Chicken fried flat iron steak and hasbrowns

I arrived at 7:30 and was promptly seated. The front of house were welcoming and friendly. I order my usual black coffee. I also ordered the Country Fried Steak with hash browns and eggs over medium. The portions were generous. The eggs were perfectly cooked and had beautiful golden yolks that flowed just right. The hash browns were crispy on the outside and were warm and tender on the inside. Do not get me wrong - the steak was very good! The gravy was top notch and breading was flavorful and had a nice texture. And the steak was super tender. But, I'm still going to quibble with descriptions and the use of the phrase "hand pounded" - it is definitely hand breaded, it may have been patted, but it was most definitely not "pounded". Again the steak was very good! But some people may be put off with the liver flavor. It was distinctive but I happen to like liver so it was no problem for me. My guess is that the steak is pre-cooked in a sous vide and held there to speed things up and keep the consistency. So it is possible that these were just started a bit early and held there. It just means that it was a little higher in iron than it would have otherwise been.

Hashbrowns are as big as the whole plate so if this is something you crave in the morning, you have to come here. Overall, most plates required salt, but they're gravy is amazing and definitely aside you should get with any order. There is with meat and without meat options. Generous portion size, long wait time

I've been to Gravy a few times now, always in the middle of the week, and it's quick and easy to get a table. This place is comfort food done right. The service has always been fast, friendly, and super attentive without feeling rushed. Everything comes out quickly, which is perfect because I am always starving when I arrive. Portions are generous, and everything I've had has been absolutely amazing. The biscuits and gravy are easily some of the best I've had. Rich, savory, and super satisfying. It's officially my new go-to spot anytime I need biscuits and gravy. Although the standout to me was the banana chocolate pancake. It was unreal! Soft, fluffy, and packed with banana baked right into the batter, giving it this warm, naturally sweet flavor in every bite. It's indulgent in the best way possible and definitely something I'd order again. This is such a laid back breakfast spot, so this just wrapped everything together. Overall, everything here is just so good, it's one of those places where you leave full, happy, and already thinking about what you're going to order next time.

One of the best breakfast I've ever had! Food was incredible on all points, the service was friendly but not the obnoxious fake type, and it's a laid back place for a quiet breakfast for someone who was barely waking up! It's obviously in the name, but the gravy was incredible and the chicken fried steak was a legit piece of steak in batter that didn't just fall apart. The home style potatoes had amazing grilled onions and were hand cut, and the Greco Style omelet was a flavor bonanza! Can't wait to go back!

It's been a fruitful two decades for Gravy, their food has been so widely acclaimed that they've become one of the most recognized brands / establishments in Portland. There is practically a wait during all hours of the day, which is a testament to their popularity and success. The consistency has paid off: they're still one of the tastiest options for breakfast and American comfort food. The place is understandably on the smaller side, with just enough seating for a handful of groups, lots of natural lighting, and an open kitchen that is buzzing throughout the day. Parking is all streetside, whether it's paid for along Mississippi, or a couple of blocks of residential parking. The neighborhood has evolved over the last couple of decades and Gravy has been a big driver to bringing relevance and gentrification to the area. Waiting is a big part of the experience unfortunately. There are no reservations or a waiting area inside, so folks (and their completed parties) should be directly outside. Don't feel like waiting? Give their takeout a spin. Call them directly (#1) but be sure to check out their latest menu online. The portions are excellent. Most plates are heavy and hearty, with the presentation on point. The hashbrowns are indeed crispy and uniquely shaped in a way where they remind me of a pancake in shredded potato form. The corned beef hash is made in house and is tasty as it is colorful. I appreciate the fluffiness of the pancakes, the heartiness of the omelets, and their monte cristo. My steak (a la steak and eggs) wasn't cooked to my liking, but I was still happy to eat it anyway. This isolated paragraph is dedicated to their biscuits and gravy, but really on the latter. It has the essence of the breakfast sausage, is perfectly creamy, and utterly indulgent to the point where I can say it's one of the best I've ever had. While the biscuit is soft, fluffy, and is respectable on its own, the gravy is absolutely what makes the dish nearly flawless. In fact, if they sold it by the bottle, I'd demand a jug. It is the kind of semi-salty gooeyness that elevates any of their breakfast plates. I want to drown it in my hashbrowns and eggs, dip my toast in it, and schlop it all up like no one is looking. (#2) Prices are in the sub $20 range for each plate. This is by no means budget friendly for anyone but there are other things to know: $2 is charged for split plates, there is no more than 2 cards per table, and an 18% gratuity is automatically added for parties of 6 or more. (#3) Kevin was an outstanding waiter. He was often behind the counter and handling multiple tables all on his own. The rest of the staff really needs to pick up the pace, since many tables sat unclaimed since they weren't cleared and cleaned quickly enough. Just getting on top of this would cut the wait times for many, and allow others to enjoy what most folks eating are already aware of. However, good patience is a virtuous thing, in which if most patrons have it, then there is always something excellent waiting beyond the Gravy doors. __________ (#1) 503-287-8800. Ate here a while ago and realized I never finished or published my review, here goes. Really enjoyed the food here, wait took about an hour though, it was a sunday around 12pm, we were seated at the bar around 12:50ish. Service inside and food was quick though! Huge portions of food, good quality and prices match the quality and quantity. My boyfriend got a hash scramble of sorts, I typically go sweeter for breakfast so I had the french toast. Portions were huge of course, we were easily able to share both and I still didn't even fully finish mine. The french toast here is made with challah bread which is definitely one of my favorites! Also I ordered the 2 piece plate but if they're small they said they give you the extra piece anyway. Very generous. Would love to return here, just know that timing was a thing because it gets packed here very quickly, unless that has died down, but it was also a sunday anyway.

