Taking care of my afternoon needs with a mouth full of sweet balls is always note worthy in my book. I usually take a minute or two to drool at their glowing display of fresh looking donuts, even though I already know what I want. I normally grab a cruller and an old fashion, but today I felt somewhat ballsy and got half a dozen donut balls. Some places fry their donuts too long and it tastes like I'm eating a burnt rock, but these balls are perfect. Not heavy on the glazing and it seems like their deep fryer is always filled with clean oil. They got a good lunch deal: burger (or whatever), fries, and a can of soda for $6 -- more or less. They also sell donuts (obviously), fresh brewed coffee, chips, soft drinks, cup of noodles, fruit (surprisingly), and.. well yeah that sums it up. Had a roast beef (yes, off my diet) on wheat. For $6.95 (comes with fries and a soda). After half my sandwich, I stopped eating and left. Kinda boring review, huh, that's because this place is so typical donut shop, except the groups of elders that hang and talk about the last war wasn't there. Also I believe that I did not get off my diet after I ate. Why? - cause everything other than the diet coke tasted ... inert. I have to give this place five stars because they're always so happy to greet and help out their customers. I get my daily dose of caffeine here, coffee or tea, with an occasional pastry while waiting for the bus- super convenient that the bus stop is right in front! This is a review that only discusses donuts and experiences buying them here. I can't say I am a traveler for donuts - they are a proximity-based sort of purchase for me. Happy Donuts is a corner unit on Van Ness that doubles as an indoor waiting space to catch the 47 or 49 buses. The staff has been incredibly friendly when I visit, and remembers which donuts I like. Overall verdict: Donut craving is satiated Donut style: Very orthodox donut making, nothing zany about them. Unhappy old stale "please buy me already" donuts for the most part. Those donuts are literally couple of hours away from being throwed in a carbage. I do now exclude a chance you would get a fresh ones, but not sure how ofter that can happen in this place, cause it's never looks buzy. People who work there are kind of nice though. If I want a donut I'll go here over Bobs any day. Bob's donuts are old and taste like dirty oil. I don't make a habit of eating donuts regularly but occasionally I'll bring some into work or the bf will pick up some donut holes on the weekend. Every donut I've ever had from here has been good and fresh, their crullers are very good. In addition to the donuts, I've ordered a toasted bagel and cream cheese and an egg, bacon and cheese bagel before. The bagel was just warm, barely toasted and the cream cheese cold. My boyfriend said the bacon egg and cheese bagel was just ok, he prefers the bagelry on Polk St. Lastly, they are very friendly, it's usually an older woman and younger man and they are very, very attentive and nice. They will try and upsell you but hey, they are a business, it's easy to just say no to a cup of coffee if you don't want one! read more

Just walked in off the street today to get a donut. It all looked so good I picked up a chocolate donut for a friend, a glazed for me, and a blueberry muffin also. It all came out to LESS than $3!! WoW!! I've been to other places where just one muffin will cost $3 and change!!! Later ate the glazed and it was good. NO street parking. read more

This place is a low price no frills donut, sandwich and Asian dinner shop. Decor feels like a throw back from the 90s. Everything in the store is amazing for the price. My GF and I go here regularly to grab breakfast sandwiches and donuts (as others point out, the crullers are very good). I also get the hot roast beef sandwich (comes with fries) and the dinners from time to time. Staff are super friendly as well! YIKES. One shouldn't expect much from basic donut shops...but damn! Don't expect your bagel to be toasted, and for god's sake stay away from the smoothies. I was a bit hungover and wanted something refreshing. Little did I know I was actually going to get a rather sorry slushie. I thought their smoothies would be sort of on-par with McDonald's...but nope. It was straight up crushed ice with a snow cone red syrup over it. Full disclosure: I"ve never eaten a donut here before! I always get coffee (they have a great selection of different flavored coffees - the hazelnut and french vanilla are my favorites!) and a english muffin with egg and cheese. Super delish! Donuts are good but not the best I'be ever had. However, they are always fresh & cranking them out. The coffee is always hot & they have a bar with about six different kinds. Reminds me of all the old gas stations with flavors like Irish Cream & they still serve them in glass carafes on a hot plates. I enjoy the breakfast sandwiches too. Their croissants are just like those you might get at a 5 star restaurant, buttery & always fresh. It's nothing special - but it's good enough to satisfy your random fried bread cravings. This is the closest donut shop to me, and it's always great for a fresh donut (or three). The maple frosting tastes really delicious, the apple fritters are crisp, and the glazed are always fluffy and soft. The guy that is usually behind the counter is always friendly and pleasant. Since it's on Van Ness and it's been there a while, it's not fancy and to be honest, a little dingy, like an old diner kind of feel (they have food like burgers and breakfast plates, but I haven't tried those) but it's always clean and there are people going in and out all the time. All in all, it delivers what it promises- delicious fresh donuts at normal donut prices (don't get me started on those SF foodie hipster $4 vegan donuts or the ones with weird things like bacon bits and Oreos on them-- ick!). read more

My girlfriend and me visited San Francisco's and this place was awesome, the variety of coffees is awesome and I have never seen such good donuts shop where I live here down in So Cal. The donuts are freshly made like if grandma made them herself, pulled straight out of the oven. The Egg and cheese sandwiches are unbelievably delicious. The food was nasty not cooked and I asked for my money back. They wouldn't give me a refund because they are greedy. I don't know about the donuts here, as I've never had them, but I'll tell you this: They make a LOVELY plain croissant! And HUGE. It looks like some kind of genetically modified croissant, engineered in Texas or something. I must confess, I didn't expect much from it. But I am pleasantly surprised. This croissant, in addition to being huge, was light, flaky & VERY tasty (Must be the beef tallow... Just kidding!). And only $1.75! I think this qualifies it for "Hidden Gem" status. Happy Donuts has a spacious eating area, especially for a donut shop. I ordered the ham and cheese croissant. THe croissant looked like it was bought from costco ahahahaha. The cheese and ham wasn't baked into the croissant, it was just placed in-between, so i might be onto something. It was fairly priced. Don't go here if its hot, the place has no A/C. The fish burger is not bad . The french fries are like the cafeteria fries you get in your lunch back in middle or high school except these aren't as soggy and actually taste pretty good .
