The keg for the red ale that I ordered got kicked, but the bartender didn't think I noticed and tried to top off my beer with the easy citra ale from the tap next to it. I politely asked if the beer I was then served was in fact a red ale as it didn't have any color, consistency, nor flavor of a red ale, and yet all of the above from the tap next to it. Not only did the bartender deny this, but she attempted to pour me another glass of red ale to prove it, only for both of us to see that the keg was kicked. She then poured a tiny drop of the citra ale into a glass, held it up to mine, and said "See, they're not the same color" which was true only because the beer I had been served was a mix of the citra ale and what was left of the red ale from the bottom of the keg before it got kicked and she mixed the two in a single glass. My friend and I had just finished a hike nearby and thought this place sounded great. We had both never eaten here before. We both ordered, I got a cheeseburger with extra crispy bacon. My friend ordered a BBQ burger and upon getting our food, the portion size was small, my bacon slices were THE MOST FATTY BACON I had ever had. To the point where I just removed it entirely. My burger also hardly had any cheese and my friends burger was literally cubed pieces of BBQ chicken and two pieces of bread. No lettuce, tomato or anything similar. Having family from down south we know BBQ as pulled pork and it was sooo good. We started with pulled pork nachos and beer battered zucchini both good. We had burgers, brisket, chicken fingers, wings, Mac and cheese and ribs. We all agreed the pulled pork was the best but it was all good. The chicken with avocado and bacon - called the California Chicken sandwich was delicious. Nice clean and friendly staff. I recommend it as a good pit stop to eat and refresh. Copperopolis was an old mining town. In Copperopolis bullets were manufactured for the army in the 1800's. They built a new town square in 2008. Great atmosphere! I gave it 3 stars because my sandwich was not very good. Bummed because everyone else's food was pretty good. I had the portobello mushroom sandwich and I could only take a few bites. The mushroom tasted like it was soaked in liquid smoke and the sandwich had way too much goat cheese on it. The fries, side salad and "bottle caps," were good and I really wanted to like the sandwich, it sounded great! Next time I'll try something new and update my review. I didn't think it complemented the pork at all. I didn't see a bottle of real BBQ Sauce anywhere. Meat had no smoke flavor ~ it was not tender & contained 3 T. of fat & gristle which I had to pick out. Mac 'n Cheese was gummy like it had been precooked. When I go to Griff's I get the brisket. Do you smoke it and serve it and it's really good beef. They also have ribs and a darn good hamburger. Felix likes to get the dinner box with the ribs and a couple sides to go and bring it home. I like going there because they have a bar and it's a good atmosphere. Stopped in here on a Friday evening for some BBQ. This restaurant is part of the newer Copperopolis Town Center just off Hwy 4. The first thing you'll notice is this huge custom 'reclaimed wood' door when you walk up to the entry! Just inside there's a u shaped bar across the dining area and a dozen or so tables. This place looks very nice inside! The menu has your prototypical bbq/ smoked meat entrees: brisket, ribs, chicken and pulled pork. They also were offering prime rib, but I opted for ribs and brisket. The ribs were 'top shelf', fully rendered St. Louis spares with a nice rub and sauce cooked into the exterior! These were, right at, 'fall off the bone' tenderness which is how I like em'! There were several slices of, very tender, 'cut with a fork' brisket and zero fat (again, the way I like it) The signature smoke ring was absent from these slices, but perhaps they use an electric smoker? I also ordered the Cole Slaw and Chili which was very tasty. The cornbread muffin was hot, moist and delicious, but the overall flavor was a bit spoiled by the whipped butter and honey that had citrus zest mixed in. (Not a fan of the zest!) but they did offer regular butter after I slathered mine with the zest... My wife had the fried pickles, a salad and a couple of corn bread muffins. She enjoyed all of it! The atmosphere and service was perfect! No complaints! This would be a future special occasion or splurge visit, since the price out the door was $70 for 2. I recommend you put this place on your future search for great BBQ in California! read more
