I was really worried when I heard Helen was leaving, but the new owner kept most of the menu of authentic Chinese and expanded some of the Korean options it seems. The food is still just as delicious and the interior got a very much needed update. We had dry fried green beans (干煸四季豆), soup dumplings (小笼包), and Sichuan style fish (烤鱼). Just another Chinese restaurant, nothing really special. For a person who has been to many Chinese restaurants, I would say the food here is on the greasy/unhealthy spectrum. Don't get me wrong---if you don't usually pay attention to these aspects then you'll enjoy the dishes. The taste is average to pretty good. The atmosphere is not great, there's no windows. The dish I would recommend is the Mongolian beef---it was pretty flavorful and not too greasy. The service was great and our waiter was wonderful. The prices were a tad bit higher than usual. They presented us with a complimentary appetizer of four small dishes (spicy cucumber, sesame brocolli, mung beans and a potato dish). All four were very tasty. Went to this restaurant because 1) only in town for one night, 2) it was snowing, and 3) it was close to the hotel. Boy was I glad I did. The location is right behind a Waffle House, so it's not very visible from the road. When you first walk in, you will be surprised at how big it is inside, but not by the average decor; obviously their focus is in on the food, not the ambiance. Even though it was a snowy Sunday evening, there were several full tables of people obviously enjoying themselves. The menu is extensive, and has some very authentic recipes involving parts of animals that I would avoid even if I wasn't a vegetarian. I was in the mood for something spicy, and I ordered the Cauliflower with Peppers. Presentation was excellent, taste was phenomenal! Spicy, but not too spicy, and so flavorful that I ate the whole damn thing. Vegetables, right? How bad could it be. I have no regrets - I will eat the whole damn thing again next time. I've been here a few times and will return again. Helen and her husband are always here when we've stopped in. Sometimes there's a delivery person and one or two of the wait staff. Orders are always correct. Helen usually stops by the table at some point to chat and find out which part of town we live in. (Good way to find out where the customers are driving from.) On our most recent visit we had the pot stickers. They were crisped very nicely and so hot that I burned the roof of my mouth. Nice to know they haven't been sitting around all day under a heat lamp! We tried the Yangzou Fried Rice. Imagine a healthier version of fried rice and that's what you get. No soy sauce for flavoring. It has beef and shrimp, lots of egg and some kind of green thing (bok choy?) in it. Lastly, we had the chicken pad thai. Very flavorful and with just a hint of heat. Very good. Yes, the service here is not obtrusive and they only come back once or twice to check on you but it's nice to be able to go somewhere to eat and have a conversation with friends. We went on Sat. morning! It got pretty busy for lunch and we were seated pretty fast. It was sort of difficult to talk to some of the servers and to ask a question or order more food as they were running around and looked very busy. Lamb Bowl- Very big and tasty. It had lamb bones and the broth was really good and had a very very strong lamb aroma and taste. It also contained noodles and other goodies like cilanto. Pork Dumplings-These were probably my favorite. I liked these a lot! They gave us around 10 for an order and it was yum. The stuffing was pretty good. Xiao Long Bao- These are OK, I've had xiao long bao a few other times before at different places and these were just OK. Most of the soup leaked out before I was able to put it in my mouth though ): Beef Dumplings- These were also just OK. I liked how all the dumplings were handmade by the owner and they gave us a good amount for an order. The handmade dumplings took longer to come out but that's okay. Oh bummer! I visited Helen's this past week and learned that she sold the business and retired a few months ago. The whole atmosphere has changed and the menu/food are on the downward spiral. I placed a pick-up order of Shrimp dumplings and crispy salt and pepper shrimp (long-standing usual order). When I got to the restaurant, the man at the register said "oh, we do not have shrimp dumplings any more on the menu...only pork or chicken, so I changed your order to chicken dumplings". I told him that would not work because we do not eat meat (only vegetables and shrimp). He yelled over his shoulder at someone packing my items up and told them to take the dumplings back to the kitchen. When I looked at the menu (which is now tiny compared to the past), it no longer includes shrimp dumplings. The question I have is "why" didn't the person who took my order over the phone, tell me that when I placed the order? The man at the register said that when Helen and her husband retired and sold the business, that the dumplings that they used to make are now being replaced with ones they buy (hence, the pork and chicken limitations). So, I left with only my order of crispy salt and pepper shrimp. WOW, was I ever disappointed. It was not crispy (like it used to be), it had NONE of the wonderful Chinese spices that used to be on top of the shrimp. No crispy fried jalapenos. The shrimp seem more like they have been rolled in a fried chicken batter...it was all wrong! I am sad to say that this is the end of an era of authentic Chinese food. Helen will be missed and I won't be back. This will turn out to be just another ordinary run-of-mill "Americanized" Chinese restaurants that dot the city of Columbus. Went