I went for a fairly good size takeout order on 05/21/2024. Son and wife visited HAKUYA a few days prior. Said it was very good. I have not been to this place for several years, but I must say that it hasn't changed much. I can't say that the atmosphere reeks of quality. It could stand a bit of upgrading to convey a better sense of quality. Nevertheless, I placed an order for several rolls and NIGRI, plus an appetizer. Everything with the exception of the NIGRI, was placed in a fairly large aluminum tray. Pretty well packed together, making it difficult to extract pieces of the various rolls. FOOD FLAVOR and execution: - - - - Everything we ordered was very tasty, once we managed to get roll pieces into our mouths. The sad downside of the experience was primarily, very poor execution of everything, with the exception of the NIGRI, which was probably the best part of the meal. Good quality and taste plus very nice large pieces. All of the rolls were basically a disaster. Couldn't even get most roll sections out of the tray, even with a fork, without the entire thing falling apart. I have to say, I have never experienced this sort of issue at any sushi house I have visited anywhere in the country. It was more or less a big tray of "mush". I have to say that the person (not oriental) making the order, needs to go back to school and discover the important elements needed to execute fine sushi. Sadly, this ain't it!!. AXPERT read more

Thank you yelpers because I would have never tried Hakuya if it wasn't for you... I typically avoid sushi restaurants in run-down strip malls with pics of unappetizing looking sushi in the windows. However, I was willing to give a 4.5 star rated sushi restaurant a try. I can't comment on dinner here, but lunch was super affordable and appetizing. The lovely Candice G and I each ordered 2 rolls that came with miso soup AND a salad. Gotta love lunch specials at sushi restaurants. Our waiter even brought out some sort of complimentary potato balls. All that food for 2 people came to less than $20. Score! The sushi itself was fresh and may just be among the best sushi I've experienced in the North Shore. Our waiter was also lovely seemed to notice we were Hakuya novices so I'm guessing they get a lot of regulars. I may become one myself when in the area. read more

I went to this restaurant with my Family and we were 30 minutes early to the store opening without realizing but the server was extremely nice about it and welcomed us in to serve us. She was nice to my kids and made small talk with all of us. We don't know her name but she was tall and had glasses on so I wanted to write this review to compliment her service. After living in the city for the last 3 years (where sushi spots were everywhere), I've been looking for a go-to place for sushi and other Asian dishes near my home, now that I'm up in the burbs. And by golly, I think I found it! I did try their sushi rolls before which I remember being tasty, and not too much rice (too much rice means too little fish!). But I will write more specifically about two of their lunch specials which I had today with my dad. I ordered Chicken Katsu, he ordered the bibimbop which comes in a hot stone bowl (best way to have bibimbop, in my opinion). They serve a small salad and miso soup before the actual meals come out. Like I said, I had the chicken katsu, and it is AWESOME!!! I've had other katsu before but the coating they use is crisped to perfection. You hear a literal crunch! The sauce on top of the katsu was also delicious. It has a subtle sweetness to it. I'm used to seeing the tonkatsu sauce that Asian groceries sell, but was pleasantly surprised that they had a different sauce. I should have asked if it was a pre made thing or if they make their own special sauce. My Dad ordered the bibimbop. He's an older Korean man who's hard to please, esp with Korean food. But even my Dad said the bibimbop was great. Perfect amount of rice and veggies. He ordered his with beef and he said he was surprised how tender the beef was! I tried a bite - and I concur, it was awesome! They do not serve a lot of side dishes like the Korean restaurants (ex. Sansoo Gapsan in Morton grove) do, but that's okay. They did give us kimchi and a pickled radish that I really enjoyed. And I usually don't like kimchi! The owner is behind the sushi bar, and the servers are really nice! Atmosphere is great. My friend and I came here on a Wednesday night. We ordered the N5, which was some nigiri with 2 chef rolls; the thunder roll, and the white christmas roll. All the food was delicious and the fish was fresh! The sauces weren't too overbearing on the rolls and the nigiri was decently fresh. Our meals also came with miso soup and salad. The restaurant is in a small plaza with a martial arts center and dance center. However, parking is generous. There were also a bunch of plants in front of the restaurant, which I found a bit out of place. The owners of the place are Korean, not Japanese! Don't be fooled! Haha. However, service from the wait staff was very attentive and I have no complaints! I'd like to come here again. read more

