The place is cute clean and smells fantastic! It's Friday night around 5:30 and the place is packed. There's a line out the door for to go. That is always a good sign! We are waiting for our table right now and about five people have asked me if I've been helped. Everybody is very nice and the person who is helping me has been very communicative. Stand by... We were sat pretty fast but waited a while for our order to be taken. They were really busy so no shade. Everybody communicated really well. We ordered the Wing basket and The smokehouse grilled cheese and a side of macaroni and cheese. Everything was hot and fresh. Wings are spicy and there's only one level of heat. They are whole wings. They are breaded and fried and delicious. The pulled pork on The smokehouse grilled cheese was delicious. The provolone was THE touch and they grilled it to perfection. The mac and cheese was creamy and piping hot. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will definitely be back. I was thinking I might want to try the banana pudding or the red velvet brownie but, I can't breathe! We'll have to do that next time. read more

Wet soggy no seasoning smothered pork chops- huge disappointment went straight into the trash!! That was a waste of money except the corn muffin was good. Ordered the smothered pork chops, macaroni and cheese and sweet potatoes. They swapped the mac & cheese for the sweet potatoes when I got there because the mac & cheese looked like some in the skillet not cooked in the oven type Mac n cheese. They should be ashamed of the smothered pork chops. The pork chops themselves are not seasoned at all directly on the meat. Instead they are battered in heavy thick breading and evidently kept on a steam table because all of the dough completely comes off of the pork chops. They show you your food, but when something is breaded and has gravy on it, you can't tell if it's soggy until you touch it yourself. Otherwise I would've left it all right there! I went at 2pm so the food should've been fresh, it wasn't. See the photos. The sweet potatoes are cubed and some were still hard. They should've been cooked tender if they are already cubed up that small. No seasoning I could taste except the sugar. Some of them are still hard. I don't know what in the world they did. Huge disappointment won't be back! Positives: They were professional over the phone with taking the order, but not knowledgeable about the smothered pork chops being a lunch item too. I had the Bourbon peach burger : Bourbon peach chutney Two beef patties seasoned with smoke salt, bacon airlines, and provolone cheese. The patties were juicy and seasoned with just a tiny kick, and the Bourbon peach chutney made it very flavorful. Greens with smoked turkey! I love the fact that they don't use pork in the greens. They were seasoned perfectly, just the right amount of spice. The portions are very big, and the sides are almost double what other places provide. I saw other customers' plates, and they were all loaded. It's definitely worth the price, which is very reasonable. HIS place is a classic diner featuring chicken&waffles, Ribs&soul food. This is southern home style cooking with some southern hospitality My husband had ribs with bourbon cream corn prepared with onions and peppers and Cabbage cooked with red pepper flakes and bacon. I dont eat pork, so I only tried his corn, and it was delicious! They don't hold back on the spices. Bet you never need to add salt and pepper here! I also like the location. It's near 465 and there is plenty of parking. The one thing I don't like about downtown and broadripple and such is the headache of parking... or lack there of I'm adding His Place as one of my favs. read more

Out in Indy for the race festivities and found this place on Yelp. It lives up to its reputation. Good BBQ, good sides, good people. Oh, and a good measure of a place is how good their unsweetened iced tea is. It's great here. read more

The first bit brought tears to my eyes. I'm not kidding. I ordered the entree combo - since this was my first time, I wanted a taste of everything - selecting the fried catfish filet (lightly battered with a beautiful seasoning), fried chicken wings (crunch, light, and packed of flavor), the dressing, and the "brought tears to my eyes" collard greens (buttery, melt in your mouth, simmered in the perfect combination of seasoning and turkey juices). A little cornbread muffin is included. I split the mac and cheese with a friend - because why not - loved it. I commandeered a bite of chicken n' dumplins - woah. This is what I would dream about on a cold day. I'm going back. Here's what to know: if going on a weekend (we went on a Saturday) get there right when they open, it's not a large space and is constantly full; the staff is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable; the service is a well-run system (you're never waiting, someone is always checkin in on you, and they are just incredibly friendly); while they always have two of the desserts on handy, they don't always have the specials - because... they.are.made.by.the.owner. Portions are well sized. The side salad was large, the bowl so full it was hard to eat without it falling all over the table. We had the manhattan which was flavorful and a good amount of gravy. But, I didn't feel great afterwards so I am wondering about the food. We order pie for dessert and they were individual round small pies. They were just ok and I wouldn't order them again. Overall, worth another try but not at the top of my list. read more

