Soup! You wouldn't necessarily think of ordering soup from a pizza place, but the soup of the day is consistently excellent. Served with scrummy garlic bread. The location of Giovanni's is a bit weird. It's actually inside the Valero gas station, but the pizza is pretty good. We went there twice and the first time, we got the steak pizza, which was the best pizza I've ever had. The second time we got a sausage pizza? But it wasn't that great. Maybe that's why I don't remember the name of the pizza. I'm a bit hesitant to try the other pizzas after the sausage pizza, but I will definitely be returning to get the steak pizza again. read more

Still my favorite pizza (next to Home Slice of course) but their white sauce pizza is the best in town for sure! They make the pie with fresh spinach, mushrooms and sausage. Then they fresh make the white sauce for each pie and pour it over the entire pizza. It is the best!!!! My first stop after ACL Fest every year and will be this year too! What's great is that you drive up and this place is in a convenience store and you don't expect it to be good. You order and look back at the kitchen and it seems "unfancy" and the price you pay is just average so how good could this place be? Turns out it's great. The pizza was slightly oily, just as it's supposed to be.The dough was thin and tasty. The service was quick. I'm hoping these guys break out into their own restaurant someday. I have eaten here nearly weekly for 3 years. Way above average in every conceivable category including consistency. This is not the best pizza you will ever eat, but it is excellent, and a cut above the competition. A little added bonus is the wine variety at the Valero. A real perk when you go to pick up dinner. Giovanni's is definitely good pizza and worth trying. Never mind that it is attached to the Valero gas station. That doesn't seem to bother over half of Austinites who go to Rudy's BBQ, right? Giovanni's makes a very good New York style pizza. You can't beat the price for gourmet/non-chain pizza although their large is smaller than Rounders or Home Slice. Still, I got a three-topping large for under $15. The pricing on their website is accurate contrary to what someone posted on here earlier. I believe the few bad reviews on Giovanni's is chalked up to either competitors masquerading as yelpers or people that simply can't give kudos to a pizzeria that is attached to a gas station. Any 1 or 2 star review on here is not the majority and very surprising to say the least. Try Giovanni's...trust me. read more

Being in South Austin, we decided to try this pizza stand over the weekend and it was mediocre. I wouldn't say we loved it, but definitely didn't hate it. In the future, I would drive the extra ten minutes to pick up Home Slice. For a quick pizza fix, Giovanni's is a decent choice! read more

I'd heard recommendations for this place for awhile, I finally just made it down tonight. I called ahead, but it took me longer than planned to get there. When I arrived, the cook told me he was making me a fresh batch. Mad points for that! (It only took a couple extra minutes, and it was piping hot and fresh.) The penne arrabiata (sp?) was quite good. Appropriately, it was not drowned in sauce, although a couple more chunks of tomato would be nice. My only criticism would be that it lacked a bit of kick (that was solved by red pepper flakes). I definitely look forward to trying some of their other pasta items. Bonus: I heard him on the phone taking an order, telling customer he could make something any way they liked -- I think to accommodate a vegetarian. More awesome. read more

First experience at Giovanni's and it was damn good...lived up to the great reviews I'd already heard. Just went with a simple pepp and shroom combo with a Caesar - lunch special for $5.50 and it worked out perfect...just right amount of food for lunch. The thin crust is crispy enough, but still totally foldable. Good sauce and toppings seem like decent quality. Nice folks that run the spot too! And what the hell is up with the Valero's beer and wine selection...it's gotta be one of the best of any gas station in town. Oh, Giovanni's...I had nearly given up on pizza in Austin until I met you. I've spent most of my life traveling, and as such, have experienced pizza from Hawaii to Italy, and all that's in between. But when I moved to Austin, I was painfully surprised to find NOTHING. The best I had before this was House Pizza...which is pretty good...but nothing compared to Giovanni's. This little pizza stand in the back of a gas station has, on every occasion I've visited, made me happy. Every single time, the pizza has been very good quality, both hot and cold (though sometimes it's hard to keep from eating it all while it's hot!) and the owner has always been nice. The first time I came in, while waiting for my pizza he randomly made both myself and my boyfriend a piece of garlic bread to munch on. Oh, and the price is as good as it gets. The cheapest pizza in town, too. The only complaint is that it's on the other side of town from me. But it's so good that I make excuses to travel to that side of town, just so I can get myself another pie. read more

My wife and I first had pizza from Giovanni's at a neighbors house. The pizza was a day old and cold, and by far the best pizza we've had in Austin. Two days later we stopped in and took away a Veggie and a Meat Lover, and a slice of Hawaiian. Since we were first timers, they threw in a cup of creamy tomato soup. Having moved from NYC less than a year ago, this was the closest that I could possibly imagine to being back in Manhattan ordering a pie. Julio is THE friendliest man you could possibly buy pizza from. I LOVE this guy! I love his pizza too, and his pastas (I've had them all), and every soup I've ever tried has been terrific. There is also a garden salad (ensalda de casa) and a Ceasar salad in individual and family sizes. I don't know how he and his tiny staff turn out so much great food in such a small space. You cannot go wrong with anything you order. No indoor seating, but he does have 4 or 5 picnic tables under shade outside. You will be sitting next to a parking lot and on a busy corner here - no atmosphere. The Valero Gas Station that houses Giovanni's carries a HUGE variety of beverages. You can definitely get something good to go with your pizza or pasta. It's best to call your order ahead of time and then pick up, as there's not any great place to wait inside the Valero. read more