Ok, seriously, oatmeal crème brûlée??? In YOUR CHOICE of decadent flavors??? Uhhhh, yeAH! Sign me UP! While hubs enjoyed 3 strips of bacon with 2 over easy eggs and house made biscuit, I was ALL ABOUT the oat meal bowl. A HUGE serving of Bob's Red Mill oatmeal and local berries brûlée(d?) with a delicious sweet crusty dome over the mixed berries and oats. Service was friendly, efficient and executed with smiles galore. This cozy spot is comfortable and inviting and the food was delicious and plentiful. My wife and I are breakfast food fanatics. So when we came upon gravy, we had to give it a try. Since we were in a bit of a time crunch, we got our food to-go. They were super busy but took or order right away. The server was really friendly giving the place an over all local diner vibe. It only took them like 15min to make the food which was also awesome. Their food reminds me of one of those local diners I used to go to as a kid. Big portions of decent breakfast food. The scramble we got was gigantic with a huge frisbee of hash browns in top. The biscuit was butter and fluffy. Their French toast was good but there were some areas where it was undercooked. Other than that it was a solid meal.

Very small breakfast spot, it had a wait time but I can definitely see why. The food was so delicious, I've never had veggie gravy before and it blew my mind how flavorful it was! The French toast was so soft and fluffy, I definitely recommend getting one of their sweets as their pancakes also looked so good! Everyone there was so sweet and attentive. You will not leave this place hungry. Portions are HUGE! Food was totally solid. Our server was excellent - it was busy but he was so attentive consistently refilling our waters and coffee. Ambiance is nice and informal. It's a small space and is very popular so there will most likely be a line. Get there early to avoid the extra long waits!

I have gone to Gravy for the last several years for brunch and it never disappoints. The southern comfort menu, massive portions, and reasonable prices cannot be beat. The restaurant is located on the Mississippi. The whole party should be there after waitlisting before the staff will seat you. The crowning jewels they offer are definitely the corned beef hash and French toast. The corned beef chunks are large and sizable in between the pan fried onions and potatoes. It's always well seasoned and satiating. Now onto the French toast. It is made with challah bread. It's decadently dense but thick and fluffy. It's too too eggy or sweet. It can stand on its own without additional syrup. Lastly, even though it was packed, our server was on point, always checking in, refilling our tea cups, and rearranging our plates to make room. Gravy is my trusted go to!

While it's a wait on Sunday, this was some of the best brunch I've had. I had their Monte Cristo with House Potatoes, which was a huge portion of food determined to leave you full while having plenty of leftovers. Their coffee blend is tasty, the French toast was irresitable and the service was very nice! It is also some of the most affordable brunch you'll find in Portland. Very delicious food ina smaller resturant. Sometimes there is a wait but they move through pretty quick. I got the country fried steak this time and it was a full piece of 8oz steak not soft hamburger like most places. Was very good. read more

*Breakfast Review* Gravy serves a great breakfast, even when compared to the other titans in a town that capitalizes the word and adds a trademark -- Portland Breakfast™. The portions are massive! As my good friend Reed C. says, "You don't ever get two (portions) at Gravy." The half order of french toast is substantial, the biscuit (singular) and gravy needs no pluralization and the omelette is omeLARGE and filled with ingredients. Portion size is one thing, but taste is another...and Gravy delivers. The french toast, made with Challah bread, is moist, thick and slightly sweet - even before the addition of maple syrup. The biscuits are moist and flaky and provide a wonderful vehicle for the transportation of the savory sausage gravy to your mouth. Egg dishes allow a choice of scramble or omelette and come in predetermined or make-your-own varieties of meaty, veggie and or cheesy goodness. They are good enough to not need hot sauce, but the smoky, slow burn of the house sauce is a wonderful accompaniment. The service is above average and attentive, despite the crowd that overruns the place on weekends. Make sure to get there before 8:30 or risk a long wait (the restaurant opens at 7:30). read more

