Food so good, I had to break my years long review hiatus. (TL;DR--skip to 3rd section) It's not news that the Vietnamese food in NYC is a bit....lacking. It's a comment that is frequently uttered, usually by Vietnamese people, persons from that West Coast wonderland, or anyone from Houston. However, there seems to be a surge of establishments from the land of the ascending dragon opening around the city. Hello Saigon is one of them and they are a standout! From fancy AF Hanoi House (their prices make my soul hurt) to Madam Vo's (their prices also hurt), there are now a few good choices to satisfy any sudden pho cravings. I've now tried all 3 places and Hello Saigon is my favorite. They're the perfect combo of price (it's actually reasonable), deliciousness, & authenticity. Authentic Bc the workers and owners are Vietnamese, the menu is in Vietnamese, and you can ORDER in Vietnamese. That last bit is probably only useful to a few people, but I love it. ORDER: the cha gio, pho, & cafe su da. The cha gio is perfectly crispy, filled with pork, wood ear mushrooms & vermicelli--like how my mom makes it. The pho is clean & flavorful, doesn't skimp on the meat, & comes with fresh basil that doesn't look like it was beaten to death. The cafe su da is just the fucking best. Just get it & drink it & feel the power of caffeine course through your veins. I've also had the bun bo hue but would recommend skipping it. It's not as well done as the pho. Highlights: those awkward Christmas lights, & the 90's/2000's Vietnamese "pop" playlist from YouTube brings back all the memories for me. Since visiting the 1st time, I already followed up with a 2nd visit within the week and the West Village isn't exactly close to me. Good Pho. Although the bowl is a little smaller than the restaurants I've been to, I still left satisfied. I got extra noodles and meat, still smaller portions than most places but enough. The broth was less cinnamon in flavor but I tasted more beef. Location is just far enough from work to get away but close enough to walk so I'm happy. The environment was pleasant, not overcrowded at lunch and the food came out quickly. Service was pretty good too. Straight forward and to the point. Came here, because I found this place through my Allset app. I was craving pho, so I ordered the pho with beef and really enjoyed it! The prices were really fair and i loved that the ambiance was super chill, but clean. Kind of reminded me of some of the pho places I would eat in Dallas. The broth was so flavorful and the noodles were the perfect texture I would highly recommend checking this place out! It's just as good as the super popular pho place nearby, but you won't have to deal with a crazy wait. The restaurant was also really spacious and the service was very nice and accommodating. Overall would recommend if you are looking for a decently priced bowl of pho in the greenwich village area. They also provide quick service and the ambiance is very casual! Menu items in order of deliciousness: ***** Salt and Pepper Soft Shell Crabs - The best thing in the menu. Delectable! You'll be fighting over every piece. ***** The Pho Hello Saigon (Beef Combination Pho Dac Biet) - Not quite California level deliciousness but it's the best that Manhattan's got as far as I can tell. Hence the 5star is for New York. They use legitimate pho noodles, not flat rice noodles. The beef tastes fresh and the broth is very nourishing. The tendon beef balls are very tasty and that is an uncommon compliment coming from me. *Pro Tip* If you order pho for delivery or take out, ask for RAW pho noodles. Why? Cooked noodles tend to stick to each other like a cake and makes for an unpleasant non slurpy eating experience. Simply bring broth to a boil and cook noodles for 1min or less, and you'll have perfect pho in the comfort of your own home. ***** The Grilled Grape Leaves Banh Hoi (Bo La Lot Banh Hoi) - Another favorite. Steamed angel hair rice vermicelli with grilled beef wrapped in grape leaf. The texture of the angel hair vermicelli is something to definitely try if you've never had it before. Let the vermicelli soak up some sweet fish sauce (Nuoc Cham) and eat together with beef, lettuce and herbs. ***** Grilled Meatball Banh Hoi (Nem Nuong) - I would describe this more as Vietnamese Pork Sausage perhaps, served on steamed angel hair vermicelli. You'll be asking for more! Don't forget the Nuoc Cham dip! **** Summer Rolls - They are generally delicious, why not try them in every flavor? Made with great rice paper for a nice bite. **** Signature Short Rib Pho - Fresh ingredients still and it sure makes a pretty instagram picture, but it simply does not have the same appeal as the combination pho! It is oilier and heavier in comparison. *** Avocado Smoothie - Delicious but inconsistent with sugar level. I think I'll make it a point to ask for less sugar next time. *** Durian Smoothie - Pretty good! ** Soy Bean Milk - It tastes like Yeo's canned soy milk. No home style freshly pressed here. ** Grilled Pork Ban Hoi - Edible but not great. The meat was overdone and tough. * The Wok Seared Cubed Flank Steak (Bo Luc Lac) - Not great, the meat is dry and seasoning is rather off. * Grilled Lemongrass Beef Banh Hoi - Not great either. Amongst all beef dishes, only the Pho is any good. * Spicy Beef and Pork Hue Style Noodle Soup (Bun Bo Hue) - Not good. I've never had it like this before, it's like a sweeter version of Thai Boat Noodle, I felt done with it after a short while