Tahoe Truckee is one of the hardest places to find a good restaurant, but Great Gold has made it on my list! Located in the industrial area of Truckee, Great Gold is tucked in a quiet row of businesses. The outdoor covered patio which you see first, is right of the entrance where a large indoor room faces the kitchen and a giant tiled dome pizza oven. What is striking for me first of all is the quality of the staff. Every time I have eaten here, the servers have been kind, courteous, knowledgeable, and they provide the best experience from beginning to end. I suspect the reason for the quality staff is due to the owner's attention in providing healthcare via the extra surcharge at the end of the bill. Of course the food matches the service. The prize goes to their pizza. The crust is the most important base to any pizza. If you screw that up, then everything else is a waste of time. Part of this great gold crust has to be the great oven. At the same time, the ingredients on top of the pizza are unique. Each time, there is a new pizza to try as well as their popular pizzas. I also have ordered the meatballs twice, once with the meatballs dropped into the red sauce and the other time the red sauce separate. I would suggest the red sauce on the side, since this prevents the meatballs from totally drowning and loosing their own flavor. The fritto misto was light and crunchy with a green sauce on the side, very delicate and exciting to eat. From food to service, Great Gold has made a star on my map in the Tahoe Truckee area. read more

Phenomenal food, impeccable service, humble setting. Cannot recommended more if you're looking for a top tier Italian resteraunt in the area. The best pizza I have had outside of Tuscany. From the outside, nestled next to other Truckee classics, it doesn't look like much. But the owner and his wife have genuinely put to shame any other Italian restaurant in 150 miles. I have gone there several times, and going in for takeout just the other day, I did not even have to say my name, the owner recognized me and my name, and brought me my food. Wow - all star Italian spot in Truckee. Did a huge group order here on a weekend night and Great Gold came thru. -Order was prepared as requested and on time. Hard to do for a 15 person order -Food was extremely delicious. We ordered every type of pizza, a lot of salads, and a lot of sides (shout out broccolini and brussell sprouts). The pizza was so tasty and well cooked. The sides were flavorful, rich and delicious -Great Gold is a little on the expensive side but it is worth it. Came here for a post ski feast with friends, and left satisfied. You know they are serious when you see the build in traditional pizza oven. It's more of a Neil Politan style with thin crust and flavorful topping. We enjoy the mushroom pizza a lot, as well as the duck ragu pasta. The only thing we probably won't get again is the branzino, a bit over priced and the flavor was just a so so. Tiramisu, and Affogato were nice completions to the meal. Overall was happy to find a such great Italian flavors in a small town. They did add 6% charge to cover employees health benefits, which I guess was common in California these days. read more