Oh my goodness!! We decided to stop eating at chain restaurants and do more local places so we tried His Place Eatery. Saturday night is was busy but still tables available. Their carry out business appears to huge but we dinned in. Ordered the fried chicken and chicken pot pie. I am going to just say it, the fried chicken is better than Hollyhock Hill! And more reasonably priced. Juicy, perfectly seasoned. Portion was plentiful. For sides I got mashed potatoes and Mac n cheese. Both delicious. The max n cheese especially good. My husband was in heaven with the pot pie. Our server Jenea (sp?) was wonderful. Friendly and personable. We will be back, heck probably next week. read more

In town to support family members up from North Carolina for the AAU Basketball Tournament. So we went to a spot I'd heard rumors of. Well, consider this review as confirmation. Chef Jones and Samara, as well as the Wait-list Hostess made me and my family feel like honored guests. The food was well on the "Yes I want more, but I'm too full side!" Seriously. We did want dessert, just couldn't fit it in. The helpings we're more than generous. The food was "All Right." And that Kudo was given by finicky teenagers, lol. Personally, I thought it was more than "All Right." It was delicious...and very good. My understanding is that this place has been a fixture in Indianapolis for more than 13 or 14 years..here's to many more to come. I definitely think anyone going in the direction of Indianapolis need to stop and check this place out. read more

The food is very good but their RULES are ridiculous. Their policy of not seating a party unless everyone is present is different than most restaurants. We had a party of 6, 5 of us were present. It was not crowded. The person missing was stuck in traffic. We explained that to the hostess but she said, sorry it's the rule. If she seats the 5 of us she would not be able to seat the 6th person with us when she arrives. She would have to eat alone. The 5 of us (all in our mid seventies) stood for 40 minutes. When our friend came we left and had lunch somewhere else. We will never eat there again. I feel the hostess should have more autonomy to view the situation and act accordingly. We have eaten at His Place Eatery multiple times, and we have not ever been disappointed. The food is what one would expect, in my opinion as; Sundays at grandmother's house. The food is excellent. The portions are plentiful, and the drinks are refillable. The Eatery is a molten pot of diversity. Ask for Miss Loe when you want to go in and sit down to eat. She is a wonderful lady with a dynamic personality. The owner, makes his rounds around the dinning area, which is a wonderful courtesy. read more

I can't believe that I've never been here before. Borderline tragic. I met a friend here for lunch and upon entry I was warmly greeted and seated. Our server, Mikayla, was an absolute gem. I've been living abroad and haven't had even proper soul food awhile, so I was in the mood for allll the deliciousness but couldn't decide. Based on our servers recommendation I went with the grilled cheese with brisket and, of course, Mac 'n cheese and candied yams (and peach cobbler for later) . I also ordered the Uptown which is their version of the Arnold Palmer. I don't normally like Lemonade/Sweet Tea mixes but this www so good. Not too sweet. My thirst was quenched. My food was soooo delicious. Worth every single calorie. I couldn't eat it all but you better believe I will have it later today with the cobbler. All in all a good first trip. I might have to add a second to try the fried fish before heading out of town. Yummmm read more

First time eating here and we're already thinking of what we want to try next!! They seriously treat you like family. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance inside was comfy, cozy, and homey.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were seated as soon as we walked in and asked if we had been there before. Since it was our first time, our waitress, Neani, welcomed us warmly and gave us some recommendations! We ordered the Turkey Manhattan and the chopped brisket sandwich with green beans and mashed potatoes & gravy on the side. Sweet tea too! The food came out fast and as soon as it did the chef came over, welcomed us, and wished us a delicious & blessed meal. From the first bite we were HOOKED!! Our girl, Neani, came back often to check on us and made sure to keep our sweet tea's filled. Which by the way, the sweet tea was perfect and some of the best we've ever had, in the north and the south. Once we were almost fully stuffed, we ordered peach cobbler to share. When I say this peach cobbler was so good it was hard to fathom- I'm not kidding. Warm with a little crunch and a nice scoop of ice cream on top! It was a giant portion that my boyfriend and I could not even finish together! We took leftovers home and ordered a banana pudding to go, which made the BEST leftovers. Today is national fried chicken day, so naturally, I had to go out for lunch and enjoy. I had visited his place once before and loved it, but figured it was time to get back. The service is lighting fast, when you walk in the seat you and take your drink order right away, the have coke products. I decided to go with water since it's so dang hot. For lunch I had the fried chicken meal, it was very tasty! I had white meat, a wing and a breast. It was crispy and full of flavor. I hossed it down like a last meal. Lunch also came with two sides, I had tasty cheesy macaroni, and mashed potatoes. All around delicious and I'm glad I got to celebrate National fried chicken day at a local place I'll be back soon since I saw a number of other tasty things I wanted to try out. read more

