I know my way around a bakery, and this is currently my favorite almond croissant in the city. Though somewhat pricey, it's worth it. I also tried the pistachio/chocolate croissant. While the pastry itself is good (and the same as the almond), I wasn't a huge fan of how disparate the chocolate was. Came here after searching for places to buy macarons and a light lunch, maybe some tea. This bakery had it all. I couldn't find the location at first, and it's hard to see from across the street. That is my only complaint. I ordered the fall kale salad, some macarons and a rose rooibos tea. The salad took about 10 minutes for them to make, and at first I thought they might have forgotten about me, but that's because they make it fresh! This was one of the best salads I've had in awhile. It also came with some bread slices and those were very good as well. Everything tasted fresh & REAL which is rare in America. Whenever I wind up in this area I make a point of going here for one reason. The Curry Chicken Salad Sandwich. I capitalize it out of respect for being one of my favorite food items in Chicago. I don't know much about Belgian cuisine except that I fantasize about this sandwich and crave it. I am not a sweets person, but if I were this place would be double trouble, as they look amazing and smell even better. The bread used is so sublime, so perfect it is impossible to describe. The curry chicken within is nothing fancy (without grapes and nuts and such) just so perfect. Perhaps this is a Belgian style. I only eat half (as it is pretty rich I'm sure, made with their home made mayo) and I take half home for later! Also just had my first soup which was an amazing Leek, non-dairy. You can get 1/2 a sandwich and soup which is my new plan. Just had their tuna salad and that is excellent as well! Hard to decide! I also just discovered the best plan and that is the Chicken Curry Salad "salad". WIth that you get a side of great lentil salad, arugula salad and a couple slices of bread. That's the way I go now. One of my favorite places in Chicago.. all of Chicago. I usually go there for lunch and get a cup of soup and half of a sandwhich. They have two soups daily, and change almost every day. I have had 4 different soups here and they were all seriously AMAZING. They are more like a puree. You get bread with it as well, and it is amazing.I have tried the Tuna and the Chicken Curry salad sandwhich, both are great but my favorite is the chicken curry... so.. good... I have tried their blueberry torte, and that was great as well. All in all, this is a great place to get a pastry, coffee, lunch.. whatever! A little pricey, but well worth it!! read more

Wow! We tried an almond croissant, a pistachio croissant, a chocolate croissant and a chicken curry sandwich. Everything was delicious! The favorite was probably the almond croissant - delicious & flaky with almonds on top and almond paste on the inside. We also took home a loaf of wheat bread which we ate the next day for breakfast - toasted with butter & honey. Yum! This was a great find on a recent trip to Chicago. For me ... I had been craving croissants and remembered that I had bookmarked this place for awhile now. So I made the trip in the snow/rain/icky weather for some croissants. I went near closing time, and a lot of their usual items (croissants, muffins, brioche, most of the breads) were sold out. The super sweet owner apologized for having limited options. I told her not to apologize and that it'll only make me want to come back again...which I know I will! She went through the menu with me and said they bake everything in-house that stays fresh up to 6 days. How awesome is that? She also mentioned that they offer cooking/baking classes on Sundays (I think twice a month). Whatever you make you get to bring home and enjoy. Mental note: must take class. THIS is why I live where I do. Chicago has as many or more food options as anywhere I have ever traveled. And sometimes it is just the simple stuff like Hendrickx. Real Belgian bread. Not too sweet. Not oversized or Americanized. It is all about the bread. My kids love this place as part of our ever evolving weekend rituals. They love to go in early while things are still being actively baked and prepared. They love a simple croissant especially while it is still warm. We pick them out and take them to the park. I will miss this when the warm weather ends soon. Incidentally, who picks a croissant other than a kid? I know that they are mine but those kids are cute. Macaroons for me too please! I will pay in extra cardio time for every carb I eat here but it is worth every extra mile. read more