to try the Xiao Long Bao. It was underwhelming. The skin was too think, the meat inside had little flavor and the soup inside was nearly nonexistent. To top off there was no ginger on the side and no spoons served to properly eat with. It seemed to me the actual dumpling was not homemade. The other food ordered was good. Good flavor and good portions. So a good meal can be had. It's just that if you hoped that Xiao Long Bao could be had in Columbus you will be disappointed. We were frequent customers when the previous owner owned it. Haven't been there since the new owner took over which was almost a year. It was a busy night yesterday and the waiters were slow and inexperienced. For example, do not light the portable stove before put it on our table. It's a safety hazard. He literally lit it up near the kitchen and move a firing stove all the way to the end of the hall. And it's very hard to put a big heavy tray with a whole fish and some other food on a firing stove with max fire setting. He could put one entree plate and 3 rice bowls on his serving tray but he came to our table 3 times for 1 plate and 4 bowls of rice. The food came pretty slow. 27 minutes until the first dish came out. We understand that peak hours could be a little bit crazy for a restaurant, but to be honest, training is definitely needed for the waiters. Here are some good things: The food was pretty good. Went for dinner on Sunday night. I have been wanting to try Soup Dumplings (xio long bao) after reading an article on them. The ones at Helens were not right. they are suppose to be soup filed-like pork steam dumplings. These had the pork but did not have any liquid. What a disappointment! Do NOT spend the money for these. The table next to ours got the suimai dumplings that look like they had the same filling and looked like a better option. The Chinese broccoli was perfect....just the right amount of cooking and a very light sauce with garlic. Just like I have in southeast Asia and have never been able to duplicate at home. We will return to try their Sichuan dishes. But for now.....1 star for dumpling and 5 for broccoli. read more

I've heard a lot about this place via a local Instagram feed, and the food has always looked delicious. It met my expectations. First, the place is tucked away in a questionable part of town, off the beaten path. Don't let that dissuade you. And yes, it used to be a strip club. Again, persevere. The closest comparison in Columbus for me is Sunflower on Sawmill Road, in terms of authenticity and just plain un-commercialized-ness. The entire place is very plain vanilla, but it's very functional. Lots of tables of different sizes, booths around the central "area" (where a pole was removed, perhaps?). There's a piano in the front waiting area, which was being used for an impromptu Chinese sing-along when I arrived. The lunch special is inexpensive, filling, and fast. The food was good: the sauce tasted authentic, the vegetables were crisp and fresh, and the rice and egg roll were as expected. There's a more plentiful dinner/authentic menu with much more interesting dishes; the lunch menu just has the old standards. The wait staff was attentive and efficient. They give the feeling that they genuinely care bout your experience and aren't looking down on a group of white people invading a very authentic asian spot. read more

I am so disappointed. Apparently it is under new ownership. And I guess that means entire new menu and none of the dishes everyone raved about. I came here for SOUP dumplings. They didn't even seem to understand what I was asking for. Our waitress didn't speak any English. As in not enough English to explain it was a new owner and new menu. Another employee came over to explain and we sadly picked other items. We ordered two appetizers and three mains. Two of the three never showed up. We told them we were still waiting for two dishes they said it would be out shortly. 20 minutes later I asked again and they said that they delivered the two dishes to the wrong table. We gave up and asked for our check since we had already been there an hour and a half. They also had coupons for a free dish which I gave with our check but they didn't give us a free dish!! They should have given us something free for the mix up, and/or the coupon, but we got nothing. I didn't have the energy to try to explain that our whole meal should have been free and we left. This was such a disappointment. I can't believe they kept the same name but none of the dishes are the same. The food we had was pretty good and I am sad we didn't even get to try most of what we ordered. We also had our 15 month old with us, so an hour and a half meal and not getting most of our food at a basic Chinese place just doesn't cut it. Every time I'm in New York, I love riding the 7 to the end of the line in Flushing and going to a dumpling house where English is nowhere to be found. It's one of my favorite experiences in the world. Well, back here in Columbus, there is no 7 train and no Flushing, but there IS an authentic Chinese restaurant with some kick-ass dumplings! Four of us decided to load up on a freezing, snowy Friday evening and make the trek to Northland to check out Helen Asia Kitchen - which is hilariously located in an old strip club. Oh yeah, the mirrors are still there too. I knew the food was going to be amazing as soon as we walked in. The place was packed - and not with people who looked like me. I was in heaven. On that note, I need to point out that the service is more authentically Chinese, not the expected American service. What do I mean by that? It's all about the food, not a syrupy-sweet service experience. You might have to wait a while, you