I'd rather drive over the hill to eat at an authentic sushi place in San Mateo. Their daily menu on the chalkboard is old apparently. We had to ask for today's specials. The sashimi donburi is just at the ok level. Also didn't expect them to throw in egg rolls as "sashimi" lol. read more

I'm not a roll person so I can't comment there, but their omakase is not only an incredibly amazing deal (7 pieces for $33 or 15 for $55) but the selection is absolutely *chef's kiss* You have to get the "fish tacos" here; salmon, albacore, avocado, and an Asian-ish mango salsa on top of fried nori. $9 for 2 pieces but if I could eat just like 5-6 of these, I'd leave pretty happy. The best cuts for me were the hotate (scallop) and chuturo but truly, everything was fantastic. The service was lovely and didn't push us at all. We are a family of five and apparently they charge a 20% gratuity. Even though on the menu it states 18%. We weren't even asked if we wanted anything for 15 to 20 minutes. Their crunchy lobster roll was very offputting but they're Wagyu beef roll made up for it. Food service was extremely slow as well as getting the order incorrect. read more

Hands down, some of the best sushi my wife and I have ever had. A very unassuming place, but we thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Hangetsu Sushi. We sat at the bar with 2 musing chefs, but were extraordinarily polite and friendly. We ordered some garlic edamame as a start, and we contemplated ordering a second serving. The seasoning was a paste like consistency coating each pod and full of flavor. We were blown away. We then ordered maguro sashimi along with some hirami sashimi - this was the best fish we've ever put in our mouths. Hirami is typically served in rice wine vinegar to moderate the fishy flavor or it, but this fish didn't even need soy sauce. I even asked the chef if it was indeed hirami; it was silky, sweet, and mild. We also ordered the 49er roll which was sliced into perfect morsels with superb flavor. We ended the meal with a couple oyster shooters. Perfect ending to a perfect meal. We were also pleasantly surprised with the bill; while not cheap, we've paid way more for worse quality sushi plenty of times. Came here while on a trip with my husband for my 37th birthday. We were attracted to Hangetsu Sushi because the photos looked so good and it slapped. Our sushi chef made us a fantastic Omakase with real wasabi, which I'd never had. The Otoro sashimi was so good that I giggled when I ate it. The fat melted instantly in my mouth. Hands down the best sushi restaurant I've been to. Came here early morning, at opening time on a Saturday. There was not many people during the morning overall. The decor is pretty and minimalist overall. Nothing too dazzling. The restaurant is pretty spacious and there is also outdoor seating at the back patio. The food was amazing. Not only are the presentations just stunning but the food tasted so good. With such good tasting food, I had to order a second/third time. All of the dishes are tasty but my favorite were the fish tacos. The balance between all the different flavors and the way it melts in your mouth is too good to pass up. The service here was absolutely amazing. The waitress was super accommodating and kind. She addressed everything we needed and joked with my table. Even while working alone on the floor, she was able to address my table and a couple of others as more people came in. This place was amazing. I am definitely coming back! read more

I have to say, I love this place on the coast. The staff is always helpful, kind, and happy. The food is amazing and fresh! I highly recommend the Midnight Oysters, wagyu nigiri, tempura, sunset roll as well as the lion king roll. It does get busy in the evenings but the noise levels are not nearly as bad as you would expect. Making a reservation on the weekends is not a bad idea and I'll keep coming here for sure for all their options as I slowly make my way through their menu. read more

Maybe I am spoiled by the bay area's extensive and high quality sushi restaurants. But I had high hopes for Hangetsu based on the reviews but my experince was rather disappointing. Came here on a Sat night around 5:30pm and the service was great! We were promptly seated and orders taken. The menu had a nice selection of appetizers, rolls and nigiris. We ordered the oysters, chu-toro nigiri, o toro nigiri, Uni nigiri, Fuji Yama roll and more! The oysters were okay, the ponzu sauce overpowered the entire oyster and we couldn't taste anything beside ponzu. I would recommend putting it as a side for customers to add onto the oysters themselves. The Fuji Yama roll was good! But the Nigiris left alot to desire. The fish selections and uni tasted fresh! But the rice was not good. The rice was dry and no essence of sushi rice was detected: vinegar, etc. It made the over nigiri dishes very bland and did not enhance or bring out the flavors of each fish. read more

Tldr: their menu describes certain rolls as containing real snow crab (and they charge a higher price for it) but they sneakily use imitation crab while hoping customers won't notice. ----- I ordered one of their most expensive rolls--the Fuji Yama--in part because the menu said it was made with real snow crab (I hate imitation crab). When I got my roll and had my first bite, I could immediately tell it was imitation crab. I asked our server, and she confirmed it was imitation. I then told her that wasn't what was on the menu/what I paid for... she talked to management and said they would give 10% off the roll. I told her no, I'm not eating this roll and it's not what i ordered, which got them to eventually take it off the bill. But yeah, long story short is that they charge higher prices for listing real crab on the menu, but then try to sneakily use imitation crab instead. This is highly unethical and just not OK. I bet you most people are not aware that this happens to them when they order from this restaurant. It's not OK to be serving raw fish and secretly swapping listed ingredients out for cheaper ingredients--gross!!! Makes you question what else they are doing to the food that customers are unaware of. Secondarily: I'm shocked this place has such high reviews. The fish did not taste fresh at all--to the point that I'm hoping I don't end up getting sick later. read more

This is easily the best place to get sushi in the bay area. The sushi is very fresh and is cut right at the bar area so you can see how your food is prepared. You can find parking with ease and the restaurant is never packed. The inside is a darker design with nice seats and decorated with asian style art. Great new restaurant! The menu has a ton of options, including ramen and other hot entrees. We ordered a variety of rolls, including the Kobe Beef, Firecracker, Veggie Dragon and Lion King. We also had the tempura and edamame appetizers. All of the food was tasty, though the Kobe Beef roll was probably a favorite. The tempura was excellent too. The staff was incredibly friendly, even during a packed dinner service. I'm actually surprised how smoothly our experience was despite opening so recently. Amazing fresh food--my kids are Japanese foodies, and we all thought it was spectacular. Beef tataki great flavor, omakase 7 piece was served with fresh wasabi, varied, excellent preparation, age dashi tofu texture and sauce was excellent. Just some interesting looking cuts of salmon for the nigiri and and some strange renditions of common dishes. The kaki fry had a nice light breading but was served in a pool of dashi broth - similar to how agedashi tofu is prepared. And the soft shell crab had a crunchier panko breading and was served with tonkatsu sauce vs. a ponzu sauce. It was also missing 3 legs, lol. Although the waitress was pretty nice here the service wasn't the greatest. I got two rolls that both had raw fish and the fish didn't taste fresh at all and it was served room temperature. I also did get the veggie tempura which was delicious and so was the shrimp tempura! But I would stay away from raw fish all together!
