Called in for some much needed Pho on a cold, rainy day. The phone order itself took a little too long and some confusion upon delivery- missing 1 of the pho soups. However, I couldn't even remove a star for the error or delay because the owner himself hand delivered the missing pho with an apology for the confusion. Got pork summer rolls and pork spring rolls. I'm not a fan of summer rolls usually, but if I had to eat them, I'd eat it from this place. My girlfriend likes them so we ordered them. This is a weird place. I don't quite know how to comment on their waiters' honesty after we were suggested by two different waiters not to order some items from their menu. While we were asking questions to help us decide what to order, waiter A asked us if it was our first time there, and after we answered "yes", he told us the broth of Bún Bò Hu (spicy beef and pork hue style soup with vermicelli) - which we were gonna order - was too sweet and I think he said that he personally doesn't like it. My bf appreciated his advice and went with his recommendation (his personal fav), which did turn out to be pretty good, but was something we would never have tried if it wasn't for a recommendation. While we were waiting for our food (it took a really long time), I got interested in the dozen raw oyster on the happy hour menu, seeing it on other ppl's table. I asked waiter B if it was still served at the happy hour price and surprisingly he said, "I suggest you not order it cuz it's not so fresh." I was probably like, brow-raising or shrugging or facepalming, or all at once. I do appreciate the honesty but frankly I was a little annoyed for a sec. I came to this restaurant on opening night and the food was AMAZING. I got the sesame beef rice vermicelli and it was so delicious-- the meat so juicy and savory, there were just the right amount of peanuts and mint. I stirred in a helping portion of hoison sauce (not sure if it is house made but the best i've ever had, I don't normally like it) and siracha and it made it even better. As an appetizer we got the vietnamese pancake and it was both crispy and melted on the tongue, with flavorful hints of coconut. My date had the steak pho and loved it. The prices are very reasonable and affordable-- you can easily get a dish for $10 or less if you want to. I am definitely coming back here! The short rib pho is amazing. The meat is incredibly flavorful and tender. There's a little bit of fat and if you like your meats leaner like me, it's not that difficult to shave off the fat with a spoon or fork before digging in. The broccoli florets in the pho was a first for me and kind of caught me off guard but if you let them marinate in the broth for ~15 minutes before eating them they taste great. The short rib pho is $14 but worth every penny. Very filling so no appetizers needed. Service was very good. Very attentive and accommodating for all my needs and requests. I got a beef and brisket pho for $9 I believe. The restaurant was empty around the lunch time and my food came out pretty fast. If you're expecting an average pho, then this is the right place. Nothing too special, just what you normally expect in pho. The portion was pretty small compared to other places but it was perfect for me. Servers were not rude but never asked me about the food or more water but asked me if I'm finished as soon as they saw me putting down the spoon. It's always a little disheartening to see the front of a restaurant festooned with signs that don't have anything to do with what the restaurant actually serves. Welcome to Hello Saigon. So, maybe the many, cute signs in Chinese that litter the front window of the restaurant have something to do the with Vietnamese food served inside--I would never know since I don't read Chinese--but it's usually not a good indicator. Regardless, I wanted to like this place since one of my Holy Grails is finding great Vietnamese food (and not just the latest trend for pho or banh mi...). Sad to say, this is not the place. It's not bad, but it's not that great. Well, OK; my quest goes on. However, let's get to the subject of discounts: One of things that everyone on Yelp likes about Hello Saigon is the discounts they offer. There are discounts for students, happy hour, Yelp check-in, days of the week, cash; practically everything or so it seems. There's even a sign on front saying 25% discount for cash (in English BTW, although there may be one in Chinese as well). I do my Yelp check-in--no discount. Paying by cash--no discount. Happy hour wine/beer--no discount. Needless to say, I'm not coming back to Hello Saigon. It's not like the food was bad (it's not); I simply resent being lied to and mis-led.