All I can say about this place is FLAVOR. That's what you'll get when you eat here. I ordered the fried cat fish, green beans, and mashed potatoes. The green beans were perfectly seasoned. The mashed potatoes were mouthwatering. The catfish should receive an award. This meal was so good it was hard to do anything active after dinner. Why? Because the food nearly rocked me to sleep. You know that good feeling you get after you have thanksgiving dinner? Well this restaurant will give you that EXACT same "feel good" emotion. The food sang to my soul. Go there! I had some taste for soul food and decided to head out to His Place Eatery. I heard great things about this restaurant and wanted to experience it first hand. It was rather crowded so I decided to get the food to go. The wait time was approximately 20 minutes and it did not seem like it. The staff was super friendly and ensured I had enough time to select the items that I wanted to order. I went straight in with the fried chicken wings, candied yams, and Mac n cheese. Once home I opened the food which was still hot and fresh and oh boy what a treat! The chicken was good to the last bone not to mention the candid yams and mac n cheese. I must say I now understand what the excitement was about. This place is also great for ordering a family sized meal. If you want some good ole fashioned soul food then make it your business to stop in to His Place Eatery. I know I will definitely and then to my top 10 list. read more

This place is a 10/10 in my book. I came in during the lunch rush but was promptly seated and waited on. It was pretty busy but my food came out quickly. I got the whiting fish with greens and macaroni. And the macaroni was probably some of the best restaurant macaroni I've ever had!! The fish was also very good and the portions were perfect. The sweet tea was also just the right amount of sweetness and the waitress was kind enough to give me a to go cup. I cannot wait to go back to try some of the other menu items. I highly recommend stopping by! read more

My second visit to this southern soul food Mecca and every bit as great as the first. My first time, the peach marmalade double burger was recommended by my server and was outstanding. Today I chose rib tips - a very generous portion of succulent morsels of smoked pork - flavorful and good enough to chew every last bite from the cartilaginous rib bones. My sides were 1) the best cooked cabbage with bacon I could ever imagine and 2) a creamy flavorful potato salad with just the perfect savoriness. Great personable and efficient service. It's a 'must' try. Next time I have to get the catfish - it looked so good at the next table and, again, huge portions. read more

After being turned away from other places, (It's Christmas Eve-early closing). We decided to come here. Even though they didn't have breakfast (which I wanted) I decided to enjoy what they had to offer. Enjoyable employees, the waitress was cordial, she knew exactly what the assignment was. My cousin, and I decided to get the catfish basket! WOW..let me say, it was amazing!! Crisp, hot, and perfect!!!! I tried to eat both pieces, I couldn't. There is nothing bad to say about this place. Everything about our experience was amazing. Ronnie was our server, super friendly and super helpful. He pointed us to the best things on the menu which just confirmed what we were already going to order! My husband's choice was the Brisket cheese toasty, collard greens and stuffing. Perfectly toasted and so yummy you didn't need sauce (but he used some anyway!) I had the smoked meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans. Highly recommend! Since it was my husband's birthday (but mostly because he couldn't decide ) we got two desserts. The peach cobbler was warm and the banana pudding was light! My first time eating here and it didnt disappoint. I took my gf and kids and everyone liked their food. Kids ordered fried chicken with greens and mac & cheese and, I ordered the southern fried catfish, with cabbage and dressing with gravy. Customer service was excellent and food came out hot and ready within 10 min. We ordered to go, but the ambiance inside was nice and the dine in section was a pretty decent size. read more

On November 12th I'm still on vacation in Indianapolis and I have got to try the chicken pot pie. I can't leave the state of Indiana to go home(Ohio) without trying it and it did not disappoint. We've been here all week for a softball tournament and hands down agree this was our favorite meal from the trip! The fatty brisket especially was incredible. Tender, juicy, packed with flavor, and honestly didn't even need sauce. This recent visit felt like a completely different restaurant. Apparently you can't request fatty or lean anymore, and the brisket I received was so dry it literally crumbled apart like beef sawdust. There was basically zero fat left on it, which also meant very little flavor. For the first time ever, the sauce wasn't optional... it was rescue equipment. The ribs were okay, but even they weren't what they used to be. They used to have that perfect fall-off-the-bone texture, and now they were just kind of there. Not terrible, just disappointing compared to how good this place once was. I'm not trying to trash Trax because I know how great they can be. That's actually what makes this frustrating. It feels like the brisket went from "Texas smokehouse masterpiece" to "beef jerky with a college degree."

