My wife and I have lived all over the U.S. and have been disappointed in the Asian cuisine in Tucson - until we tried Golden House this past Sunday. We had the Meat Sampler which included among the best egg rolls we've every had, plump and tasty ribs, and beef kabobs which were a nice surprise. We ordered the House Special Fried Rice which was exceptional with good-sized shrimp. Our entrees were Cashew Chicken and Chicken with Snow Peas, both excellent. After eight years in Tucson, we have finally found Asian food that meets (exceeds) our expectations. Even though this Chinese establishment is within the neighborhood, I had not taken the opportunity to get food here. We ordered Takeout; the entrees ordered were ready on time. We ordered Szechuan Chicken. Orange Chicken and Almond Chicken. The Orange Chicken was prepared without having meat simmered in orange dressing, but were given a side portion of orange dressing to add to taste. Just did not work for us. Add the fact that all three dishes had fresh veggies, crunchy and tasteful, but the ratio of veggies on the Szechuan was more like having Szechuan Onion Chicken (too much onion), and this first visit missed the mark. read more

I try to find these little spots around town to see whats new. I found this cause I was at a different office today, and man I love this place. I came in and its your basic family owned Asian place, nothing special. We were in a hurry due to a short work lunch and the waiter said he would help us get in and out. we got 2 orders of veggie egg rolls, vegetarian friend rice, and beef lo mein. My guest is vegetarian so you know which one of those she ate haha. This place as the best veggie egg rolls I have ever had, no joke. I will be coming back just for those alone. the beef lo mein was also delicious. the noodles were thicker then I was use to, but no complaints here. my guest said the vegetarian fried rice was some of the best she has had also. Their service is amazing, friendly, and customer driven. Every time I have went into this location, I have been greeted "like family"! Normally when you dine in at any asian restaurant, you are bombarded with a lot of food options. Here is where I cannot praise customer service enough. The servers are always able to properly explain the food options! To me, that goes along way. Aside from the exceptional customer service, their menu selection is always a sure food pleaser. There crab puffs are a must! I have ordered the crab puffs every visit. Crisped and cooked beautifully. No oils or sogged crab puff. jam packed with flavor! Typically, I do not order any appetizers at restaurants, but I highly recommend trying them. Their main course meals, no matter what you choose, are fresh and cooked to perfection. All their veggies and meat/seafood selections are always properly cooked. No undercooked veggies or meat! Do remember that this restaurant is located near old spanish trail area. I used to come to this place when it was set up more like a deli and it was decent; however, the new owners have transformed this to a delicious, great little restaurant. I'm really picky with hot and sour soup, due to the consistency and the general lack of flavor, but the one here is just about perfect. I also ordered the sesame beef and crab puffs (which came with my special) and both were great!! The puffs were exactly that; puffy and crabby. The beef was tender and sweet. I haven't been to many Chinese restaurants in the area, so it's hard to judge this against the standard in the area. I love that this place has "healthy" options and a lot of choices. However, I find that the food is just too bland. I have a lot of food restrictions, and have had to change the way I cook to accommodate. I am Chinese and grew up with Chinese food, so I understand how the modifications can change the taste slightly... but not like this. I mean, velveting the meat makes a huge difference, which they don't do... the sauces are.. well, I can't think of any other word to use other than bland, and it's not an issue of salt. I felt disappointed because I can definitely cook each meal on their menu better than what I've received, and I'm not that great a cook. I came here twice to make sure I wasn't experiencing a fluke, but it's been consistently just below mediocre for me. I really wanted to like this place, but I don't think I'll be coming back. Like I said, I haven't been to any other Chinese restaurant in Tucson, so I suspect that my personal taste for Chinese food might be a little high. I'd say take my review with a grain of salt as I'm only a new Tucson resident. On the bright side though, service was great, and there's a calming atmosphere in the area. The food and service were both great! I had the sweet and sour pork which was fine perfectly! The vegetables were fresh and cooked to perfection- not over cooked like many places. The best Chinese food in the world!!! Its so good and they accommodate different diets and are super careful about everything. I have celiac disease which means no gluten, they can make most things on the menu gluten free and the servers double check everything to make sure it's safe. Their hot and sour soup is DELICIOUS, I'm not a huge fan of hot and sour in general but theirs is so good that I cannot get enough. My husband and I have been coming here for at least four years, and our kids have been enjoying it since they were babies, it's consistently good, the owner is incredibly sweet, Tony is our favorite server, even when he's super busy he is friendly and makes sure we are well taken care of. Their lo mein has these incredible thick noodles with a perfect texture, I enjoy it with beef or chicken. The Kung pao chicken is amazing, always with fresh vegetables and the perfect flavor. My vegetarian wife is usually nervous about chinese food. You never know what some restaurants consider vegetarian and sometimes it is hard to get an answer. The menu here contains many vegetarian options and the owner seems to understand what it is to be vegetarian or vegan. The food was fresh and flavorful and inexpensive. New owners!!!! My kids and I used to eat here when they were younger, but it became way too greasy and not too many vegan choices. Usually we go to Guillen because it's healthier than many and has awesome meatless choices. However, we live on the East Side so driving to Speedway/Country Club is a pain. Today when getting pedis at Mimosa (another awesome place BTW) Nail, my daughter and I caught the sign saying Golden House is under new ownership and now has healthy food with vegan options. We just had to give it a try again. Are we glad that we did! First of all, it has been remodeled. It used to be pretty spare in the decor, not someplace you would want to sit down and eat. Now it's much more pleasant in the ambiance department. The lady who waited on us was super friendly and sweet. She was open about how her family has bought the place and made all the changes - just this month! She was helpful with the ordering process as well. Besides the eggrolls we ordered, she brought a bowl of crispy noodles with sauce on the side for dipping as an appetizer. Yum! The food. Totally delicious. Obviously fresh. Very non-greasy despite the decision made to order tempura. Sauces were super tasty and abundant. Last time I had Guillien I was aware that while it tasted good, the sweet and sour sauce was way too red, indicating red food coloring being added. This sauce was light pink, and not too sweet or too thick. Just right! My daughter's General Tao was tasty and did not look fakely colored as well. Service was friendly and prompt all around, food was great and fresh tasting, and we walked out spending only about $20. Both of us only ate half our meals, as the servings were quite generous. Less than average food here. Service was nice. Very friendly. But the food was not that good. 1 star for the food. 3 stars for the service. Egg rolls were made with chicken. Tasted ok but pork is preferred here for its taste. The hot and sour soup was ok but looked pale and unappetizing not rich like it should. Fried rice was very dry, needed some oil to help edibility. Cabbage used for the egg rolls, sesame beef and house low main was sliced too thick. Low main noodles were white and the dish looked unappetizing. Sesame beef was good. Not great but good. If we weren't starved we may have walked away from this. Won't go back. We went here for the first time because of the reviews and pictures. We're first time customers and so far, so good. Ordered weeknight delivery of sweet 'n sour chicken, mu shu vegetable and chicken chop suey. All were tasty and fresh, generous with the chicken and not at all oily. Hubby is particular about chicken chop suey and he was pleased. Entrees were plenty moist and not 'soupy' with sauce. Our only complaint is the mu shu contained mostly cabbage and little else, hence the 4 stars. We had been loyal to Peking Palace for nearly 20 years but never returned after our first visit under new ownership. It just wasn't the same. Delivery was fast and the driver was neat and courteous.
