Ive been coming to Hanks since 2021 (Sherman Oaks location) and was so glad when the burbank one opened. Bagels are so tasty. Rosemary seasalt is my favorite. The staff are always on top of things and are pleasant. The one ding is that EVERY time I've ordered hot coffee (many, many times) it seems like the lids don't fit the cup correctly and I end up with hot coffee all over my hands. read more

I agree with the other reviews saying the bagels are hard to chew. While I appreciate that there's a lot of stuff that comes in the bagel, it does get pretty messy. Once you walk in you can instantly smell the goodness of the bagels. There's very limited seating outside, and I mean limited. I have always driven by this place for so long now and have always wanted to try it out. Glad I did. I got the sesame seed bagel, with their perfectly cooked bacon, sprouts, cucumber, dill and their veggie spread. It was loaded and delicious. One of the best bagel shops around Los Angeles! I know that's quite a statement but what sets them apart is the cream cheese! This is my second time at here and the service is always top tier! They have seating in the back and in the front of the shop and plenty of parking around the shop! I got the no. 1 with onion bagel. To be honest it'll be good with any bagel of your choice. But I have to say, GET THE ANGRY CREAM CHEESE! it's a habanero honey cream cheese and OMG it really elevates the flavor! Trust me, it's not that spicy and you'll be so happy. Both bagels were really good!I wasn't expecting whole garlic cloves underneath the cheddar in the bagels which I did feel was a bit much but it didn't really hamper the taste. I love Hank's! It's one of my favorite breakfast places in the Burbank/Toluca Lake area. Their bagels are nice and chewy. The sesame, bialy, and salt bagels are my favorite. I usually order the #2 breakfast sandwich on an onion bialy. It's sooooo freakin' good. I'm drooling just thinking about it. Egg, gruyere, greens (I think collards?), hot peppers...It's a work of art. And I usually crave it at least once a month. (I only go out for breakfast on the weekends.) The employees are always so nice and look like they actually enjoy their jobs. Service is pretty quick, too. The breakfast sandwiches take about 10 minutes or so. I wanted to love Hank's so bad! This has been on my bagel list for almost 2 years and I finally made it out. Let's preface this review by stating that I am an avid bagel lover!! I would eat one every single day if I could. My order is always an everything bagel toasted with scallion cream cheese at every bagel shop but I always make sure to try something else exclusive to that place. I had the number four on an everything bagel toasted. I know that toasting your bagels is frowned upon at some places but honestly, I don't even think they toasted mine. Aside from that it was sooooo chewy. Believe me I know that a good bagel is supposed to have a nice chew, but this was excessive. I don't think I've ever had a bagel this dense before, not in New York , not in Los Angeles , not anywhere. And even with all of the toppings on the everything bagel it somehow still lacked flavor. I think it may have needed more salt. As for the sandwich, I thought that it was definitely missing something. They add some kind of an aïoli, but even then it was still dry overall. It was $13.50 which is steep for a bagel sandwich, I asked if I can sub out the aïoli for cream cheese, but they said it would be two dollars extra to add. $15.50 for a veggie bagel is really pricey so I took it as is. The sandwich looked better than it actually tasted. The service was also not great. I wouldn't even call it good, nobody seemed like they wanted to be there. When my order was called out it was left on the table and the girl went right back inside before I could even grab it. Two stars because it's still Hank's, but this location is like the off-brand on-crack cousin of the Sherman Oaks Hank's--a little less charming, a little more "we don't toast bagels here," and a bit less customer-first. I ordered two onion bialys. Toasted with cream cheese. Simple, right? Toast the bagel. That's a basic bagel option. They agreed to it when I ordered... SO TOAST THE FREAKIN BAGEL! That's the covenant between bagel and man we have all signed-off on. But I get my order, bite into it and... it's cold. Not "cooling-off-from-a-toast-sesh" cold. I mean COLD. And chewy. Unlike a toasted bagel that would be... wanna guess?? If you said "warm and crunchy" you win! Except not here. You would lose. So I bring it back to the counter and I'm like, very politely, "Hey, this was supposed to be toasted." And then the guy launches into a TED Talk about why it's impossible to toast an onion bialy because of the onions on top blah blah blah. Then he tells me that if I want it toasted next time, I should ask for it "extra toasted." Next time? We're still in this time, bro. This was in the same monologue where he explained the impossibilities of toasting an onion bialy. But if one says the magic words "extra toasted" then it unlocks a secret-menu of toasting opportunities?? The f*ck?! And THEN...nothing. No "let me re-toast that for you." No "I'm so sorry, here's a new bagel." Just his nonsensical "This was your fault for not saying EXTRA toasted." All that to say, I'll stick to Sherman Oaks Hank's--where they still believe in the integrity, sanctity, and possibility of a toasted onion bialy. God bless America. read more

