The interior is nice and the staff very friendly. The food was hit and miss. The best was the do Miao. Tasty garlicy and fresh. Next best of 4 items was salt pepper spareribs. These were tender. My family ( brothers,sisters,cousins,grandma, grandpa,extended family members..etc...) and i have been going to this place for yearsssss. We go there at least once or twice a week and order food to go at least 3 times a week. We used this place as our family get-together place. 2x a month. But we will no longer support a business that doesn't appreciate loyal customers, and are so greedy to the point that they rather loose a longggg and loyal customer for trying to charge .30cent for a tiny hot sauce . We always order over $40 of food and this time i requested some hot sauce fir the rice. Well, they wanted to charge me . 30cent for each tinny sauce containers. Greedy !!! I was here yesterday with my boyfriend, first time. The lady's were super sweet and explained a lot of their dishes to us we were super lost! This is what we got We had the chicken rice It was ok, the chicken didn't really taste like chicken it was not fully cooked so it tasted kind of weird. My family loves this place. We've gone for multiple birthdays. The ladies are so sweet. Once they're comfortable they can be really close n touchy, so if you don't like that just sit away lol but we love em. They have great food. Walnut shrimp, crab butterfly, shrimp fried rice is my main go to meal. They're FANTASTIC with allergies. I have a soy allergy and gluten allergy and they let me know what I can have and what they can adjust. When I cheat on gluten I get soy free chow mein. Pretty good substitute. This place has a definitely huge aftermath of being takedown a couple weeks ago. Our broker had referred us to this, the place was so quiet. We came in during a Saturday evening and the whole restaurant was pretty much empty. This restaurant was one of the many restaurants that actually gotten a take-down robbery. Out of our own conveniences, the waitress was so patience with us since we were new to the restaurant. The waitress had gotten me a Chinese menu (food that usually the mainstream American won't like, that's why it's in Chinese, I think) and since I barely was able to read Chinese she had read out all the items for me in Chinese. The food came out just great. I was even able to teach our broker in what's the difference between Chinese Broccoli vs the ones we normally see in mainstream market. People need to start to come back here again. I really doubt crime would strike twice in the same restaurant. I would normally give 4 Stars to a place like this, but I think I'm going to upgrade it since the staff was so friendly and the restaurant business in Oakland need a definite boost. 5 STARS!!! read more

After reading all the happy reviews for Happy Garden, we were unfortunately less than happy with our order. The potstickers were good, but the other two dishes (walnut shrimp and kung pao chicken) were nothing to write to Yelp about. Actually, they were - and that is why I am writing. The Walnut Shrimp sounded so tasty, but when we got it home we were amazed that the shrimp were drowning in this odd mayonaise-type sauce. Our Kung Pao chicken was also sub-par with gummy chicken and carrots???. Perhaps I have been spoiled by SF Chinese food, but Happy Garden left me with an unhappy tummy. They have the best General's Chicken I have ever had. I have ordered it all over the state and have finally found the holy grail of crispy, sweet and spicy chicken. So awesome. Here's the winning order: Crab Wonton/Star things House Chow Mein General's Chicken Mu Shu Pork The Chicken and Asparagus is also good. Order this and you can't go wrong. As for small portions... that definitely has not been a problem for us. Standard Chinese restaurant to large sized plates every time we've eaten here... both dine in and to-go. Great, old school Cantonese restaurant. Dark wood wainscott paneling reminds me of olf sf chinatown restaurants like far east. Very friendly staff - owner Shali and Lisa - make you feel at home. This is the kind of place where regulars are greeted by name. Food is solid Canto. If its not on the menu they'll make it for you anyway. Any childhood favorites you remember, but can't find anywhere, just ask and Happy Garden will whip it up. Love this place. True, old school treasure w new school customer service. this is a pretty large sized restaurant that is suited for banquets, etc. friendly staff with prompt service and friendly chatty conversation, the peking spareribs(7.50) was a large portion with a slight vinegary taste, the lettuced leaf pine nut chicken(9.50) was an ok version of lettuced leaf diced dried oysters. the lamb stew in a claypot (8.95) wasn't adequately cooked or warmed up, therefore unedible. they have wor choy (family dinners) combinations starting at $28. we were given complimentary house soup and cubed organges for desert. this place is a nice alternative to going to chitown without the travel and parking headaches. what you will miss is the true chinatown taste. read more