Yum yum yum, nom nom nom. Sometimes I wish I could leave audio reviews in the orgasmic sounds that certain restraunt foods leave me with. I have only been here twice and they make great quality food at affordable prices, they are fast in bringing the food out, and the staff are really nice. Will definitely keep returning. Gravy is my favorite BIG BREAKFAST spot in Portland, and everyone knows I'm a glutton. I like going here on Monday mornings (I NEVER go here on weekends), sitting at the counter, and watching the crew sling frying pans across the room while they rock out to whatever the music of the day is. My favorite breakfast here is the Romeo scramble (house made Italian sausage, pepper, and provolone cheese) with crispy hash browns. These scrambles and omelets are not for small eaters. I would estimate they have 5-7 eggs tossed around in cheesy goodness with the aforementioned ingredients. If the sausage is too heavy for you, try the Desario scramble, a simple scramble of eggs and carmelized onions, with a dusting of red chili... and order a side of crispy bacon as a cherry on top. Chef-proprietor Mark Greco even makes his own outstanding salsa to accompany your gigantic, mouth-watering brunch of choice. I just wish he'd bring back the verde I miss so much! The corned beef hash is top notch as well, and a mountain of food, to say the least. I have a hard time not ordering a half-side of the french toast on Challah bread along with my already too big meal every time I step into this restaurant. Because I'm a pig, I always finish my gigantic plates here, and I don't need to eat for the rest of the day. I am still asking for a Gravy Glutton's Hall of Fame photo board on the wall of the restaurant! Make it happen, Gravy! read more

Our breakfast was amazing! I had their breakfast carnitas and they were phenomenal. Coming from a traditional Hispanic family I can say that they taste pretty darn similar to what my family makes, very impressed! I was surprised to see that the portions were astronomical. We planned to save our left overs for lunch. The hash browns were okay but the service was phenomenal. Over all such a great experience! Highly recommend! read more

Waited over an hour for barely mediocre food. Our waiter was ok, biscuits were dry, the breakfast Sammy was so oily we had to use napkins to pay it down, my yogurt parfait literally had a 1/2 cup of honey topped with sweet yogurt and a handful of almonds. We decided to go here for brunch last Saturday after bailing on a game we were playing. It was a total random choice based on yelp reviews. It didn't disappoint. First, kudos to the woman handling the waitlist. She was on it and kept things moving. If you missed your name the first time, she didn't remove you from the list but tried a few more times. Like others have stated, the potions are huge. I had the Monte Crisco. It had a big slice of real turkey on it. Sadly, my poached eggs were overcooked and tasted like vinager (too much vinegar in the poaching water). The waitress offered to have them remade but I had more than enough food without them! My son ordered a buscuit and gravy on the side. The biscuit was almost the size of the plate and the gravy was delicious! He had sunnyside up eggs that were perfect with the country fried steak. My daughter had the Blueberry Pancakes, another winner. Our friend also had country fried steak with sunnyside up eggs. Again, perfect. The potions of hash browns with our entrees were big, crispy and very tasty! We all left with leftover boxes for another meal. We will definitely be back. Well worth any wait. read more

Portions are large! My husband got the Monte Cristo and loved - you don't see it on menus often. I got Chile Verde - so flavorful!Hashbrowns nice and crispy. We also got a side of French toast with berry compote that was also delicious. We took food home and basically had another meal. Will definitely go back! read more

I had been to this place one day and waited for nearly 1 hour and ate elsewhere as we couldnt get a spot. Finally got to try this on a different weekend. This place gets very crowded and the minimum wait time is atleast 30 minutes for brunch on a weekend. Tried the Egg scramble with Spinach/Sundried tomatoes, French toast, pan-fried hashbrowns and the fried egg sandwich with peppers. The hashbrowns were awesome as it was crunchy but its also pretty greasy. The sandwich was also pretty greasy but tasted good :) the French toast was very different and awesome and i have never had something like that elsewhere. The scramble was just okay and nothing special. Would definitely try this place again but need to go early on a weekend i guess to beat the crowd. read more

