I came to Hendrickx Bread looking to warm up with a cup of soup and some hearty, crusty, warm bread. And let me tell you, this was the right place to get it. The woman working the counter (possibly the owner) was so kind and let me know there was a sitting area though the kitchen if I wanted to eat my meal inside. It was small and no one else was in there, so I felt very safe. The soup was UNBELIEVEABLE, I ended up pretty much licking the bowl clean. The bread that came with it was outstanding, and the softened, salty butter was the perfect accompaniment. Before I left.. I knew I had to get some pastries and sweets to go. I was eyeing the Almond Chocolate Croissant, but by the time I finished my meal it was already sold! Instead, I went with the Chocolate Lava Cake and the Homemade Hazelnut Rochers. These rochers were a thousand times better than the Ferrero Rocher's you can get at the store, and made with whole ingredients. I was so impressed! What I am really dying to try is the 'Croizang' or the 'Zāng Zāng Bāo'. This thing looks epic.. I'm really hoping they deliver! Having lived in Belgium previously, I was excited to see a Belgian bakery near my hotel. However, once my excitement subsided, I was reminded that Belgium isn't really famous for its bread or pastries. I spent way too much money here over the course of a weekend, really trying hard to love it. I got two of the mignon (mini) cakes. The pistachio one was a hit, a bit dry, but with good flavor. The dark chocolate one was fine, but we were full and didn't feel the need to finish or save the half we didn't eat. I also got some of the Belgian country bread and the Bruegel. The country loaf was decent. While I usually enjoy a dark, hearty bread, the Bruegel was not enjoyable to me or my family, but it isn't bad if you put enough stuff on it to mask the strong flavor. The madeleines were probably the best thing I tried there, and I feel like they were a very solid 3/5, a bit overcooked but with good flavor. On the plus side, this is certainly better than the other options in the neighborhood, and the owners are very nice. I'd come back if I were in the area to try a few other things and support local business, but I probably wouldn't get any of the same things again. read more

Just slightly off the beaten path (Mag Mile) there's this small bakery that fits about five customers at a time when a line trails out the door. Inside you'll find nice people, and behind them, an assortment of croissants, muffins, cookies, and other freshly baked goods. Update: Ate here for the second day breakfast, too (chocolate croissant and a bite of pistachio croissant. Delicious)! Haven't been here in years but we were staying at a hotel around the corner and my wife was doing a web search and found it. I had a chocolate almond croissant and coffee both of which were very good and my wife had gruyere cheese on a bagel. She said that it was the best croissant that she's ever had. Solid croissants! My sister and I visited this bakery on a Sunday at around 1pm. There were a few people eating outside at the tables but it was empty when we walked in. Since we took the bus here, I'm not sure what the parking situation was like. The shop interior was decently sized with a few tables and chairs. We came here specifically for the croissants. My sister had done online reconnaissance beforehand and wanted the Pistachio Chocolate croissant and the Almond Chocolate croissant. She had read that you have to get there early for the pistachio one because they often sell out. Lucky for her, despite getting there late, they still had both of them. What a lovely bakery! So glad we stopped by here. Like others have mentioned a bit hard to find. It's on a raised patio behind columns. Look for the orange door! We had lunch here. The lady working here was lovely. Upon finding out it was our first time there she took the time to explain their goods and even kept the tab open since we wanted to take baked goodies to go. Tried the egg salad and curry chicken salad sandwiches. They were both yummy and the bread was so soft. We were surprised at the size of the sandwich. Definitely filling! I then got the pistachio croissant, almond chocolate croissant, gruyere croissant and the apple turnover to go. Devoured all on the plane ride back. We really would give this place more stars except for when we were there, an employee of some kind (unclear of his role) was not properly wearing a mask (it did not cover his nose) and we were deeply put off by this. The gentleman who helped us and rang us up (hard to tell if he was the owner because he WAS properly wearing a mask) was friendly. We ordered two bread loaves (both delicious), croissants (extremely delicious), and a tea cake (this thing must have weighed four lbs!). The bakery is not convenient to us and we will only continue to patronize businesses where proper hygiene is maintained, so we won't be back. This is another one of those "hidden in