So happy to stumble upon this hidden gem in Safety Harbor! Happy Salmon is a small, Japanese family-owned sushi restaurant in the middle of Safety Harbor's saturated restaurant scene. From the moment we walked in, I appreciated that the staff was eager to welcome us with a toddler in tow. Lucky for us, it was 5 p.m. on a Tuesday so they weren't busy and we didn't have to wait long for our sushi. The picky toddler missed out by turning up her nose at her avocado roll. Our sushi was super fresh, beautifully presented and perfectly flavorful. I could taste the love and care that was put into each roll by the female sushi chef/owner. It was nice to introduce the kids to something new (they loved the chopsticks, of course) but I can't wait to go back for a more relaxing date night to enjoy the full Happy Salmon experience with wine, appetizer and dessert. read more

Happy Salmon was packed on a Thursday night, but still a perfect place to stop in for a nice, casual sushi night with friends. We also didn't feel rushed at all which allowed us to enjoy our dining experience. The gyoza, miso soup, sake, and sushi rolls were all delicious. Happy Salmond provided options with cooked fish which was much appreciated. Although it's a smaller restaurant, the seating was nice had a variety of booths, tables and bar seating. This little storefront sushi place is AWESOME. Safety Harbor (Say Hay) is a great walking town, with nice spots to grab dinner or a quick appetizer, and Happy Salmon is a definite standout. We eat a fair amount of sushi, mostly in Tampa and we felt the sushi was as good as anything we've eaten in recent memory. Super fresh ingredients, tightly rolled and flavorful rolls; a nice selection of appetizers and if you're sake afficianado (I'm not), there's an excellent selection of bottles available. One last note on beverages, they serve Sapporro beer and they keep it ICE cold... really nice touch after walking in the Florida heat, and a great fit with the excellent sushi. We will only stop for the Sangria on third Friday going forward. We were regulars at Happy Salmon and bring all of our visitors there because the sushi was always good. However, we will no longer go here as the the last attempt we were stopped walking in the door by the waitress(ever changing staff) yelling from the back they were out of Sushi! The next trip we got a table but the long service was unbearable this time especially since Tony was clearly frustrated and distracted by what appears to be a lack of effort from the his wife at the sushi! We had a direct view of the end of the sushi bar and he was consistently hovering at this spot. So much so he wasn't attentive to the Saki that we ordered and had to ask twice for it. We never got a refill of our drinks even after asking for them on several flybys by Tony. There were even rumbling from other booths and 3 groups walked out due to the long delay at the sushi bar. It is sad because the sushi does taste good and for such a small place these long delays are deadly as it is importantly get more than one group served per table. The fact our meal took 1 hour to be received after our apps is too long. The kid in the kitchen is pumping out the apps at a good pace but the sushi bar is the problem and you and see and feel this when you are close to the action. I wish these guys the best but this we will go anymore. :-( read more

We waited 1.5 hour for the food which was no big deal until the sushi chef behind the counter mumbled under her breath "because of your big order the whole kitchen is backed up". You guys! I am so excited to leave a review for this restaurant! So, it's my husband and my anniversary weekend and we came here to Safety Harbor. We wanted to eat dinner somewhere within walking distance to our resort, and we love sushi, so we chose Happy Salmon. Just a short, 5 minute walk down Main st, past all of the adorable little shops and restaurants, lighted palm trees, and town gazebo.... we arrived at Happy Salmon. We walk in, seat ourselves, and the super friendly owner comes to bring menus and take our drink orders. The menu he gave us mostly showed just the sushi, but on the wall was an off the menu menu.... Udon, tofu, edamame, ginger salads- the usual. My husband and I each chose an Udon bowl (huge! We will share next time!) house salads, and we shared 3 sushi rolls- dynamite roll, California roll, baked salmon roll. First, let's start with the salad. Where we come from in Ohio, all of the Japanese-like steakhouses serve the EXACT same ginger salad. Mostly bland, with a small amount of ginger flavor. The salad at Happy Salmon seriously cannot be beat. It was twice the size of what we are used to, and the dressing was made fresh as we waited! Oh my goodness, so delicious. Next, our udon bowls. They came with 2 (I think prawns) huge prawns or shrimp, tempura style and the broth was almost TOO good. The owner gave us a shake bottle of his spicy Japanese pepper flakes to put on the udon noodles, and it was just right. The sushi.. Ahhhh, the sushi. THE absolute freshest I've ever had. I grew up knowing what good sushi is, because my grandma is Japanese. This sushi beats g-ma's! The rice is cooked perfectly, and the ingredients are super fresh. With the food being so delicious and the owner being the sweetest man ever, we've already decided to go back for our anniversary dinner tomorrow! Update: Came back for the second night in a row. Just as delicious as last night! Let me add to my first review by saying this- this is all made from scratch. The owner, Tony, and his wife greet, serve, and cook. If you are looking for a place to get fast food, go somewhere else. If you are looking for a place where you can sit, relax, have a nice conversation, talk with other customers- then stay! This is the perfect place for all of that! But, please, do NOT complain or make a scene like the 3 annoying people that were in there tonight. You made complete fools of yourself in front of a packed restaurant, and when you left everyone cheered. The Happy Salmon is better off without your group wanting an excuse to get free dinner. We had to wait a little but between drinks/food etc but let me tell you.. it it worth it. Everything we ordered was phenomenal. There are only a couple people working the restaurant so may be why takes a bit. The chef does not sacrifice in quality or portion. Every roll and item is crafted to perfection. I would rather wait an extra 10 minutes to have beautifully plated delicious sushi than no wait and mediocre. You can tell the owners take great pride in their ingredients and their craft. When I heard this was opening, I was quite excited, as there aren't great sushi places in the area. Don't get me wrong, there are ok places, but not what I'm used to! A friend and I went here for dinner (they also had some sort of wine special which was an added bonus). Let me tell you, this was by far the best sushi I have ever had! I believe the name of the roll I got was "The Dragon Roll". Everything tasted so fresh, the avocado was creamy and perfectly ripened and the eel sauce was the perfect amount of salty. I don't recall what my friend had, but her experience was the same... to die for! Unfortunately I have not yet been back, but I will very soon. I live in town and stopped in for a roll. It was pretty good, so I picked up a take out menu. I called the next week to place an order. They weren't answering their phone. After several attempts, I assumed they had closed up early, however when I drove by an hour later they were wide open. The second week I tried to call again. It rang about 20 times before they took it off the hook. I drove by, again... Wide open. The third week I called they answered right away. I placed my order for one roll and they told me 25 minutes. Wow, I cannot believe how expensive this. I just paid close to $90 and got one appetizer, 8 pieces of Nigiri and a roll. In addition to the very high cost, the food is NOT fresh and it takes over an hour to serve. We have been to dine in and also have gotten take out and this was our experience both times. We gave it a second chance because the first time we went was during 3rd Friday and we thought it was just backed up. Apparently not.
