Hands down favorites - Lechon Kawali and Sautéed Bok Choy (which has actually has Shrimp but on their Vegetables section) - and the Garlic Rice! I have tried the same dishes in other Filipino restaurants and haven't really found them done better. This restaurant is a gem - my fave spot for Filipino in Manhattan - totally worth a visit to the Stuytown area. I had been feeling both physically sick and homesick, and decided to give Grill 21 a try on UberEats because they serve lugaw (definitely a go-to). I had tried some Filipino spots in Manhattan, but hadn't been too impressed. That was until I tried Grill 21. This is the most authentic it gets on this island. While eating here, Manhattan might as well be the 7,002nd Philippine Island. I ordered the Lugaw Tokwa't Baboy. The flavors, the spices, and textures all worked together to bring me back to my Lola's house. We ordered 2 different platters (both comes with garlic rice)- one with lumpia (filipino spring rolls) and fried pork belly (chunks of pork with crispy skin). I particularly enjoyed the fried pork belly which was crunchy and juicy in the right places. The grilled pork belly was amazing. Really good flavor and grilled perfectly. The sisig was probably the most unique and memorable of the night. Sisig is a traditional dish made with chopped pig ear and pork belly, topped with a raw egg. It comes on a sizzling hot plate which then you mix in the raw egg. The outcome is a savory slightly spicy stir fry. We came here for a family reunion of 30+ people, and they were so friendly and accommodating. It's a pretty small space, but somehow, they managed to squeeze us all in. All of the food items were delicious, from the lumpia to the sinigang to the halo halo for dessert. We had pre-ordered items for our party, and dish after dish was fresh, delicious, and authentic. My personal favorite was their amazing lechon kawali, with its glass-like crispy skin and tender, juicy pork belly meat. It was so perfectly cooked and delicious, and I especially enjoyed the little bits with the small bones. We enjoyed it so much that a few of us came back a two days later. Again, they were incredibly accommodating and provided great service. Not surprisingly, the food was again top notch and delicious. My husband and I went here on a Friday night because we were craving for Filipino food. Worst experience ever. Atmosphere - Cramped. The whole place could probably sit less than 30 people. Interiors don't really reflect the Filipino culture. Service - VERY LOUSY. Took a while before our orders were taken. Food arrived after a while and we couldn't decide whether the it was worse than the service. Our water glasses were never refilled. Asked for soy sauce and hot sauce and it never came. Not once did the waiter approach us to ask about our food or if we needed anything else. Food - Decent but forgettable. My husband got sisig but it wasn't the best we've ever had. It was chewy more than crunchy, and it could use more seasoning. Ordered the platter with lumpiang shanghai (the saving grace of the entire meal) and pork belly, and more than half of the pork was FAT. I understand that it was a busy night and there was only one server present (What's up with that?!) but they should work out a more efficient system to get things running smoothly. After we asked for the check, the server got caught in the middle of serving dishes to another party, taking phone orders, and handing out takeout orders. Had to wait at least 20 minutes to pay for our food. The overall experience was a complete disaster. Avoid this place at all costs. This is going to be our first and last time visiting this place. This place is tucked away all the way on the east side (close to 1st Avenue) and the exterior isn't much to look at, but the food is authentic and tasty. We were seated immediately, as there were not too many people at the place, which was pretty small. I came here with a friend with the intention to enjoy Filipino Restaurant Week ($35 appetizer and entree for 2 people), but we were told that we were a week early. Since we were already there we decided to stay and we actually still got a great deal for the food we ordered. For the Platter's Menu, you can select 2 entrees and it's only $16. We chose lumpiang shanghai (of course) and tapa which is beef. When ordering, the waiter gave us the option of garlic rice which we happily took. The lumpia was wonderful - Crunchy bite sized egg roll stuffed with seasoned ground pork and vegetables. They were small, but packed with great flavor and the dipping sauce it came with was good as well. The tapa was fried thinly sliced beef marinated in garlic, vinegar, soy sauce and other spices. I really liked the crispiness of the meat, as well as how succulent it tasted. The garlic rice was also yummy. For dessert, we ordered Turon which is fried banana spring rolls and Ube ice cream, which is purple yam flavor. The Turon was plated beautifully with honey and coconut flakes on top. This was absolutely delicious - The spring rolls were perfectly crispy with the fresh taste of banana inside and just the right amount of sweetness. The Ube ice cream was a pretty purple color and also had coconut flakes sprinkled on top. It was quite unique but I liked it a lot. It was very creamy with a thick consistency and has a nice earthy purple yam flavor. The service was quick and efficient - We received our order in a timely manner. Did not even show any Filipino hospitality. She even tried rush us out telling us that they are closing at 3:30pm instead of 4:30pm as it shows in their posting. I went here for a simple lunch to try something new for myself, Philippine cuisine as a solo diner around 1 pm on a Thursday. Despite being a weekday, the tables were majorly filled in this small restaurant with people of varying ages. The restaurant is very small in the first place so definitely not good for big groups, but it didn't feel that cramp when I'm sitting down or maybe because my table was not between two other tables. I ordered the Longsilog from the brunch special which has two short pieces of sweet ground pork sausage, two eggs (I asked for sunny side-up), garlic rice and a side sauce of soy-sauce mixed with vinegar. The sausages were sweet indeed but not like a candy-sweet and had quite a bit of oil. I enjoyed them more when I dipped them into the vinegar soy sauce because it mixed the flavors of sour and sweet together. The garlic rice was okay to me; the