Not fancy schmancy but just good food n a lot of it!! Party of 24 so we were seated in the back newly remodel room. We preordered 4 platters of sushi rolls n nigiri a couple days in advance n ordered a bunch off the menu for the kitchen items when we got there. Although it's mostly your typical Japanese sushi place, it was nice to see some traditional Korean items on the menu as well. Kids really enjoyed their udon noodles and chicken katsu. If you have a noodle lovin kid or a chicken nugget/fried chicken loving kid these are good choices. Shrimp tempura was another fave of the kids. Had to order more. They also have tempura veggies if you have veggie lovin kids. I ordered a veganized dol sot bibimbop (stone bowl mixed rice with veggies, no egg) with tofu. The sauce was really good!! I'm usually not a sauce kinda gal but I really liked this one. Perfect balance of sweet, tangy n spicy! Everyone walked out full n seemed to enjoy their meals. I also noticed in their window they do lunch specials and it sounds like a great deal for quite a bit of food! Best part of this places is that it's a mom n pop place and you can tell they work really hard to make good food for their guests! Folks who follow me know I am a sushi snob. So I am not comparing this place to Momotaro or any of the super high end places that I frequently go to. Further, if you know me, you know I am usually all about the Nigiri and dont dig the "americanized rolls or putting fish in sauces. BUT that being said, there was an item called "Super Spicy Tuna Roll and Super Spicy Salmon Roll" that caught my eye. Soooooo.... being a "SPICE WHO-RE" I could not resist and was VERY HAPPY when I found I needed my napkin for more than merely wiping my mouth, (meaning I needed it for my eyes and nose.) This roll was very good, and it was pretty damn spicy as far as any japanese roll I have ever had. They list the item as having their own "homemade " hot sauce on it, it is NOT some bullshit sriracha sauce and mayonnaise. So just to test out the nigiri, they have a standard selection, but nothing I really found out of sight. No Uni, or unusual fish, they have to serve white suburbanite folks here LOL. So I tried the maguro. I was impressed that the nigiri was painted with their own sauce by the sushi chef, as opposed to be simply laid on some rice, so a good sign. Further, as to the cut of the fish, It was NOT a gob of meat like some some places catering to Americans. It was as it should be - bite sized. The fish was cut well in terms of size and thickness, the only thing I noticed is that it was cut cross-grain, which I guess gives it more texture, but for maguro I personally prefer smooth cut. But all in all very good presentation. The rice was also good, I could taste the texture of the grains, it was not over cooked, nor under cooked. It was not tasteless, it was good, I personally felt a dash or two more of rice vinegar, sake, and salt/soy would be useful, but than again, it could be taste based on clientele. Was looking forward to some sushi rolls, but definitely left disappointed tonight. Came here my brother from another and was seated right away. Now to amateur night. I ordered a california roll, Philadelphia roll, spicy salmon roll, and shrimp tempura roll. First and foremost why would you use steamed rice on the rolls. (Strike 1) Every time i went to pick up a roll with my chop sticks, the rolls would start falling apart.(strike 2) They added sauces on top of the rolls that are not suppose to come on top of rolls. I understand there doing that to spice up the rolls and do something different to separate them from other sushi spots, but thats not a good idea. If i ordered a Philadelphia roll i don't want a sweet sauce on top of my roll. Thats not what i ordered smh.(strike3) my best friend bit into a roll and spit it out because the fish wasn't cut right and had a ligament in the fish. I never seen that in my life and was mortified. (Strike 4) we noticed people coming in and getting turned away while the resteraunt had plenty of seating, so we asked our waitress why people were being turned away. She replied that they only make 3 batches of rice and don't like to cook a lot of rice because they wind up throwing it out. I don't understand the logic on that when rice is dirt cheap lol. I guess they rather lose customer then cook more rice and just throw it away. They literally turned down 10 customers tonight, which is unheard of over rice that isn't expensive. Overall, it was a disaster and the sushi was real bad. I would never come here again and this place needs to step it up. I had high expectation going off the reviews, but i guess people in Chicago don't know good sushi. read more

I've been hearing a lot of praise for Hakuya lately, so I decided to treat myself to their lunch special on Sept. 29. Good decision!! I ordered a California roll and a spider roll by phone around noon, and they were ready for pickup in 15 minutes. The restaurant is taking COVID precautions, which prevent customers from walking beyond a table right at the entrance. My food was bagged and ready to go when I arrived, so with the swipe of a credit card, I was on my way. I really enjoyed both rolls. The spider roll was seasoned with a delicious sauce that had just the right amount of heat, and I alternated every piece or two of that with California roll pieces, which acted sort of as a palate cleanser. My meal came to around $8.50 with tax, before tip. It was a nice workday treat, and I'd recommend it. I hope they will consider using different packaging in the future -- I'd love to see a recyclable or compostable container instead of a styrofoam box. read more