because it was so heavy. Typically it's a clear soup with chili oil that tastes lighter. It was not served with shredded lettuce or mint leaves either, but the same vegetables as those that come with pho. The place looks half way between some nice place and some very shady looking place... nonetheless, the food was good, and the prices very fair! We started with the shrimp summer rolls, very fresh and quite huge. Hubby liked. I got the fried pork spring rolls and they were the best I have ever had. So so good. Perfectly seasoned, perfectly crunchy, simple and decadent all at once. This will be my place to get some good rolls!! As for main course we ordered a shrimp low mein like noodle dish, it was great, huge and can easily feed a family of 4. We also ordered the pho. I honestly didn't like it at all, I found it very bland and I never had pho before, so it doesn't make me want to keep exploring the pho route, I thought I would like it because I am a big ramen fan. Although I didn't like the pho, we ordered the special one that came with a huge piece of beef on the bone, the meat was great and I just ended up eating that while the hubs ate the pho with a whole lot of plum sauce in it... haha. Came here because I was in the area and craving some tasty pho so decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed. I got the Pho Hello Saigon and my boyfriend got the Short Rib Pho. Both were delicious. The meatballs in my pho were meh and I was pretty sad to see that none of the pho on their menu included tendon. Why not!? The short rib that came with my boyfriend's pho was very flavorful, tender, and fell right off the bone. The broth is amazing!! I also like that they served hot tea as their default instead of iced water. While the food was good, the prices are a bit high compared to other Vietnamese restaurants (such as those in Chinatown) but given its location, it should be expected. Service was okay. We got what we wanted, but not the quickest even though there were only a few other patrons. read more

I wanted to like this place, especially when I saw a lunch special that was half a banh mi and a bowl of pho for a reasonable price. Turned out it was half a banh mi and half a bowl of pho lol. The banh mi wasn't bad, but was rather small and the pho was devoid of any impactful flavor and also portioned for an oompa loompa. Was able to sample the bun bo hue, but the noodles were overcooked and the flavor didn't have much depth to it. There was a decent amount of meat though, which was nice. The decor is pretty cool and the place has a nice chill vibe with the music they were playing. Waitstaff was also very nice. There's still no "it" place for pho in the city, but I have faith that there will be one day! read more

Pretty standout experience. This place wasn't as busy as Saigon Shack on a Saturday night around 7pm. The people working here were friendly and our food got to us pretty quickly. I had the vegetable pho and my bf had the summer rolls and the hello Saigon pho. I've tried vegetable pho at several other pho places and they either always skimp out on the tofu (which by the way is a super inexpensive protein compared to the meat options) or the veggies. I've never had a veggie pho where I had ample amount of tofu AND vegetables. shocker! I know. So when my bowl came packed with lots of broccoli, snap peas, carrots AND tofu I was pretty much over the moon. My bf's pho also had lots of beef. And the pho soup was amazing. It wasn't too salty but you could tell it's been stewing for a while to give it that depth of flavor. The seafood used was disgusting. It tastes bland and soggy, and too chewy - Like meat that was frozen and refrozen a few times. And the seafood pho broth tasted too strongly of fish oil.. which is also slimey and disgusting. It may look like you get a nice amount of food and everything, but it tastes cheap and old and bland. read more

I had my doubts - there's so many trendy, bad Americanized Vietnamese or just Americanized Asian food in general in NY *coughfishcheekscoughmadamevocough*, that it was easy to put this one amongst them. And a particularly whiter than white friend recommended it (for some reason people think Asian food should be sweet) that I definitely didn't have high hopes. I was so wrong. Hello Saigon is very good. The short rib pho is excellent, the broth flavourful and aromatic, the short rib is tender, with a perfect ratio of pho noodles to soup to meat. Not sure I would eat this for breakfast, when pho is traditionally eaten in Vietnam, because it's a bellyful for sure. Pair it with crispy spring rolls, or the Vietnamese crepe - the tang from the fish dipping sauce with further enhance flavours. Can't wait to try one of their banh mi. I am always on the look for a good Vietnamese Restaurant that matches the one you find in SoCal or in NoVa. Eater and a food critic always does these post of rated Viet eats in the city. Of the list I can say 90% of the authentic eats aren't that 'authentic.' By which I mean a place I can take my mom to and she doesn't cringe at every dish that comes out. Hello Saigon was new to the list and I was optimistic. They boast one of the few Viet restaurants that served Bu Bo Hue. They Yelp reviewers were all like must try! This a spicy beef noodle soup from the central region of Vietnam. It is one of my favorite comfort noodle dish on cold, rainy nights. That said the menu had many of the typical main stay in any Vietnamese menu. The noodles with