    Pistachio chocolate croissant
    Rachael S.

This small Belgian bakery located on the main floor of an apartment building is something special. You are immediately greeted by a kind hearted man who thanks you for supporting their business. He notes all the pastries and breads are made in the back daily, gesturing to an open door where you can observe pastry chefs hard at work. I tried their pistachio chocolate croissant and was in heaven. The pastry is nicely sized with flakey inner layers (cloud like) and a crisp exterior. The base boasts a generous strip of pistachio paste with a ribbon of chocolate running through the middle, evenly distributed throughout the croissant, so that each bite has the proper ratio of components. There is a little sitting space just adjacent to the main area if you plan to enjoy your treat on the spot. It also looked like they had hot items, think more breakfast and lunch sandwiches, to your liking. Highly recommend if you are in the area. What's more is the team really seems to appreciate anyone who supports their business, which makes me want to tell everyone and their mother about Hendrickx!

Soup of the Day (Asparagus) with 1/2 Sandwich (Belgian Tuna Salad Sandwich).

I was introduced to Hendrickx many years ago when an old college friend brought a chocolate loaf over to a party I had hosted. I remembered it being very delicious and while in the area I stopped to revisit an old favorite. This time I purchased savory with my sweets to go. My husband got their chocolate mousse (which he absolutely loved) and I chose the 1/2 soup and sandwich combo. I went with their soup of the day (Asparagus) and the Tuna salad. The soup was a flop. Despite the presence of asparagus, it fell flat and needed more season. As for the tuna sandwich, I enjoyed it a lot. Not only was the tuna delicious but the bread was soft yet springy. Bread is their specialty but most of the offerings outside of bread are good. The service I received was excellent. I had shopping to do and didn't want to carry food so they held my goods until I was ready to pick it up later. With a lack of interior dining space, outdoor tables and chairs are available for a nice meal al fresco. The parking sitch is challenging in the Gold Coast. As a result I chose valet to avoid the hassle. Oftentimes most clientele who shop here either live or work nearby. If you're staying at the Drake with the intention of seeking casual fare outside the hotel, this is a great option.

Amazing croissants in a cute shop with super friendly service. I asked what the Belgian croissant was made of and the answer was "butter and love". When I bit into it, that was the 100% perfect description! Can't wait to go back next time I'm in Chicago to try their other treats!

The perfect spot for petit dejeuner! Such a charming little spot with a handful of tables. I was impressed with the assortment of breads, pastries, and other treats. I enjoyed the prosciutto croissant sandwich, the arugula helps to balance the richness of the other elements. The speculoos latte was delicious and not too sweet. I took home an Icelandic lava cake and shortbread cookies which were also magnificent!

Wandered into this bakery on a whim since it's tucked away in Magnificent Mile. They had a nice selection of croissant options so I opted for the Pistachio Croissant. Not the flakiest croissant I've ever had (tasted a tad stale) but the pistachio paste filling was yummy. Also the staff is SO nice. The man in front was so friendly and bubbly, 10/10 service. They do have some indoor seating but you have to walk through the kitchen to get there which is interesting. Outdoor seating is aplenty.

Walked past many times without realizing where this bakery actually was. Look upwards for the orange door up the stairs! Service was great. Super sweet and explained their popular items, what they have, and that there was actually seating past the bakery section. After I placed my order for dine in, I was led around the corner through the kitchen to a small seating area. My order was brought to my table and there's a sign that tells you to just leave your finished dishes on the table for them to collect. The food was also great. The pastries I tried were fresh. I love a warm canelé. The pistachio croissant had a thick pistachio paste that was a little sweeter than I was expecting but paired well either way my latte. Would love to come back and try more of their goods.

One of my favorite bakeries in Chicago, some of the best croissants. We ordered: - Pistachio-Chocolate Croissant - Belgian Croissant - Almond-Chocolate Croissant Honestly, the Belgian Croissant was probably my favorite of the three. Very soft and flavorful, definitely recommend picking one up.

Behind the counter -- quite an array of croissants and pastries.

Tiny but mighty. Large variety of delicious fresh European style croissants and pastries. Lavazza coffee and tea, breakfast sandwiches and other savories. You order, then walk around an inside corner next to the kitchen to get to a small seating area with floor to ceiling windows to the street! Cozy and warm. Really good. Owners on site and they are very nice - excellent service!