For years I have heard a very loud, vocal minority, "you can't find a good bagel in Los Angeles." Then Hank's opened up and suddenly I felt a great disturbance in the Force...as if millions of voices suddenly cried out and were suddenly silenced...but something wonderful has happened, Los Angeles is going through a bagel renaissance...over the past few years native New Yorkers are becoming less grumpy about where to get a good bagel. I will preface that Hank's is not a traditional New York bagel...nothing will match that bodega, coffee cart, or deli you're used to. Instead, Hank's is more than just a New York style bagel, it is amazing bread, period. It just happens to be bagel shaped. The dough is pillowy soft and chewy. The crust is crunchy, but not so much that you can't take a bite through it. The plain bagel tastes great, not just a baked, flavorless sponge like the supermarket ones we're used to. It the perfect nexus of artisan bread, sourdough, and the second best breakfast sandwich bread (after croissants). Like any good bagel shop, you can get your traditional bagels here...poppy, everything, sesame, etc. On weekends, they have egg as a daily special and it's my favorite (even though it's not quite as eggy as other places). They have rotating daily specials, like Friday's are the Serrano Cheddar which is simply amazing. Schmeared heavily with their house made cream cheese, it tastes like you're eating the best jalapeño popper ever. Where Hank's shines the most though is that it's not just a bagel shop, but maybe one of the best sandwich places in the city. I've used this phrase before for other restaurants, but what they do here is alchemy. The #3 belongs in the pantheon of great LA sandwiches along with the #19 at Langers and the Godmother from Bay Cities. The #3 is their smoked salmon sandwich. On first glance, it's too much...lox, scallion cream cheese, capers, radish, pickled onion, salted cucumber, sprouts, tomato, and dill. There was a time in my life when I would have asked some of those things to be removed, but thankfully, at the time, they had a no substitution policy...because all these things go together. The saltiness, the acid, and the fat combine into the best possible bite. This isn't just a symphony of flavors, it's their opus. There's only two negatives I'll bring up with the #3...the construction of so many things on a somewhat dense piece of bread leads to a lot of spill outs, so eating this sandwich can be quite messy at times. There is an option for having it scooped, which I'm normally not in favor of removing any of the bread, but it's one of the few times where I think it's necessary. The other negative about this sandwich is that it's not good as it used to be. Don't get me wrong, it's still a ten out of ten, but for their first few years, Hank's made their gravlax in house...but when they could not sustain getting the quality ingredients they wanted to keep up their standard, they were forced to pivot to serving high quality smoked salmon they could source at a similar cost. There's been other times when they could not get the right poppyseeds or other ingredients to make specific bagels so those were just off the menu some days. While it may be disruptive, I really do appreciate their commitment to high quality. They could have just gone with cheaper, lesser quality stuff, but instead they commit to the integrity of their products. Hank's may not have been the first great bagel in Los Angeles, but it's certainly among the greats. read more

However, there are a few tables to sit at outside. I knew it was going to be a good bagel shop when the sign read open till 2 or till sold out. Cashier was irritable throughout my entire interaction with her. The business was closing in 45 minutes but by her attitude she was ready to leave for the day. I brought a friend to check this place out but the cashier basically rushed us to order. After ordering we went to get a cup of water at their self serve area. We noticed the container was empty and kindly asked another staff member if we could get assistance. This staff member also came off irritable to even assist us that she responded with someone else can help you. The overall atmosphere was a bit unwelcoming. I'm hoping that this customer service was only because it was New Year's Day. Maybe some staff members are upset they had to get up early to work or just hungover. Sesame Bagel- 10/10 Great flavor and texture. Angry Spread- 10/10 Don't be fooled as this spread does have a kick of spice. This place is amazing! I tried an everything jalapeño cheddar bagel with lox spread and it was more than fantastic. The bagel was fresh and crisp. And the spread was just perfect on the bagel with the right amount of lox. They also offer water cups and dental picks to get all that everything bagel out of your teeth after. Staff were friendly and ordering at the counter was easy. Food came out at a reasonable time and we waited outside in the nice weather to wait at some outdoor seating. Five big fat stars for Hank's! They take cash. They don't run out of onion bagels at 1:45 PM! They have a cute little dog friendly patio in the back. Their sandwiches are delicious. Everyone is nice. I went with the No.3 and I chose an egg bagel. This comes with gravlax, scallion schmear, cucumbers, capers, pickled onion, tomato, dill & sprouts. This is not a cheap bagel sammich. It's $15.50. It was a tasty bagel sandwich, no doubt. I asked for it to be toasted. I won't next time. For this price, i thought there should have been more lox. That wouldve almost justified the price IMO. The combination of ingredients were really good. I liked that they added sprouts. The lox had a nice smokiness to it and the schmear was delicious. The lady also got a No.3 but with an everything bagel. She shared my sentiments on wanting more lox for the price. She liked her bagel sandwich even still. Service was friendly. Service was good and friendly - the cook in the back was singing his heart out at 7am which brightened our morning. We got the #1 and #4. #1 said that the bacon was spicy but there wasn't much spice which was good. It was messy to eat but had good flavor. #4 was tasty. Definitely packed full which made it hard to eat, but I'm not complaining because for the price I would expect it to have a hefty amount of toppings. However, the bagels here are just so chewy and difficult to eat to the point of being almost inedible. First off, we specifically asked for toasted and I do not think the bagels were toasted at all. Second, the bagels are SO chewy and difficult to eat, almost to the point of being rubber. It was a constant battle in my mouth to swallow each bite. My jaw physically hurt after I was done eating the sandwich. As someone who has eaten hundreds of bagels, this is absolutely not a normal bagel consistency! The bagels here are also smaller than what I am used to and contain less lox and cream cheese filling than other places. The lox tasted good though, and were the one bright spot.
