Paella ($29) and baked tofu with mole sauce ($19) entrees were both wonderful. Paella was stuffed with local lobster, perhaps reflecting recent over supply of the popular crustacean. House salad was a disappointing why bother (Are you sure there is dressing on this salad?) Excellent wine list. Bartender's long white beard was a blast out of ZZ Top. Plus President Obama and Michelle ate here two years ago, the president also enjoying the paella. read more

Food and Service at the Havanna was good. Food wise, the menu was interesting and modern. Everything had a light South American/Cuban touch to it which made it an enjoyable and differentiated dining experience at Bar Habour. The chef also provided some (free) starters of smoked mussels which was amazing. Dessert, however, while tastes okay, was too heavy (and too big). It would be nice it were much lighter. Outstanding dinners tonight. My wife had the Beef tenderloin which was grilled with a light glaze that had hints of vanilla and coffee...it was excellent. It was placed on a bed of mashed root vegetables and had a spicy Latin style salsa alongside. She loved it. The mussels appetizer was unbelievably amazing!!!! Had to be the best mussels and sauce combo I've ever had! You could feel the delicious explosion of favor in your mouth getting bigger and bigger with every bite!!!! Amazing!!!! Dip the bread in the sauce too!!! You won't be sorry!!! One of the best meals I've ever had!! I had the rack of lamb and it was absolutely amazing. My family also had the tuna and filet and they were all delicious. It will definitely be a memorable meal. Our party of 8 including three small children were 10 to 15 minutes late to our reservation. In fact, we were on time but their bar next door failed to direct us to the restaurant. The owner/manager refused to sit us inside because we were late and instead forced us to sit at the patio, despite the fact that the restaurant was basically empty at that point. The kids were getting cold, so when asked again, the owner basically asked us to leave if not happy. We are Asian Americans, and certainly I do not want to make condemning accusations based on a single experience. Nothing about the whole experience, however, made sense. It was clear, at least to me, that every action and words from this owner that night was to discourage us to be there. We left and had a good meal at another restaurant. I will say, however, that whether it was plain ignorance, lack of common sense, or purposeful discrimination, actions of this very unpleasant owner temporarily ruined our vacation. Our young children were equally bewildered, and we made a point to make this experience a learning lesson on human ignorance, bigotry, and pitiful narrow mindedness. read more

Bland, poorly prepared, heavily salted - waste of time & calories. Sent the first dish back, lobster was tough, chewy and didn't taste fresh (maybe frozen?). Paella was mushy, soup was salt-bomb awful and my spouse's meal was simply tasteless and overcooked. The manager (wears a dirty baseball cap & thick framed glasses) was busy terrorizing the wait-staff and refused to take our complaints. We left without eating & walked across the street - for a fabulous meal with the best lobster roll appetizer we've had! My best advice - have a drink at the bar, enjoy the music (which can also be somewhat spotty) & eat somewhere else. There are a lot of great places with great food and great attitude in Bar Harbor - Havana does not make the cut. Never again. read more

Phenomenal! We decided to venture away from the many lobster rolls and lobsters we had all weekend and we're so happy we did! This restaurant is bigger than we thought. There is a formal dining room inside, and outdoor area with lights, another room with a bohemian, outdoorsy feel, and the outdoor grill around the side. We were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and definitely recommend asking for the back room next to the outdoor patio. The smoked provolone appetizer with chorizo was amazing - a must have! The paella was beyond flavorful and fresh, and the chicken was great!! Friends had the lobster and haddock special and loved them! All plates were empty! Service was great too! This place is off the beaten path. This a long overdue yelp review for me (we were there about a year ago).... so forgive me for not being more detailed. To start, the waiter brought us a little tomato/jalapeno skewer. I thought it was freaking amazing. Super spicy. I could tell a lot of other people around us didn't feel the same way I did though- maybe it was too spicy for them? Apparently the waiter noticed how much I enjoyed mine, because he promptly brought me a small plate with a couple more. We enjoyed a couple mojitos and the mixed grill appetizer to start. Both were delicious- but as a caution, the mixed grill could have been a meal in and of itself. I got the hanger steak with chimichurri for my entrée. It was superb. What really stood out for me is how great the service is there. We had a great time. read more

