Was in LA for a weekend and got this reco. Nice location, not too far from the beach. The premise: a bakery. The reality: a cafeteria. We arrived at 1:45 PM on a Sunday afternoon. First of all, it's unclear where to enter. You enter into the seating area. Then you enter the doors that say "IN/OUT" (use "IN" to get in). It's awkward because it looks and feels like the kitchen door and there are servers going in and out with large plates of food. Anyway, you get in, and then take a left and go get a number. Then get in line and *wait for your number to be called* because only then you get to order. There's time to think about what you want because there's probably a line but having a number is crucial. We ordered our food - a few sandwiches and a salad. Don't forget to take the number table stand they give you. Go back out those doors (OUT), and look for seating. Good luck to you because on a gorgeous weekend, there won't be any seating. Go sit on the benches. Nobody really helps you find a place to sit. If you speak good Spanish, then do that. Or take your elderly grandma because you'll get seated faster (and your grandma will like to get out). The food may arrive earlier than you think. I was wandering around looking for seating and happened to be carrying my number around (this is different than the first number, ok? it's the table stand number), and the server asked me where I was sitting and I said, "I don't have a table," and so he just handed me a plate with one sandwich on it and left. So, they don't help you find a table even though there is a sign that says they do. Anyway, waited around for about 15 minutes, got a salad and another sandwich again with no table. Finally swooped in like vultures on a vacated table (still dirty), and ate our food. Oh yeah, this is a restaurant, not a game where you find tables. Anyway, let's talk about the food. The market salad was a pile of very fresh lettuce with a nice dressing on it. My daughter said she felt like a rabbit eating it so I ate most of it. The American Banh Mi was not spicy, so they nailed that. It was pretty good. The salmon burger was proclaimed to be, "delicious" by my other daughter, so there's that. All in all, the food was good. The ambiance reminded me of those movies where people order salads at an outdoor patio restaurant - for obvious reasons. I don't know if the baked goods are really good because we didn't have any. The bread on the sandwich was good though. I had four stars, but after re-reading my review, I'm knocking it down to a three. Not bad. The seating thing, though. There's plenty of patio space outside and the front is always busy -- make sure to pick which line to stand in whether you are getting express (coffee, pastries) or food (in the back). Our server felt rushed to take our plates even when we were still holding our sandwich. I feel like for charging an automatic gratuity this wasn't the type of service expected. I like the decor and layout of the space. I enjoy that the entrance is demure and somewhat secretive in the neighborhood. I love a good grab and go counter and the outdoor seating space is ample. - I wouldn't call the menu extensive however, they do have a great selection. I would've liked to see more gluten-free, vegan and grain free options. I did enjoy my sandwich and I thought the tea was tasty. - The service was quick, easy and casual. Food was good but nothing that you can't find elsewhere. The employees were incredibly rude. There were two women, specifically, who kept yelling (not just speaking loudly for people to hear), rolling their eyes at the guests and sighing loudly. One was at the express lane (coffee and pastries only) which had a singular visible sign that can easily get covered up by guests lining up. She was visibly irritated at the guests who accidentally thought this was the main order line. The other at the drink counter for guests to clear out at the area for drink pick ups for employees only. Mind you, there were zero signs here and the only directive that you get as a guest is "Go all the way down for your drinks." Just FYI, we're customers, we do not work there so we're. Don't take your frustrations out on us. We didn't design the inefficient circulation of this cafe with separate inconspicuous lines for the express lane (coffee and pastries), the kitchen menu which you have to get a number to be served and the drink pick up. Sad because Gjusta was the very first place I ate in LA the first time I ever came here before I moved to the city and I remember it being amazing. I didn't want to believe a lot of the reviews on here.... However, it was just really sub par. I am a sucker for a banh mi but you couldn't even taste any pate and the chicken was dry. It was under seasoned and served cold even though it was supposed to be hot. Just sad. The tahini brownie I took home also was not good. Overly bitter and cakey. Not chocolatey at all or fudgey somehow. The woman at the counter was very sweet though and helped me walk through bakery options with no nuts in them. I came on a Wednesday and