So, I am all about biscuits and gravy, tried it at so many different restaurants and none have ever really stood out as being "the best" until today. The biscuits and gravy were amazing (especially the gravy, which makes sense as the place is aptly named Gravy) seriously the very best B&G ever!! In addition, the French toast was probably the tastiest I've ever had, and the pieces were huge!! Well worth the hour long wait!! Highly recommend!! read more

We arrived at the Restaurant around 10:30 am and immediately we put our name on the list. After 15 minutes, the hostess came out and with an awful attitude told us: " Just to you know, I wont be able to fit you guys in one table since you are 12, so you will have to sit half and half" which we agreed because we knew we were to many. We spent literally 1 hour and 15 minutes waiting outside. They kept calling people that came after us. I ended up leaving. I heard the food is really good but I am not planning to find out. When I visit again, I am definitely coming back. I ordered the country fried steak with 2 eggs over medium. The country fried steak was decent, a little tougher than I would have preferred, but staring at my friend's Dalise omelet, oh man i was drooling and looking forward to next time. The gravy was good, and the sauce that came on the side was great as well. Not too spicy, and not too overpowering, subtle but tasty, and also cold. I like cold sauces with my hot food :). It was pouring outside, but while you wait to be seated, there are a lot of things you can do in the area. read more

Perhaps not the place I should have headed, considering I don't like gravy (I know, blasphemy). My partner said the biscuits and gravy were lovely. I had french toast was still very good, in addition to oatmeal, which was likewise yummy. The oatmeal had a unique caramelized glaze and was full of berries, so def. a step up from regular oatmeal. It was way larger than anticipated! read more

The servings are so big it left me feeling like a glutton after eating here. But with that in mind, I would recommend splitting whatever you order. I LOVED how there were tons of meat substitutes. Great place for vegans or vegetarians! Expect to wait a very long time (hour+) for Sunday breakfast/brunch. read more

A very Portland place for breakfast. Service was quick and warm, atmosphere is very solid and a little funky-good balance. Had the oatmeal brûlée which was both enormous and delicious. Friends chili verde was also great. Mississippi has really grown up over the past few years and it's great to see so many awesome joints like this one opening up. Awesome food. Everything we got was great and full of flavor. Went on a Saturday morning and waited 45 minutes for a table. Wasn't bad since there's a coffee house just close. We went and grabbed coffee while we waited. Service was great and friendly. Price was good. Would come back. read more

Excellent breakfast spot in town. We've been about 3 or 4 times now and it never disappoints. Huge portions, no way to finish your meal! Each breakfast is about two servings. I've tried their omelettes and skillets and this last time I had the sweet potato buckwheat pancakes. They were delicious!! The flavor is so perfect I don't put on any butter or syrup, I just eat as is. My husband had their French toast and said it was one of the best he has ever had. The service is top notch too. We've taken out of town guests here and they also rave about it. I give 4 stars instead of a 5 because the coffee is pretty blah. read more

Let's start with this: 100% worth the wait. The place is incredibly small yet so personal. It's bustling activity and environment creates this feel of being at home at a huge family reunion surrounded by extended relatives. I came here during my recent trip to Portland. The staff was very friendly and vocal about their recommendations. Refills of coffee, a central trait of a true diner (don't let anyone tell you different). I ended with the decision of corned beef and hash, it was scrumptious. Well seasoned and a perfect ratio of ingredients. Definitely worth waiting in the rain for this place, and highly recommended for any local or someone in town. read more

We have eaten here a zillion times. Some friends of ours from the Bay Area always insist that we go there when they're in town. This last visit wasn't my favorite. There were six of us, and knowing that it's hard to seat that many people during breakfast time, we had planned on the wait. But, what happened, was that the hostess wasn't able to manage the room very well, and after over an hour, we were sat at a four top with extra chairs in the corner. If we had put down there were four, we would have eaten at least 20 minutes sooner. Otherwise, the food is ridiculously over portioned, we have learned to split our meals, being able to sample a larger variety of food from the menu. I have only eaten lunch here once, and was very surprised. The selection is pretty decent, and of course, it's not nearly as crowded as the weekend breakfast/brunch crowd. read more

A nice, slim figure can be nice but have you ever tried veggie gravy?! It makes you feel good about eating pure fat because it's mixed with greens! Bravo Gravy! I went in and sat down at the bar, which had purse hooks. And a place to hang your jackets. The staff was super friendly. I ordered the salmon hash with poached eggs and kale. I am a salmon breakfast fanatic and this was top notch. My server brought it out with this spicy chili sauce. Like a better, more hipster version of Sriracha. What would I know about this place if I didn't try the gravy? So I ordered a biscuit with veggie gravy and it was the best, most fattening decision I've ever made. Don't skip out on the name of the restaurant and you will leave fat n happy. read more

