Returned to Haiyi Seafood Restaurant with a group of friends visiting Vancouver. This establishment was renovated post COVID and it looked great...clean, bright with plenty of natural light. We arrived early and secured seating...if we came later, we would definitely have needed a reservation as it was full by the time we departed. Ordered several dishes. The taste and presentation of all the dishes were great...and they came out fairly quickly. Loved the eggplant with shrimp paste and the salt and pepper squid. I went here for a family dinner. I haven't been here for a number of years, as I didn't even recognize the interior when I went in. They must have renovated since my last visit. As we sat down and got our tea, the first thing one of the managers did was start suggesting what seafood is in season. This is a common practice to sell the highest price seafood - and it's ok when it happens the first time. But he mentioned it again on 2nd walk-by. And then the other manager tried it too. I felt the first time was enough. We decided to go with the set menu for 6. For the most part the food was fine. It generally tasted good, and the cost was reasonable. But what bothered me were the managers. Our set menu dishes came out in quick succession. One of the servers brought out one the dishes apparently in the wrong order, and the manager decided to yell and curse at her in the middle of the dining room for making the "mistake". But it was set menu, so the dish basically came back out 2 minutes later, so I didn't understand what difference it made. Seemed like a power trip to me. Normally, decent food and substandard service would mean a two star rating. But how the managers went with the incessant upselling and how they treat their staff - immediately deserves the lowest rating. I would not return. read more

Parking is a little difficult but street parking is possible. Restaurant ambiance was ok. Was greeted immediately by a female server and she was really kind. Came here with 9 family members for dinner to celebrate Chinese new year. We wanted to order a ling cod. The server brought out the cod for viewing and to show us the weight. We told him it was too big and that we would prefer a smaller one. He told us "I already killed it" and basically told us we had to take it. At this point we were already pretty upset. Do we spend +$400 on a fish they already killed? Or do we let the fish die for nothing? We already felt ripped off at this point. We removed one other dish and kept the (way too big) fish. They gave free peanuts and picked carrots and daikon for the table. As we were munching on it, one of my family members bit into a FINGER NAIL. It was apparently wrapped around one of the daikons. We immediately told the server and not only did he not apologize, the said "that's crazy", and he took the nail, the dish of daikon and just gave us a bigger bowl of pickled daikon. Disgusting. My family member's appetite was lost at this point. I would say the food itself was very well done. The fish done 4 ways was tasty. Their chicken and sticky rice was really delicious. When another 2 servers came and asked if we wanted to pack the left over fish, we had originally said no. When questioned we said it was way too much. One of the servers then mentioned that it could have been possible to order half the fish. WHAT?! We were not told this when we ordered it. We were not told this when we told original server that the fish was too large and that we wanted a smaller one. We were told it had been killed for us , the end. After being incredibly upset and explaining our situation to another server and telling them about the finger nail. They finally came back with a $30 gift card as an apology. For 9 people, and a $540 meal, that's a small gift for such a horrible experience. Wish I would've taken a photo of the nail as proof but I was so disgusted that I didn't want to look at it. Came here on recommendation and had an amazing dim sum lunch at Haiyi Seafood restaurant. We ordered bbq pork buns, scallop chun fun, beef tendon, eggplant shrimp. The soy sauce chicken was nicely done very tender and moist. Service fast and friendly. Lots of options for tea flavours. Only thing that stood out was the manager seemed standoffish and not conversational. Seems out of place wit the atmosphere and rest of the staff. The servers were definitely more friendly and engaged in their work with the customers. Overall good quality dim sum lunch. Would like to come back to try the dinner. read more