My pit stop at Hakuya came at the recommendation of a picky sushi eater, so I guess I shouldn't have been so surprised at how good the food turned out to be. It was among the best that I've had, and while I am not exactly a connoisseur of the delicacy, it is a taste that I have been developing for the past couple years. I opted for the fried Philadelphia and spicy tuna rolls, both of which were excellent, but it was the Philly roll that impressed me the most. A couple times in recent memory, fried rolls have been overdone and too crispy, but these were perfect - the flavors were not sacrificed for the sake of being slightly cooked. It was a casual experience and the staff was very friendly, I think everyone who was working greeted me and the head chef chatted with me for a bit. It appears that he is quite amicable with a majority of his customers as most of the people who arrived after me were greeted as if they were close friends or family. Glad I had the chance to sample Hakuya and will absolutely return if I'm ever in the vicinity again! read more

I ordered for delivery and everything came on time. I got the dragon rolls, spider rolls, And shrimp rolls, Tokyo nacho, and chicken udon. I thought the chicken udon was the stir fried udon I saw in one of the pictures but it was actually a soup but it's okay I just take the udon out and put sesame oil and soy sauce over it. The bf and I were trying to find a decent sushi place in the BG area and came across Hakuya Sushi. We opted for this establishment due to the high rating compared to other sushi spots in the area. I went in not expecting much as I already have my sushi faves, but I left room to be surprised - shame that I wasn't. I'm not really sure what theme they are going for here when it comes to decor, but when you first enter the restaurant, the front half of the restaurant is set up like a small tiki bar, only where the bar would be, the kitchen was placed. We were led to the back dining room which was VERY dark and cold and the tables and chairs reminded me of what you would find at a hotel banquet hall, nothing special. I was rather disappointed that they had opted to board up all of the windows as this room was just way too dark, and not even in a romantic way. Anyway, I ordered the sweet potato roll, less cream cheese and the asparagus roll to share, and the cinco de Mayo roll for myself (which I would recommend if you request light sauce as it has a good mix of flavors that compliment each other well between the tuna, salmon, shrimp and then the lemon wedge and fresh jalapeño slice on top), and the bf ordered some shrimp tempura type roll that had cream cheese that I had no interest in so I'm not even sure what it was called (sorry). The four rolls cost us approximately $42, which I think is a bit pricey for the quality, but I'll give the proud owner a pass. The owner/head chef came out to our table to greet us after we ordered our food and his jokes were amusing. We probably saw him more than our actual waitress. When the food was brought out, I was quite shocked at the amount of sauce thrown onto each roll. I mean, these rolls were DOUSED in teriyaki and special sauces. I'm all for some delicious sauce, but I'd also like to be able to taste my food - kind of disappointed. Overall, the food seemed fresh, but the rolls were cut into ridiculously large bites (we survived). And I was a bit taken aback by the fact that both the waitress AND owner/head chef were kind of rude to us for not being able to finish our food. I apologized numerous times, but I couldn't take the rolls home with me, as they would have been pure mush by the next day due to all of the sauce. And for the record, there were probably only 9 pieces left out of the four rolls AND we both finished the complimentary miso soup and salad (which was also doused in dressing, and included a white dressing PLUS the ginger dressing - was quite interesting). Overall, if you go in with mediocre expectations and if you like sauce, and I mean REALLY like sauce, I'm sure you will have an amazing time. I however, am not sure if I will give this place a second shot after how the waitress pretty much turned her nose to us after we politely declined taking our leftovers home. read more

The atmosphere, food, and service was amazing at Hakuya Sushi and provided a very welcoming environment and left my girlfriend and I very happy at the end of the night. Before our order arrived we received a small bowl of soup and some light salad which was a surprised because these items are normally an extra but it was nice to receive a small taste to shorten our wait. During our time there, the chef making the sushi was constantly making conversation and jokes during our wait for the food making the place seem more friendly and open. He provided us recommendations and helped clarify items on the menu which ultimately helped decide our order for the night. We ordered two specials rolls, The Mango Gaga Roll and The King Dragon Roll. The Mango Gaga tastes way better than it sounds, at first one might wonder how the mango mixes well with sushi but assure you it does, I highly recommend this! The mango in sushi mixes surprisingly well and provides a subtle sweet flavor to it. The King Dragon Roll tasted very good! The fish within the roll was very fresh and made perfectly! Price was very reasonable too, everything was priced to exactly what you would expect, ended up paying around $30 total for these two items! Definitely would go here again and highly recommend to a lover of sushi and good food! read more
