It's a rather small shop, mildly lit but cozy and neat. We went on a weekday afternoon and there was one other couple there and only one server. The server was kind and attentive, not the best English speaking/understanding skills (I think Korean?) but definitely could communicate and order just fine. Upon being seated and ordering, each of us got a bowl of miso soup, some banchan, and water. We ordered the chirashi bowl and the 12 pc sashimi lunch box. Each of us were happy with what we got (I personally would recommend the sashimi lunch box if you like more variety in side dishes but still want sashimi). Everything was delicious, the soup, the banchan, the succulent sashimi (the fish were salmon, tuna, maybe yellowtail, and maybe snapper, not too sure on the last two), the oyster, the scallop, the potato salad, the fresh tempura, and the side salad. The fried tofu was interesting, the other layer was kind of chewy, not crispy, and had a sweet chili sauce. Not bad but nothing special. The california roll it came with was okay, nothing wrong but wasn't the best. Would definitely still recommend this tho! My brother got the chirashi bowl which seemed to have the same fish plus one, octopus, tamago, seaweed salad, and a shrimp. He enjoyed his food as well. We came on a Saturday night and the restaurant itself wasn't too busy. The interior was very clean and the staff was very friendly. The staff stated that they only open a few months ago so everything is fairly new. There is a fairly big parking lot with a good amount of spaces. They have a set of bentos also known as the lunch or dinner specials. There are a lot of choices of items. I went for the raw marinated crab bento. The bento came with a side of rice too small raw marinated crab, side salad, few pieces of sashimi, some tempura, a scallop and a fried tofu. The amount of food for the bento was fairly amazing. The meal itself was set in an aesthetically pleasing way. The meal had a lot of textures and the flavors complimented each other well. We also got two side of salmon sushi and the amount of fish to rice ratio was fairly generous. Although, there are not a lot of drinks options except for alcohol and soda. Decided to try this new place for a business lunch and I was super impressed. From the outside it looks like a hole in the wall in a small strip mall surrounded by residential but once you step in the decor is clean minimalistic and modern. Their lunch specials are a really good deal and for my first trip I tried the marinated soy crab because it's really hard to find this dish in the OC! It came with a lot of banchan and extras that you definitely will be full. For my second visit I tried their fish roe rice lunch special and it was delicious! It also came with Uni which I was not expecting. Service has always been exceptional and I think it's a family owned restaurant and I have a sweet spot for that. There aren't a lot of sushi places that are open late night so we decided to give this place a try. It wasn't too busy and the service was quick and attentive. I can tell this place hasn't been open long, everything seems very new still! Between 2 people, we ordered the 16 piece sashimi (30.99) and also the 3pc salmon nigiri (6.99) and 3pc yellowtail nigiri (7.99). Everything came out super fast! The only reason I give 4 stars is because I could tell just from looking at the salmon that it probably was not going to be the best. The color was a light dull orange rather than a more vibrant color, and upon tasting it, it didn't really have the same salmon flavor I'm used to (and I eat sushi very regularly). We ask for a table for six (my wife and 4 kids) and we hear the Asian chef and waitress speaking in their native language. A few minutes later the waitress approaches us to tell us that ALL the tables are reserved and keep if mind that this was a Tuesday around 5:30PM. Clearly,this restaurant is not family friendly and appears to promote the sale of alcohol as the two males appeared intoxicated. I will never support this business nor recommend it to anyone. As much as I wanted to like it and give more stars, I'm going to have to give it 3 and that's mostly because I have two other sashimi restaurants that are Korean owned that I absolutely feel hit the spot in terms of quality, portion, choices, and price compared to Hiyori. One place is down the street past Bloomfield. This place was a sushi place before but not like sashimi style. So the new place added huge booths so it gives that privacy feel but it can feel sort of packed and if this place were to be busy, there's not a lot of seating bc the inside itself is pretty small. So the food: you start off with spicy bean sprout soup (which tastes good but I prefer my other place which gives abalone porridge). It started off strong with an assortment of uni (and other things but I'll post a pic). If you just cannot ignore uni, then you might like this place. Also, they do give parts of tuna that other places don't but I felt the portion was smaller. For me, I felt the tsukidashi fell a little short and flat (compared to other places I've been, plus it's priced slightly lower with more dishes). The waitress was nice and with a toddler, they have plates and little side dishes for the little ones which I didn't expect so that was nice. I'm inclined to say you should give it a try but personally, I don't think I'll be back. But it does look like i would enjoy a different menu, maybe for lunch or something. read more

Visited Hiyori for the first time for lunch. Was pleasantly surprised by the clean, bright interior, because the surrounding outside commercial location leaves something to be desired. Food was excellently prepared, I had the broiled eel bento- very nice assortment of well prepared side accompaniments like sashimi, scallop, tempura, marinated fried tofu, which made my lunch interesting and delicious. How does this place stay in business? I say this nit as an insult but as a compliment. Why do I say this? $20 for lunch and they give you so much food at high quality. Their banchan comes with 3 dishes. The sardine in shihito pepper is excellent, kimchi bean sprout is tasty and the woodear mushroom is also very good. Then we have the lunchbox. It comes with Miso soup, salad, 2 types of sashimi 2 piece each which were big pieces and very fresh, a sweet and sour tofu, 3 pieces of tempura, a takoyaki, some pickled cucumber and the main course which for me was the fish roe over rice. They put so much fish roes that every bite of the rice was covered in fish roes. How do they give you that many dishes at that high quality and size and only charge $20? I'm really wondering what their profit margin looks like. I don't think this can last. They definitely have to raise the price eventually or cut down the amount they serve you. So while it is happening, everyone that loves sushi should definitely try this place asap before this changes. The value of their lunch right now is insanely good! read more