it was still pretty busy but also warning when it's cold in Santa Monica you may be a bit chilly outside. It's cute but they need more heaters. They will yell at you to move. You move to the only space you can find in the 50 people milling around looking for space as well. They call your number if you do not run to the cash register by trampling over everyone and scream its you, they skip your number. You miss the number, sorry! They will act inconvenienced, lecture you about not missing your number, they only move up, not back and then begrudgingly will let you place your order. Don't worry, you will get more attitude, this time from a manager! Order was placed, manager went to check on a salad (if it was still available), it was....she forgot to ring it in. When she (with attitude) read back the order....good luck hearing anything with the music and million people talking....we missed that she missed the greek salad. All food comes out everyone is eating except one and she had to go track down the food, wait even longer for the salad and then eat by herself which she just ended up throwing away. I come here often. This was one of the most pretentious, attitude-filled experiences to date. I think this spot has become popular enough where they start treating their customers like crap. The ticket system just doesn't work. If I have to wait around for more than 45 mins in a line to order my food, I don't want to be paying their prices. Also, you or your party can't sit on a table until you place an order. They have some benches which is great if the afternoon sun isn't blazing down on you. We were simply standing at a small table with no chairs (sun was out at full blast and we just wanted some shade since the indoors didn't have an inch of place) and an employee came up to us and said we can't do that. I had an infant and a toddler. I understand that we are in the "people with kids are not my problem" times but nobody was going to use a tiny table with no chairs. The bread is good but farmers markets do just as well and the vendors are ten times nicer. Wouldn't recommend this place if you have kids (you're probably fine if it isn't busy) and/or you don't want to feel like the restaurant is doing you some grand favour by allowing you to eat. read more

The order taker declined. I asked to please ask the manager, he declined. The manager waked by and I politely asked, and he said "we don't do that here". Cons - The ordered system was really confusing and we stood inside for a good 10 minutes in line before finding out that was have to grab a numbered ticket from a pretty nondescript ticket machine to get out place in line. The matcha was AWFUL. I can't remember the last time I ordered something and couldn't finish it because it was so bad. Tasted like freshly cut grass. Why someone would give them less than five stars is mind boggling. Yes, it's expensive. Yes, parking sucks. And yes, it'll take forever to get your order. But the experience of dining here goes beyond the food. The storefront gives off the vibes of an old time market place. There's hustle and bustle and it slightly feels like the set of a film. Despite the hate, they also have a constant line out the front door and a picturesque patio on the back porch. I love that they sell a number of house-made items, including jams, honey, and fermented goodies. They even own the space next door, where they sell Gjusta home goods and beauty products. I've probably eaten at Gjusta about 15 times and I've enjoyed everything I've tried! I love the country sourdough so much - I've purchased many loaves and I really appreciate that they slice the loaf for you if you ask. The soft scrambled always hits for a light breakfast, as does the frittata. The fish plate is a fun brunch idea too! The pastries here have been solid, but to be really honest, I don't think any of them have really blown me away yet: my favorites so far are the carrot cake and the ricotta bundt cake. I often get the matcha tea, which is nice and strong. The outdoor patio is lovely and breezy! Service is a bit variable, and it does get extremely busy here on the weekends, but I've never had any negative experiences other than wait times getting long on a busy day. read more

We finally made it there on a weekend, it seemed very hectic, we had to move to a shaded table as the sun was getting very strong. They have lots of pastries behind the counter, croissants, cookies, cakes, etc. They have a big outdoor courtyard with seating and they'll bring your food to you when ready. They automatically charge a 20% service fee on all bills fyi. Beyond that hefty service charge, menu prices are quite steep here, imo overpriced. Build your own sandwich: we got pastramilax on an open-faced sesame bagel with dijon, sprouts, capers, pickled red onions. each topping has a different price, and none of those prices are listed on their menu lol, so it can get expensive depending on your add-ons. avocado was $5 extra which was found criminal. it was good but somewhat standard to any other lox on bagel place in LA.