I would say Havana was my family's best dining experience in Bar Harbor. I had the "Periodista" cocktail which I highly recommend to start. This restaurant was amazing food. In a tourist town, our expectations were very low. The blueberry cornbread with Maine blueberries with the cinnamon butter was so good but the genius was the multi-grain bread dipped in the chili oil olive oil. The lobster cake was delicious with the grilled avocado on the bottom with a delicious smoky vinaigrette to break up the richness. My daughter's filet was cooked to perfection and the mashed potatoes were very interesting with the coconut oil instead of butter. The paella.....there are not enough words. The texture of the rice was perfect. There was scallops, lobster, shrimp, mussels, chicken and chorizo. The seafood was beyond fresh in there and very generous. You would get full only if you ate all the seafood. The crispy rice on top was perfection. It's a lot of food so you can definitely share it and both be beyond full. Let me start by saying the real MVP of the night was the water boy. This guy should be working for the Patriots or something because he was constantly refilling my glass the moment I had drank even a quarter of my cup. Really cute place overall. I'm giving it 3 stars but might upgrade to 4 if I go back and try some more items. They start by giving you some bread with a few different options of butter, spreads, and oils. They had a delicious spicy chili oil that went great with the bread. I started with the farm salad that was pretty good. My wife had that mushroom egg rolls that were also tasty. The waiter was very friendly and the place had a nice romantic atmosphere. So why the 3 star review? We both felt that our entrees were good but not great. I had the seafood paella and it was pretty good but just didn't seem to wow me. My wife had the chicken enchilada and it was good but again, didn't seem to wow her. We both wished the menu had a few more options on it but tough to complain because it wasn't exactly a small menu, perhaps they just didn't seem to have anything we were really interested in that night. In terms of price, it was a bit expensive but definitely not outrageous. Perhaps we just expected a little bit more out of the place since it was so highly rated on the Internet. We would definitely be willing to give it another shot because it was still a good experience overall. read more

We had a wonderful experience at Havana to celebrate my boyfriend's 30th birthday. I had called ahead to request whether they could do something special, and they went above and beyond to help us celebrate the occasion. When he was away at the bathroom, the manager came over to confirm everything, along with our waitress. The service was all-around incredibly impressive. I have a gluten allergy, and our waitress Meredith was so kind and informative about what all my options were. She double-checked everything with the chef, and I was excited to find out I could have many of the entrees and specials! They were extremely accommodating and celiac-friendly, and Meredith made the whole experience comfortable. In addition to fantastic service, the food was delicious! Everything was cooked to perfection and flavorful- from the mussels appetizer, the seafood paella and the poached haddock (our main entrees), and the locally made blueberry basil icecream that we ordered for dessert, we thoroughly enjoyed everything! The ambience was romantic and intimate, perfect for celebrating a special occasion, while still feeling casual and relaxed. Food was good but for the price, I wasn't that impressed. Sangria was okay and I tried the paella every was raving about but found it a bit salty and not that much seafood. The staff was extremely attentive, but I guess that is what you're paying for, right? Portions are a bit small so if you're really hungry, I'd recommend going elsewhere. I've visited this bar twice now, and wanted to like it better this year because I had good memories from my last experience. First, I'll say that everything I've ever had here has tasted delicious, I would say my main reservation here is the portions. They just seemed a little stingy. We ordered the bread basket, yes you have to order bread, and it came with 4 pieces of bread. This was not nearly enough to sop up the 3 spreads/oils that are served with the bread. I also ordered the marinated olives. The olives were abundant, and really tasty, but were served with 2 pieces of toast and 2 pieces of manchego. When I asked for more toast, 2 more pieces were served...that's borderline insulting, right? I would be willing to try Havana again, because again, the food is good and the outside bar is perfect in summer, but I'll be hoping service is more generous next time. read more