So you love carbohydrates???!!! This place offers many reasons on why you "can't" stop your obsession with carbs. They have tons of carb options and here is what my mouth and taste buds will like to have again. The Belgian White Chocolate bread ... similar to a pound cake but better. The Belgian dark chocolate cake ... Both breads were rich and dense that I needed milk. I don't say that in a bad way, in my world that is the best compliment. If I remember correctly it takes them about 18 hours to make the croissants so when I ate my Cherry Croissant I took my time to savor every bite. Anyone that puts that much time into making something deserves my calories and money. I have had plenty of croissants in my life but nothing compares to what they are making at Hendrickx's. Their waffles are real Belgian waffles! My whole life I feel like I have been many places that state they were serving me Belgian waffle and during my visit to Hendrickx I realized they were liars! I will no longer let them fool me or my wallet. Atmosphere: small place that holds in the mouth watering smells. I read reviews that talk about long lines ... I didn't experience during my visit but my taste buds wouldn't care standing in line to get exactly what I have had and maybe try lunch. Cute small bakery that's tucked beneath a high-rise apartment building. You can find it by spotting an orange door which surprisingly, you don't need to open with any forth, it just flies open. The croissants are delicious, fluffy and flavorful. There are additional seatings outside and also tucked behind their counter, next to the kitchen. We stopped by here for brunch before a quick trip to Bloomingdale's and an eyebrow appointment. The space is small, but it smells amazing. They had all of their croissants lined up in a beautiful row, and some were sold out by the time we got there (a little before 11). My husband and I tried a chocolate almond croissant and it was amazing. I also had a cappuccino that was very good. For the main event, we split a large quiche. The quiche was big enough to be cut into three large servings, one of which we brought home. The quiche came with a side salad--arugula and kale--with perfectly vinnegary dressing. The mixture of the quiche with the bright salad was really satisfying. We tried to give our leftover slice to a guy panhandling at Rush and Walton. He asked what it was an turned it down, despite our assurances that it was the best quiche we had ever had. Oh well, more for us! I was introduced to this place through a Chocolate Tour that I did, and I am sooo happy that I was! Everything is soooo fresh. The croissants are absolutely delicious, and to think that I used to dislike croissants! OH and the chocolate ones are the best! They are soooo soft on the inside, you can pull each layer apart and enjoy slowly... mmmm. You must get there before noon on the weekend though before they sell this delicious goodness. My boyfriend tried the waffle, that was covered in sugary stuff, and it was really good too. They have different macaroons, and pastries, and I hear that the soups are delicious also. They have these individual tea brewers that you place over your cup when the tea is ready, and the tea is right away released into the cup, so cool! This place is delicious, with nice service. On our way to the Museum of Contemporary Art, we stopped over for brunch. We had the savory crepes of the day: smoked salmon, cream, dill. RIDICULOUS. Also a side salad (arugula and kale, so yummy), the tuna salad plate, and a cannelé to share. The cannelé was perfect. So dense and eggy and sweet. We sat outside - there's lots of seating inside and some outside. I should have tried a croissant but I thought all that we had ordered was just fine. It's inside an orange front door! My wife and I left Sprinkles Cupcakes and almost walked right by this shop, which is on the same street, without noticing it. For one thing, it's set back slightly from the sidewalk, for another, there's no signage out on the street. But I happened to look to the left as we strolled past and spotted the largest macaroons I've ever seen, So we decided to go in and check the place out. We were full from the cupcakes, so we didn't order as much as we might have, because everything was enticing. My wife and I each got a sticky roll, mine with pecans, hers without, plus I ordered one of the macaroons, as I'm a sucker for pistachio. We didn't eat them in the shop, but rather back at the hotel. Sad to say, I was disappointed. The roll was hard, and seemed almost stale, while the macaroon had none of the light chewiness I expect in a macaroon. (Perhaps that description sounds contradictory, but that's how I think of macaroons.) Instead, it had more of the consistency of a whoopie pie, which, when you're in the mood for a whoopie pie, can be a good thing. But it's not what I want in a macaroon. And the flavor didn't ring true to me. I was far happier with the pistachio macaroon I ordered the following day at the Argo Tea Cafe over on Michigan Avenue. Because my experience is so out of sync with the other reviews I see here, though, I do plan to give the place another try the next time in Chicago. Maybe then, what the mouth tastes will be more in line with what the eye sees. read more

Came here on advice of some locals who said the croissants were amazing. Well, I'm not sure what their definition of amazing was. I've had much better croissants at other places. These were rather dry and bland. I only had a coffee and croissant. I would probably have ordered lunch but the place is so small and the menu is placed right up front by the register, that I could barely read it before I was asked "yes, what would you like?" With a line forming behind me and the server (owner?) seeming rushed, I just blurted out "croissant." With other reviewers comments, I decided to skip lunch here the next day...especially if the lunch was as bland as the croissants. I say this after having travelled extensively in Belgium and France. I've had fresher, more buttery, freshly baked croissants at Amaranth Bakery in my hometown of Milwaukee. read more

I have been to Belgium and the food here is very true to the taste. This is my favorite bakery/cafe in the city, except for the horrible service. The lady who takes your order has been rude, unfriendly and short every time I have been in there. The food is terrific! So good I came here TWICE within 24 hours! This bakery was located near our hotel and I was so thankful it was! OKay, i am currently writing this revised review at this bakery. AMAZING owner. she is so kind and the service is very good and welcoming I got the tomato soup on this cold weather and it was the perfect way to end the night. It wasnt too salty and was more watery then creamy which is always good on cold days. the soup was accompanied with their bread made in the house, and their butter imported from France. ALSO, get the Belgium drip coffee. it is the smoothest of coffees that I have ever had! Its $2.50 Please go here, but this place is amazing and you wont be disappointed. Loved coming to Hendrickx while I was visiting. I was there in February so when I first walked into the store- I was greeted with warmth and the overwhelming smell of baked goods. I definitely welcomed both! The store is small but the pastries were big and made with love! I ordered an Americano with my croissant and both were perfect. Nicely roasted espresso and perfectly baked pastry. The shell was crispy and a lovely golden brown (So happy that the bottom wasn't burnt), while the inside was buttery and flaky. It was so good I came back again a couple days later! This time I sat inside to enjoy my coffee and food. My friend and I split a quiche and it was also great! I wouldn't say it was phenomenal but it was still quite good! I would absolutely reccommend that you try this place if you're nearby! read more

Really cannot understand the strong ratings. Mediocre tuna sandwich, indistinctive coffee and most disappointing - an overly chewy croissant with way too little chocolate.
