Stopped by here for lunch today and really enjoyed it! The hardest part was definitely parking -- it can be a little tricky -- but there are some street stalls and a few lots nearby, so it's manageable. Once you step inside, the AC is blasting (which honestly makes you crave something hot and comforting), and the food absolutely delivers. We tried the pho, the look funn seafood noodles, and the vermicelli noodle soup -- everything was flavorful, piping hot, and hit the spot. We also ordered the spring rolls and the roll-up plate, which ended up being one of my favorites! Fresh, tasty, and super satisfying. Overall, great food, cozy vibes, and I'll definitely be back soon! Service was also so quick and easy.

Support local family owned business. This Vietnamese restaurant has been in Honolulu Chinatown for more than 20+ years. Their PHO beef and pork meat balls are freshly made with No preservative.

Banh hoi was cooked to perfection. Everything was delicious!

Ordered banh hoi with bbq pork, beef ball, and a fried fishcake which came wrapped around a sliced stick of sugar cane. Talk about infusion of flavors! The fresh vegetables (mint, basil, cucumbers, and lettuce) were so crispy and clean, it made the DIY experience easy and enjoyable. Everything from the rice paper wraps to the condiments was authentically delicious! Can't forget the pickled veg & peanut w/onion garnish too. The place was packed but it was surprisingly quiet...just how I like it. 100% recommend!

The beginning of this month, this seemingly persistent virus finally caught up to me. Felt like I went through the wringer (does anyone still use this idiom???). I was sapped of energy. 5 days later I needed to return to work--fever free and negative. What can I have for lunch? A lot of food places outside are usually unhealthy. If healthy, it's cold and raw. Thankfully, there's always Pho to save the day. I went on a Pho quest to restore my Force--visiting only new places along with an old one and only in Chinatown. I started my quest at Golden River Restaurant. It's been at the corner of River and North King Street for decades. I remember going there a couple of times as a boy with my Yeye (paternal grandfather). Everytime we go to Chinatown, we have Bahn Mi, usually at Bale (or we go to McDonalds :p). I was a child who never complained or threw any temper tantrums to go somewhere, and whatever food you put in front me, I'll eat and finish it (all still true today). I write this review having already tried the Pho at almost every Vietnamese restaurant within that block (one left, who knew it closes on FRIDAY!!). Every place has its pros and cons. If I had to rank Golden River, it'd be at the bottom, but that doesn't mean it was bad. The pros: the amount of ingredients. You get a lot more of everything here. The beef tendon and rare steak are the best here. Big pieces of tendon and tender rare steak. Plenty of vegetables, sliced onion, cilantro, and scallions. Noodles were also plentiful and had taste. Another pro was the seating. It was surprisingly quiet, cool, and comfortable inside. You could not hear all the cars passing by. The con was the broth. It didn't taste bad. It was just very one note. I could not taste the herbs and spices. It didn't feel savory or hearty. It was almost like salt/MSG and water. But all the meat and fresh ingredients made up for it. Overall, the pho wasn't bad. You get the most ingredients here. Just the broth doesn't measure up. It's still better than anything outside of Chinatown, but within Chinatown, other places are better. Service was good though. Food came out fast.

The Special Combination Pho with Rare Steak, Tendon, Tripe, Beef Brisket & Meatball.

We stopped by here for lunch today, along the way to watch a Korean movie at Regal Dole Cannery. Service was quick and respectful as usual. My wife ordered the Pho with Tendon, and I, the Combination Pho. First the leafy greens and bean sprouts arrived. We use this time to remove the leaves from the stems in preparation to soaking them in the hot soup. Shortly afterwards, our piping hot bowls of pho were served. My wife enjoys hers with Chili Garlic Sauce, which has a clean aftertaste and enhances the already tasty broth. At most other Vietnamese restaurants, we have to specifically request this sauce, but here at Golden River, it's available at the tables along with other condiments. Although we both had medium-sized pho, they were enough to warm us up and satisfy our appetites on this cold rainy day. This is our go-to place to enjoy a bowl of beef noodle soup when we're in the area. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hawaiikorea/permalink/1835728043468212/

    Banh cuon cha lua

I just moved to Oahu and was craving banh cuon so I ordered this dish to go. I wanted to love it so badly but the flavors were underwhelming. It wasn't seasoned very well and even the fish sauce tasted bland. Trust me, I didn't think that was possible. Now, I don't know if I am just being biased because I am so use to my moms banh cuon but as I reflect on this dish, I would not recommend this dish. I will give this place another try because the service was great! I will try other dishes though.

