Used to absolutely love this place. It was a go to when we had guests from out of town.The rolls are unique and fresh. Over the last year the quality and the service has gone to absolute garbage! Don't ever expect to get your entire order, that would be to hard for them to read the entire paper. Servers legitimately just drop of food from other tables because they are not paying attention and don't care. Fish is slimy and old, with terrible presentation. When we left we could not get home soon enough to eat anything leftover in our fridge just to get the taste out of our months. I kept coming back in hopes that I just picked a bad day but no, it just gets worse each time. ( I'm tired of people using Covid as an excuse for crap service, CoViD is not an excuse to not care ) I would highly suggest any of the other sushi places in south Reno, the rolls may not be as unique but the quality of the service and food makes up for it ten fold! Not what one would expect from a sushi restaurant. Service was nothing special. I am still trying to find sushi in Reno that is anything more than casino food. Even the casino sushi places that are supposed to be excellent are not good. I didn't finish two of my orders and I only ordered! Tamago,, Hamachi and veg Tempura before I tapped out. Nice little sushi joint. The owners are great. The food is on par with most sushi around Reno and the all you can eat price is about a buck cheaper. The food tastes fresh and most of the rolls are done well. I think this places downfall may be its limited roll menu. It's much smaller than most sushi bars in the area. The owners let you know that they will make you anything you want which is great but I'm not sure how the small up front menu will come off to most people. Overall a nice lunch. You should try the place out. And don't be surprised if the owner asks for genuine input. They seem like honest guys that really want to make the place something great. read more

My husband and I got 2 orders of the takeout special and were so excited to eat it we forgot to take a photo! For our 2 apps we got tempura veggies and the cucumber salad. Both were very yummy. The rolls we were workout, ceviche, catepillar, and dragon. They were all really good! The ceviche was so light and refreshing with lemon coming through. Gerson, the owner, is the sole purpose that this place is so outstanding. The customer service outstanding. We walked in tonight, waited about 15 minutes which was not bad for a Friday, and sat at the bar. Before we could even get words out Herson had my go to order (Golden gate with spicy crab on top) and my husband's R&B up on the bar waiting for us. We hadn't been in for a month or so and he still always recognizes us and takes such great care of us every time we come. We had the muscles, miso soup, and the yakiton for appetizers as well as golden gate, spicy crab hand roll, San Francisco, and the 300 roll. I've been to Hinoki a few times now and have never had a problem with it, delicious rolls. Last week I got takeout and after eating, a few hours later, I experienced an extreme stomach ache that kept me up until 4am. I had a dull stomach ache that continued for a few days after and I finally went to the doctor to see what was up. The doctor said the rolls I ate probably contained a contaminant that didn't sit right with my stomach. My stomach ache finally disappeared after day 3 but I will never eat here again. read more

Possibly my new favorite sushi place! First time here today (with 2 of my teenage daughters) and we had a great experience! The restaurant wasn't much to look at (nothing on the walls), but was clean and comfortable. The service was just right - despite it being a Saturday at noon, we were able to be seated right away. The staff kept our drinks full, plates cleared, orders taken, and check brought to us at just the right times. There wasn't a single mistake in our orders. I find service at tables to be slower than at the bar in most sushi places, but our service (and that at the other tables I could see including a big party of 8-10 people) was excellent. The food was also awesome. The rolls had great ratios (not too much rice) and great flavors. The appetizers were pretty standard, but worked for me (I'm there for the sushi). My only negative on the food was I felt that selection of rolls was not as extensive as I'd like. The highlight for me was the nigiri - the slices of fish were beautiful, fresh, and melted in my mouth with just enough rice underneath! I was in heaven with the nigiri I ordered! We had a scoop of ice cream for dessert, which I wished had been mochi, but was a nice end to the meal anyways! Overall, awesome sushi experience today! They have some really creative rolls that are definitely worth trying (Ceviche and Casanova come to mind). The Dragon and Samurai were also very tasty options if you like a bit of spice. I absolutely loved their unagi. It's perfectly cooked and was lightly charred, which added a nice flavor. The food is great. For the price you pay you definitely get your moneys worth and more. Delicious and totally worth going if you are okay with bad customer service. They took forever to come and get our order sheets. By the second round of food we had ordered a lot so they cut out some of the things we ordered. Which is kind of a bummer. I'm not sure why you would leave things out of the order if we are paying for it but okay. The waitresses were so rude and kept asking us if we are done because we kept ordering more. I've never had AYCE sushi before so this was a first. Decor is very simple, but it's pleasant. The people at this restaurant are super nice - service is great - very friendly servers and they brought everything i ordered really quickly. They let you order anything off the menu for $20 at lunch time. Includes the cooked options like chicken