This was Lo-Lo and my third friend-date and I have mixed feelings . . . but ultimately I think my bad experience was based poorly on my assumptions regarding the dish I ordered. And you know what they say about assumptions: they make an ass-out-of-you . . . so stop being an ass! You see, I assumed that the steamed chicken w/ bok choy came w/out sauce. Instead it was a mildly-flavored cornstarch soup w/ itsy bitsy pieces of bony chicken and a few pieces of bok choy. I think I offended the delicate nature of the waitress when I had to pick the chicken apart w/ my fingers b/c chopsticks were no use in that slimy mess. She basically shamed me into using a fork and knife and then I felt like THAT PERSON eating w/ silverware in a Chinese restaurant. Lo-Lo got the silverware-of-shame, too. Seriously, how are you supposed to eat fried chicken w/ chopsticks? Next time I'll get the fresh seafood. I love to see the fish swimming around moments before I eat it! THE SEAFOOD! Being an Oakland Chinese citizen and have tasted many different Chinese restaurants, I have to say this is one of my favorites. I came here with my family (a group of 6) and we were seated at one of the medium-sized tables. My family ordered a set package($48) on the menu and an additional dish just in case we are still hungry. The dishes were well made and not bland as other reviews may describe. Unlike other typical restaurants where the dish is filled with sauces and cannot distinguish between kung pao and general sauce, I can taste each distinct flavors. Everyone was satisfied with their meal and nobody left the restaurant hungry. We were served with fresh and sweet oranges. The oranges also made my day =). The main highlight of the night was the seafood. The oysters and the fish were fantastic. It was fresh and well made. It has been a long while since I tasted a dish that is so fresh and well put together. The fish cod with corn is delicious and it is fried just about right. The service was wonderful and exciting. They were happy and engaged with the customers. I felt very comfortable and relaxed. I didn't feel that I was being rushed. Although it is located in a random spot and its presence is not as apparent as other restaurants, I feel that it is a hidden treasure that should be exposed and cherished by the public. This is my go-to place when I am sick. They offer a hot and sour soup that succeeds in exorcising my demons. It works every time and is so delicious, I have it even when I'm not sick. I also love their sizzling rice soup. So yummy and hearty! A meal on its own. The broth is mouth-watering. I am a fan of greens and they do greens well. Chinese broccoli, bok choy, snow pea leaves, pea sprouts and although it is not usually on the menu-- sweet potato leaves... they're amazing! I appreicate this place. As a Mills student, I wish they delivered to campus. There were so many times that I could have used a good bowl soup to make me feel better. read more

I like happy garden. Food is fresh, service is attentive, and they don't add MSG in their food. I've been here 5 or 6 times now and have had a number of dishes. All were very good. Standouts are double mushroom plate, wonton soup with veggies, and kung pow tofu. Everything is nice and clean inside, you can tell they really want it to be a good experience. We were totally shamed into using utensils when she saw us manhandling the chicken, she snapped at us, "Why didn't you tell me you needed a fork!?!?!" The containers are the same ol' same ol' containers ALL or MOST chinese restaurants offer for take out! Also, I requested all white meat chicken for the Walnut Chicken dish, they told me ONLY white meat chicken for Lemon Chicken, I offered to pay more for the request, NO DEAL! I went ahead and ordered the walnut chicken, I was dissapointed BIGTIME! The chicken was OVER cooked and in tiny bit pieces! And just a few walnut pieces.... I will get into my car and drive downtown next time I do chinese food for my family.. Their Walnut Prawns are decent, the Chow Mein was tastless.. You WILL need to pour a ton of soy sauce for flavor. I'm glad I found a place open late on Saturday night on Christmas eve because I had to work the night shift today. Their post stickers are delicious, very well stuffed. I also ordered fish filet with black bean sauce, but I thought the portion was small. Chicken corn soup, very hearty and had big pieces of chicken. My only complaint and to be fair this is not their fault, was a man who sat next to my table, snorting, slurping his chow mein and demanding the WiFi password. Oh god. Why me? He's laughing out loud and singing now and still snorting. Oh Lord. Maybe he'll leave soon. I wanted to move, but my food already arrived and I ordered quite a few dishes to take home as well. This is the problem when an establishment cannot refuse service to an uncouth person, other diners suffer. We've been ordering here for years. Not sure why this is the first yelp review I've done. We always order togo and it's always fast and easy to pick up. Out favorites are General's chicken, chicken with green beans, pork fried rice, pot stickers, hot mustard.. They give you a lot of food so what's not eaten that night will be a nice lunch the next day. The staff (family) are always nice and really love talking with them and saying hi. More than reasonable prices & fairly large portion sizes. Amazing range of specials & fresh seafood -- I ordered salt & pepper eggplant and spicy prawns and asparagus and wasn't disappointed by the flavor or spiciness of either. I also wasn't particularly impressed, but it was a solid meal. Bonus points for serving unwrapped, locally made (in downtown Oakland) fortune cookies and a half orange after the meal. The wait staff was attentive and cheerful, and the Chinese language TV on the flat screen behind the cashier's stand was a nice distraction, especially with the sound off. Prices were downright cheap for veggie and most meat dishes, although seafood ratchets the cost right up. Some non-freshly cleaned seafood (such as prawns) was much more reasonable ($9-11 per dish). The downsides? The food was slightly saltier than I'd have liked, especially in the beans and sauce in the prawns & asparagus. The sauce also got rather coagulated after a while. It was more than fine throughout most of the meal, though. The hot tea was rather bland and subpar, as well. I would certainly not make Happy Garden a destination, but if you find yourself in the Laurel anyway and are in the mood for a bite of Chinese, this is where I'd head. read more