HUGE portions! I got one biscuit w/vege gravy, side of hash browns and a fried egg and I only ate half of the first two! The hash brown are about 1.5" thick and 6" in diameter! wow! Be prepared to wait FOREVER for your food. I've been coming here for years and the service is always the same, long waits to be seated, long waits to order, long waits to eat. I agree with most of the reviewers ... to a point. I think giving portions at restaurants that are enough to feed an army is wrong (contributes to me - and most every other american - to being over weight) - except at this place. Don't mess with my Gravy or I'll cut you! I've not had the Brulee - it's on my hit list - but I need to shoot up on some insulin first I think?? Everything I have had here is first rate comfort food I love the food, don't mind the wait. I love taking friends there for their first time, and I love taking something home to remind me I have go go back there when I eat the leftovers the next day! Enjoy! read more

Never been disappointed. Though the wait is sometimes long, but that's a catch-22. The food has never disappointed at all. And the times weren't too bad/tideous. If anything you can walk around the neighborhood while you wait :) Service is two thumbs up Food Quality is two thumbs up $$ is not too bad so I'll still give it two thumbs up Ambience is great. I don't understand how the ratings aren't higher... because this is the best brunch I've ever had. While the whole table loved their food I'm going to write specifically from an allergy/vegan perspective since there are hundreds of reviews already. Brunch is my FAVORITE! But after learning I am allergic to gluten, egg and dairy... well, F my life because brunch is practically out the window. I've had tofu scrambles before and always appreciate when restaurants offer this alternative, but usually there just a few haphazard cubes of tofu mixed with some veggies. Meh. Gravy is unique because not only do they let you choose tofu over eggs for any of their scrambles, but they magically made a plate of food that most closely resembled the consistency and body of an egg scramble I've ever had. It was flavorful, and hearty and so delicious. Most breakfast menus can all offer the same things, but Gravy nailed each component in the way you want them to be executed. Has browns were fluffy and so crispy on the outside they resembled potato match sticks. The portions were massive. Their hot sauces made in house - insane. I honestly considered not writing a review of my favorite breakfast place in Portland because the wait to get in is already long enough but if I'm being honest it's always worth the wait and sharing is caring right? I have eaten at gravy so many times my stomach is grumbling just thinking about having the monte cristo. I love the biscuits and sausage gravy or the chicken fried steak but let me assure you I have sampled almost everything on the menu and haven't been disappointed. My favorite thing about this place? The portion size. My dad is 260+ pounds and he loves breakfast and this is the only place in Portland I can bring him where he doesn't look at the plate like it needs to get bigger. I always order the same thing but have had bites of everything my friends get (I've brought a lot of people here) and it's always been good. This is not a gourmet place and you shouldn't be expecting fine dining best food of your life but it is my favorite spot because it's always tasty, filling, and dependable. So it was a good value for a special occasion. I'll walk you through what we ate: First came their signature green olives with a little bowl for the pits. They had some little pickled red onions in with them. Soooo good! Then focaccia. It was a big hunk that we tore pieces off of and dipped in garlic olive oil. Those were standard with every meal. Now came the fun. The thing I love about tasting menus is you never know what's coming next! It's so much fun to be surprised! They started us off with a seasonal burrata with local strawberries, hazelnuts, fresh basil and a strawberry gastrique. Swoon-worthy! Next we were served the house version of Caesar salad. It came with a wedge of lemon to squeeze over the top. Yum! Next was the thinnest roasted asparagus I've ever eaten. I don't normally like asparagus but I really enjoyed this. It rested on a bed of some sort of puree (I forgot what they said it was). Next was corn ravioli. Sadly it was the only pasta included in this meal. I had been hoping to have another pasta dish or two. The ravioli was special though and not your normal filling, so that was nice. Then came roasted cauliflower on a bed of green goddess sauce. Tasty but I was feeling very healthy by then with all the veggies! (Couldn't they have replaced that with pasta? Sorry, I'm whining here). Our last savory dish was eggplant parm. It came with more focaccia. Again, I'd have loved pasta instead. Isn't that what one goes to an Italian restaurant for? Finally there were delicious, short, buttery Italian wedding cookies. But then our waiter surprised us with cannoli, for our anniversary! It sat atop Maryhill peach compote. Excellent! The service was impeccable. Our waiter was knowledgeable, personable and very attentive. We were also served by some other staff who did a great job as well. Good thing we've been married 42 years. If this was a first date where you want to get to know each other, it would be hard because it's pretty loud and the tables are crammed closely together. They really need a bigger space. We are looking forward to bringing friends and family here in the future.