teriyaki, tempura, salads etc, in addition to the sushi. I was somewhat disappointed by the quality of the rolls - especially the one with tempura shrimp inside. The shrimp tasted like it had been made way too early (tempura coating was hard and not freshly crispy). But the yellowtail nigiri sushi was a generous cut of fresh fish - it was my favorite. The ceviche roll was ok, wouldn't order it again. This is a very good restaurant, especially for the price, but it is not as good as other sushi restaurants in the Bay Area or LA. New hot spot and now my favorite place to have sushi! They had just the right amount of spices without being overpowering. Overall I thought the freshness of the food was excellent and when the opportunity presents itself again I will choose to dine here again and again. I like to also add the chef and waitress provide fantastic service. Chef David is personable and got to know our likes and dislikes. I've been in Reno for about three years now, and all of my friends recommended Hinoki to me as the best sushi place in Reno. I finally had the chance to try it, and I can wholeheartedly agree with them! Although it's a long way from where I live (I live near the university), the drive is definitely worth it. The prices are standard and affordable! 19.99 for lunch and 24.99 for dinner. If you get at least 3 rolls and 3 appetizers, you'd definitely get your money's worth. I like Hinoki because the ingredients taste fresh. I like how the restaurant is set up so you can see the chefs making the sushi! I recommend the tofu and takoyaki as the appetizers. Although I can't have them due to dietary restrictions, my boyfriend loves the mussels here too. I love takoyaki and am pretty picky when it comes to it because Vegas has really good takoyaki. I would say Hinoki is one of the few places that serves takoyaki and it tastes GOOD! I also recommend the salmon nigiri, king kong, mermaid, bonsai, and eel nigiri because I'm mostly into cooked rolls. Their specialty rolls are so good, and I've never seen some of them before anywhere else! My boyfriend and I went around 4 p.m., so it was pretty slow. However, the service was really fast too! Overall, fast and friendly service. I like how the waiters let you do your own thing, and just come around every once in a while to check up on you. They were also really friendly whenever they came to check up on us. The place is very clean, and I like how they make the sushi in front of the customer. The service sucked, the food was just ok. We asked for a set of cheaters but the server said they couldn't make us a pair right now, I'm assuming it due to covid regulations which is fine but if they are going to enforce the regulations the should enforce standard health regulations as well, I watched one of the sushi chef repeatedly wipe his face forehead and nose with his gloved hands then proceeded to make roll in between making the rolls he would sip on his monster energy drink that was sitting on top of the counter where he was working all well wearing the same gloves!! After my 94th check in, I think this review is the most reliable I've been here in Reno for 10 years now and I love sushi. I've been following some sushi chefs and gerson and his brother are the 2 of the best of the best. They have the best marinade for the raw seafood and the best roll combination that I never get tired of eating. Since they've opened up their own sushi place, I've never been more happy on my sushi quest! Hinoki has been my go-to place and I always get the fresh and tasty ones for some reason when we come here. My son had the record of eating 40 pieces of Crystal Shrimp here and he's only 8 years old he gets grumpy when we don't go to Hinoki in a month. If you want the total experience, go sit in the bar, put down the menu and tell him what combination you want. I'm telling you, they're more than willing to accommodate your request. But somehow, I always get their Ceviche, Playboy, and their signature roll, Hinoki that tastes so refreshing for a sushi. Least to say that Hinoki has been my favorite sushi place. This place though.....it's definitely not as hidden as it used to be. One of the newer joints in town, maybe like 3 years in business, anyways since the day I tried it, almost instantly because a once or twice a month type gig. I do have to add because I recently noticed that lunch pricing recently went up a little but I kind of get it because basically everything right not is going up so, congrats hinoki, you're able to do that as well Anyways the food....they just make it so good!!! I'm a huge fan of anything with salmon and lemon so the boys basically start busting those out when they see me. Staff is almost all so pleasant, I wish my boy Dave would crack a smile occasionally, just make you feel some kind of emotion, but I guess I'm not going there to feel liked I'm going there to eat some sushi and well they sure know how to do that. Exceptional all-you-can-eat sushi for a great price! Most AYCE sushi joint serve rather indifferent rolls full of cream cheese and krab and dejected pieces of salmon. Not Hinoki!! For $20 (lunch) or $25 (dinner) you can order any appetizer, any nigiri, and any rolls. We started with gyoza and edamame, moved into an assortment of nigiri, to include mackerel (husband's favorite) and unagi (mine), and then tried the ceviche roll and dragon roll. Delicious! Our sushi chef, Fernando, listened to us wax lyrical about a couple salmon dishes we loved getting in Japan and surprised us with his own take on them. Now that's good customer service! Sooooo good! We had a coupon for another sushi place but upon arrival, they were closed even though their website said they were open. We ended up at Hinoki and I am so glad we did! Reasonable prices and a great menu. Every roll we ordered was delicious! The wait staff was attentive and kind as well.
