So we went there this past August for a trip to Victoria, BC for whale watching and heading to Vancouver for the day to drive back home. Why they call this place "HAPPY" Tree House....I don't know. When we first walked in--no smiles from the waitstaff. My husband told him this was our first time here, and no response or recommendations or even how to order. Prior to even picking this place--we looked on YELP. We thought when we order, we can actually grill our own skewers since we saw this grill like thing at the end of the table and wondered how to turn it on... the waitress told us it's ok and it's on. HUHHHH??? They actually pre-cooked for you and the flavoring was ALL THE SAME and dry. We couldn't tell what meat we chose. My kids couldn't eat any of it, and ended up going to get a HAPPY MEAL from McD's for them so they can eat on the way back to the States. At least my kids were happy, but this place sucks and their music on their TV monitor was so loud as well. Never will we go back to this place. One, no communication what so ever and the meat was dry. Why ppl comment it is tender and tasty obviously doesn't have taste buds. Two, I ordered the shrimp as well, which I ended up giving to my kiddos, and their bread was dry as hell, as well as their sweet potato type chips. It was such a waste of money. We did take all our leftovers back home, and we ended up making it taste better. I finally got my chance to come and try out this new restaurant that opened back in late December. We'd drive by with friends and I'd always say, we have to try it out. Well, I got my chance to do so today. My plans to go out with the kids got cancelled and my brother called me up. Hmmmmmmmm where should we eat. HEY! Lets try the new place out. Some kind of Chinese BBQ house. With that we were not sure what we were in for. Wondered if it was like the typical BBQ joints that we grew up with that were famous for RIBs and Roast Chicken and stuff. Memphis Blues kind of food. Or was it going to be like a Korean BBQ or even Japanese BBQ? The latter was the closest. I hadn't thought of Chinese version of Yakitori, but this was what it was to my brother and myself. Upon entering, I was happy all of a sudden. The wooden furniture and earthy feeling with lots of natural light made me feel good just to be there. The smell of cook meats over a grill and the scent of cumin infused lamb. I think I was sold before I could even order. We tried an assortment of skewers, from lamb to beef to pork and chicken wings. Had some black fungus, which for under $5 was a good deal compared to other places that served this dish. I wouldn't call their skewers top notch. I think they're still working it out. However it is good and I will give this place a solid notch of 3 stars for BBQ items. 3.5 stars for the appetizers that we had and a 4 star for our lamb soup that we shared. I really enjoyed the broth. Quite tasty, not overly salted clear broth and not too oily. Service was nice. Available in well spoken Chinese Mandarin and English. The only let down was the spicy chicken wings which were marinated. The meat looked a bit raw, but was probably cooked, but just because it was marinated. I didn't bother to finish them or tell them I thought it should be cooked a few minutes more. They're regular chicken wings on a skewer were tasty. Loved the wooden furniture. Loved the atmosphere. Always saw a lot of people in there, place is always busy. We finally decided to try it. We had a couple of seafood items, abalone was put on reused shell, the prawn was not as fresh, scallop was tasteless. They put a lot of spices on everything. The meat were almost unrecognizable, and over-cooked. Went on a Wednesday night and all the tables (benches) were full. Overall the food was flavorful and delicious but the atmosphere was too noisy and the service was lacking (which is typical of some Asian restaurants). This is a feasting place for meat and BBQ lovers. Lots of different skewers (lamb, beef, chicken, pork, shrimp, etc) to choose from. Every time they bring you your skewers they just place it on top of the previous skewers/dish. (Guess it's less dishes for them to do?!) Every other table ordered the BBQ fish dish which is good to share with a larger group. (Unfortunately there were only two of us so we didn't order the fish but will definitely do so the next time). Be forewarned that they play loud Chinese music videos which made it difficult to chat over the already loud buzzing of Asian voices. (Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against Asian people as I'm Chinese Canadian so I know exactly how loud we can get. ) Also the place can get quite warm, there's limited parking in this small strip mall, used skewers go in the bamboo holder, some of the servers spoke limited English and the service was poor. Decent. Not amazing. Overpriced for the amount of food you get. For people who don't like spicy... do not come here. Literally everything on the menu is spicy. For me personally that was a downer. You have no dishes to complement the spice with and nothing to calm the fire in your mouth. They do barbecue everything for you which is nice but be aware that you're definitely going to leave with your hair smelling very strongly of smoke. Place is fairly busy but wouldn't return. This place is a bit overpriced, and a lot of the items on the menu are spicy, which sucks if you can't handle the spice. We ordered lamb, beef, beef tripe and pork skewers, which were all okay, but nothing really spectacular. The