To all who are thinking of dining here and want to be treated fairly. They exhibited Unfair business practice towards us as their customers. 5 adults and a 3 year old ate here Friday afternoon, 1/27, about 3 pm. The food was good but our server was mediocre. it wasn't busy so there was no excuse for not providing us good service. We decided a 10% tip was more than fair. Normally if service is good we give a 20% tip. With us were 2 fine dining restaurant servers who had 30 years experience between them working at 1 star up to 5 star restaurants. When the server gave us the bill with an 18% automatic gratuity due to a group of 6 diners We went from having a good experience here to walking out thinking the ownership is greedy and unfair. Not to mention is it is ILLEGAL to force customers to pay an autogratuity as a tip. If it is called a service fee it can't be considered a tip, but must be part of the wage paid to the server. We have reported this establishment to the Better Business Bureau and the State Attorney General's Office for illegal, unfair business practice. A 2014 rule change by the Internal Revenue Service has created a significant incentive for employers to stop imposing mandatory service charges, if the employer hands any of that money over to employees. . Any portion of a mandatory service charge paid to employees must be treated as wages, not tips. This means the employer must withhold and pay Social Security and Medicare (FICA) tax on these amounts, may not claim a credit against its tax obligations for these amounts (as it can for tips), and must include them as part of the employee's hourly wage when determining overtime payments, among other things. The rule applies only to mandatory service charges. For the amount to count as a tip rather than a service charge, all of the following must be true: The payment must be entirely voluntary The customer must have the unrestricted right to determine the amount The amount cannot be set by employer policy or subject to negotiation with the employer. The customer must have the right to determine who receives the payment. There is no place for this greedy establishment in Portland. If you go there with 6 or more and they give you a bill with an 18% autogratuity, pay only the food charges and walk. The law is on your side. We gave Gravy a chance to respond for over a week, and refund some of our forced tip, but they apparently think they are in the right and did not respond.... read more

They say doing something over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of crazy...Call me crazy...I keep returning to Gravy hoping for a good meal and friendly service but it never happens. Part of my want for this to be something that it isn't is the shear location ( its within walking distance of my apartment)... I walked down today at about 8am (trying to beat the hipster crowds that start infesting the place around 9 and 10am). There were quite a few tables available when we walked in and we asked if we could have a four-top near the window as I am one of those angst-riddled people that don't like being seated in the middle of the room, I prefer the perimeter where you are less overtaken by noise and crowds. The host rudely said "no, those tables have to stay open for bigger parties"...Ok, try and let it go... Then not more than 5 minutes had passed and a couple (2 people) were sat at a four-top right next to us!!! That should have been my queue to leave but I didn't. My friend and I both ordered breakfasts with hash browns...She had the roast beef hash and I had biscuits and gravy with a side of hash browns. Both of our meals were sitting in a pool of oil...Her roast beef hash was brown and unidentifiable like Chinese food. My biscuit was very dry and the gravy was nothing special. I think this place had its hay-day 10 years ago when there wasn't as much competition but it seriously lacks in taste and service. As for my laziness in wanting a close breakfast spot that meets my expectations...I will just have to wait...Portland is popping up new places weekly. read more

The wait times for breakfast/brunch at this establishment can be discouraging to the uninitiated customer, but trust me...it's well worth the wait. I remember the first time I went there I had ordered a breakfast burrito with an additional "small" stack of pancakes on the side. Believe me, there is NOTHING small about the portions on the menu, even sides. By the end of crossing the rubicon of flapjacks, eggs, potatos, and other goodies my selection had bestowed, I felt like I had to run a Tough Mudder course just to feel as if I had never entered the restaurant at all that day. Don't get me started on what my other family members had ordered either...think of our table that day as the candy meadow scene in Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory; a full smorgasboard of eggs, hashbrowns, biscuits and gravy. To be honest, I am starting to feel out of breath just thinking about it. And of course it all tastes delicious. There was not a moment in any of the times I've attended Gravy where I thought the food was suspiciously cold or undercooked, or that plate x had too many spices on the y portion; everything was PERFECT foodwise. The coffee and juices are nothing too much to brag about on their own, but when paired with what's on the plate, they're totally forgivable. Since I've never actually tried the strictly lunch menu, I can't give this restaurant a five. In addition to fantastic service however, I'd say the bang for your buck on the food at Gravy is totally worth it. I would be completely comfortable with this restaurant being the last brunch place I could eat for the rest of my life. read more