The food was quick and hot. It could have been a little more flavorful, though. The service here was really great. Our server was pleasant and attentive. I'm giving them 5 stars because they were very kind to my sort of, obviously homeless, lunch companion, a woman who had wandered by while I had been gardening in my front yard, a few block from here. She had come up to me and gave me a story about needing "just four more dollars to get the locksmith to fix the key that broke off in her car door." It was a bit obvious that this woman could little afford a car. I told her to hold on and I went and got my key and backpack and came back and told her I'd walk with her to her car and help her "pay the serviceman." We ended up walking almost up to MacArthur and she told me, after two blocks of talking and listening, her real story, that she was homeless and just wanted something to eat. So I offered to walk up to the Laurel District restaurants and have lunch with her. She agreed and we decided on Happy Garden. I bought her lunch, gave her a compassionate ear and we parted ways. She said I restored her faith in humanity and gave the boost to get herself together. I really don't think this was the case, but you never know. Maybe I did. I tipped our server an extra $10 because she didn't get all freaked out when my companion spent about 20 minutes in their bathroom, getting herself cleaned up a bit. read more

I don't want to give it 5 stars because, it's not the best Chinese food you'll ever have in your life. That said, it's consistently good quality. Their shrimp chowfun with runny egg gravy is incredible (a special order I have had disastrous results with elsewhere) and highly recommended, and their portions are huge (which is fair to match their price.) I go here all the time because of its proximity to my house and get the shrimp chowfun w/ egg almost every single time, but I also really enjoy their walnut shrimp and clams in black bean sauce. EDIT I'm updating the review to 5 stars because I finally did dine-in. (Every other time was take-out). I was sharing dinner with my parents. The chowfun I mentioned before seemed like an even bigger portion. They didn't have salt and pepper chicken on their menu for some reason, but happily offered it to my stepmom. This is going to be my go to chinese take out spot. It's only 10 minutes away from my house and they make a perfect pan fried noodle! It was odd that they put both the crispy noodle and sauce/fixings in the same package because by the time we got home, it was soaked and no longer crispy. Normally restaurants would separate them so that's my only concern. We ordered the combination pan fried noodle (cost $1 to get it panfried), mongolian beef and seafood tofu. I loved everything! My least favorite was probably the mongolian beef, it didn't have the typical sear/char flavor but also could be because of the packaging and how it still cooks after being trapped in a plastic container. Second favorite was the seafood tofu - the tofu was perfectly juicy. It's no fried, it's lightly covered with a juicyness of a soft tofu. The seafood contains some fish filet, squid and shrimp. I wish the portion size was larger, but really good nonetheless. Overall, very affordable as well. 3 items plus tax costs $36 read more

It was empty when we got there at 6m on a Tues night. So we got attentive service from several wait staff. Interesting to see the rest of the staff playing 7 card poker and drinking beers at the back table. Cool. Beef Chow fun - great Cod with black bean sauce - yummy, but a little oily Honey walnut prawns - standard Steamed chicken with slivers of ginger - odd color, but tasty. We missed the specials board hanging on the wall. Make sure you check that out. This filled up 3 women and 2 men. With a bowl of rice, teas and waters, the bill was a jaw dropping of only $38... sheesh,, thats how much I usually spend on me and da girl. After we dropped a 6'r for tip, we walked to our car which was just parked 5 steps away at the meter - which we had to plug in 20 or so dimes to cover parking for the new ridiculous meter times of 8am-8pm.