I'm not sure how this place received mediocre reviews, but I felt that it was much better than Yelp says it is for an HK Seafood restaurant. We had both dim sum and dinner there, so here is my review for the dim sum. The dim sum was really good. The rice rolls were good, the skin wasn't too thick and the fillings were just right. The fish fillet porridge was so good with the Chinese donut. The kids loved the BBQ pork buns and other pastry desserts, along with traditional HK dim sum items. Service was great and definitely didn't feel ignored despite a busy dining room during lunch. I can tell a lot of locals and regulars go here. Dinner was just as good as my dim sum experience. We didn't have dinner here on the same day, but the level of service and food quality was really good. We had a long cod prepared 3 ways and each way was amazing. I'm still eating the leftovers today lol the soy sauce chicken is worth it, and the other dishes we ordered (pork jowl with string beans, beef broccoli, dried scallop with egg white fried rice, yam leaves in fermented tofu sauce) all really good. I'm eating all of this the next day lol The dining room probably fits about 80-90 people, not the biggest but big enough. Wait staff accommodate us despite a last minute party of 8. They seated us right away. Prices were more than fair, because the same meal would cost 1.5-2x in Richmond or Vancouver at the more well known spots (I had a meal the night before at a popular Richmond spot for 2.5x more, and I wasn't as satisfied). Parking lot is very small, you're better off on the residential side streets. I think a 4.5 star is my max rating, but I'll leave a 5 to get the ratings up on this place! read more

I've driven by this place often. 'Hidden Gem", imo since you can blow past this place with the small parking lot out front. AND it's been around for years. Do know why I didn't come in sooner. This will change. Find parking on the Main street in this area could prove challenging, or just go into the 'hidden' pay park lot behind the restaurant, less than 2-3 houses away. You can walk off some-of-the meal when leaving. I will say just one thing that will get you there. Asian Comfort food and seafood. Winning combo imo. The simple "pick-your-flavour (favourite) items" menu keeps things easy; AND best of all 'early bird and departure' discounts. Im NOT going to complain. What to recommend... I came here recently as part of a large weeknight group dinner. It's a small-ish place, but surprisingly even on a Wed night it was full. I'm sure it gets even busier on the weekends. Anyone who knows me knows I love my family-style Cantonese dinners! They're my go-to for special occasions and I always appreciate a good meal with fresh seafood, meat, and veggies. It was my first time at Haiyi. Overall I thought the dishes were good but not amazing, and my favorites were the fresh seafood. Here's what we had (** mark my favorites): Fried tofu **Squab **Russian king crab cooked 3 ways - steamed, stirfried, and the shell was served with fried rice topped with seafood curry **Ling cod cooked 2 ways - casserole with tofu and pork, stirfried fillet with peas Curry shrimp Chicken stuffed with glutinous rice Stir fried beans Stir fried beef and eggplant Sweet and sour pork **Dessert (complimentary): black sesame pudding, small almond cookies, osmanthus jelly We ordered way too much food, and our table had plenty of leftovers to take home. We came here for the abalone as it was highly recommended. Ordered the premium Japanese abalone per person and holy molly! It was delicious. The sauce was perfectly flavoured and the restaurant added some very fresh fish maw and pea tip to accompany this dish. The abalone was cooked perfectly and every bite was super satisfying. We then had the groupa fish made in 2 styles. 1) steamed Cantonese style with a very delicious steamed fish sauce atop with finely chopped ginger and green onion 2) stir fry sliced groupa with medley veggies. Recently referred by a family friend to try this restaurant, as the Chef is supposedly from Taste Good Seafood Restaurant on Marine Drive, one of his signature dish is the Crispy Chicken with Sticky Rice, he is also famous for his Double Boiled Chicken and Pig Tripe Soup. As we passed by the neighbourhood, we stopped by to try their Dim Sum lunch, we came at around 12:30pm on a Thursday and the dining room was semi busy, we got a table right away. Dim Sum menu is your regular fare, nothing jumped out. All the dim sum were done with above average standard, I would say this would be good alternative to come as it would be easier to get a table more so then others around the area. After looking around for other items they are promoting: such as Sea Bass in a Hot Pot, Fresh Lobster and of course their Crispy Chicken with Sticky Rice, Haiyi will be on my list for a Chinese Dinner gathering with friends. Christmas dim sum for us! First time for dim sum and everything was as expected. Fresh Chinese doughnuts wrapped in rice noodles was good (not overnight ones). The shrimp rice noodles were tasty. Their turnip rice cake could have been pan fried a bit more so it gets that nice crispness to contrast the creamy inside. Deep fried shrimp salad rolls were crispy and mayo-y on the inside. One of the better ones that I've tried. How the har gow? Delicious! Big pieces of shrimp with a thin rice wrap. All in all, a solid dim sum experience! read more

