First time here. Was recommended by my barber when I asked if he knew any place that had bahn cuon. He told me the name was Kim Ha, try googling that. Wish he knew google maps knew the place as golden river restaurant.. I've been to maybe 5 Vietnamese restaurants on the island so far, and none offered bahn cuon. When I got to Kim Ha, around lunch time, it was somewhat busy but seemed like people were on their ways out. The bahn cuon was different than I'm used to, the rice "pancake" was thicker than normally. It still tasted good thou. Until I find another restaurant that offers it, I will continue going here to get my fix. As for pho I go to Pho Minh Thu since it's closer to my place and isn't too pricey. read more

It was with my boyfriends parents I love pho & this is the best place I've ever ate PHO I try to go there a lot now and I do I go very often after trying this place my bf mom them been regulars for A very long time and I'm next on that list. I get the spicy beef noodle soup and OMG it is the best ever!!! Like I love it so much I love the jalapeños and all the vegetables you get they give very generous portion. We also got the spring rolls which I freaking love so much it tastes so good!!!! and we get a order of side chicken wings, which also taste very bomb. I love the crisp of it. Though it does take a while to make but it's definitely worth the wait. My boyfriend also had tried their Ramen for the first time because he doesn't really like FHO but he said he really like those noodles cause he usually just get barbecue chicken plate which is also very good but I'm sticking to the pho. Parking is a little rough, but very much worth all the trouble. Golden River is my go to place for Pho in China town. With the plethora of Pho places, what makes me choose to eat here?!? Well firstly, their broth is ah-mazing! Secondly, the portions are much more filling than other places, and lastly, the prices are LOW! I always get their house special egg noodle. I've been on the hunt for decent Hainanese Chicken Rice for quite some time now. My favorite place for it went downhill in flavor and quality, ever since changing ownership (twice!). I have to be honest: the only reason why I ate here was because I showed up at To Chau at 2:32pm, two minutes after closing time. The sign also says "Pho Kim Ha" and something in Chinese. However, I was more than satisfied with the food here. The Vietnamese food here was more than comparable to a place in Little Saigon, Orange County, California. I especially recommend the "Bun Bo Hue." It's a spicy Vietnamese noodle soup from the central region of Hue in Vietnam. It's very delicious and pretty rare here in Hawaii. My friend had the crispy noodle dish. It had a very good brown sauce with mushrooms and beef. It was very good as well. I could not find parking on River St. heading makai so I ended up parking at the structure on Maunakea between Hotel and King. Located in what I call the Pho Corner, Golden River has a bit of heavy competition. Next to it, is the legendary To Chau, and behind that is Cuu Long. So how does this place stay around for so long? No idea. Compared to the next door establishments, Golden River is much cleaner and serves as a homely Asian feeling. Those who has gone to Asia and visited small rural restaurants would know what I mean. Service does take a bit longer than expected but they did serve us hot tea complimentary on the house which is a great touch. As most pho restaurants, I would order their combination pho and that's exactly what I got this time in medium size. Their size is well proportioned and generally this size can satisfy my hunger well. The broth was extremely strong. Kind of reminds me of when you first had pho. It does seem there was quite a bit of msg in there though. Meats were an issue for me in this since although the rare beef was fresh, lean, and nicely cut, the other pieces of meat were scarce. Their beef balls looked homemade and not processed ones found in your local Asian market. Overall, Golden River also serves Chinese dishes as it is also a Chinese restaurant on top of being a Vietnamese restaurant. I celebrated my birthday this year with co-workers by having Pho. A coworker of mine suggested that we try something different, so we were in the outskirts of Chinatown and ventured into this quaint little Pho shop. Exploring is what's good for the community and supporting local is key to happiness - at least for your stomach. With that said, Golden River restaurant / Pho Kim An is a cute restaurant that's just small with at most 10 tables, with clear windows you can see out to River Street and parts of Aala Park if you are bored waiting for your food. It was quite packed when we came. A pack of 6 of us stumbled in here and it felt like a Chinese mom and pop restaurant, among other things, even though our server spoke Chinese too. The restaurant was buzzing and it felt like a good vibe coming here, especially on my birthday. Golden River Restaurant / Pho Kim An specializes in both Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine. The restaurant is located on the corner of North King and River Street. There are private parking lots scattered in and around Chinatown, so that's your best bet for it. If you are like me, many bus routes get in and out of the downtown and Chinatown area, so you can look into that. They are open from 8am to 4pm daily, so if you wanted to, you can totally get Pho for breakfast! Everything tends to shut down in Chinatown after 4pm, so best for lunch or whenever you want Pho or Chinese food here. My experience here was a pleasant and average one. The noise level was not noisy, so that was good. Golden River Restaurant accepts credit cards as well as cash, so that's always a plus in my book. I ordered the usual combination Pho, but did not get the summer rolls as well. I didn't want to overkill on food, since i had some homemade brownies like 2 hours beforehand. A few of my coworkers also got their bowls of Pho, but one person opted to try one of their rice plates, which looked pretty good when it was served. I was happy to get Pho and used an insane amount of shirachi sauce to commemorate my birthday, along with the jalapeños floating in the broth. I can say that this restaurant was clean enough and the attention to detail can be improved, but it was your typical Pho restaurant even if they serve Chinese cuisine as well here. The broth itself wasn't rich, but it had flavor in it. Not the deep flavor that I love, but it was pretty good. After lumping the bean sprouts and basil, I went to town on it, but not before the shirachi sauce went in and I was loving it. The tables were typical Chinese, a thin glass over the actual table that had a paper with the restaurant specials underneath it. We opted to read the menu and it turned out to be a good meal. The prices here were a bit cheaper than what I was used to. $6.75 for a small, $7.75 for a medium, and a $8.75 for a large. Wish I did get that order of summer rolls, but I was full to remember ordering them. Can't say that throughly enjoyed my Pho that day, but it was one of the better ones this time around, even though I haven't been for a while. Overall, can't complain about this