I wanted to visit Sunset Blvd. on this weekend trip to Los Angeles. I wanted to visit my old stomping ground Amoeba Music. I decided to have a cafe trip. I decided on this one across the street from Amoeba. I decided on the espresso shot to have a taste and it was cheaper than the other drinks. This drink list is expensive. You can use the bathroom, but you have to make a purchase and they give you the code on a receipt. I checked-in and got 10% off to redeem! Yay. So I paid maybe $2 somethin for an espresso. I was staying with my cousins who lived in the area and we were driving out to see the Grand Canyon in the morning. My cousin surprised us with breakfast from here, and I loved it!! As a caffeine addict, I have tasted plenty of fine coffee (as well as some not-so-great coffee). I came here as I was running some errands near Hollywood Blvd, and this coffee shop was the closest to me at the time. Parking can be a pain, depending on the time of day. I came on a late weekday morning, so I was able to find street parking. They do not have their own lot. The coffee shop itself is sizable, with plenty of seating, and a nice atmosphere that's conducive for studying. The staff was very friendly, and was able to carry out my customer order well. I ordered a mocha latte, and they made it to perfection. Their stuff is organic, and the quality definitely showed. I'd recommend this place for a good cup of Joe. read more

Not your average organic coffee shop. This place definitely goes above and beyond making sure that not only is there quality in your meal, but that you will be satisfied with the amount of food you'll be getting. Very chill environment near the heart of LA with great food and general service. You have plenty of options to choose from for any breakfast, brunch, or lunch craving. As well as of course any sort of brew or soda you may need. The gentleman at the check-in counter that charged me seemed a bit agitated, maybe it was too early and not his day? That did have a bit of a negative impact on my initial experience but after I got my food I was definitely taken away quickly (sorta) forgot about him. This place will not share the restroom to the public, you'll need a code AND this place is wheelchair friendly as well. I got a hot chocolate and the breakfast burrito at first seemed like a bit of a let down simply because the burrito looked so small. All joking aside, I tend to judge a coffee shop by it's barista. Specifically, how hipster do they look dictates how tasty their coffee shots are pulled. When I arrived I was kinda sad to see that they looked just like normal people. I don't mean that in a mean way at all... they were actually all beautiful people, but not what I pictured in my mind. We ordered our typical drink: vanilla latte with almond milk. To be honest, my wife and I ordered just one to try before we laid down the $ for two incase the drink wasn't up to par. To cut to the chase, we were very pleased with the drink, so much that we did order a 2nd one and also began to peruse the food menu. We ended up ordering the avocado toast. Now, the menu gives the feeling that these are small bites and that is what they are. Don't expect a full meal, but the bites are tasty for sure! The actual location is spacious but was crowded... I guess another good sign for a coffee shop! It's location near Hollywood makes it a perfect place to stop and grab a drink and bite. read more

ORGANIC COFFEE! Okay, now that I have your attention: Yes, the coffee is amazing, no matter how you order it. The cold brew is a little on the mellower side than I like it, but for the sake of convenience, I do love that they pre-package it in take-away bottles for your morning java on-the-go. Their almond milk and hemp lattes are the bomb-diggity; no sweetener necessary. And while they have an amazing horchata latte, I prefer making my own without the sugar by getting an almond milk or hemp latte and just adding a bunch of cinnamon from their " coffee condiments" table with all the different milks and sweeteners. While they are serving up some of the priciest coffee shop food I've seen yet, it is well-worth the price for the quality, freshness, and taste you get. And this isn't just stale sandwiches and moldy scones as hard as your conscience, people. It is legit, hearty, savory, stick-to-your-ribs food, with a somewhat classier twist. Sandwiches and burritos? Check. Meat-packed, vegetarian, and vegan options to please any palette? Check. Healthy salads with an exciting twist? Check. Packed rice bowls topped with top-of-the-line ingredients? Check. Light toasts with yummy toppings to get your morning started? Yup! The Umami Bowl with their Bitches Brew Short Ribs, Tumeric Brown Rice, Wild Mushrooms, Toasted Almonds, Rapini, Smoked Chili Oil, Ginger Scallion Sauce, & Togarashi is totally worth the $12 you pay for it. Popped in today for the Daybreaker breakfast sandwich and a Vietnamese Coffee. Used the Yelp offer and it was under $13 for both! The sandwhich was delicious and well worth $7. They subbed their tempeh bacon for the regular bacon with no extra charge which I think is awesome. The Vietnamese coffee is strong and not too sweet or heavy. One of my fave Groundworks drinks. Staff is fast and pleasant - I def recommend! read more

Caramel latte had these crystal-ish texture tasted like grain and the taste doesn't compliment the coffee. For matcha latte I had to go back and ask them to add more matcha because it just straight up taste like milk (and i drink matcha latter from diff coffee places) and even adding it wasn't good. So this is my usual coffee shop stop during my work week but today was a strange experience. I ordered an iced matcha with cashew milk and when I got my drink it was an off light color. I thought well it probably doesn't taste bad, but it tasted thick and creamy. The drink was more of a cashew milk latte with a splash of matcha. So definitely not the usual matcha flavor. I had to head back into work so I didn't have time to go back and as for a remake. I think the cashew milk used in my drink was expired because it smelled strange too!! One of THE best coffee places I've had so far. I'm usually picky with how my drinks are and a lot of cafes have watered down coffee or it's not strong enough to my liking. Groundwork never fails me and I will definitely go there all the time. The employees are really friendly and offer suggestions if you're not sure what to get. I think their drinks are all pretty safe, haven't tried all of them though. Their matcha latte and horchata cold brew are pretty good. The only thing is that there isn't much parking, so always a struggle but cute cafe overall. Not too much seating, but a good place to chill for a little break. read more