Came here for a family dinner. Parking is available in the lot in front of the building, as well as on the side streets. The restaurant itself is fairly spacious. They have partitions for private events as well. Looks like they've renovated recently. Staff were friendly and professional. Food was overall quite tasty. No complaints. Worst chinese restaurant i've been to in the lower mainland. Tried a variety of dishes, from fried rice, to sweet and sour pork chops, to egg tart. The fried things were not crispy, and the beef chow fun tasted like noodles mixed in soy sauce. Egg tarts were the only decent item. Also a very loud environment. read more

This is an update to my previous review. I had to change the star rating from 4 to 3 stars. My second time going there was not as good as my first time. There is some inconsistency in the chef's culinary skill. Guess it depends on his mood. Also it does take a long time for the food to come out. Guess I won't be going there any more. ------- I am surprised about this place. You really have to try their specialty crab. Its very flavourful. I would say the rating would be a 4 stars due to flavor and reason why its not a 5 is because the meat was over cooked (or maybe its just so with the crab we ordered). It's definitely getting there to be a 5. Also if you dine in here monday to friday, the crab is $20 each. The other dishes we ordered: Braised spareribs Pumpkin + Seafood Soy Sauce Chicken Every dish was very tasty. I really liked it. Very authentic and the chef is really skilled in his culinary art. The restaurant is kind of small. So its not like they have a lot of tables. Have to come early and make sure you make a reservation. As well, parking is limited in their parking lot. Not bad for Dim Sum in this neighbourhood with good prices and foo that isn't too oily or salty! We were glad to see such a large menu and ordered both dim sum as well as kitchen dishes. Really enjoyed their steamed chicken buns (heavy on the ginger) and matcha egg yolk buns where the sweetness brought out that matcha essence. Their rice rolls, sui may and taro puff are all as per usual while the pork and egg congee was flavourful and thick! They have a roast duck with chinese spaghetti in soup special but it was disappointing to see that the duck pieces were small and fatty. The black pepper beef was the oiliest of all dishes but came in a large portion alongside eggplant and onions. We also got a deep fried fish fillet and xo sauce pan fried turnip cake which was soft in the centre and both these items were a low price for large portions. I came here with my hubby's family for dinner. The seating pretty cramped and same group of staffs working there. We ordered some dishes and just average of food. Peking duck - skin sliced pretty thin but it was't crispy. Pekin duck in 2 ways - it's good but not great. Winter melon soup - the soup slightly at sweet side. Lobster - it's mediocre Scallops and vegetables - it's so greasy and frozen scallops tasted. Beef steak - it's the worst. The beef tasted stale and weird. Sweet and sour pork - it's ok. This place was not to bad in terms of their food. They were kind enough to try to accommodate us with our noodle request but missed the target with the type of noodle they used. I appreciated the effort. It is more on the pricer side. We were craviNg for the small deep fried silver fish. They do not serve that during dinner time. I believe it was just for morning. They do have underground parking but it didn't look as safe to park after a day of shopping. So there is outside parking where it is visible. Came here on a weekday around 11:30 AM. Since there were only two of us, we received a table right away. The restaurant felt really crowded especially with the tables squished together. Our table was literally two inches away from another table. It was quite uncomfortable. We ordered a total of 6 items: radish cakes with XO sauce, BBQ pork pastry, beef tendons, chicken feet, shrimp dumplings, and BBQ duck in vermicelli. I didn't enjoy the radish cakes with XO sauce because they tasted really stale. Flavours were not incorporated well. I definitely had better elsewhere. The BBQ pork pastry was cold when I think it should have been at least warm. As a result, it was hard when I bit into it. The skins of shrimp dumplings were stuck together and tore as soon as I tried to take one. So I ended up eating the skin and the shrimp separately. The BBQ duck was dry and barely had any meat in it (though the vermicelli itself was good). The beef tendons were tender and the chicken feet were flavourful. It is my mom's bday and I let my mom picked the place to have dinner. We made a reservation for 7:30pm for 5 people on a January Saturday. We arrived at 7:21pm and sat down at 7:30pm. My mom picked one of the set menu for 6 people (yes, we have 5 people, but what mom wants - gets. $208) and ordered at 7:35pm. The restaurant is pretty small (10 tables that can sit 4-6 ppl, and 4 large tables). Kitchen service: 