So whale watching was on the list this early am but breakfast was not, at least not yet...so yelped helped with that. Stopped and checked out the menu for this joint in New Port Beach. Saw a dish, figured I'd give it a try. Delicious omelette. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great customer service and great atmosphere for a nice early am Mexican breakfast.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Thank you Great Mex!!!!

Everything was amazing. Delicious from the home made beans the perfectly made ric. Great combination dishes. From the asada hard shell taco and red asada enchiladas with a pork tamale with green sauce. What got me was the pastor nachos, it was by far the best meat I have ever tasted. I highly recommend this place. And the food came out fast. This restaurant knows what they are doing. I can't wait to go back.

I think this is officially becoming my favorite fast casual Mexican food spot in OC. I ordered on Door Dash this past week and got the 3 item special. The bean and cheese burrito was huge! The chicken flautas had a small side of sour cream and guacamole to dip which was great. The cheese enchilada was disappointing as it appeared over cooked. I'm not sure if it would have tasted different ordering in restaurant opposed to take out. Regardless, they are always very good about providing a bag of chips and one each on the salsas which is super appreciated because you cannot rely on delivery drivers to pick out salsa for you.

Popped in here in our last day of vacation and I am SO glad we did. I had been craving Mexican and wanted one final good meal before heading back home, and this place was legit. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's small inside, I was a little nervous about seating, but people seemed to dine and leave rather quickly so we managed to get a spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My mom ordered the quesadilla and it was HUGE. Delicious and more than enough to share. My cheese enchiladas were simple but perfect. Even both my kids devoured their enchiladas. If you're looking for fast and good food, this place is it.

I guess I'm a good snob when it comes to Mex food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Upon walking in, we had to wipe down our own table that was filled with stains.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Yikes. Ordered the shrimp burrito with cabbage and a cream slaw (does not come with beans or rice) $14 And the asada bowl (which has steak, grilled vegis, and beans at the bottom), that was tasty) $18. The food is good - ish. More like 3.5 stars but we were greeted with a a nice lady with some chips. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but maybe it's the best for the area?

Whole in the wall in Newport Beach. We stopped in after a whale watching cruise, but it did seem like a mix of locals and tourists. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's very casual and not a fancy atmosphere, but the food speaks for itself in terms of value, quality and authenticity.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have specials on Tuesday and Friday for $2 and $2.75 tacos. My sister and I both got 3 tacos each and a larger order of chips and guacamole. It was more than enough food for a relatively inexpensive lunch! The staff were very friendly, happy to answer menu questions and efficient.

Quick stop as I was in the area. The fried fish tacos have always been a favorite of mine when I come down here. Ordered 2, one for myself and one for my brother. The sauce was flavorful and not overly powerful. Cabbage, pico, sauce and some hot salsa make a good taco. Wait wasn't too bad either though they got busy right after we ordered. Good spot and will continue to visit when I come to the beach.

This is the best place to get your VITAMIN T - tacos, tamales, tortillas, tequila, etc. This is my absolute FAVORITE taco Tuesday place. There is nothing gourmet about great mex but IT IS DELICIOUS and authentic American-Mexican . Their ground beef taco are my favorite. The meat is so flavorful and it is so filling. I also love getting their guacamole on the side. My fiancé and I are here every Tuesday and I crave their tacos in the days in between! Their so popular that you'll have to expect to wait for a table on taco tuesdays but it is 100% worth the wait. read more

This place is amazing for all three meals of the day. It is probably my favorite breakfast burrito in the entire world. For lunch and dinner it is a comfortable place to go as a group or solo, or for take out. So many great combo options. Don't forget taco Tuesdays. Five stars! read more

My gf read all the positive reviews so she decided to take me here. There was a line of maybe 10 customers in front of us to order. So that took about 10-15 minutes. Not much seating so that's a negative. Once we placed our order, the food came out pretty quick. The food was just mediocre. Nothing special. Seemed a little pricey for what you get. read more