First, there's the wait. Like other brunch joints in PDX, it is not short. I think we waited about 90 minutes for a table. But in this town, waiting a while for Sunday brunch is a staple. It's part of our identity, not unlike beer and bicycles and vegan strippers. But the bespectacled, be-skinny-jeaned, be-plaid-shirted host was kind of a turd and got pissy when I told him that we must not have heard him call our name 10 minutes ago, even though we were standing right outside the front door and heard everyone else's name just fine. Oh well, we got our table a few minutes later and our waitress was awesome! Sweet, funny, patient and charming. Never had to ask for more coffee or water. Yeah, she was that good. I had the fried chicken with an egg and veggie gravy. (Full disclosure: veggie gravy is for old ladies with heart conditions. I substituted for sausage gravy and to Gravy's credit, they did not skimp on the sausage.) It was good, not great. The chicken was a bit tough and the food was just a few steps above bland. Luckily, their house-made hot-sauce was on hand to lend some spice to the proceedings. I was also able to sample the salmon hash, which was out of this freakin' world. Smokey and loaded with salmon. I don't think I'd put it above, or even on par with, the salmon scramble at Kenny & Zukes, but it's approaching contender-status. Overall, if I could give it 3.5 stars, I would. They might have even gotten 4 stars, if not for the douchey hipster-host. read more

This morning, my family had a very filling and delicious breakfast at Gravy, and overall, it was a solid experience. The food was fantastic, and we left completely satisfied. I went with the biscuits and gravy, and I have to say, it did not disappoint. The biscuits were soft, flaky, and perfect for soaking up the rich, flavorful gravy. I usually like my gravy a little less sweet and more savory. I also got the crispy hash browns with a fried egg on top, which were perfectly cooked--crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, just as they should be. My wife had the Bacato scramble, which she enjoyed but mentioned that it had a little too much bacon. She said the bacon flavor was so strong that it overpowered the other ingredients, which, for her, was a bit of a downside. The restaurant wasn't very busy when we arrived, but it quickly filled up, and that's when things got a bit hectic. Our service was average--nothing exceptional, but not bad either. We could tell the waitress and the one other server were really doing their best to keep up with the rush, and they were both working hard. It felt a little understaffed, which was understandable given the growing crowd. Overall, we had a great time at Gravy. The food was flavorful and satisfying, and while the service could have been a bit more attentive, we know they were doing their best. We'll definitely be back for another hearty breakfast soon! read more

The WORST breakfast ever. I ordered the roast beef hash. When it arrived I thought I had been transported to a Chinese Restaurant because the plate that was put down before me looked like Mu Shu Pork. Everything had a brown cast to it and it was shredded. The beef was practically nonexistent and the few pieces I found were fatty. Instead of using cubed home fries to make the hash they used shredded potatoes. There was about an inch of reddish oil at the bottom of the dish. The entire dish was so oily and gross that the only thing I could eat was a little bit of the scrambled eggs that were not touching the oil. Our waiter was not very observant. We had to ask for refills on coffee and water. Had the waiter took the time to ask how our food was tasting, I would have told him that the entire dish was way too greasy and sent it back. Not sure why this restaurant keeps making the same mistakes. Upon reading other reviews it seems that this is an ongoing problem with the cooks using too much oil. There are many other great breakfast places in Portland to go to and not waste my time or money on this pretentious place, where all the waiters wear plaid shirts, skinny jeans and beards. read more

This place is pretty decent. I feel like you are either going to love it, or walk out thinking, "Meh". I fell more towards the "Meh" side, but I wouldn't let that deter you from eating here by any means. I feel like a place named "Gravy" should pride itself on its namesake item, but the gravy was just your plain, run-of-the-mill, ho-hum, basic gravy. I have had far better country gravys in mom and pop diners and road side greasy spoons NOT in the heart of what everyone considers a foodie mecca. (Ichabod's in Scappoose - Coleman's outside of Banks) The portions are huge (I often think of the line in Idiocracy, "How about an order of EXTRA BIG-AZZ FRIES!!!!") when I eat here and that alone keeps me coming back. If you are looking for some sort of culinary experience that will blow your mind, maybe it will, maybe it won't. If you just want to sit down and have a pretty decent meal and take your leftovers home in a wheelbarrow, this is your place. read more

I spent my Christmas in Portland and on Boxing Day I and my son call in an order of two breakfast sandwiches. I sent to pick up the order he was ignored by everyone there but the insult to injury was when an smug waiter pushes he way in front of me as if me very existence was the most irritating moment of his day. I never received a acknowledgment or a "I'll be with you in a nonentity" no I just say there for twenty minutes. There two sandwiches were greasy and after their second bite( you know that moment you stomach is passed starvation) it was clear that is just tasteless. What a mess. I am giving two star because the gal that did finally help me was polite. In short your staff needs to get over themselves and realize that they are in guest services read more