1st course (peking duck) arrived at 7:46pm. 2nd course (soup) arrived at 7:53pm, 3rd course (duck meat) arrived at 7:58pm, 3rd course (lobster) arrived at 8:12pm, 4th course ([supposed to be scallops only, but then they changed it to 3 kinds of seafood without informing us] with you choy) arrived at 8:20pm, 5th course (sweet and sour pork) arrived at 8:22pm, 6th course (we changed it to dried scallops and egg whites fried rice) arrived at 8:32pm, the 7th course (dessert - we changed it to ginger egg pudding) arrived at 9:05pm. Customer service: the servers appear to be nicer than other comparable restaurant. Portion, taste and price: the portion is about the same size as other places. The taste is pretty good. Great dimsum place. Love the food here. Highly recommend reserving as it's hard to get a spot unless you're lucky or you're just two people. I would recommend it as it's got good decor and good food. Their congee and the Chinese dough is good though congee noodle house is better. Their rice noodles wrapped with food is not as good and I would not recommend the scallop one that is weirdly made. Their Phoenix buns and BBQ porc pastries are awesome and I'll be back for more! They are the best! Love the crunchy outside and sweet coconut touch on the outside and the little bit of BBQ porc on the inside. Just so lovely that I ordered another plate. You should get the BBQ porc pastries as well because they infuse it with lemon and tastes divine! Other things such as dumplings were pretty good. They have specials such as boodle dishes and even walked around w yummy looking durian mochis but this wasn't a popular item for the table but I will be back for it! Small limited parking in their lot or else free street parking on main and on the inner roads. You can even walk for ice cream dessert or a second meal of sushi if you're still hungry. Average Hong Kong style service where even if you speak directly to servers they will not acknowledge you. They know how to work in tunnel vision. Waving doesn't help. Call them out and tell them directly what you want. They will refuse to split the bill more than two ways. I think the server wasn't very alert or half sleeping because he should just have said that it's fine if you use debit or cash because he tried to feed us a sad story about how the companies charge them 2$ per transaction. I know how those things work and they charge 2.5% visa, 1.25% mc and 0.5% debit give or take. You're a fancy seafoood restaurant. I don't know if they just take everything in cash but he could have said that. If the buns weren't that good I wouldn't be back. But I'll be back. With cash haha. Highly recommend coming here for dimsum la. Just bring them cash. I heard the king crab is good there too. read more

Haiyi at Main and 32nd is a nice addition to the South Main dim sum options which now boasts King's Cuisine at 29th and of course the well-known Sun Sui Wah at 23rd. Haiyi fits perfectly in between these two, price-wise. While King's Cuisine is on the lower end and Sun Sui Wah is higher, Haiyi is about in the middle. A smaller restaurant, the bright windows and newer decorations make it an upgrade from King's. There is a parking lot out front (~8 spots), and also underground parking for the plaza. 32nd street is home to an elementary school, so street parking can be difficult during school days. You'll find all of your standard dim sum plates here, but here are a few notes to help you decide what to order: - The shrimp dumplings (ha gow) are quite big, and have a more ginger taste rather than being just salty. - We always get a larger rice plate in addition to dim sum, and our favorite is the half-cream/half-tomato sauce rice plate (fook zhou chow fan, or yin yang fan). $16.80 may seem like a lot, but you get a lot for what you pay for! - One unique dish at Haiyi is the green tea flowing custard bun (look cha liu sa bao). We get it every time and it delivers on taste and quality! Overall, I'm a fan of Haiyi as a neighborhood dim sum spot. We came here to celebrate my cousins birthday. We came to this restaurant before under a different name and different owner but decided to try out the new ownership. When we arrived, the hostess didn't have our reservation of 13 in their books. Luckily we had an early dinner because this place was packed and full by the time 7pm hit. I had high expectations for this place. We ordered a set dinner and dinner was fine, service was also good and they were friendly but I felt like I was looking for a "wow" factor during dinner and none of my family members experienced that so it was a little disappointing. We also got free range soya sauce chicken and it was cut and served to us but still raw. They politely took it back and when it returned we noticed a drum stick from the chicken was missing. We didn't say anything but again we were a little disappointed. Don't get me wrong, dinner wasn't bad, it was just ok but I've had better. I came here with my family and relatives for dinner on a Sunday. We had a 7:00pm reservation. When we arrived, we were not seated and had to wait outside. We used their free WiFi and were checking our social media accounts (millennials be like??) while we waited for our seats. 