place. I wouldn't have known to come to this place if it wasn't for my coworker bringing us during our lunch break. He brought us here because we've been bugging him to bring us to a Vietnamese restaurant where we're able to make our own summmer rolls. The type where we literally use our hands to wrap the meat and veggies with the rice paper. He ordered us a combination place which included sugar cane shrimp, meat balls, bbq pork, vermiccilli, basil, mint. Huge plate!!! They also brought out a bunch of rice paper, lettuce, and a bowl of water for you to wet your rice paper. The meats were all very flavorful, but will say will prob just order the sugar cane shrimp next time because that was my favorite. It wasn't my first time making a summer roll but was my first time doing it in a restaurant away from home. It's a great way to enjoy your time with friends and family. I'll say to temper your expectations on the place itself. It is located in Chinatown so don't expect a super clean environment. I actually laughed once because the plates and bowls they served to us was a little dirty, but that never bothers me as long as they come back with cleaner ones after mentioning to them which they did. THE QUICK AND DIRTY: A pho review only... A great pho restaurant on the west side of Chinatown along the river. The portions of pho are average however the sides that they provide for the pho are more than generous; especially the raw steak. The broth is tasty; although not the most flavorful that I have tasted. Service is usually good although can be slow if the restaurant is busy (which it is from time to time). The price of pho is in line with other pho restaurants. Would definitely recommend. THE DETAILS: One of my favorite and most frequented pho restaurants in Honolulu. The pho is not the exactly the best on the planet, or even in Chinatown for that matter, however the portions of sides for the pho, usual availability of seating, and above average pho makes this one of my favorites. I would say that the broth is good but not as tasty as To Chau or Saigon; however with a little doctoring is easily better than passable. The serving sizes are adequate and similar to other pho restaurants. The vegetables are pretty standard if you are into pho, as are the rare steak, tripe and tendon (my usual order). Where Golden River really stands out is in the amount of rare steak they offer to the customer; it is easily three times the amount of rare steak you would get at any other pho restaurant I have visited. I am usually not swayed by quantity over quality, however since the quality is not lacking in the rare steak and due to the sheer quantity of steak they provide, this becomes a noticeable benefit for this restaurant. On a typical day, seating is usually available or the wait will be short (around 5 minutes). The wait staff is courteous, although relatively quiet. The service is about average, and as in most restaurants varies depending on how busy the restaurant is. You will also pay for you check at the register whenever you are done, so you don't have to wait around for the bill. The pricing is on par with other pho restaurants as a large bowl of pho is currently $8.50. All that being said, I am always happy with my pho here; although besides the size of the sides included, it is nothing spectacular. And even if it is not as popular as some of its counterparts, Golden River Restaurant has qualities about it that makes this one of my most frequented pho restaurants in town. I eat pho about 1-2x a week or more, so when I say that this pho place is Good,I phoking mean it. This place is on the corner of China Town, the restaurant itself is pretty tight but trust me when I say the food makes up for it. I've had their rice dishes, spring rolls, and all types of phos and soups and I can honestly say this place is great. My favorite is combination pho with egg noodles or the house special. Strolled by this place with my mom today and she talked about the good old days when she used to eat here every other week. Her usual was their Seafood Noodle Soup. Nostalgia struck her and a pho craving struck me so we both decided this would be our lunch spot. We got in at ten past 11 and not a moment too soon. We got the last open table and the people who came right after us had to wait for a table for a good 20 minutes at least. The owner immediately brought us water and menus. My mom ordered her Seafood Noodle Soup without missing a beat while I perused the menu since it was my first time. I quickly decided on their House Special Noodles. The food came out steaming hot and with a heaping plate of Asian basil, bean sprouts, lemon, and jalapeno peppers in 15 minutes. The broth was nice and hot and stayed that way throughout the meal. It makes me disappointed when noodles (be it pho, ramen, or otherwise) become room temperature within a matter of minutes--totally detracts from the deliciousness. I was very happy with my order as I prefer mein (made from wheat) over fun (made from rice flour) and mine came with mein. The pork, seafood balls, etc. were delicious!! My mom's order comes with fun, which she prefers over mein xD. She told me that you can get the fun in two ways--either thick or thin. She has very traditional Asian taste so she says the thin fun is much better than the thick fun. I guess I will have to try both to see where my preference lies. When in Chinatown, my expectation for good customer service drops drastically. I know us Asians are hella rude when we don't intend to be. Golden river used to have a rude lady working there but never stopped me from coming back. I guess I'm such a regular there now, the man actually remembers my order. Years ago, I lived in So Cal and there was this Chiu Chow/Vietnamese cuisine place called Kim Fung, who served really delicious Chiu chow noodles and pan fried rice cake that I loved and when I moved to the Bay Area, I really missed this place. Every year when I visited, I would go eat there and then this place closed, i cried, a little piece of nostalgia of my childhood gone.... then years later I discovered that there was a place just like it in Hawaii! They served the same kind of food and they are just as delicious! We had the pan fried rice cake, it's called "Chinese Gau with fried Egg", #6 on the menu and the consistency of the rice cake is just like "Kim Fung", so good I want to cry. (I know those of you from the Bay Area would tell me go to Tung Kee, but folks, Tung Kee just doesn't do these Chiu Chow dishes justice!). And their House Special Noodle, #32, is excellent. My husband loved it, he ate it so fast, I didn't even get a chance to take a pic of it! According to my husband, the noodles were cooked perfectly. I got #12, which is just like #32 except it's with clear noodles (aka glass noodle in some areas). For both, the broth was amazing and the fried shrimp cake, crisp and perfect. Definitely heading back at least 1 more time before we fly back to CA. This is now on our list of go to place when we are here, right up there with Marukame. I'm so happy because now I can finally eat that one dish I've been wanting to eat for at least 15 yrs but can't because no one makes quite right and I cannot replicate it. read more