I remember back in the day there used to be a really long line to dine at this restaurant over the weekend (it seemed much bigger back then, or maybe it's because I was also very small) lol Parking is a little rough around the edges in Chinatown but you can definitely score a free parking spot on Sundays! This is one of two places that I know of that offer banh coun. It's one of my favorite dishes and not many places offer this. It was about $12 a plate and takes about 15-20 minutes to make. The restaurant was practically empty when I went, but a few other patrons came in shortly after as it was becoming lunch hour. Service was pretty standard to any Vietnamese restaurant and I'll definitely be back again when I have cravings

Egg yolk condensed milk with drip coffee

Wow! This hidden gem has some really delicious food, great service and unique menu items. I'm already looking forward to going back! They have Bánh cuốn which is toothsome soft rice noodle wrappers (almost like if mochi and ravioli had a baby) stuffed with seasoned mince pork, woodear mushrooms and shallots, with meatloaf slices and topped with fried shallots and green onions. Served with lettuce, mint, basil and bean sprouts. Theirs was as amazing as I remember it when I was in Hanoi. Definitely try this dish! It's hard to find in most Vietnamese restaurants. We also got the Bánh xèo, a savory fried pancake made of rice flour, water, and turmeric powder stuffed with tender slices of pork, shrimp and bean spouts and served with lettuce, basil and mint to make wraps with. The pancake is fried in coconut oil to give it a distinct flavor and the pancake is crispy. This was another amazing dish! We also got the spring rolls (not pictured) and they were also perfectly cooked and the filling was savory and properly portioned in the wrapper. The owner was willing to make me a Hanoi style iced coffee, which had raw egg yolk mixed with condensed milk and served with strong drip style cafe du monde brand coffee. It was rich/ sweet/delicious (and strong!). Service was very friendly and helpful and the food came out fast.

Interior of the restaurant. Very peaceful with music.

First time eating inside this restaurant after passing by it hundreds of times. The pho combination tastes good but the soup gets cold fast. I still enjoyed it.

    Beef and brisket pho

Went in again. Only my second review but I've been there numerous times. This time back to dine in again. What I really like about their pho is the broth. It's superb. These days branded out to pho not only with rare beef but with brisket also. Always get spring rolls but today Ordered BBQ pork and spring roll over rice but spring roll sold out! Oh No! That was literally my reaction. They substituted summer rolls for me. My daughter is addicted to their iced coffee. Such good coffee, served in a coffee press. Is it called phin? It's so rich and sweet, even a non coffee drinker like myself like the roast flavor of this type of iced coffee. I usually have luck parking either on King St or River St (parking meter). Worst case scenario, municipal parking structure corner of Nimitz and River St. They close at 2:30pm at this, point but they stay open if customers are there. Would love to give them my support so check them out!

It has been a while since I have found a very good Vietnamese restaurant that still offers authentic dishes, true taste, no skipping on ingredients, and generous portions at a reasonable price. Of course I had to go to Chinatown and the most sketchiest part to find it, but it was well worth it. Located at the end of Chinatown at the corner or River and N. King it isn't exactly the most pleasant of locations. The building as well as the surroundings are rather dubious and ominous in appearance. However, despite as bad as everything looks, it is safe and once you get inside, you are in a cute little well kept restaurant being taken care of very friendly staff. I ordered the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup also know as Bún Bò Huế. What an amazing soup. It was spicy, but not like rocket launching blow your head off. Of course I added a good heaping spoonful of there incredible homemade chili sauce because I do like it rocket launching. The broth flavor was rich with lot of great meat tidbits of various sorts. It was also a lot larger than I expected and if had know the size would be so generous, would have probably gone for the medium size. The spring rolls that I also got were very fresh and you could tell made with care. I like the fact that you could order a small plate of 2 and it still came with all the fixings that come with Vietnamese spring rolls to make lettuce wraps. Be brave and head down to check this place out. It really is worth it.