The "patio" is their asphalt parking lot, which is sweltering in the summer, I've tried to go inside to cool off, but the A/C isn't working. In the winter, they crank the heat so high, it's like a sauna. The prices are exorbitant and most of the time I cannot get what I want. You would think with brisket being the highest priced meat, they would ensure they would have that every day, The parking situation is a joke. Very small lot, but can't be parked in on Sunday because Broad Ripple doesn't charge for parking, but you end up having to park either blocks away or circle the block for 20 minutes for a spot to open up.

You can order the meat only or get a dinner that includes 2 sides and your choice of bread (white, wheat, or cornbread). They provide very generous portion sizes. The rib tips are the best that I have had in Indy thus far. They are tender and the seasoning they use is delicious. You could eat them without any sauce. However, the sauce is what takes it over the top for me. They offer sweet, medium, hot, or they will mix the sauces for you. The hot has a pretty good kick as a warning if you are sensitive to spice. I recently tried the Bar B Q bun, which is essentially a pulled pork sandwich. The pork is finely shredded and the sauce is poured on top of the pork. It's almost a fork and knife sandwich, as the bottom bun gets soaked in the sauce. Their sides have definitely reduced in quality over the years. I recently tried the mac and cheese and greens. As a note, they only have greens Friday - Sunday and they often times run out on Sunday if you do not get there early. The mac and cheese was dry and had little flavor. The greens, which used to be my favorite in the city, reminded me of cooked spinach and weren't seasoned. The service remains great. With the amount of people waiting while I was there, they were friendly and efficient. I wanted to order chess pie and there were not any readily available behind the counter. They told me they had some coming out of the oven in the kitchen if I was willing to wait and they brought it over once done. It is carry-out only, so be prepared to take it elsewhere to eat. You can call ahead to place your order as well.

The chicken udon noodles were fantastic- packed full of flavor and tons of toppings in it. The short rib fell a little short of my expectations, but I had high expectations to begin with. We have had the short rib multiple times in the past- and normally it is a hunk of meat, similar to a roast. Now, it is strips of tiny pieces of meat with a bone attached to it. If the owner/general manager is reading this- GO BACK TO THE ROAST STYLE- the strips of meat was too much work to eat. Still packed full of great flavor though. I had the bridge to Anshun for my drink. I had never had Baiju before, but glad I tried it. It was a tangy drink that was also sweet- would say it's a must try. Business was quite brisk and the quality of the fare made it evident why that was. Parking is a little tricky but not too bad to navigate. There is some street parking but one of the pay surface lots or garages is probably the best bet. We spent $8.26 for two hours ($7 + fee) to park in the lot in front of the Bottleworks. It was a 3-minute walk. We were seated right away when we walked in. We were perhaps a little fortunate as I think next time I'd make a reservation. The one thing that was off-putting was the fact that they put a time limit on our meal. I thought I heard 90 minutes and my colleague thought 2 hours. We were not planning to be there any longer than that, but we all three thought that to be a negative. I understand why they do that, but they should re-think their approach to that policy. We chose to sit outside as it was a very nice evening. Their patio was nicely arranged and was a rather pleasant spot for a meal. Our server, Apple, did a good job taking care of us. The menu featured some excellent Thai and Southeast Asian choices. We started with the Spring Rolls which were wonderfully crispy and tasted very good. My colleagues had the Steak Drunken Noodles and the Chili Basil Pork and both returned good reports. I had the Penang Curry Chicken and was extremely happy with that. The spice level was perfect and it was quite tasty. Our final bill with food, drink, tax and tip was $101. At just under $34 per person, we were quite happy with the value. I'll look forward to returning.

For my main course, I ordered the lasagna, and I can confidently say it was one of the best I've ever had. It wasn't overloaded with cheese and instead complemented by mushrooms and pesto, and surprisingly light on the stomach. My husband chose the filet and rated it an 8/10, saying he thoroughly enjoyed it. We were so full by the end that we skipped dessert. The decor of the restaurant is beautiful, and the staff was incredibly attentive throughout our meal. The only downside was the atmosphere; coming from Chicago, we expected a more bustling vibe on a Thursday night. It seems Indianapolis is a bit quieter during the week. Overall, we had a delightful dining experience, and hats off to Arya for her exceptional service!