Not noticeable from the street, but so good when you walk in. Was consistently busy. The owner was so nice. Everyone was welcoming and provided impeccable service. The quiche was yum. The chocolate croissant was flakier and tastier than the plain croissant. The coffees were piping hot. The mocha had chocolate melted into it, so the bottom half was more chocolate than coffee. A hidden gem that locals are clearly aware of. Would go back.

Loved the egg salad croissant . It was buttery. The egg salad was perfect . It was small but I ate in . A few tables but fun! I will eat outside when the weather gets there! The bakery cookies were the best. The server and hostess were so nice! I will most definitely go again . There are stairs to go up. You order at the counter to eat there or to go ! I can't wait to return !

I was curious and wanted to visit but I was underwhelmed. On the other hand, I'm glad I finally got to try some Madelines! My little one seemed to like those a lot too. The sables were ok, and were pretty humungous. The place is small--they said there's more seating inside but I'm not sure I understand where. There are a few tables outside if you're here to hang out a few minutes. They had some interesting savory croissants and I did like that. Parking is nonexistent, really, except there are two or three 15-minute spots right in front of the building that houses the bakery. I happened to get lucky and there was one of them open. I don't think there's an accessible entrance, unless its going around the side of the building or something.

Amazing! As a French man,, It's always been difficult to find a good croissant. This place has it all. Pastries, bread, good espresso

wow! What a hidden gem that took my whole life to discover. I am not much of a bread eater but I was in the mood for a hearty lunch and after reading some of the reviews I decided to stop by. First off the space is a hole in the wall and small in comparison of what's around but it's worth seeking this bakery. First off the staff is so warm and patient. The food is a steal, their lunch specials are so reasonable. I ordered soup and half a sandwich for $13 and the portion was huge. Finally the food is so delicious! I tried their gruyere croissant and it was amazing, the tomato celery soup is divine and the loved the curry chicken salad!

I like to get to know the vibe of the city where I'm visiting. I was immediately impressed by the semi industrial look of this particular location. I have since found out that the locations have their own unique decor, from what I was told. I heard that they bake their own pastries and roasted their own coffee beans. So that was neat and I tried both. I had a chocolate croissant, which was absolutely delicious. For my drink I ordered the spicy mocha, which is like a Mexican mocha with a little bit of extra spice added. It was very good. However, I ordered it hot and received lukewarm coffee. This is the second time I've gone to a coffee shop and the coffee wasn't piping hot. I don't know what this trend is. But anyway, the coffee tasted great, otherwise. The Pistachio Cake Donut for some reason was texturally firmer and drier than the other. Unfortunately, the fried donuts were all misses. The dough was just really dense and none of the toppings really hit. The Glazed Donut just made me sad that the dough was bad and the bacon on the Maple Bacon Donut wasn't crispy, so you got a cold, chewy, greasy bite that wasn't super pleasant. The chopped dough pieces in the Apple Fritter were also oddly firm instead of soft. We ordered the Vaca Frita, which is basically pan-fried shredded beef. Honestly, it was quite good -- you get protein and fat from the beef, plus some fiber from the vegetables. Instead of the fried potatoes that are so common in American meals, it came with fried plantains. It also included a mix of rice and black beans, which became savory and satisfying once everything was combined together. This is exactly what I mean when I say Cuban food works well for a Chinese palate: a balanced meal should have everything -- carbs, fiber, protein, and fat. My friend also ordered the Cafechera, which was something quite special: thinly sliced steak with a roasted aroma from coffee grounds. It was my first time trying anything like that, and I really liked it. Apparently, the leftover grounds from my pour-over coffee can do more than just sit in the fridge absorbing odors from now on. I did not try the Steak Chimichurri. My friend had been walking all day and was starving, and the dish disappeared from the table in less than five minutes. I suppose that counts as a compliment to the chef. The Shrimp Ceviche Salad was also very good, though this may be one of those dishes that can confuse some Chinese diners at first because the acidity is quite strong. Back home, we are more used to salads with creamy dressings, Thousand Island, or vinaigrette. A dressing dominated by lemon or lime juice can be difficult for some of my companions who have only recently arrived in the US, but personally, I loved it, haha. The restaurant is not very large, but it has both tables and bar seating. Whether you just want to grab a quick sandwich or come by in the evening for a drink, it feels like a very good fit. Unfortunately, we did not get to have a drink that day because the restaurant was closing early for Independence Day. All the tableware in my photos was also in pickup mode, which was a shame -- no chance to take any pretty food photos this time.
