Read good things about this place and we're out and about kinda early so we stopped in to see what all the fuss was about. Really local vibe. Really busy but we sat ourselves pretty quick right by a window. Server came over after a few minutes and got our drink order. Menu is pretty large so we were not ready to order. So I grabbed the Original Grinder. Had to try the OG. Very fresh. Lite dressing and really good bread. Really good. Also had the Tots. Maybe a little over done but they were tasty. Deb got the Biscuits and Sausage Gravy Breakfast. Gravy was really good with lite fluffy biscuits. The reviews and hype are real. This place has solid comfort food and service is pretty quick.

spicy smoked sausage with cheese on raisin toast. Sweet and Spicy!

It's been over a year since my last review, and this place has become a Saturday tradition for me and friends who come in from all over town. Prices have gone up (like everywhere), but the food and service are still spot on. I used to be all about their corned beef hash, but lately I've been hooked on my own little creation: spicy smoked sausage with cheese on raisin toast. Sounds odd, but trust me... don't knock it till you try it. April is our go-to waitress, and she's always amazing. Friendly, attentive, and makes sure we're taken care of every time. Grinder's is still that comfortable diner you can count on for good food and good people.

My daughter had the Country Breakfast (what I had our first time in). I had Short Stack, Banana and Pecans Combo with a side of sausage links. The pancakes are delicious and fluffy. The sweet tea wasn't good today. It tasted watered down, so we switched to sprite. That tasted off as well, so we ended up with water but I still paid for the teas although we didn't drink the tea or the soda. Overall, we had a great second experience.

I was getting my car serviced at Nissan less than a mile away. My friend picked me up, and we stopped in for breakfast. I found Grinder's American Diner on Yelp with four stars. I'm giving five stars. My sausage gravy and biscuits were delicious. The gravy consistency was perfect, not too thin or thick. And was packed with flavor. The biscuits were light and fluffy yet huge. My scrambled eggs with cheese were cooked perfectly! My friend enjoyed her breakfast too. She did say she had tried better fried green tomatoes. Our server was friendly and checked in regularly. It was an old school diner feel with a family vibe. I could tell several patrons were regulars. Always a good indication! There was also outdoor seating available. If you are looking for a good no nonsense breakfast, stop in and give them a try.

Same Old Grind. Half eaten!! So delicious. Upgrade to the baby cakes!

Grinders is one of my favorite diners in Jax. Always quick service and delicious food. If your in for breakfast make sure to upgrade to the babycakes. Yumm! Just an FYI if you check in using Yelp it says you get a free coffee but they do not honor it.

Grinders has a great menu. Need to go there for just more than breakfast. My normal breakfast. 2 eggs, chicken fried chicken with pepper gravy. Home fried potatoes grilled. Everything was good. A bit slow but good. They were busy.

    Same old grind! $9.99

This place is well run, with women servers on a mission for excellence: people are seated promptly and are seen by their server quickly. Here are some things that I noticed about this place: -the family bathroom was clean, well-lit, and (thank god) did feature a coat rack! *this is important for purses*, changing station, and railing on the door and walls to assist our friends who need extra support. -the grits were HOT, buttered and delicious, very simple recipe with cheddar cheese and my addition of salt & pepper, best restaurant grits ever (and I'm generally underwhelmed by grits from every restaurant) -I was able to sub turkey sausage for my topping in the Secret Bene dish was met with a smile and agreeance. No pork on this fork -if you want to dine with ease, come here the seating in the general dining area is built for tables of 2-4 patrons, semi-closely spaced but the larger tabletops are sequestered into their own section. This seating plans allows for smaller parties to be tended to quickly and redirects the noise and collaboration needed to tend to a larger table top away from others' dining experience. I am delightfully pleased to say that they need to bring back this classic American dining practice of partitioning of space for a larger tables. I remember this in restaurants like ihop and TGI Fridays from back in the day, it does make a difference. -the silverware was clean, very clean place. Thank you SGC!

She liked how buttery the croissant was and said it held up fairly well to the main ingredients. She really liked the breakfast potatoes for her side and said she'd order them every time. Even though we had a reservation, it didn't seem to make a difference. We waited about 15 minutes just to find a host or hostess to be seated. During that time, we saw several other groups leave because no one was available to greet or seat them. It wasn't the best first impression and definitely set the tone for the visit. Once we were seated, the food was excellent. You can really tell that everything is made from scratch, and the quality and freshness stood out. The Garlic Parmesan Brussels Sprouts, topped with garlic aioli and Parmesan cheese, were delicious and packed with flavor. I also ordered the Kale Caesar Salad with grilled chicken, which was fresh and well-balanced with house greens, Parmesan cheese, and Caesar vinaigrette. My little ones ordered the Crispy Southern Fried Chicken Fingers with fries, and they both really enjoyed their meals. Overall, the food was definitely the highlight of our visit, but the service and lack of organization upon arrival could use improvement. If they can address the front-of-house experience, it would make for a much better visit.

To start there's a whole lot more outdoor seating than there is indoor seating. Well inherently that's not a problem. I just found it unique. The staff was extremely nice at least our waitress was and overall no problem with the actual service we received. It was really well decorated. In fact, I would say arguably better decorated than some of the other locations for this particular chain that we have gone to. But the reason that it's only getting two stars instead of my typical five is the food. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and frankly when you're in the south that's something that should be a staple- this was a complete mess. There was either too much salt or too much pepper or maybe both? Which really left a lackluster taste I didn't even get through the first half of one of my biscuits. Biscuits seemed standard frozen biscuit fair for a breakfast establishment, unfortunately. And it's a vast contrast to some of the other places that used to be in Jacksonville or still are like Cracker Barrel or Village Inn- heck even Famos Amos has/had better biscuits and gravy. But for the fact that I didn't put anything on my eggs, which were delicious. I shouldn't be leaving this place with heartburn, considering I had a milk based gravy. The former city grits now bacon Gouda grits were OK but also very salty. Maybe too much bacon grease in it? I'm not sure. My partner says that his Benedict a shrimp Benedict something that's supposed to be there special for the season, was extremely sweet and the cherry tomatoes that he got were the most savory thing on his dish and he had shrimp Benedict with a side of cheese grits. There shouldn't really have been anything sweet in that dish, except maybe the hollandaise sauce. We were hoping to rekindle a classic taste from a familiar chain from our previous residence and enjoy brunch this morning. Maybe it was an off day for this particular location and if that's the case OK. However, due to this experience, we may not actually come back here. Paying $73 including tip for food that I can make better at home is not really my idea of a great breakfast. Kids oj was over $4. Plus $8 for her food. She took three bites and ate the bacon. Not a hit for her either.