    Veggie egg rolls

We enjoyed a flavorful lunch. The veggie egg rolls were light and crispy. The vegetables were tender and seasoned just right. The pho broth was clear and flavorful. The meat was thin and tender. A true delight.

I always get beef combination meat out side at Golden River Restaurant Downtown Honolulu! Its clear beef broth has rich savory flavor. The #thai #basil , #herbs and #beansprout add refreshing scent to the soup as well as crunchy texture to the bowl. Meat ball, rare steak, tendons, and all other meats create layers of rich full-body #umami ! This is a perfect mouthful satisfaction with comforting touch for my weekend! What food are you enjoying today? Mahalo for stopping by to my post #enjoyfoodhawaii

So the thing about coming to Fun Station is the "suspended flying noodle thingy" which I didn't go for, but if you like Instagramable stuffs, then I supposed you would probably go for that flying-noodle dish. As for me, I mainly came to try their Minute Chicken Cake Noodles, and as a bonus......... I actually got a 20% discount thanks to my friend - Jennifer C. who let a Bruddah know about da DEALAGES in da Sunday food section newspaper, as they had a coupon! The Sunday morning when I came with my friend, I can clearly see that this restaurant was thriving, as every table in the restaurant was taken. Fun Station specializes in noodles, but if you're not into that, they do serve other items like - soups, vegetable dishes, rice plates, & porridge (jook). Upon looking over the menu, we ordered the following items - 1. Frrrrrrried Chicken Wings ($9.95) for an appetizer 2. Minute Chicken Cake Noodles ($17.95 - minus da 20% coupon DEALAGES) 3. Beef Brisket Tendon & Won Ton in soup ($18.95) What can I say about da grub??? Da chicken wings came out hot & crispy. Although they featured only "flats" vs. drums (I like drums), I must say da wings was nicely executed. As for the Minute Chicken Cake Noodles.........nicely plated on a fancy smanshy panda plate. The cake noodles weren't drowning in gravy, so the noodles stayed crispy on the dish. I really liked how they did this dish, and would easily come back here to eat it again. My friend had the Beef Brisket Tendon & Won Ton soup. The dish looked good, and there weren't any complaints, so I take it that it was pretty ono! Overall, a very satisfying meal and the service here was on point, as the staff was friendly & very efficient. Easy 5 stars for the Minute Chicken Cake Noodles! Chance 'em!

Then the food starts arriving. We ordered way more than we needed and almost everything impressed me. The chow fun was cooked exactly the way I like it. Chewy, smoky and never overcooked. My only complaint was that it leaned a little saltier than I prefer, but it was still very good. The Hainan chicken was the surprise of the meal. Perfectly tender with an incredible ginger sauce that I'd happily put on just about anything. Even the dishes I normally avoid won me over. I've never been much of a lotus root person, but theirs was crisp, savory and honestly delicious. The wontons were another highlight. Since we skipped the noodles, they generously gave us extra wontons instead, which was a really thoughtful touch. What really pushed this place from good to memorable, though, was the staff. We were there with our two and four year old and they couldn't have been kinder. They brought over little toys to keep the kids occupied, checked on us throughout the meal and made us feel genuinely welcome. None of it felt forced. It was just warm, thoughtful hospitality and that's something I always remember long after I've forgotten exactly what I ate. The bathroom situation isn't ideal, you have to use the one outside the restaurant, but that's really my only complaint beyond the slightly salty chow fun. This isn't the place I'd recommend for date night or a long evening out. It's the kind of neighborhood restaurant you walk into expecting very little, then leave thinking, that was a lot better than it had any right to be. We'll definitely be back.