lemongrass chicken/pork. Spring rolls, fried spring rolls etc. The rainy night we went the special was the Bo La Lot (Beef in Betel Leaf) which is similar to stuffed grape leaves Vietnamese style. This was very good. Nice flavor and grilled with all the side plus rice paper to wrap in leafy greens. The papaya mango salad was good and came with the traditional prawn crackers. So are so good. The Seafood Banh Xeo (Seafood Crispy Crepe) wasn't the typical filling but my sister seemed to like it okay. The vermicelli with grill pork is something hard to mess up in my book. The one dish which I was excited for came out and right off the bat the broth was a disappointment. The broth lacked any flavors and it was way to sweet. The addition of lime and some condiments didn't help it either. It was an overly sugary soup. I ate some of the meat and the other dishes we ordered. Hello Saigon was a hit and miss but generally I would say it was okay. They got somethings right and somethings wrong. I'd probably go again when I need to get my fix for some taste of 'like' home. First time here. Dined in, and ordered pho tai nam and a bahn mi. The food was good, and price was reasonable. However, it took them over 30 minutes to prepare the sandwich. They said the server/waiter forgot to put in the order which is bogus because the server mentioned "your baguette will be out shortly" after bringing my pho. 25 minutes after finishing my pho , no sandwich. To start off, their food is great! My friend and I enjoyed every bit of the food. The service was nice too. I really appreciate the man who was serving us. he was super patient and respectful. i felt so bad for having my friend telling him to remake our vietnamese coffee because it tasted soooo chocolately and thick... it didn't even taste like how viet coffee is supposed to taste like. i then had him switch to a thai iced tea and he was super accommodating of it. but that didn't taste like THAI ICED TEA! it tasted like whole milk and tea. i wanted to gag so bad. it also made me go to the bathroom immediately. it was not good at all. i felt bad he accommodated to making me a different drink that i didn't even ask for a remake. my friend and i tipped him 18% because we felt so bad for having them remake our drinks and it still didn't taste good. honestly, i know what thai iced tea and viet coffee should taste like and i really think they should look up the ingredients or measure the correct amount of condense milk or use the right amount of milk in the thai iced tea. regardless of their not so good drinks, the service was very good. he didn't look annoyed at all. the food was great. inside was clean. they follow covid protocols. they check temperatures too. i would come again but won't order any drinks. their hot tea was good though! read more

I LOVE Vietnamese food but I always have trouble finding a restaurant in NYC that makes it as good or better than my mom does. This place comes super close!! I say close bc my mom's is always #1. The menu is diverse with authentic dishes that keep it real. The atmosphere is homey but modern and they play Vietnamese music (not billboard top 40s). I got the bun bo hue that had heaps of tender beef and yummy pig knuckle (lean bites of pork next to fat for flavor). My boyfriend got the Cha gio bun (vermicelli with egg roll). Honestly. This place is MY JAM. The food is just A+ and is the absolute holy grail and replacement for Saigon Shack. This place offers an NYU discount when paid with cash AND not to mention, they also DON'T have a massive line like Saigon Shack does. The food is much hotter, fresher, and tastier all around, especially compared to other pho joints in Greenwich Village. The price is absolutely reasonable, and DID I MENTION AN NYU DISCOUNT?! I've been here more than a few times now. It's a good place to go if you are single or if your on a causal date. The price of the food is REALLY reasonable. The service is pretty decent too. Bathrooms are clean most of the time. They have a some really good soup dishes and also rice dishes - again all reasonably priced. There's a wine bar but this isn't a wine place really. This place feels exactly like a Vietnamese restaurant I was hoping for, especially that first moment I walked in and there was awkward fumbling over where to sit. Contrary to the neighborhood Saigon Shack, this place looks and feels Vietnamese without the Asian-fusion-hipster vibe that I've noticed many Vietnamese joints have if they're outside of the 1/2 mile Chinatown radius. Hello Saigon still has a little headway to go before I can declare that it is as authentic that I like it, but wow is this a step up from other places I've tried in NYC! Prices are still inflated because there just is no "little Saigon" in Manhattan (please let me know if there is one that I haven't explored because I'd LOVE to go there) and there is no distinct competition in one area. Anyway, FOOD: Lunch special is an appetizer, entree, and soda for $10. Still reasonable though there's only one summer roll for the appetizer when I love them in quantities of 2 or more. Pho was portioned well and actually tasted great! The only real complaint I have is that I haven't seen a house special pho on the menu and that is a classic baseline for Viet restaurants that attract other well seasoned pho eaters like me like flies. I've been here 3 times and tried a half dozen items on the menu (bahn mi, pho, bun, various appetizers) and everything is absolutely delicious.