It's not just some typical chicken place. They got loads to offer and stuff your belly with. They have signature dishes such as chicken and waffles to in-house smoked meatloaf and rib tips, bourbon creamed corn, made-from-scratch chicken and dumplings, and sweet potato cheesecake. It's a simple place but inside, you'll see lots of tables and chairs so you can bring in your group of friends. And the people here are really kind people! Had to eat with my cousins here and we did not wait at all to get seated. We went past noon and even with the place being crowded there are always tables getting cleaned and ready to be used again. And since they have lots to offer, we kind of had a hard time deciding which to order. We got a good recommendation for one of their signature dishes. The red velvet waffles and chicken which is really a to-die-for signature dish of theirs. It's chicken drizzled with their very own signature cream cheese glaze for only 14$ with two sides which is french fries and their bourbon creamed corn. The corn is creamed and flavored with bourbon and prepared with onions and peppers. And then we also had their Memphis pulled brisket. It's a barbecue to the next level! The brisket is piled high on an onion loaf bun and topped with coleslaw for only 15$. Both were very delicious! Oh and we had to double the side of fries which is 3.49$ each. It was good. Today we were in the mood for something different for our post church lunch. Perusing reviews on Yelp!, we decided to give His Place a try. We were greeted and seated immediately. Our very friendly server, LaMont, was super helpful making recommendations on what to try. My wife opted for the smoked meatloaf with collard greens, creamed corn, corn bread and a cup of coffee, while I opted for rib tips with candied yams, mac n cheese with corn bread and unsweet tea. LaMont brought our drinks very quickly and told us food could take 20 minutes but would probably be ready sooner. Food was piping hot when brought to the table and my wife loved and devoured every morsel of his food. She described his meatloaf as a loose loaf (not dense/heavy) with a slice of bacon on top and lots of secret sauce, which was quite tasty. The collard greens were outstanding! Not overcooked, a nice smoky, slightly spicy, slightly tangy flavor. Really outstanding. The creamed corn was not sweet at all. It was savory with bourbon, onion and spices. He scarfed them down. As for my meal, rib tips were good! Lots of bark and unique seasoning and mop sauce. Really good! My candied yams were delicious, and the mac n cheese with was very good. Overall, two hearty meals with drinks and a dessert for &34.00. A bargain considering everything is made from scratch! I wholeheartedly recommend giving His Place a try. OMG! As long as I've been in Indianapolis for 18 years I have FINALLY TASTED THE BEST SOUL FOOD IN THIS CITY!. We woke up early Saturday craving a good plate of soul food. But I didn't feel like cooking so the search of Yelp was on.. I ran into His Place Eatery and remembered dropping a couple off there for lunch and they were telling me about the food. Being form New Orleans & my grandfather a chef that taught me from a child I can be real skeptical of food. I look for flavors, texture, & presentation. And Whoa!!. Nelly! The food was delicious!. WOW! I was so.. amazed! Our waiter name was #Brittney! Sweetie pie! She was great as well. We! live way.. across town but the drive is well worth it. How did I miss this! I keep asking myself! I wanted to take a moment to share my experience from my visit this past Sunday with my family. Unfortunately, our dining experience was unacceptable. We arrived and parked, waiting for a table for about 15 minutes. I found it quite disheartening when the lady owner informed us that they do not accept parties of seven, despite us consisting of four adults and three children. Additionally, as we were leaving, I overheard her stating loudly to her staff that they do not accept large parties. This left us feeling unwelcome and confused about what constitutes a "large party." I wanted to bring this to your attention because, despite the enjoyable atmosphere and the friendliness of some staff employees. I believe a more inviting attitude from the manager would greatly enhance the overall experience for your customers @ 30th and Shadeland. Thank you for considering my feedback. read more

It is just a hole in the wall in an area where there are many chains! It is not the most fancy place, that said, the food was well worth the stop. Our son mentioned this place as It was close to where he works, and something different. My wife loved the catfish, I had the smoked meatloaf it was tasty the green beans were AWSOME and my son had the rib tips. He enjoyed them. Service was prompt, staff was attentive, friendly, place was clean And prices were reasonable for the amount of food received. As Indy is my home town and travel a lot I do not eat in Indy often. This was my first visit although I've heard about it I just never had the time to stop by and try. I was treated with the upmost respect and from the time I entered and until I left. The hostess provided great customer service and our waitress Nichole was the bomb. To top my experience off Chef Jones stopped by my table to introduce himself. He didn't mind all my questions about how the business was started and if he could expand his business all the way to South Bend. Great service and plenty of food for me to take home. I will be back.