My friends and I decided to organize a girls trip to Tahoe. No girls trip is complete without yummy food, so we looked for some restaurants on Yelp that had decent reviews. From the reviews we decided on this place. From the outside (honestly) it kind of looked like a diner to me, but once inside the beautiful decor and design really took me by surprise. It's really beautiful inside and the ambiance was lovely. We noticed a party of four already seated inside of the pretty dining room, with about 3 people seated at the bar. The rest of the restaurant was empty, we felt good about arriving at a good time and avoiding any crowds. It was about 6:20pm. Once we got there, my friends and I stood in the entrance of the restaurant, just talking amongst ourselves until we were assisted. We noticed it took a while to get help from the hostess, who walked past us a couple of times before acknowledging us. The hostess asked if we needed any help. We told her we'd like to have a table for four. She asked if we had a reservation, we told her we didn't. She then Informed us that their restaurant is a reservation only establishment, because they are really busy. We then asked if she had room for any walk-ins, she said "unfortunately we don't". As we were talking, a tall white haired, Caucasian man interrupted us and apologized for the disruption. He was listening to our conversation and explained to the pretty hostess that he has a 6:30pm reservation for four, but his friends are stuck on the train and wouldn't be arriving to town for another 30 minutes. He asked the hostess if she could give his reservation to us, since we also are a party of four. What a pleasant surprise we thought, as we all looked back at the hostess for an answer! She seemed a little caught off guard as she reluctantly agreed to give us his table. But before seating us, she asked the nice man when he and his party could come back to the restaurant that night. The two bounced a few times back and forth with each other and finally decided he and his party would come back that night at 7:30pm. The hostess guaranteed the nice man she would have a table ready for him and his group. (I thought they were really busy?) After the nice man left, the hostess took us outside and showed us to a table we decided we didn't want. We asked her if we could sit inside the restaurant since it's pretty empty inside, other than the one party at a table and 3 folks at the bar. She hesitated, then took us inside to one of the many empty tables. We thanked her and settled into the menu. The food was amazing! So good, from start to finish, every dish we ordered we loved! My favorites was the toasty focaccia bread with olive oil/balsamic vinegar to start, along with the kale Caesar salad. The lasagna was to die for! Like I would literally go everyday just for the lasagna! Seriously good. We also ordered the butternut squash, raviolis, and a couple of other dishes as well as one of their seasonal pizzas. The pizza left us underwhelmed but all of the other dishes were really good. Our bill for the 4 of us came to about $300. That was with no wine/cocktails nor desserts, just food and water. I felt like it was a little steep but whatever, the food was great! After laughing amongst ourselves at the still pretty empty restaurant, we decided to ask the hostess when does the busy "reservation only" period starts! She seemed uncomfortable with the questioning, but explained how surprised she was that they weren't busier tonight. We reminded her that she told us they were fully booked and was reservation only tonight. If it wasn't for that lottery ticket man who walked up behind us and gave us his reservation we wouldn't have been able to dine there that night. She laughed uncomfortably and made up some random story about, walk-ins, Covid, short staffed, and something else I couldn't hear over my crunching of the last bits of pizza. We felt like we were being discriminated against by this hostess. But we decided not to let it bother us. The bartender (black lady) randomly came up to us and said something really nice to one of the lady's in our group. The food was delicious and we were thankful for the nice stranger that gave us his table after ease dropping on the hostess selling us the bogus 'reservation only/really busy' storyline. We decided the ill feelings we got from the hostess was not a clear representation of Tahoe or maybe even this restaurant as a whole. So we were looking forward to visiting more places and discovering other great restaurants. In my opinion your experience at this restaurant may depend on what you look like but outside of that, the chef is amazing! Order the lasagna! read more

I want to give them a one star; only to keep this place to myself. Another local friend suggested here because getting into the other fine Italian dining area is impossible even after Labor Day. I live approximately 1/4 mile from it and tonight was my first experience. Not my last! Exceptional service. The outside doesn't do justice to the interior. Yes...but... Wonderful food. Can't say enough about this gem of a place in Truckee. Lively yet relaxed vibe. Could be a date night, or girls night, or even family dinner like we enjoyed. The pastas are outstanding! But...we had a strange service incident that I hope it is just a fluke. I tried contacting the restaurant a few times to no response. We had a super friendly server. All was good. But she told us something I've never heard in a restaurant anywhere before. She said we had to place our entire order upfront and "wouldn't be able to order more." My husband and I were like, , what? Even though it was busy, food came quickly and was delicious. We have an easily bored 9 year old so that was perfect! However, I ordered a second glass of wine to have with my remaining pasta and it took a while to come. So I waited to finish while my husband and son cleaned their plates. When the wine finally came, I didn't want them to have to wait for me (see easily bored 9 year old) so we asked to see dessert menus to look at choices while I finished up. We asked her a few times . The server told us she would bring it when I was finished with my meal . Again....What?! We pressed her on this until clearly not happy about it, she brought us the dessert menus. We thought this was totally odd to pace us as customers. She came back and said something about it being a policy not to place dessert orders until everyone was done eating - or something like that. But we just wanted to see the menu! Also, not sure why that even matters? This made our experience really awkward and we didn't feel good about it. We hope to give it another try as everyone has bad days and the foils was great. We just hope this isn't their usual. . I trued to follow up with the restaurant a few times via email to share this feedback privately but got no response. Super thankful to the Great Gold team for accommodating our large party on a weekend! My friends had come here the week before and raved about this place, so we absolutely had to go back with the bigger group. Overall I thought it was a very good option for the Truckee area. Fritto Misto - super tasty fried seafood, this was amazing! Was just the right mix of lightly fried + retained the juiciness and tenderness of the plump calamari, shrimp, and oysters Cacio e Pepe - I personally loved this, but the group thought it was a tad bit salty Clam Linguine - this was one of the dishes that my group had raved about from their past visit. I thought it was tasty, but they might have over-hyped it. Worth a try if you like lighter sauces and clams in your pasta, think they could have served it a little bit warmer as well Pizza Bianca - this was done beautifully and quite tasty! Probably not on the tier of Cotogna or Delfina's pizza, but again, delicious nonetheless We also got a chance to try both the Tiramisu (solid) and the Tuscan Sundae (i love a good ice cream with olive oil). SAVE YOUR MONEY! Eat elsewhere. Place is VERY noisy. Had to yell to talk to people at our table. Service was VERY slow. Food is WAY overpriced. We ordered almost immediately. Dinner took two hours and we didn't have desert. We had to get up to get our drinks. Dirty dishes sat on our table for 15-20min before I got someone's attention to bus our table. When we left we walked by our waitress and she didn't even say goodbye or thank you. Never checked to see how our meal was. TOO ADD INSULT TO INJURY . . . the owner adds a 6% SURCHARGE TO YOUR DINNER BILL. Same BS they try and pull in SF which I'm told is where the owner is from. They do it at the very bottom of your bill. Which means they get you to tip on that amount if you're not paying attention. I bet most don't even notice it. VERY DECEPTIVE UNACCEPTABLE BUSINESS PRACTICE AND INTENTIONALLY DONE. They try and sell it as helping cover employee expenses and benefits. That's the owners responsibility NOT OURS as consumers. SEND THE OWNER a message and don't go there until he removes this offensive surcharge. That said, based on the quality of the meal, poor service and overpriced food they probably won't be around for very long. read more