I would say this is the best value for the money in Chinatown. This is a Vietnamese/Chinese blend restaurant. Owner is of Chiu Chau Chinese heritage from Vietnam. The prices are very reasonable with options of small, medium, large portions for the Pho noodles. You can taste the natural goodness that goes into the making of the broths. You can tell the order taker if you have taste preferences ex. less salty or more sweet or chicken soup instead. They are very accommodating. The owner speaks fluent English so if any communication problems just wave him down. Any of the noodle soups are good. The Chiu Chau style seafood noodle is very popular and comes with a unique crispy fried shrimp cracker. My highest recommendation is the menu #38 for $8.50. This is the dry noodle type of dish. Crackling Crispy Spring Rolls & Charcoal BBQ pork slices topped with crushed roasted peanuts, crispy fired shallots, sauteed green onions & fresh shallots riding on top of a large bowl of smooth rice noodles. There is a cool mixture of julienne lettuce, cucumbers, and bean sprouts at the bottom of the bowl that you need to mix together with the noodles. This noodle just explodes with south asian flavors, freshness, texture, and color. The noodle comes with a sweet/tangy fish sauce for dipping or mixing. I always ask for a complementary small bowl of pork broth to moisten my mouth if things get too sticky. This is the excellent on a hot summer day. If you don't want the BBQ pork to be too burnt, let order taker know. Sometimes when they are busy, the edges get burnt. Once you visit, you wonder why you haven't visited before. Although To Chau is still my favorite for spring rolls, Golden River's Vietnamese cuisine reminds me of my mom's cooking. Food is delicious and really consistent. My favorite dishes are the house special with clear noodle (try it 'dry' with soup on the side), banh cuon (Russ M. likes this version best), and banh mi. They also have the rarely found Hainanese chicken. Spacious seating, A/C, prompt service, cleanliness, and reasonable pricing makes this place a winner. Although it's not a big establishment, they serve really good food. My wife and I take the family once a week almost like clockwork. Their prices are good, they give a good amount of food, the pho is great and not too crowded, and the local is bright and airy. I took some out of town guests here years ago, and they still reminisce about this place. Although we like their other dishes, like Bun Rieu, a reddish soup broth with crab and noodles, and their Beef Stew, and their rice porridge, and Vietnamese sandwiches, and some other traditional dishes, for our kids, we always get two orders of Pho Tai Bo Vien, Pho with beef and beef balls. With the vegetables, and the peppers, all four of us come away satisfied! read more

Great pho had the rare steak pho. Nice flavor cheap prices. Can't ask for more from a pho restaurant. Also it's across the street from my house so that's a plus :) very satisfied! read more

This place is so legit and good! Coming from san francisco btw! Ordered a rare beef pho with steak on the side and substituted the regular rice sticks with glass noodle so good! The best thing is their beef is so fresh and they gave so so so much! I had like ten pieces or more! Broth was good and the service was attentive and nice! They make their own chilli sauce !! read more

I'll be back because they have the Hu Tieu (#12 on menu) that 99 coffee shop serves. It's not as good as 99's but since 99 is closed until march. this is a good substitute read more