Although I'm sure the lunch offerings are swell, breakfast is the main affair. Plan to wait. And wait. And if there are four or more of you, wait some more. The food is still worth it. Breakfast meals here are huge and very reasonably priced. Challah Bread French Toast is sweet, chewy and delicious. The "3" egg scrambles must have 6 eggs in them. The hashbrowns are perfectly crisped on the outside. Only 4 stars? Yeah. Well, there's the wait, weekends expect an hour, and the service is either spot on or a tad off. There are two really hard workers, the woman with short blond hair and the blonde with the ponytail(Jessica?). If one of them waits on you, bump it up to 4.5 stars. read more

The food here is AMAZING. I love the delice omelette slathered in gravy. My husband prefers the brocato as does my roommate. Great brunch style restaurant, super popular and I recommend it to EVERYONE. I have no problem driving from Vancouver to get some food. They also have good cocktails and some "breakfast cocktails" if you need the hair of the dog or a nice kick start. I would recommend getting there before they open if you have a larger party as it is a hot spot and the wait can last upto 20-30 mins mid day. Even then it's worth the wait!!! The staff is also super chill and the atmosphere is rad. 100% recommend if you choose somewhere else you are seriously missing out. read more

This was a nice restaurant with good sized portions and yummy omelets. The thing that I didnt like was the snappish tone the waitress had and the ridiculously long wait, does it really take that long to make an omelet and pancakes?Really people this is american breakfast food not ethnic food. It took 45 minutes for our food to come out. I was dining there with my family and the women hardly gave my dad a chance to speak. Also the most annoying part of our visit was that we were the only colored people there on a Sunday morning. It was filled with white hipsters. If you like waiting a long time for your food and huge portions then this is the place for you. read more

I'll start of with saying the food was fantastic, LARGE portions, and highly recommend it! I would give a higher rating if it wasn't for the negligence of the wait list sign up sheet. We went knowing we would wait at least an hour, just like many other breakfast establishments, but after 1h45 mins we were being skipped over repeatedly by parties with their names after mine. I addressed the gentleman right as he called for another name after mine and asked why we're being blatantly skipped, wasn't given an answer but simply given a table and no apology. The service was prompt and friendly, but more attention needs to paid to the wait list. read more

Great sunday brunch, the wait for a table for 2 was less than 15 minutes, we had the monte cristo, and chicken fried steak. An will return and recommend to friends. Portions are very large but they only charge 2 bucks to split, well worth it, and the food came out quickly considering the place was full and on a 20 minute wait. Waitress never stopped back to see how the food was, but when its that good I think she assumed the best. I did run out of juice but the coffee was bottomless and quickly refreshed. All in all a great experience! Value in amount of food for what you pay, and a great dining environment, though a little chilly. read more

This place is terrible. The wait is long, not because it is full but because they are perennially understaffed and wont seat you at open tables. After we wait for an hour and a half we had thoroughly perused the menu by the time we were finally seated. I asked if we could order right away. My request was denied. This place is one of the reasons Portland has a reputation of bad service. Also, huge quantities does not equal good food. They gravy was mediocre at best and it is supposed to be their specialty. I'm really disappointed with our experience at a restaurant we've visited regularly. Despite being there on time, we were seated after other guests who had added their names ahead of ours on the list. When I tried to discuss this with the manager, Misty, she was incredibly rude and accused us of lying about the situation. Her unprofessional attitude only added to the frustration. The seating system is clearly disorganized and needs improvement. This experience was a far cry from the service we've come to expect. read more

By far my new favorite breakfast place. Maybe a tid but more expensive than I'd like (10-12$ each for breakfast) but well worth it. Literally everything I've ever had here has been amazing! Their blueberry and pecan pancakes are to die for, their coffee is fresh and delicious, and their ruban is THE BEST IN TOWN. The one and only drawback: their waitresses are old and crabby and not very nice at all, but whateves, the food makes up for it ten times over! read more

Gravy offered tasty food and large portions. I visited the restaurant while staying with family in the Portland area. It was busy, which made the service quite slow and our server's attitude seemed quite indifferent. Having said that, the service wasn't so bad as to completely turn me off and the quality of the food mostly made up for it. read more

Just got back into town and had to hit this place up. Heard it was the best spot in the area. Suspect. Although it was very busy, service was prompt, coffee was keep full. The omelet was the size of my head and the pan fried hash browns, seriously the best Ive had. Great breakfast spot, the hipe is right. read more