I really enjoyed both the hot mocha as well as the Vietnamese iced coffee here, though I do wish they would come in larger sizes. Service is great, drinks made to order quickly, love the vibe here too, very rough and industrial, though not so much comfortable for hanging out for awhile. Stopped in on a Sunday morning to kick my day off and had not tried this place before. I ordered a pour over coffee and a couple of breakfast side items. Opinion. Coffee was pretty good. I ordered a pour over on ice. For a pour over, I have had many to compare and this one stands somewhere in the middle. Meaning I would not rush back to GroundWork to order another one but if this were the only coffee shop in the area it would be fine to do again. Food. Probably not meant to be a breakfast stop but offers food to go with coffee which is nicer than the average danish and muffin only coffee shop. I ordered scrambled eggs and a English muffin. The eggs were good and the English muffin was dense and maybe sourdough ? Service. The woman at the register was extremely friendly and nice. She asked me questions on what kind of coffee I liked to determine the brew for my pour over. Another guy was next to her helping w my selection. Nice way to start the experience. A middle age man with thinning hair (sorry there are no name tags here- it's not McDonald's.) called me when my food was ready and I told him I ordered a English muffin with my eggs that he presented solo on the plate -- he somewhere somehow forgot the manual on customer service gestures and rolled his eyes saying "all of those eggs are not going to fit on an English muffin " like buddy! I ordered a English muffin just toast the darn thing and get it to me. This guy was a little on the crotchety side, was just angry. I only sat there once since the venue is small, but there are some small tables grouped around a large communal table, and there are 2 rows of bar seating which face Cahuenga Blvd. Sitting farther in can get a little dim; windows offer brighter natural light. The staff are friendly, especially Kristi(?) with the blue hair. She's always helpful and patient with me, even when I'm kind of holding up the line with questions. I feel like some of the others may get annoyed. I'm not doing that on purpose, of course. I just like trying new things. The baristas are cool too. One saw me moving at a glacial pace as to not spill my latte, but he told me not to worry because the foam will hold everything it. One weird thing to note about the condiment bar is that there are no cardboard coffee cup sleeves available to slip around your drink. However, I like that there are many options for drink add-ins, including simple syrup and honey. PASTRIES ORDERED - Lemon currant scone ($3.50). A piece looks small, but it's quite hearty and filling. Not only was the glaze was thin and not overly sweet, but it also enhanced the texture at the edges. Edges are crispy-crumbly while the inside is soft and fluffy. The lemon flavor was pronounced, and the chewy little black currants provided texture. - Ham and cheese croissant ($2.50). This large and square pastry is covered in baked cheese on top. They can warm it up for you too. It was yummy overall, but there could have been more cheese inside. I also didn't like how the slice of ham was rolled up in the croissant so that only the middle bites had ham. I ate the croissant with the chai latte and thought that it tasted peppery with the drink. It was a pretty good combination. DRINKS ORDERED - Iced mocha (16 oz, $4). The coffee was strong and the flavor was interesting, but not my favorite. It tasted natural and not too sweet as I had requested, but it had an unusual aftertaste of soy which was off-putting because it was very savory. It reminded me of a bean curd or bean sprout dish my parents make at home. - Cafe au lait (12 oz, $3.50). Inexpensive for LA and tasted good with a pump of vanilla. - Chai latte (12 oz, $4.50). Super spicy and peppery! I ordered it hot and it warmed me up. Although chai tea can already be an acquired taste, one really has to be in the mood for this blend. It's not smooth; there are little granules of spices mixed throughout. I'm not too keen on that, but I like that it isn't too sweet by default. - Cold brew w/ cashew milk and vanilla (16 oz, $3.50, +$0.50 syrup-3 pumps). Not bad, flavors of cashew milk and vanilla worked well together but the coffee was a little sour/acidic. - Espresso Milkshake (16 oz., $7). THIS IS NOT A MILKSHAKE. DO NOT ORDER THIS IF YOU WANT AN ACTUAL MILKSHAKE! I am typing this update before I have even finished this drink. This is a high-quality frappe/ice blended coffee. It's not sweet enough, thick enough, nor is it actually composed of enough ice cream to be called a milkshake. Yes, it was refreshing on a hot day, but I was disappointed to not be drinking a milkshake. I am incensed but trying to be fair to Groundworks--the flavor of the espresso is great; it tastes strong, but also delicate and it's not acidic or bitter. read more

Groundwork has some of the best coffee around. I have a few subscriptions to roasters around the country, but this is my local spot for lattes and beans when I'm waiting on the mailman. "Venice" is my go-to and every bag I buy is consistent. The employees are all wonderful and Caspian now knows me by name. If I could rate 4.5 stars, I would. I have been a fan of Groundwork ever since I visited their Venice location many years ago. I decided to check out this location, which is located a short distance from the ArcLight Hollywood, before seeing a film. It was a Sunday afternoon, and though the cafe wasn't packed, it sure looked like they were getting a regular flow of customers. Unfortunately, the customer service I got could have used a shot of caffeine. Do you remember that Fuel song "Bad Day" from the early naughties? The employee talking my order looked like the physical manifestation of that song. I couldn't tell what was going on with her, but my questions about the cafe's tea menu was met with blank stares and indifferent attention. I ended up trying their gunpowder green tea, which I enjoyed. I'm still a fan of this coffee chain, so I would likely go back if I'm in the Hollywood area. read more