probably won't get a refill, and you probably won't be treated like a king (or queen). Accept it for what it is, and don't let it ruin your dinner. As for the food, I'll quote Susan R's review since we went together: "We decided to eat family-style so we could try a little bit of everything. We ordered the xiao long bao, the shao mai dumplings, Chinese broccoli, General Tso's chicken (yeah, I know--it's the one Americanized dish I really love, and theirs was almost as good as Yau's Chinese Bistro's), shrimp pad Thai, a scallion pancake, and various little appetizers. That's right - Chinese food and booze. Cheers! They have a piano and you can get Mr. Helen's to play. (Look, we don't know his name but he's really cute and we just call him Mr. Helen's because he's the only man we ever see there) Mr. Helen's plays wonderfully and sings opera while you eat. THAT'S RIGHT - HE SINGS OPERA WHILE PLAYING THE PIANO WHILE YOU DRINK BOOZE AND HAVE CHINESE FOOD. I challenge you to top that in Columbus. For the food: Get Xiao Long Buns to start. Order early. Don't eat anything else before they come. Their flavor is delicate and if you eat anything first, they will have very little flavor. If you eat them first... they are DELISH. I prefer the Hot & Sour Soup. It's always delish! Crab Rangoon. Theirs are huge and delish. Get the Vegetable Pad Tai. You may be tempted to get beef - but don't. You might want Chicken - don't do it. You might like Shrimp - and it's not bad... but trust me here - for the best flavor experience - just get the veggie pad tai. You're welcome. Lastly - you can really share your plates with several people. So, for a party of 4, I recommend 2 or so entrees and split them. For 5 or 6 - just get 3 or so. And the Xiao Long Buns. It was late and I so happen to find this place, not really expecting much. But came here sat and ordered their soup dumplings, some beef & lamb skewers, and lastly the crispy salt & pepper shrimp. The soup dumplings were tiny but tasty. But once the dumpling were cooled down, it wasn't the same tasting anymore. The skewers were good, I've tried other skewer places and it's comparable. The portion were a little smaller but that's ok. And the shrimps was really good, it tasted really fresh. Overall, if I ever come back to Columbus and get hungry late at night. OK, here's what you need to know. A) Yes, it's in a converted strip club. There are a LOT of mirrors around. If that bothers you, order carry out. No one will blame you. B) Xiao Long Bao. The best and possibly only soup dumplings in Columbus are delicious, but you have to eat them quickly to get the full experience. Certainly worth the trip. C) The Chinese menu ("specials") is where it's at. We went for an order of twice fried noodles with pork and shrimp and an order of bamboo shoots with pork and both were excellent. The bamboo shoots are actually fresh, not out of a can, and the difference in texture and taste is notable. I'd say that in general the service has been quite good, but there were a couple of occasional language barrier moments. I think this is the most authentic Chinese place in Columbus. In that sense there is really no explaining needed. The food is absolutely terrific for those who have a palette for authentic Chinese food. What's interesting is they serve cuisines from all parts of China, so you can try a little bit of everything. The updated menu provides pictures of dishes that sound too exotic which is fantastic to those who are not familiar with authentic Chinese. I do need to warn you though, there is very minimum service. Really, the owners are really really nice people but they don't subscribe to American style restaurant service. Tried the dim sum today which we probably shouldn't have. Normally dim sum is served on weekends but my wife insisted.. We order the wings for appetizer which was pretty good crispy and not overly fried... ordered the fried spring rolls which the the filling was all mushy didnt like them I couldn't recognize what was inside it.. Also did the shrimp crepes were pretty disappointing since 1. they used baby salad shrimp instead of the normal 21/25 count or even 1 step smaller 2. The dish was cold and much out of temperature 3. flour crepe seemed very dense and chewy. Pork shu Mai topped again with a small. Salad shrimp tasted very rubbery and very gushy... didn't have the sesame & soy flavor. My wife ordered the sesame seed balls they were the size of marbles maybe just a tad bigger... and they were filled with some Red bean and something else .... not good either... next dish was the spicy wontons which were decent nothing to rave but better than the rest of the items we had.. The wonton soup was also pretty decent... couldn't give 1.5 stars but doesn't really deserve a 2... I popped into Helen's for a lateish dinner the other night. The interior is interesting and definitely different. However once you get past the scruffiness of the place, Helen's service and the food were pretty good. We started with Hot and Sour Soup, which was good, though perhaps a little under-spiced. They do not overdo it on the thickeners, which is nice, too. Then came the Xiolong Buns, soup dumplings. The serving was bigger than I expected with 8 or 9 buns in a bamboo steamer. The buns were not as bloated as what I have had in China, but the taste was pretty much the same, with the warm "soup" when you bite into them. Then we had the boiled duck -- one of the traditional dishes. It is prepared by boiling the duck to cook it, and then plunging it into cold water to congeal the fat. The fatty duck skin is a delicacy -- to some. I did enjoy the meat, which was tender and tasty, like duck should be. To go with the duck, we had the