45 minutes later, we were still not seated for a table of 10 people, which was very upsetting. When we were finally seated, the Chinese restaurant, itself, was very small. It was crowded and the tables were somewhat squished together. We ordered the chicken with sticky rice dish and other dishes that I don't know the names of. After we ordered, our food came very quickly. The dishes that we ordered were all mediocre and I have had better. At the end, they gave us dessert, which was Chinese red bean sweet soup (Hong dou tang shui). The desserts that Chinese restaurants usually provided at the end of dinner was what I've always looked forward to the most. However, the Chinese red bean sweet soup at this place did not taste great and was a bit sour. This was most likely the dried tangerine peels that they've added into the soup, which was a key ingredient used in most Chinese dishes to add flavor. Even if the dried tangerine peel was a key ingredient, I thought the soup could've went without it or this place did not store the dried tangerine peels properly. In the end, I don't think I'm coming back here for dinner. read more

First time to this dim sum restaurant on Main St. I believe it's relatively new. We went around 12pm and there wasn't a lineup so we were seated immediately. The restaurant looked clean. Seating appeared to be a bit crammed as they put more tables and seats out, thus making your navigation to the washroom a little tricky. The food was average priced for dim sum restaurants. The food was pretty good and packed a lot of flavour without it being too greasy or salty. I especially enjoyed the truffle and pork siu mai they had. This local restaurant is very popular with the local neighbourhood folks. They have some unique dim sum dishes here, like the Truffle Pork Dumplings (燒賣) and Matcha steam buns with salty egg filling. So we could hear everyone's conversations also the table next to us had 2 small children watching YouTube on their iPads on full volume. Now to the food...we ordered their famous chilli crab with vermicelli! I'm not a big outside crab eater...find it way too difficult to do without looking like a complete savage so I only had a couple pieces before I gave up. The crab was fried very nicely. Great bold flavours coated each piece very well! The vermicelli underneath it was the star of the dish in my opinion. It had all the sweet crab flavour and super aromatic from all the garlic and onion! No wonder everyone Also ordered it. We also got the sweet and sour pork. I have to say it's probably the best sweet and sour pork I've ever had! The pork was lightly battered and I really mean lightly! Not the usual mouthful of flour and a tiny bit of meat it was all meat! They also had some lychees in the mix with pineapple and peppers as well which was a nice touch. Lastly we ordered a steamed egg tofu with seafood (sink mountain tofu lol...direct translation of the words) I didn't really like this one as much as the ingredients were a little different than I'm used to. It didn't have the cut up Gai LAN stalks and it was a brown sauce instead of the usual clear sauce. The taste was fine just not the way I've known it to be so it threw me off. Family style with lots of round tables, we were only 4 people but they sat us at a large table 'cause we were early and they knew that our visit wasn't going to be long which it wasn't. I ordered some of the pork cakes and small dishes (all pictures on my Instagram). The overall flavor combinations weren't there and I have had other Chinese foods with better flavors incorporated. This is not to say that I didn't enjoy since it was all about the company, however, this wouldn't be a go to place I would come back. Craving dim sum and decided to try this place as it recently opened and is close to home. Very disappointed with the quality of food and the service. Would not recommend. We ordered a variety of dishes and noticed that in general the food was lacking in seasoning. Wrappers on the steamed dumplings broke apart when picked up, fillings for the dumplings lacked flavour, steamed chicken feet had a very fishy taste and clams were gritty and not fresh. Their other dishes like steamed spareribs, shirmp spring rolls, egg tarts and fried dumplings were all very mediocre. Presentation of the food is lacking as well. Service is was friendly but many mistakes were made with our order. Brought the wrong congee and when corrected apologized but never brought the proper congee. Our Sui Mai was forgotten as well. Would recommend going elsewhere for dim sum. Lots of other places in Vancouver with better dim sum and at a better value. Will not be returning. Parking can be difficult too. Will need to park in the residential areas. read more