Disappointing experience while on vacation. We had a reservation for 6 people. The restaurant was busy when we got there. The food (mostly pasta and pizza) took about an hour to be served. It was a late dinner reservation, so had to spend about 30 mins with crying kids. Not ideal for sure. The server and hostess apologized at the end of the evening. They did not charge us for the 2 entrees came out about 15 mins after the rest of the dinner. But even without the delay, I felt the dinner was over priced. The entrees did not include any sides which had to be ordered separately. The sides were expensive and the serving sizes were small. The ambience was not great either. The place is loud and it's hard to have a conversation. We picked this restaurant off yelp. So have to leave this review because I think you can find better alternatives! read more

Went on a Friday with a reservation. It could've been great, but several missteps turned it into a bit of a downer. * We're not Truckee natives, and the people we were with told us about "mountain time" up here, but isn't it a bit odd when you have a line out the door while the hostess had a casual 4-minute conversation with a diner while everyone watched (and waited)? * The timing of the kitchen was off, to put it mildly. Very long wait times between courses, or for the waiter to simply acknowledge our existence. There was a very, very long wait for the (incredible) bread, and an even longer one for the mains. * They forget items in our order. Yet, they still included it on the bill despite being asked to remove it. They also forgot a pizza topping, and when notified, awkwardly balanced the topping on the already completed pizza and returned it to us approximately 60 seconds later (oh, you better believe we were charged the full $6 for it too). * Note that there is an absolutely absurd 6% "healthcare charge" for waitstaff included on all orders (I was told this used to be 5%, and for something else entirely). I live in the Bay and am used to foolishness like this, but have simply never seen something as high as 6% (note that the prices are already laughably expensive), even in the most ridiculous parts of the city. * The decor/ambiance is your pretty generic millennial bland, complete with loud and very strange music choices. * The focaccia was simply the best I've ever had. Absolutely fantastic. Easily the best thing on the menu despite it being hilariously overpriced at $10 ($10! For bread!). * The bucatini cacio e pepe we received was fine, the lasagna sadly wasn't a hit at an expensive $38 a pop, and there is an almost literal drowning of all dishes in cheese, which is great if you love cheese (as one does) but makes me question what they were trying to hide by doing so. * The bianca pizza we had was nice. The three-cheese pizza was one-note and boring, missing toppings notwithstanding. * As mentioned repeatedly, this restaurant is expensive, much more so than many great restaurants in the heart of NYC and SF, both places I've lived and that can somehow charge less. We have been here many times, and I would say the quality and service has gone down hill. It is clear the owner/chef is no longer part of the day to day operations. When we entered, with reservations and asked for a different table, we're told no, menus came with food stains, tried to order appetizers and were told we needed to order everything at the same time. How many of you have tried potato on a pizza? I did last week and I must say it was the best pizza I ever had. The golden potato pizza has simple ingredients (potatoes, ricotta, roasted garlic, herbs) and it has incredible flavor. The crust was light and amazing as well. Also ordered the beyond meat (vegan) meatballs, but did not like those very much. They give you fresh pasta to cook with it (takeout) and I liked the pasta and meatballs sauce (+ white beans), just did not like the taste of the meatballs that much. My husband loved them though. I am so happy they are a 20 minute walk away and I am looking forward to trying out more veggie pizzas! read more
