu: the fact that it was was served cold threw me so off and the tofu texture was also unexpected for me. It had an exterior that was dry and spongy, but the inside was still semi-firm. the sauce itself just tasted like star anise and soy sauce then was filled with a significant amount of gogi berries. thankfully the fluffy rice was apart of the meal and was hot though that was the only saving grace. Neither my cousin nor I liked our dish at all. We didn't finish the entrees and didn't want the left overs. There are complimentary sauce jars that come to the table and those made my meal edible. I liked the ginger and spice seasonings provided to elevate the profile of the entrees. Overall though I felt the prices were expensive for not only the portion, but simply because I didn't feel it tasted good enough. Came to the soft opening and we had the duck & drunken chicken dishes and both were really solid choices. I would highly recommend the duck dish as it's heavy with five spice char flavor while being moist and succulent! The drunken chicken was a nice cold poached peppery dish which was good to contrast the duck dish. We wish both dishes came with the same flavored chicken rice but the duck comes with just plain rice. All the restaurant made sauces to dip/ spoon over the proteins were so good. My only gripe with the meal was that the soup was not good at all-- lacked chicken flavor and just tasted like peppery water. Service is kind of scrambled and figuring things out but overall nice people. We also shared the wings (not pictured) which was alright it's a drum and a wing in one but needs more salt and kind of small. This was my first time trying khao soi and i was pleasantly surprised. I got the braised beef chuck roll and egg noodles in their signature Khao Soi curry broth. It comes with chopped pickled mustard greens, scallion and cilantro, fresh and fried shallot then topped with crispy egg noodles. They also give you a side of limes. The beef was so tender. I thought that the ratio of noodles to broth was perfect. I had some leftover broth. There was a lot of flavor in the broth itself and all the toppings went well together. Everything was tender and light -- so easy to digest. The only thing is that i felt like the egg noodles didn't absorb the broth as much as i was expecting. The first few bites just felt like egg noodles with a side of curry (if that makes sense...) but overall, I really enjoyed this meal. Although, I do wish there was an option to make it spicy. In terms of service, we were greeted when we walked in, chose our table and ordered by scanning a QR code. We got our lime wedges when we sat down as well. Once we ordered, it didn't take too long for our food to come out. Staff was attentive with our waters. Overall, it was a nice and cozy space. We decided to visit Ginger & Scallion for a weekend lunch and dropped in just a couple of minutes after opening. I always appreciate seeing a place that only serves a single dish - this means they can really try to perfect it and serve the best possible version. The waiter asked us, and everyone coming in after us, if we were here for Khao Soi. Of course we were! But we did see a couple of people leave after they realized Ginger & Scallion no longer served Hainanese chicken rice. Ordering is done at each table via QR code. Since we were the first to order that day, we got our food pretty quickly. Within 10 minutes or so, we were digging in. Braised Beef Khao Soi ($15) - We sat at the bar so we could peer into the kitchen to see the magic happening. The noodles are boiled and portioned out with a scale to ensure the perfect ratio. They are placed in a bowl which is warmed in a giant rice cooker (from their chicken rice days?). The curry soup base is ladled in and then scoops of coconut milk, chili oil, and other seasonings are added. I believe the base is made simply with Thai yellow curry base with additional aromatics and umami elements added in to boost the flavor. Whatever the case, the liquids all mix up into a soup that's very well balanced between spicy, sweet, salty, and savory. The entire dish is served at a good eating temperature, instead of piping hot as with a lot of other noodle soup restaurants. The toppings include five or six pieces of beef - braised until perfectly tender. There are some fatty and tendinous parts that turn almost jelly-like after being braised for so long, yet the meat is not dried out or tough at all. Delicious. There's a good portion of egg noodles added in, still with a bit of a bite. Plenty of suancai, cilantro, fried shallots, and red onions boost the herbaceous qualities of the dish and also add texture. They finally add crunchy fried noodles on top, broken up into manageable pieces. The only negative - that portion size is kind of small. I felt full enough coming out, but