chicken wings and pork skin were pretty mediocre as well. The shredded kelp was the spiciest thing ever, and I literally had to stop after a couple bites. Standouts were the eggplant and the chives, which were surprisingly very tasty. A huge fan of lamb skewers, and this place makes them really nice. When I went here yesterday, even with a reservation it was a 20 minute wait. Not that big of a problem though, it was Saturday night as well as during their rush hour. We were stuck on ordering which soup base we wanted for the fish. I suggested Spicy with Pepper because it isn't as spicy as their most spiciest one. We ended up ordering the Black Bean base which was meh, I would've preferred the spicy base. Codfish was good, and the noodles were good too. If they were in the spicy soup base it would've been better. We ordered 10 lamb skewers, and these come out pretty quick which is nice. I like the flavour of their skewers, a little peppery and salty, not too complicated. Their spicy chicken wings are really really good. They give you about 2-3 per skewer and I had about 4 skewers of these. Ox throat was good too, I thought they were going to be very chewy, but they were soft and had the texture of fishballs. They also had plain white bun skewers which i didn't think much of until I had them. They were slightly sweet, crispy outside and oh so soft inside. You didn't need to dip them in anything, they were that good. Side dishes were pretty good as well. The spicy beef tendons were so good, their spicy sauce is slightly sweet as well. I don't know how to say this in english but it is clear noodles with chilli and cucumber, had a really nice flavour. The shredded potatoes were a bit lacking in a vinegar taste, but overall okay. This place is loud and I mean LOUD. People talk loud because the music playing on the TV is pretty loud.To me I don't really mind as much, but this is more of a hangout place for your friends rather than a date spot. Service to me is fine, you don't really need to interact with them as much other than drink refills and stuff but they clean up your table once in awhile which is good. Parking is very difficult to find at rush hours, we luckily managed to grab a spot once we entered the lot. To have a good time, expect to spend a good amount of money because everything is pretty expensive when added up together. First off, before I begin my review, let me give you a fashion tip at Happy Tree BBQ. Wear dark or patterned clothes, or casual clothing. Why? My girl friend wore a sexy dress to dine with us last night and she dropped a saucy skewer onto her light colored dress. Then my guy friend bit into a corn cob and sprayed her in the face with corn juice. Yikes. Funny but unfortunate. I wore a casual patterned piece because I knew I was going to drop sauce or spices onto my clothes, and yes I did. The restaurant is really hot, the air is stuffy and not well-ventilated, so keep that in mind when you go. Wear very little so you can sweat it out, or if you can't stand heat, go during colder weather. Also, it's common sense that when a restaurant is a BBQ venue, it's going to smell like BBQ smoke and the smell may get into your clothes and hair, duh. Not sure why the reviewer below cried about needing a shower after, he's obviously not frequenting enough BBQ venues, lol. A lot of Asian overseas girls were wearing upscale dresses there. They are whack because the food is loaded with messy delicious sauces and spices. I saw a bunch of materialistic girls desperately cleaning their splattered dresses with napkins, lol. We had corn, chicken knee skewers (yum), lamb skewers (the best skewer), beef skewers (was ok), lamb kidney skewers (grossly good), female capeline fish (pregnant smelts that were too salty), enoki mushroom (our table's favorite), and squid tentacles (my favorite). The food may seem more on the adventerous side to Westerners, because our table's group included a Caucasian friend and he called the food "hardcore" and wasn't able to stomach the knees, tentacles, or kidneys, lol. Customer service: Meh, what do you expect from Chinese Richmond venues? Low to non-existant. The staff could learn to speak English, because... we're in Canada, folks. Seriously, it just another taste awful Chinese style BBQ Skewer restaurant, with tons of MSG and unknown spices that can kill your throat and tongue within a minute or two. All BBQ skewers were tasted the same, tons of spices covered up the taste of meats, and it was not cheap too, I can spent half of the price and eat better from night market. The noodle soup also tasted with tons of MSG. I just not like it at all. Also, make sure you are ready to take a shower before you get into this restaurant, after eaten in there, those BBQ smell just covered up the whole body, it just a smell of smoke and burned oil. This is more Chinese style BBQ which I like, however, I know that there is often confusion as to the type of BBQ and whether this is fusion. I am putting the argument at rest that this is Chinese. The service was slow. I saw other dishes take time getting out of the kitchen so it may be just the kitchen staff. They were polite and friendly so I didn't hold it too much against them, however, something to consider that the slowness seems like to be the norm. If you're a meat lover, go for the lamb skewers!! You won't be disappointed. We ordered lamb, beef, chicken wings, sausage and bun skewers and the lamb was so delicious we had to get seconds! Skewers are reasonably priced and