The mushroom chicken was sooo salty, the orange chicken was hard and the fried rice was hard as in it wasn't cooked enough. The chowmein had no flavor. One curious feature of the westside is the lack of reasonably priced Chinese cuisine. Admittedly we're spoiled since I worked in the Alhambra / Monterey Park area for years. We'd gotten Italian fare when Alejo's was in the same strip mall, but never tried Golden Scoop. Besides, it seemed odd that a Chinese takeout would offer fried chicken. Nonetheless, after we saw the Yelp reviews, we decided to give it a try. We're glad we did! It's an affordable, quality meal at a good price! We order off their menu rather than the steam table. Their curry noodles, made of rice vermicelli and chicken, is a real treat. They offer a slightly spicy fish offering that's my son's favorite (he's an admitted Chinese food snob). We've also tried their broccoli beef, chicken fried rice, and other dishes, all good. Then there's the chicken. Marinated with flavorful (but not hot) Cajun seasoning before frying, it's one of the better fried chicken dishes I've ever had. We opted for the eight pieces for $11.95 (only $3 more than the four piece option), it's well worth the price. We do wish they had Monterey Park or Chinatown dishes like pan fried crispy chow mein or chow fun, but considering we thought there were either expensive or mediocre choices in the neighborhood, Golden Scoop is a pleasant surprise. There's Chinese fast food here, trays of orange chicken, broccoli beef, thick orange-ish noodles and fried rice, which is all serviceable, and the portions are huge, but the real attraction is the fried chicken. It's crispy, crunchy, juicy, tasty and reasonably priced. It's surprisingly difficult to get good fast food fried chicken on the Westside. There used to be a Popeye's in Santa Monica, but it sadly was converted into yet another Starbucks. No Jim Dandy, or Church's or Pioneer. Not even a Shakey's. (Btw, the answer to the question of when did Santa Monica start going downhill, is when they demolished the Shakey's, because that's when Santa Monica lost it mojos.) Sure, you can spend plenty of dollars on an excellent fried chicken dinner in the Brentwood Country Mart, but it's always great to have a faster, less expensive option on hand. Thankfully, within the past year or so a Krispy Krunchy Chicken franchise opened in this newish Chinese fast food joint in a small strip mall on the corner of Lincoln & Washington, right on the border of Venice and Marina del Rey. This is a national franchise, and it's the same one that operates in a mini mart in Alhambra that has so many fans. There isn't a spicy or hot version of the chicken, as far as I can tell, but they have a spicy dipping sauce in addition to a half dozen other sauces. You can order by the piece or in various combos. They've got biscuits, shrimp, potato wedges, mashed potatoes & gravy, rice & beans. My go-to pick is the 8 piece dark for $9.49. My favorite thing to do is get the 8 piece to go, drive a block west to Firestone Walker and pick up some of their fantastic sours or porters, and I've got my a couple meals and snacks for the next few days. read more