This taco spot, located near the Balboa Pier (walking distance) sitting on the beach sand side of Main St, Balboa Island. Referred and taken by my dear friend Adam, recommended that these are bomb tacos and they have crispy taco's. Seems like there's always a line, because the place is small. It's the size of a bedroom, but the prices are amazingly priced for delicious tacos.Could at least put some outdoor tables or something for everyone. Since seats are first come first serve, it seemed like a lot of people ended up ordering to go. Came for Taco Tuesday. We all ordered the tacos.$1.25 each. I tried the soft taco with carne asada and chick; and a crispy taco with shredded chick. The tacos were not a disappointment at all. Tried the salsa's and carrots provided, I was very impressed and liked the condiments. My brother ordered all crispy, he said next time he'll try the soft cause the crispy taco's broke too easy fast. I would give this place 5 stars for good prices and food, but i disliked the seating space. Note: This place always has a line, so don't rush to find seats. it's a hit or miss. read more

Amazing authentic Mexican food on the peninsula, with a serious salsa bar. It gets packed and seating is limited but you could always take it to go and eat on the boardwalk. Taco Tue. is a deal with $1.25 for most tacos and $7 pitchers of beer. Yum! read more

Some of the best shrimp tacos I've found in Southern California. Chicken soft tacos are great, too! Fresh chips and salsa bar with your order is a plus. Coke in a bottle is great with the shrimp taco combo. $1 taco Tuesdays and Friday can't be beat. Dining area isn't the best, but it's a beach taco shop. read more

My wife and I were looking for a good place to eat in the area and checked out Yelp via phone app. Great food, large servings, and at a great price. Only draw back is the palce is tiny. They had a good selection of food on the menu to satisfy everyone. Please try this place out, you won't be dissapointed. read more

They are not open until midnight. We got here before 10p on a Saturday and even though the door was unlocked and many people were eating inside we were told they are closed. Eating here after the holiday light cruise has been a tradition for 4 years. This was supposed to be the 5th but we were denied. Very disappointing. read more

We started coming to Great Mex when searching for the best taco Tuesday location. We really like Fred's in HB but Great Mex is a totaaally different scene. The scene...is TINY!! Tiny tiny tiny. On Tuesdays in the winter are usually less crowded but in the summer forget about getting a table and take it to the beach to eat. We usually go around 8 pm and me and a friend scope out tables for people who look like their wiping their mouths, throwing their designer bags on their shoulders and getting up to leave. Then we slide right in and wait for our guys to order and bring the food over. There is typically a good surfer/newport vibe with young twenty something yuppies and the usual loud self entitled teen groups. One night, there were 2 teenage girls and an old lady who sat at a high in demand table for 45 minutes just talking. No food, no drinks, just TALKING. Talk about RUDE-people were eating STANDING UP and they just sat there. My review is only based on experiences on Tuesday evenings. The tacos are $1 and the beers are cold and cheap too. I always get shrimp which I think is actually $2, but who's keeping track, I guess my bf is since he pays! He gets a chicken and carnitas. We love Great Mex's tacos they are yummy, fresh, crunchy, and authentic (as authentic as an adopted Korean from Michigan can tell anyways!). Their chips are good and they have a salsa bar that has many choices. I like the green salsa and the dark stuff is pretty good too. Don't forget the pickled veggies! Anyways, don't let the crown dissuade you from dropping in to Great Mex for some great food. Try lunches or another evening than Tuesdays. read more

Food is good and very reasonably priced. The salsa tastes great. The only problem is the place is extremely small and very crowded/cramped. We went during the week around 5 pm & still couldn't get a table. Couldn't even find a place to stand to wait on the order. read more

The chorizo, egg and cheese burrito I had for breakfast this morning was off the hook! Not to mention it was also just the right size and a very reasonable $5.95. My wife got huevos rancheros, which she was equally pleased with, for $6.95. So why not the 5th star? I got a taco al pastor on the side that was a little too dry and lacked flavor. They have an ample menu however, and those eating around us seemed to really enjoy their plates. They also cook the food directly behind the window facing the street. Gotta appreciate that. If I were a local, I'd def go back. read more

