Food, service and attention to details never disappoints at any Hillstone location. My tried and true go to spot for life which we frequent quite a bit. We have our favorite appetizers which are the spinach dip, smoked salmon, kale salad and when in season, the grilled artichokes. The go to entree's for this last visit were the french dip, crispy chicken sandwich and the hamburger. The servers are very attentive and will always replace my dirty martini glass with a nicely chilled glass (when babysitting my cocktail). No complaints other than the distance we have to drive from Mesa to eat in Phoenix. Otherwise...5 stars and I highly recommend newbies give it try. read more

First off.. this has been my favorite restaurant to go to for 12 years, love the ambience. I love the staff. I love the food , that being said ..Hillstone has decided they do not want to take CASH for payment ... this started right after Covid , then they brought it back where you could pay with cash and found out today, They don't take cash. CASH is king and cash is Legal tender. Now , they will take cash for a tip of course. 5 stars on food but I can't give a five star when you can't pay with Legal tender. I know there are fancier restaurants and nicer restaurants but for me the BEST will always be Hillstone Restaurant (Biltmore). The staff from beginning to end are amazing. The restaurant is run like a well oiled machine I've never experienced service like it. The staff remember Liam and I from one visit to the next. The food is just off the charts!! From a simple chicken salad to the fall of the bones ribs. Today I had the French dip and I have never tasted anything like it!! This is hands down Liam's fav place and it's "our" place. Let's not forget when you are drinking your cocktail they come around and change your glass half way through for a new chilled glass. I mean come on. I was satisfied with my experience at Hillstone. My reservation was for 8 pm, I wasn't seated too shortly after, but there isn't much room to sit while waiting. We started off with the artichoke dip which was very good and got a Diet Coke, whcih sadly didn't taste good. For dinner we got one of their chicken dishes, a veggie burger, and the side of broccoli and mashed potatoes. I would give the food a 8/10. We've been loyal Hillstone customers for years. Easily thousands of dollars spent, always enthusiastic about the food, and never a bad experience. Until now. We tried to book a reservation for 5 people, weeks in advance. The website stopped us cold with this gem: "Reservations for parties of 5 are not typically available. We prefer to host experiences based on smaller, more intimate parties of two." Experiences. Based on. Parties of two. At a restaurant with a burger on the menu. We called anyway, hoping for some human common sense. What we got was a flat refusal and a condescending explanation about the "flow of the dining room." Never mind that we've dined there as a group of 6 before without the dining room spontaneously combusting. Their suggestion? Walk in and wait. For five people. On a night we have tickets to an event. We took our business to a neighboring restaurant who was happy to take our reservation and our money without requiring us to justify the size of our friend group. Sorry, Hillstone. Truly a classic place. I tried to order takeout but the front desk told me "we don't really do that" so we had a seat at the bar and enjoyed excellent service. My restaurant world has collapsed. I have given Hillstone stellar reviews several times in the past. After my last two visits I have to admit defeat...something has changed. My "go to" sandwich, the French Dip has dipped below perfection. In fact, it has dropped so low in quality that it no longer is even on my horizon of choices. You probably don't care if you don't eat their French Dip. But when there is ONE PLACE you could always count on for a perfect French Dip...and now that is gone. For shame. Fatty, grisly meat that you literally have to get out of your mouth somehow because there is no grinding it up...well, all I can say is UGH! Last visit I on 2/14/26 I specifically asked the server to mention to the kitchen how bad the last one was and could they monitor what they put on. Any time I choose to feast at Hillstone I know it will be fabulous. They did not disappoint me The service is attentive but not over powering and disappear as fast as they appear. Love the atmosphere as I love to sit in the small booths in the bar area. It is brighter and more action. I chose the ribs and they were so moist and I like the sauce... the Cole slaw is always tasty. They have recipes they follow and it is about consistency. Please ignore the 3.8 rating, this place is by far one of the best restaurants in all of Phoenix. My wife had the Asian noodle salad with chicken, and I have a cheeseburger. The service was five stars, and special shout out to Johnny, the hostess with the mostess, she is always so sweet and so kind even when we don't have a reservation! Discriminated Against and Harassed - Hillstone Phoenix Has Lost a Loyal Guest Forever As someone who dined at Hillstone Phoenix multiple times a week when I lived here--and who has since become a regular