could have eaten a bit more. (5/5) Lamb Leg Khao Soi ($19) - I think the only difference is the addition of braised lamb leg instead of beef. Similar to the beef, the lamb is very tender, but it's not fatty at all so there's not too much of the gaminess. Since the pieces are lean, dunking it into the broth after each nibble allows the meat to moisten a bit, since it's a little drier compared to the beef. After eating everything else, the broth left at the bottom of the dish tastes a bit spicier than the braised beef for some reason, and it has a bit of the lamb taste infused in. (5/5) While we didn't order them, we saw the chef preparing the beef tenderloin and the duck breast. They are stored in a sous vide container, then taken out, torched, and sliced to order. and taken out to be torched on a double layer of metal trays. The menu posted outside lists a lamb belly khao soi, which we were interested in order, but they don't have this dish yet. The waiter said they're still testing out the concept. Maybe next time? He frowned, rolled his eyes and responded that we had to use the QR code! Since it was our first visit to this location, we looked forward to some suggestions about the menu - he offered none. We ordered quickly. He stared at us silently then walked away! It was the craziest, weirdest service either of us had ever experienced. The restaurant was less than 1/2 full and didn't have a busy vibe to it at all. He returned later to give us 2 complimentary Thai teas "so that we wouldn't contact the owner". The food we had was delicious. The service was abysmal. The chef came from behind the counter to deliver take-out dishes to us since the waiter was MIA. We have been many times to Secret Congee and have had excellent service and food, this was such a shock! This server was mean-spirited for no reason. On a whim I decided to try out Ginger and Scallion having heard good things about it. I learned when going in that they'd completely dropped the chicken and rice concept. I had planned on getting khao soi based on looking at yelp reviews so my plans didn't really change. I haven't had enough khao soi to determine what makes a great one. I ended up getting the seared duck khao soi because historically, I like duck. I will say that for a noodle soup, it's not particularly soupy. I enjoyed the soup but given the quantity, it ended up being something I was eating noodles and then taking sips of. The amount of soup given is something that seems still in the works. As I was leaving, someone at another table asked for more soup. I did glance at her bowl and it had even less than I had gotten. Overall I felt the seared duck version wasn't particularly worth the upcharge. The duck doesn't particularly stand out and the skin was difficult to bite through. Given the name, I expected the duck skin to be crispy so it was a bit of a surprise to me that it wasn't. Overall, I did enjoy it but that is my mild irk. I did find it interesting that part way through the meal the host mentioned desserts. I was interested in the thai tea flan but I had ordered via the QR code on the table and it wasn't on that menu. I didn't understand how that would work but was on a bit of a time crunch so ended up not trying it. Also I don't know why they would want to deal with a second credit card fee. The pivot to khao soi seems to be a bit sudden to anyone who doesn't follow them on socials. It's the first thing mentioned when I entered and while there, at least one group came in expecting chicken and rice. Hopefully the kinks will get ironed out soon. read more

I tried a variety of dishes, but I HAVE to spotlight the Thai tea tres leches which was arguably one of my favorite desserts in the Seattle area. As a baker myself, I am quite picky, but this dessert is quite commendable because it ticks my 3 personal boxes of criteria for a stellar dessert: 1) perfect level of sweetness 2) moist (soaked in the Thai tea helps makes this a no brainer) 3) unique! I'm Indian, and love concocting fusion desserts (funny enough, my Ramsalai tres leches is one of my top 3 most popular desserts). This tres leches balanced all the flavors and textures seamlessly. Always have a good meal here! Ginger and scallion used to be a hainanese chicken shop that we've had great experiences eating in or taking out. They've recently switched concepts and are now a khao soi shop. You know when a restaurant focuses on one type of thing that they want to make certain they do it well. I believe their menu is still up for some changes at the moment but you can order from several meat protein options and one vegan/gf tofu option. Their broths are super tasty and rich combination of curry and coconut cream/milk and this is the first time I've tried a vegan khao soi broth! Definitely a comforting bowl of noodles for these cold months. read more