plain sight" type of places. Wanting to celebrate National Croissant Day I thought I would suss out this bakery. I had never been in before, despite the fact that I pass by all the time. The interior is cozy and belies the vast selection of sweet treats (including gluten free varieties) on offer, as well as soups, savory items, salads, sandwiches, and more. Even though it was later in the day, there were still several croissant varieties from which to choose. These included an almond and chocolate, grueyere, chocolate-only, and plain options. I decided to be a traditionalist and go with the plain croissant, which I ordered warm, along with a coffee. The coffee was good and the croissant was outstanding, easily putting my typical Starbucks almond croissant in the shade. Next time, I will definitely have to stop by earlier in the day, as I was told there are over a dozen (!) varieties of croissants baked in house. I savored my selection while I read and looked around. It is clear this is a spot frequented by regulars. A woman waiting for her order mentioned that she loved the chicken salad and egg salad served here. I look forward to trying these as it can sometimes seem like I've exhausted all of my usual fast-casual, healthy-ish dining options (trademark pending, I am sure). The ambiance is civilized and the service is personalized and friendly. I witnessed quite a few instances of the staff acknowledging repeat customers. What a really random location to have a small bakery. I've been here a couple times over the years and just fell in love with this place. I was actually introduced go this bakery because I was told they sell giant french macarons for a reasonable price. They offer a variety of flavors every day and they never fail to impress me. I've since fallen in love with their Belgian Croissants. My favorites are the almond Croissant( 3.95), almond with chocolate (4.10), pistachio (3.95), and the pistachio with chocolate( 4.10). They open their doors at 8:00 AM sharp. Getting the 1st croissant of the day is heavenly. The buttery flakey crust, pillowy layers, and gooey chocolate with almond paste in the middle is delicious. First time in today for croissants, and they were absolutely delicious. They sell out quick so I called before stopping by to see if they had any croissants in stock -- luckily they did. I was told they typically sell out at 11am most days but if you call ahead, they will hold croissants for you. What I ordered: Almond croissant -- my favorite. There's a decent sized nugget of almond past, which was delicious. I much prefer this approach versus croissants with almond cream all in the middle. Not every bite is almond-filled, but I like this as I was able to enjoy the flavor of the croissant and not get overwhelmed with almond flavor every bite. Chocolate croissant -- enough chocolate filling, same set-up as the almond croissant. Traditional croissant -- basic, but delicious. Their croissants are buttery and flaky, but not too flaky where they are messy and overly buttery where that's all you taste. They were delicious. Some of the best in the city for sure. I had placed an order for a birthday cake a month ago for my husband and pre-paid for it. When I showed up to pick it up, they had no record of my order. The front desk person wouldn't give me the time of day to investigate what happened or apologize. Very disrespectfully, he was harsh with me that they have no records of it and to bring a receipt. We are celebrating my husband's birthday tonight, not only they didn't have our order, reimburse me, they were extremely rude and disrespectful to me. Despite its hidden location, staff were lovely and provided great service. I ordered some croissants and sandwiches. The croissants were buttery and flaky and not overly sweet. I can see why they are well-known for them. On the other hand, their sandwiches were dull in comparison. The prosciutto and croissant sandwich was not properly dressed and could have benefitted from being toasted. The chicken curry sandwich had practically no flavor and needed some greens to brighten it up - the bread also needed to be toasted or buttered. I don't understand how this place has so many good reviews. I ordered quite a bit and wasn't happy with any of it. Everything tasted as though it had been in a refrigerator for too long. The croissants were dry/stale, the macarons were very sweet. The St. Honore that I paid $70+ for was terrible. It was made with some sort of orange pastry cream that looked as though it was slapped onto choux pastry. I have so many nice things to say about this place. I came in with one of my little brothers looking for their popular croissants. They had many fresh options available. The croissants were crispy, flaky, and buttery! Hands down the best croissants I've ever had in Chicago! In my life! My brother is a health nut so he requested gluten free pastries. They had a handful of options, like their gigantic macaroons!