at their sister restaurants in LA, like South Beverly Grill and Gulfstream in Newport--I'm absolutely appalled by the treatment my husband and I received during a recent visit. I've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars at this restaurant group over the years. After this experience, they won't see another penny. We flew into Phoenix for a quick weekend trip and made a reservation for three. Realizing it was a school holiday and that our friend's kids would be joining, I called ahead to adjust the party to five. The hostess couldn't have been more dismissive and flat-out refused--no flexibility, no solutions, no hospitality. Fine. We decided we'd walk in instead. When we arrived, I saw familiar faces behind the bar and stopped to say hello. Before I could finish my sentence, the general manager--who I believe I recognized from Houston's Irvine--rushed over to harass us and, quite frankly, discriminate against us for being a gay couple. My husband was wearing a trendy sleeveless top, something we've literally worn several times at South Beverly Grill without issue. But this manager refused to seat us, saying his shoulders were showing. Meanwhile, the woman in our party wore a nearly identical top--and he had no problem with her outfit. When I asked about the discrepancy, his response was: "Well, she's a female, so she can wear that. But because you're a man, you can't show your shoulders." Excuse me? That's not a dress code--that's blatant discrimination. And let's not pretend this is The Ritz in Paris--it's a casual lunch spot on Camelback, in Arizona, in April. The restaurant was half empty, and yet the GM went out of his way to make us feel unwelcome because of how my husband dressed--something he would never have done to a straight couple. I worked in hospitality--I waited tables at Mastro's in college. I understand dress codes. But what I also understand is grace. On the rare occasion we had to enforce something, we would apologize profusely, offer a solution (a chef's coat, even), and go out of our way to make the guest feel cared for. That's hospitality. What Hillstone Phoenix delivered was harassment, judgment, and exclusion. We left and dined at Buck & Rider down the street instead--shoulders and all--and spent $500 on lunch, leaving our server a $150 tip. That is where hospitality lives. Not here. It's heartbreaking because Gulfstream in Newport has always been a favorite of ours. But after this experience, I will never support this restaurant group again. Your money may be green, but if you're gay, don't expect to be treated with basic decency at Hillstone Phoenix. Shame on them. This restaurant lives up to its reputation, Unbelievable CS, Superb Food and Cocktails and a great ambiance. Pay strict attention to dress code, reservations should be made in advance and adhered to, I like their attention to detail and policies. Staff is phenomenal, Jenn waited on us and she was super and made our dining experience memorable, we will definitely go back, pricing was in line with the quality, etc. We had a small error in one of our entrees and the corrected it immediately. Water glasses were chilled prior to arriving at our table. I had a Manhattan Up in a chilled glass and after I had consumed half of it they brought another freshly chilled glass to finish off my cocktail, that was a first but also super attention to detail. The food was excellent, Deviled Eggs, Ribs, Filet, Trout and Asian Salad. Don't miss the Key Lime Pie for dessert-yummy. It is difficult to get in , my choice was 11.00 am or 1.15.we were seated promptly. Restaurant was very noisy and difficult to carry on a discussion. Ordered Asian salad , there was minimal noodles, but plenty of ava adds and mango. We arrived at Hillstone for our 8pm reservation and spent 40 minutes waiting at the bar with a round of drinks. Shortly after, the new night manager, Lucas, approached us in a harsh and dismissive tone. To our shock, he stated he would not seat us because I was wearing a $1,000 designer sleeveless shirt. It felt blatantly targeted and discriminatory, especially as I was dressed head to toe in Gucci on a 110-degree night. I have worn this exact sleeveless shirt at Hillstone before under the previous manager, Rolf, without issue. (photo attached) The way Lucas handled this situation was disgraceful. He escalated things unnecessarily, even going as far as calling the police--over a shirt. My husband stood up for me, yet Lucas refused to back down, instead reprimanding the hostess in front of everyone simply for speaking with us. His behavior left staff and guests alike stunned. My husband and I were left utterly shocked by the flagrant homophobia and dismissiveness displayed. To make matters worse, throughout this humiliating scene, Lucas's conduct was inappropriate and unprofessional. This kind of behavior has no place in any hospitality setting, much less at Hillstone, a restaurant we've frequented for years. What should have been a pleasant evening turned into one of the most demeaning and offensive experiences we've ever had. Lucas is new, but his actions are unacceptable, discriminatory, and damaging to Hillstone's reputation. Hillstone is currently facing an active