Chef and owner Bruce Lee (that's freal his name. What a cool name) was so hospitable and kind! He just took over the restaurant three days ago and I'm so glad our first time eating here was with him. He came to our table after we got our food to make sure everything was to our liking. We got the Sushi Omakase and they were accommodating to my fish egg allergy and checked with me about some of the proposed sushi to make sure I was ok to eat it. The fish was so buttery, fresh, and delicious. I am usually not an uni fan, but the taste and quality of the one they served me made me one! Each sushi piece they chose for us was an exciting and tasty experience. Our server, Stella, was also soooooo nice! She made us feel super welcome and waited to ask if we wanted her to take our picture until we got the sushi that she thought would make for a really nice photo. Haha! Based on the reviews of this place I was really hoping it would become my next sushi spot. Unfortunately the quality of fish did not live up to the reviews. Some of the pieces were very tasty and practically melted in my mouth but over half of the sushi was chewy and didn't taste fresh. Also, while I appreciate the different sauces the chefs put on the fish, sometimes they didn't always pair well. Hanabi is an unassuming spot located in a strip mall that has parking. There are only about 3-4 people working, 2 of them being sushi chefs. We had to wait 15 minutes to get the bill, pay, and there was an item on there that we didn't receive. The staff was extremely friendly they were just busy. I discovered this place since it was only 3 blocks from where I live. Once I entered, I was immediately greeted and seated at the bar. The menu isn't an exhaustive list of items to choose from. I ordered the $65 set and had a wonderful conversation with the owner and the head chef. Chef Jay, who took care of me that night has over 20 years of experience and is very skilled/knowledgeable about sushi. The set that I had included 2 side dishes (their mushrooms are amazing!) and around 5-6 individual pieces of Sushi with a chefs choice and topped off with a fantastic kiwi dessert. Each piece was presented to me with a small background of information of what type of fish I was about to devour. The Head Chef is very friendly and is open to any feedback in case something didn't taste right. The waitress is also very quick and friendly regarding any questions I had about the menu. I went around 6:30PM on a Saturday night and still found parking in their little lot that they had. Wasn't super busy at the time that I went, but groups started to pour in after I left. The tables were all clean and the chef was at the sushi bar preparing the amazing dishes that I experienced today. The customer service was phenomenal! Our server was very cordial and he made sure we were well taken care of. He gave us our sushi paper, which we used to order our items. He also made sure to check on us at various time periods to see if we were okay and if we had any questions. There was a point, when he told us that food might come out a bit slower due to another group's big order. I actually liked being notified of that because it doesn't give me the bad impression of "Oh they are taking forever". Since I was told that ahead of time, I was content with waiting a bit longer. It also meant that we can digest our food more. Amazing server indeed! The food was out of this world! My favorite dishes of the night were the Snow Crab Handroll, Seared Bluefin Tuna Nigiri (ordered double), the Tataki Roll, and honestly everything we ordered. There was no one favorite dish because they were all prepared with finesse. It was definitely an experience that I would love to come back and try the other dishes that I did not get to try. Overall, Hanabi was an amazing find from Yelp. The ambiance, customer service, and food quality are the three components that will bring me back to this establishment in the future. Parking was bad at all. It is in a small plaza with plenty of parking space. If you are in a hurry, you can always order ahead of time and take it home, work, or wherever you need to be. But none of that matters the second you take your first bite. The fish is amazing and masterfully prepared. Scallops, fresh crab, toro, yellowtail--all mouthwatering and delicious. With a heavy heart, I have to update my original review only three months later. This was going to be my go to omakase place - Chef Jae is a magician. I went back two weeks ago and I learned that Chef Jae is no longer there (he quit a month ago) and that the omakase prices went up to $90 and $100. Didn't seem too alarming because I knew how wonderful it was before - wrong. The $100 omakase was egregiously offensive. The first red flag was the heavy front load of hot dishes. The pacing was terrible and we felt super full and on nothing but fried foods. Then the sushi part started and wow - I've never had badly cut fish, even at mid tier sushi restaurants. I got tendon stuck on my teeth with this course. And the rice? THE RICE? It was a hard square, pre-prepared - my high school sushi had better rice. In fact, it looked like most of the sushi dishes were pre-cut, which is tragic. We left before the courses were completed. We paid an astronomical amount for the worst quality sushi I've ever had at this price point. I really loved this place and I wanted it to succeed - told all my friends and family.