a pitcher of kokanee is only $12.80. Its a perfect place to have a few pints with your friends while enjoying delicious skewers. The food here is very delicious but the service, not so much. Staff are not very fluent in English and will only speak Chinese unless you repeat your request several times in English. The seating is rather uncomfortable. The music is overly loud. We unfortunately sat right under the TV and they cranked up the volume. We told them to lower it but they didn't lower it too much and said that it can't go any lower making the ambience super uncomfortable. The worst part of it all is that we weren't informed of their rule of cash only under $50. There were no signs in the entrance or around the restaursnt indicating that and we were only told so when we were paying. The sign that said so was found by the cashier and in Chinese only. My family and I came here for some late night greasy grub after shopping at the mall. This location is a little smaller than the Burnaby location but the menu looked the same. The volume was cranked up a little too high for my liking making it hard to chat over the blaring Mandarin music. Service was fast and the food came out quick. Everything tasted fine, but it seemed like they cheaped out on the meat on the skewers and it wasn't hot enough. I assumed all the meat were already precooked and they just warm it up upon ordering. You're going to have to get someone's attention, and you won't get waited on hand and foot. Every person I flagged down was responsive and zippy... and yes, it's loud and clangorous in there. Canto pop blaring on multiple TVs. If you don't dig it, go to a Red Lobster. But the food! Lots of great skewers. The cumin spiced lamb was a standout. Also had a mixed pot of tripe, squid, and fish ball in a serious vat of Chili sauce, which was not shy on the "ma la" (hot and numbing). Perhaps the intestinal reaction relentless onslaught of Chili and Sichuan peppercorns was misinterpreted by the uninitiated as "food poisoning" by some of the reviewers here. If you've never eaten this kind of food before and consider the use of salt and pepper to be "spicy", fo yourself a favour and put a roll of bathroom tissue in the freezer before you leave for dinner. For every yin, there needs to be a yang, and there are some great cold dishes too. Loved the black wood ear fungus. Crisp and cool with a black vinegar dressing. First time going to this restaurant and I felt compelled to write my first EVER review. I didn't read any reviews before going and had no idea what kind of food would be served. Once I read the menu, I realized that this restaurant is not suitable for families with children who can't eat spicy food. Almost 80% of the food are heavily spiced, and the noodles in soup that are not spicy are in lamb broth which most kids won't like. We ended up ordering white rice, yam chips and codfish in black bean sauce with special instruction not to make it spicy at all. The skewers are relatively pricey and you have to order at least 5 per item. So we ordered the lamb special and the beef. When the skewers came, they were covered in spices and you cannot tell apart the taste of beef or lamb since they had so much spices on them. The meats are of low quality, very chewy and dry. IMO they are the worst skewers. The only way to tell the beef and lamb apart is that the lamb skewers were even harder to chew due to the hard fibers in them. After trying these skewers, I feel that the pricing was very unreasonable for such low quality meat and taste. When the codfish came on a hot plate with massive amount of black bean covering the whole fish, I noticed the little amounts of luncheon meat, quail eggs, and noodles we ordered extra, each item was charged quite a lot for such cheap food and little quantities. We were told to wait till the dish boiled before eating, however, upon boiling, the sauce became extremely salty because of the black bean and the noodles became unedible since it had absorbed the sauce. We ordered a jug of fresh squeezed orange juice to go with all these meat. But when I tasted it, it was 30% juice, and 70% water plus sugar. It tasted nothing like fresh squeezed orange juice! So I asked the waitress about it and I saw a woman not wearing uniform and I assumed she was the "boss lady". They charged $9 for a small jug. Boss lady explained to me that their machine cannot squeeze enough juice out of the oranges and they are only charging $9, so they can't be 100% real juice. Maybe it's just me, I have been to many restaurants, wherever I went and ordered freshly squeezed orange juice, I had received one. I felt cheated when they said it's freshly squeezed, but it tasted worse and less "orangey" than the orange juice you get from supermarkets. So at the end, we returned that orange juice and stuck with water. If I were to have one nice thing to say about this place is the waitress was still smiling and providing service after my complaint about the orange juice. Food was decent, good place to go to if you just want to dig in with a group of friends and have some beer. The reason I'm giving 2 stars is because of it's horrible service... the whole time my group and I were there, no one would come ask us if we needed anything and whenever we waved a person down they would look at us and pretend they didn't see us. We got quite annoyed so we decided to just finish eating and leave as quickly as possible. We decided to tip around 7% considering the food was decent and we had no service.