federal EEOC discrimination lawsuit, with discovery ongoing into 2026 (EEOC v. Hillstone Restaurant Group, Inc., Case No. 1:22-cv-03108). Our experience as patrons raised serious concerns about how "manager discretion" is applied to guests. What happened: --We had a valid reservation and were seated at the bar while waiting for our table. --After more than 30 minutes at the bar ordering drinks, a manager approached and refused to seat our party over attire, stating enforcement was "up to manager discretion." --The attire cited was a black, tailored designer short-sleeve Gucci top. --No written or posted policy was provided when requested; we were told to "look it up online." --Our reservation was canceled, police were called, and a blanket ban was issued to the entire party. --Despite being asked to leave, we were required to close out and pay our full bar tab (approx. $280), which we did in full before exiting. --The General Manager later confirmed the ban via email but refused to provide any explanation or rationale, instead accusing our party of being disruptive. Selective enforcement, lack of transparency, and immediate escalation without explanation are not what one expects from a restaurant that presents itself as fine dining. In my opinion, the experience felt far closer to a fast-food confrontation. read more

Absolutely amazing service. Nice ambience it seems a little out dated but they use real candles which is a plus. The food to start was so phenomenal overall. The dip was delicious good consistency and good flavor, and the salsa was surprisingly really good. The sushi rolls were really good very high quality fish and creamy. The French dip was great nothing crazy, but it's just too simple for me. The crispy chicken sandwich was spectacular let me get 14 of them the ratio of crispy and juicy chicken to slaw and bread is amazing. The seasoning on the chicken is what really sets it apart. Food is just average. The four of us ordered different things and we all agreed it was disappointing

I've been a customer of Hillstone for over a decade, but today's experience was unacceptable. I visited with my 2-year-old and was informed they do not offer highchairs or booster seats. While that may be their policy, the way it was communicated came across as unnecessarily condescending. After being placed at our table, our child was kneeling in the booth to reach the table -- quiet, calm, and physically held between both parents. Despite the situation being completely safe and controlled, we were told again to get our child off the booth, with the same dismissive tone. If Hillstone prefers not to accommodate young children, that's their choice -- but that expectation should be made clear at the door. Speaking down to guests mid-meal is not acceptable. Professionalism and basic respect should be standard, regardless of policy. read more

Took my wife here for her birthday and everything from the entrance to our table was outstanding. The dim lighting inside was nice as well. Waitresses were super nice and very attentive. I know they are known for their French dip but l ended settling with the steak and frittes. Prior to the steak, I had the nigiri sampler and for a place that's not a sushi restaurant, the nigiri was a solid 10/10. I could tell the rice was just made as it had a slight warm temp so I knew it was fresh. The fish itself was fresh too and it doesn't compare to an actual sushi restaurant. There was something about the fish that was different than the ones at an actual sushi restaurant but it was still phenomenal and I've been to several sushi restaurants. I ordered the steak medium rare and came out medium rare. Even the fries were delicious too! Not soggy or even oily on my fingers. A simple plate but very flavorful. My wife had the salmon which was cooked to perfection with a slight crust on top with a very soft inside which paired well with the broccoli. We had the host surprise us with 2 glass of red and they paired with everything we ate. Then I ended up getting an old fashion which was made excellent. My first time here with my sister and adopted dad who told me about this restaurant. We met around 5pm and very happy to have had a reservation because the dining area and bar were a little crowded around that time. The atmosphere was nice and open. The kitchen was where you can watch the preparation of the food. The chatter from the talking wasn't too loud for me, but my adopted dad who is over 70 said it was a bit much for him. The service was great and the food was delicious. I ordered a different type of sushi that I had never had, which was the cucumber and avocado roll. It was very good. The cucumber was used in place of the sushi paper. I also tried the southern style brussel sprouts which I loved had a very tastey lemon aioli drizzled on them. A quite unique and thought-provoking experience. While the food was good, the atmosphere and environment of the restaurant are awkward, uninviting and uncomfortable. Upon arriving, we were told that we could not sit at the bar before our table was ready. When we were finally sat, the food was excellent but the waiters and waitresses portrayed robot like characteristics with their responses and actions.