taste of the garlic wasn't that strong. It may not look like much, but it filled me up in the end which is pretty sweet for the price it costed. Service was nice but only one server for all the tables so service is on the slower side. Came to Grill 21 roughly a year ago now. It's actually pretty hard to find this place, so look closely. It's not actually on the avenue, but on the street, so make sure not to make the mistake of looking too closely on 1st ave if you're walking up or down. The restaurant is pretty small, but it's large enough to the point where you'll still be comfortable in your seat. The food here is actually really good. I'd describe it overall as having a lot of flavor. Somewhat oily, very garlicky. Actually perfect for my tastes? I ordered the lechon, which was deep fried and very crispy. It was a little bit too dry for me, so I wound up eating more of my friend's dish, which was the adobo pork. Also really good, but less dry than the lechon. My friend also got a soup. I've been here once and ordered a few times within the past month or so. I like that they have an outdoor dining and a fair amount of lunch specials. I ordered their diniguan during their lunch special and it was soooo delicious! I am so grateful to have a place for dinuguan that will not require me to go all the way in Queens. I've also ordered for delivery twice so far for my work lunch and got their platter! Their platter consists of rice and two dishes to choose from. I chose the pork (belly) inihaw and longanisa with my rice. It was delicious! It was interesting that it was loaded with the dish and not enough rice but I cannot complain because I love the "ulam" portion. I ordered via Yelp and my order was on time so I am grateful. My second order was not a platter. I ordered their beef sinigang and it was deliciously on point! I can confirm that their sinigang has amazing sourness that Filipinos can approve and want for their sinigang. So this is how a Filipino Restaurant is supposed to be like? Sweet. The closest I've ever gotten to a Filipino restaurant was this shady joint close to my parents home in VA. My Filipino friends always told me to stay clear from there, so I never bothered to try any of their food. Except for their Halo Halo. One of my NYUCD friends suggested that we grab lunch at this really nice Filipino restaurant nearby our school. I was super hungry and a bit reluctant to give this place a shot. Primarily because the only Filipino food I've ever tried were at my friends homes (yum). I really didn't want to leave this place disappointed. Boy Oh Boy am I glad we came here. Really good food I tell ya! Really good. There are a few things that I always get when coming here and they never disappoint. Maybe one day I'll venture deeper into their menu. Their lumpias are to die for. The soups are all freshly made and have a very homey touch to it. Their pork dishes are fatty, tender, and super tasty. Paired with your choice of white rice or garlic rice (thin slices of fried garlic). This place will turn that frown upside down. Try their halo halo regular or halo halo special. Its a Filipino dessert that has a hodgepodge of sweet goodies. Its topped with Ube, which is a purple ice cream made up of yams. Gross? I THINK NOT. If you've not tried this dessert before, please do yourself a favor and try it here. If you are not into trying new things and would like to stick to the usual vanilla ice cream, cool. We walked in and were quickly greeted. We were seated at a 4-seater table next to the door, which wasn't preferable since we got a huge chill every time the door was opened; even though they did have the 2 door hallway thing going on. They had a pretty wide selection of Filipino dishes on their menu, including the Halo-Halo for dessert. The food tasted slightly different then it does back home, as if more Americanized but none-the-less it was good food for nostalgia purposes. If you're looking for no frills Filipino food that is simply traditional, then you come here. I have noticed that some people have said that this is expensive. It may not be as cheap as Woodside, but they also have to pay rent. I dined with one other person and we were very full after a portion of pancit canton, a platter of longanisa and chicken bbq and an extra garlic rice. The bill didn't come out bad at all. For Manhattan, this is on the cheaper side, considering that you know what to order. Platters are great because they allow you to try a little of different items. I would highly recommend them. I love that when you walk up to the door the backdoor to the kitchen is also open, so you smell the food as you arrive, and you can see the chefs at work.. no discredit to the newer Filipino spots opening in the city, but like our favorites in Queens, the chefs here are all still Filipino If I'm rolling solo- I order a calamansi, lumpia shanghai, and longsilog (sunnyside up is assumed) with garlic fried rice (if you don't order garlic fried rice at a Filipino resto, we can't be friends. Today I felt the craving for kare-kare so I ordered that to go for dinner later When I'm with friends, I will also recommend the sizzling sisig, lechon kawali, and halo halo to share. This resto stays authentic, no frills- if you want to drink, go with the San Miguel, but they keep it simple here, which is all you need sometimes! Oh Grill 21...I've been to other Filipino restaurants in the city but you're still the best. Just the classics done simply and well. I stand by my prior review: if Filipino food were presented to the New York palate just like this--authentic, simple, tasty--without being gussied up, our food would be represented as ubiquitously as other cuisines. Was craving vegetable spring roll with vinegar dipping sauce and this did not disappoint. (though there was a flavor that I thought was a bit odd. But that doesn't stop me). Hubs got lumpiang shanghai and polished off the whole plate tiny rolls. The mains were the absolute stars though. We got three things, all of them absolutely delicious: Binagoongan Bicol Express Ginisang Munggo We got garlic rice to go with our meal, and unlike other places where garlic rice is just plain rice topped with garlic, this place cooks the rice with the garlic in it, resulting in carby garlicky goodness. For dessert hubs got the halo halo--again, halo halo runs the gamut from crappy, to mediocre, to really well-done, and this place does not disappoint. Gotta say, drinks menu could expand a bit.