So i like to drink bloody beers. A cheap domestic (budweiser) with 1/4 bloody mary mix. The beer cost 3.75 and apparently the 1/4 of mix cost 6 dollars? We were at sewards earlier and the gal didnt charge anything extra, same with cottage st. and lompoc. the dude at lompoc laughed out loud when i told him the tale. i bartend back home so im not off my rocker on this one. oysters were fantastic, service was quite nice. The bartender is a friendly guy and takes extreme effort in producing his drinks. I recommend trying the mojitos! They are one of the best that I've ever had! I had the beef tenderloin and it was one of the best cuts of steak that I've ever had. The incredible mix of flavors that go into the meat and the accompanying pieces in this entree are superb! We went to Havana after I found it by chance here on Yelp. The place is very nicely decorated and elegant. I ordered a mojito. As the waitress was approaching us with it stroked me odd that it did not look clear in consistency, then I tasted it. It was bitterly nasty. The waitress offered to get me another one. I said I was ok. The hostess the approached me and asked me if there was another way she can have the mojito prepared to my likeness. I told her that it should be prepared with white rum. They did and it was delicious. We ordered a couple of appetizers and one entree. The appetizers were finger licking good. We ordered the paella as the entree. Needless to say we almost licked the plate clean. It was the best we've ever had. The waitress knew we were sharing and brought to us alredy divided. The paella was nesttle in this lovely shell made with wonton dough. I mean I can go on on an on. However, I will leave with the most suprising thing about the whole evening. When the bill came I realized I was not charge for the mojito which was very gracious of them. We would would back to this place again...if we ever find ourselves back in this beautiful place called Bar Harbor. read more

Located a few blocks off the main strip that is littered with gift shops and items that you happen to only need because you're on vacation, Havana is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The layout is kind of odd.. if you're not seated in the main dining area, then you get led out the door, down a ramp to another room. I suspect everything will have a better flow once the patio (which looks fantastic!) and the covered dining area is opened. There was a man playing music in the main room, which was nice and missed in the forgotten room we were seated in. The server came over with small bites, complements of the chef. Our bites were some sort of tuna crostini -- soggy and didn't have me wanting more, but HEY it's free! CRAB CAKES -- Better than some of the crab cakes that I had in Maryland! Good sear on the outside and not too mushy on the inside, taste was on point and the slaw added a nice crunch. SCALLOPS -- 4 large grilled scallops accompanied by deep fried plaintains tossed with bacon. Scallops were cooked nicely and the citrus gremolata and salsa verde was yummy. COCHINITA PIBIL -- Pulled pork with swiss chard, bacon, and rice in a banana leaf. Pork was a little dry and the pickled onion that accompanied the dish was way too vinegary. Beware, the salsa on the side is SPPPPPICCCCYYYY. Drinks were good, albeit small and not really a good value when you compare it to drinks at Side Street Cafe. Wine menu was too long, made me think the place was trying way to hard to be more upscale than it was. We found out about this place by asking a local restaurant owner where she and her husband go for their fancy nights out. Havana did not disappoint. The flavors are a lot more interesting and innovative than anything else you're likely to get in Bar Harbor (the fancy hotel in town, by comparison, has a dish titled simply "lobster meat"). The wine steward is new in 2007 and came up with a great Mettler Petit Syrah. The outdoor seating looks pleasant, but maybe too cold for women in skimpy evening dress. read more

Well, let's see. it's a very nice small Cuban restaurant recommended by people I was in the conference with. It has a nice bar area in conjunction to the dinning area, in case you need to wait for your table. We had the Fish of the day with mango sauce and it was good. Love the presentation of the food and also the atmosphere. I still think with the price we should get better food though. Always a warm welcome -my husband and I love this place. This week we enjoyed an amazing chorizo and fried bread appetizer - who would think fried cubes of bread could be so fabulous! Well, that was out-done by my entree - the Latin Lobster. Tender butter poached tail and claws, beautifully arranged on a plate with asparagus and greens through the center - with a roasted corn bisque and sweet potato empanda on the other side. I wanted to lick the plate the bisque was so good. He ordered the ancho rubbed tuna - which I did not try. It was a bit salty for him - the only complaint of the night. We ended the meal with dessert - a flourless chocolate torte - rich and dense and filling enough for two - too bad we did not know that before we each ordered it! How lucky for us - the menu is due to change this week - and we are going back again on Friday night. read more