We came here based on yelp reviews. We had a party of 11 and our bill total was pretty cheap. Food was acceptable. Definitely not authentic Mexican as most claim. One of the plates we ordered was enchiladas and the sauce was definitely pre-made. I asked for a side of sour cream and they charged me $1 for a small plastic container (the small ones they use for salsa bar). I mean, really? We just ordered $100 worth of food and you can't give me 2 tbsp of sour cream? Crappy customer service imo. Enchiladas and quesadillas should come with sour cream as a standard anyway! Overall, it was not a budget breaker and the food was acceptable. Beats Taco Bell, I guess. read more

I love Great Mex so much for taco Tuesday and taco Friday, it gets a little crowded though so don't expect a nice quiet sit down place. Their breakfast burritos are bomb too. Hugo, the manager is real friendly and always keeps the locals stoked. Only Mexican restaurant I would ever recommend to anyone in Newport. read more

I was so excited about trying Great Mex. But, I was completely disappointed. The meats had no flavor...Except the shrimp which was over seasoned. The rice had no flavor and was dry and cold. The beans also no flavor. Even the cheese had no flavor...how could that be?? To top it off not only was one of the salsas spoiled but so was the shredded chicken in the hard shell taco. Stay away...go somewhere else...just don't go to Great Mex. read more

Used to come here for Taco Tuesdays. They have decent tacos for $1 and cold beer for $1 every Tuesday. Good chips and ok salsa bar (includes red, green, pico, onions, cilantro, etc. the basic). Cool hole in the place. Perfect for just hanging out. I think this place is good for groups of 2-6, anything bigger than that will not find space. read more

We stopped in for lunch on a Saturday and the place was moderately busy. I got a chicken fajita burrito and my girlfriend got a carne asada burrito. Both were delicious. The fajita burrito is served enchilada style with melted cheese and guac on top. Yumm! All entrees are served with chips and unlimited salsa bar while you wait! Highly recommended if in the Balboa area and looking for a quick bite! read more

This would be a super great place if you are completely smashed and can't see or taste your food. I ordered 4 shrimp tacos and they stuck in a box such that it looked like I had 3. I went back and asked for clarification and the sweaty cook wiped his forehead before proceeding to stick his stinky finger between the flour tortillas to show me that there were actually four. To my surprise there were four, covered with chipolte sauce and now this cooks greasy sweaty finger juice. You couldn't eat them if you wanted to unless you used a fork and once the dude stuck his finger in the taco tortilla I was completely grossed out. Well, asked the dude for a refund because at this point I'd lost my appetite. The clerk refused and when I asked for the manager he came out with a chip on his shoulder and yelled at me for asking for my money back. What a jack ass! He gave me my cash back but seriously this place sucks. Floor is filthy dirty (as is kitchen), Hygiene is not in their vocabulary. If you were extremely drunk or possibly so high it might be really great! PASS read more

There's so much to say about Great Mex. Good food, service, beer, taco Tuesdays, and Thursday's. If you want to know where the locals go, and not eat crappy tourist food, this is your place! Tip of the day - line is always out the door but if you call a to go order in while you are in line, it'll be ready by the time you get to the front. You can thank me later :-) I've had the fajita burrito, taquitos, tacos, and huevo rancheros - all fantastic! read more

We were staying in Newport Beach and we were walking around the neighborhood near our rental house checking out all the local places to eat and I spotted Great Mex and told my wife that I wanted to pick some food up to go. Mexican food is my favorite! I ordered the shrimp tacos! Our kids got the crispy chicken tacos! My wife got cheese enchiladas! Everything was really good! My wife loved the red sauce on her enchiladas! And we all loved the salsa! We'll be back for sure! read more

It was almost a perfect burger except that by the end the garlic flavor (tasted real and fresh - not powdered) was a bit overwhelming for my palette. The combo with the red onions (also potent) made for an intense experience, and the first bite was sublime. The steak sandwich was seasoned similarly and presented like a close cousin of the burger, with similar toppings and flavor profile. The fries were unremarkable both straight and Parmesan truffled. For the price I want blown away. I have had burgers and sandwiches of similar quality for 60% of the mid $20s we paid for these two dishes. Overall, this is an excellent spot for a small group with diverse tastes, there will be something for everyone, and it's just upscale enough (matching its Fashion Island surroundings) to be worthy of a date night or professional meetup over lunch if you work in Newport Center as well.