most amazing bok choi. Served with a garlic sauce, the flavor was absolutely superb. This dish alone made the trip worthwhile. Fantastic. They have a full bar, and they have Tsingtao to complete your meal. The other day, I had a hankerin' for Chinese food. Not just Chinese food, but xiao long bao and Chinese broccoli, which I haven't had since we visited New York last year. The buzz around the internets is that Helen's is the place to go--maybe the ONLY place to go--for xiao long bao. So, a group of us hit up Helen's, curious to see if her food stood up to the buzz. If I were going to rate Helen's on the food only, I'd give it five stars. I can't say how authentic or not authentic the food is, as I've never been to China, nor lived anywhere with a real Chinatown, but to my American (gorilla? cough) palate, the food was great. (I *don't* like overly Americanized, syrupy-sauced Chinese food that you'd get at Panda Express or Mark Pi, or at a Chinese buffet. I have an American palate, but it does have its limits.) We decided to eat family-style so we could try a little bit of everything. We ordered the xiao long bao, the shao mai dumplings, Chinese broccoli, General Tso's chicken (yeah, I know--it's the one Americanized dish I really love, and theirs was almost as good as Yau's Chinese Bistro's), shrimp pad Thai, a scallion pancake, and various little appetizers. I don't expect the same kind of service in an Asian restaurant as I do in an American-style one, but we never had our water refilled, and getting alcohol was quite an adventure. Still, the servers were friendly and accommodating, despite the fact that they were clearly busier than they expected to be. Helen herself was on the floor, taking orders and bringing out food. Our server was able to split our check effectively without making it overly complicated, which we appreciated. The things I would have changed: more water refills (please!); getting our to-go orders for absent menfolk in a little earlier, as we had to wait a long time after our meal was done to get them (we told them when we were ordering that we were going to have to-go orders, but they didn't get put in until we were done eating); a drink menu at the table to streamline our imbibing of alcohol. This is my second time here. The food here is still great, but the service is just terrible. When we came here there were only two other tables, so they weren't busy. Nobody asked to get us drinks. When we waved down one of the waitresses to get some drinks, her response was, "Did you ask your own server? We take care of our own tables, so you'll have to ask him." Wtf really? I had high hopes for Helens kitchen since I was looking for a good soup dumpling place in Columbus but I was sadly let down. There was no soup in the dumplings and they were kind of dry. Overall the food was mediocre. We ordered the Xiao long bao (soup dumplings), salt and pepper shrimp (seafood didn't taste fresh), hot and sour soup, and pea sprout stir fry. Quality was low especially for the prices. They also add a tip to your bill despite the fact that it was only two people at our table which was kind of off putting. Helen's Asian Kitchen is the best Chinese in the city, for real. We've been here so often and had such great food that I thought I'd already written this five-star review! First, of course - the famous decor. Helen's is a former strip club. Rather than remove the accutrements and add plain decor, they kept the bar and the mirrors and the recessed lighting. Unique surroundings. There is a piano set up in the center of the restaurant, and if you're lucky, you'll be serenaded by "Mr. Helen" for a few songs. (The kind you hear in a Chinese buffet? Those! Live!) The staff here are friendly, and Helen herself is bustling around, too. Now, for the food. There is an American-style menu, with pedestrian staples. Then...there is the MENU. Picture heavy, featuring anything you might want to have, and usually in more than one style. Duck, lamb, pork, chicken, beef, fish, shrimp, squid, tofu, etc. - their beer duck is outstanding, as well as their lamb. They also have organ meats like liver, kidney and lungs. I've had the pork liver & kidneys. I got the side-eye, for sure. Helen's sauces are so rich, and the cuts so tender - it's hard to get something here that isn't close to the best you've had. Oh, and the dumplings - YAAAAAAS. On this most recent trip, we tried out some middle-of-the-road dishes: twice-cooked pork (the sauce...the tender pork belly, mmm); double-fried pork chops, which had a "flavor layer" and crunchy bits sprinkled on them, and the spicy lamb with lots of cumin. Goodness. If you're looking for really, REALLY good and authentic Chinese, this is the place to be in Columbus. Absolutely one of the best Chinese food places in Columbus, if not the best. Get the stir fried cauliflower and use the spicy chili oil that comes with it on everything. That's mandatory. I recommend Helen's home made dumplings, pork with cilantro, spicy dumplings, pretty much everything. read more

The sign outside says grand opening. The front desk clerk at the Super 8 says the food is outstanding, that's good enough for me! I choose the special of Garlic eggplant w/brown rice (8.95), add a dollar extra for brown rice. It was delicious and plentiful. I took over half my plate back to the hotel (thank you Super 8 for providing a fridge and microwave In every room.) and ate it the next day for lunch. The waitress was very attentive almost to a fault, constantly asking if we were good and asking of we needed anything. But when we wanted the bill, she was nowhere to be found, waiting almost 15 minutes for her to bring the check. Over all it was very good. read more