I finally decided why not and came with a friend on new years day lunch time. They were pretty busy already after just 30ish minutes of opening (12pm). Service: We were seated immediately and the service method is pretty simple, you scan the QR code and order through there. My main gripe with this service method is the waitresses aren't as attentive, we couldn't really ask any questions prior to ordering and even after ordering, I had to stand up to the front and wave someone down to pay for our order (as they had a special they had to apply before we paid). We ordered: - Spicy Beef Pancake: 10/10, didn't expect to like this so much as well. Not that spicy to be honest. More like a light spicy flavor. The beef inside was also juicy. - Pan-fried pork bun: 10/10, I was honestly looking forward to this more than the XLB and I was correct to do so. The filling was juicy like a XLB but the dough was also fluffy, doughy, AND has a crispy bottom. Would come back just for this and recommend this 10 times over!! - Sui Mai: 8.8/10; this was like any other good sui mai you may get at different dimsum places. Just pork though, no mushroom or seafood chucks like some other spots. - Steamed Beef with Sticky Rice: 8.1/10. This wasn't bad by any means but just didn't compare to the rest of the items. I didn't like how some parts were super fatty. - Xiao Long Bao: 10/10, the wrapped is thin but thick enough for me to pick up the dumpling without it popping. The soup was flavorful and so was the pork within. They had a special going on which made our XLB be like $5 instead of the $14 it usually is. We were super surprised of how little our bill was give that we were stuffed at the end of the meal and had some leftovers. Even without the discount it would've been a great deal. I heavily recommend, especially the pan-fried pork bun and XLB!!

Sometimes Chinese food can get super saucy so the small plates - cucumbers, rolls, baos, and veg - work for me. It's serious 家常菜 or home-style cooking or quick food you'd find on the street: ong-choy, tomato-braised scrambled egg, garlic cabbage, essentially all the greats, shareable. Seasons also offers the beef soupy noodle sets, but when it's 85+ degrees out and sunny and 80% humidity, I do question ppl's judgement. I've always loved the Plaza, empty and partly abandoned, bec/ the design is conducive to good airflow and cooling, a much underappreciated architectural element in modern downtowns. But the bums and indigent love it more and sadly always leave some je ne sais quoi. Seasons finds itself across from the dim sum behemoth in Chinatown, Legends, but that's a different flavor profile. Still, quite nice to have variety.

We were told that the first batch would be served about 11 a.m. so we quickly put our order in. The first thing that caught my attention, was the savory aroma of their 5-spice ground pork being cooked. You can add this as a topping to the noodle dish. The second thing that caught my attention, was the labor of love going in to each order of fresh pulled noodles. You can watch him stretch the dough ball and slap it on the counter before he boils each batch with careful preparation. The third thing that caught my attention, was their adorable mother, helping to slice the cucumbers and top each dish with crushed iso peanuts. Do not forget to order the side of pickled bittermelon....so good!! From beginning to end, this was an incredible experience of all my senses! To see and hear them at work and then to taste the delicious sesame sauce on the fresh pulled noodles....WOW! The soft noodles, the crisp bittermelon, and the savory sauce....super delish! Seriously, go early to place your order. The wait is totally worth it :) Will come back next time to try other menu items.

When we went, the menu focused on udon: +Hot Yamakake Udon with Quail Egg (a special) +Cold Yamakake Udon (a special) +Hot Udon +Cold Udon The special udon dishes are servied with tororo (grated mountain yam), housemade tsukudani (seaweed braised in a sweet Japanese sauce), crispy nori, green onions, and an option to add wasabi. We went for both the hot and cold udon specials - I think it was a consensus that we would have liked to have more noodles in the dish. This is definitely a sweeter dish, with the tororo and the tsukudani. The place already had a long line, and the best way to enjoy would be to dine-in. Note that if you do order a carry-out, the quail egg would not be included. +ordering online is available +changing menu of noodle dishes +popup at Fishcake

Ambiance: casual Food: a great place to satisfy Szechuan cravings. Would recommend getting their spicy dumplings (so good). Also tried their sweet potato noodles and it was like a more chewy rice noodle. Would also recommend getting their mung bean drink (with free refills) that goes well with their spicy dishes.

Service was excellent. The nice lady checked in on us several times and provided extra napkins and refills. Ambiance: cozy. As with their sister restaurants, scan the qr code and order away. I really liked the variety and being able to order sides or small dishes. The mung bean soup is delicious and served chilled. They do give free refills. This was my first time trying it, and 10/10 would order again. Mini hot and sour wonton: first time trying and won't be my last. 10/10 Beef pancakes were good, slightly different from Mian and Bao, and delicious. Ice Jelly: good cooling dessert. Not too sweet. Perfect finisher for all the spicy food. Pickled sides: I really loved the spicy back fungus. I'm a huge sucker for woodear mushroom so I was also glad I could order a side of it just to toss into my soup! So good! Everything was really good, and I can't wait to try something new as we make our way through their menu.
