I had such high hopes for this place, sadly this place was is very chaotic and unorganized. Service is very slow and lacking. It felt as if they were super short staff during the dinner rush. It took us over 30 mins to order our meal and over an hour to receive our first dish. Overall we spent 3 hours during the whole meal just waiting for dishes to come out. I feel that HL Peninsula can improve their turn around time with more staff. Maybe in a year I will come back and try this spot once they are all settle in and more established. read more

Luckily I didnt have to wait to get a seat at opening. The grand opening so far has been very disappointing. Long lines and terrible food. They shouldnt let people sit in the VIP rooms cause the kitchen cant serve food in a timely manner for dim sum. It takes an hour to get your food and will take an additional hour if you try to order anything else. They need to streamline their processes before sitting people down. Probably just need to focus on the main dining area which still needs to wait for food too. It may be the largest dim sum restaurant in the Bay Area but its kitchen doesnt seem to have the capacity or logistics to upkeep it. Not only do you have to wait for the food. It generally comes out cold or terrible quality. The egg lava bun had no lava. It was just grainy pebbles. I have been to the original location in Burlingame (always go here for dim sum), South SF location (I had my wedding here and it was excellent), Milpitas (it wasnt good when it first opened and i never went back), and this is by far the worst one. We had great dim sum at HL Peninsula, even on New Year's Day, and the food was excellent. Their dim sum is not the typical kind you find everywhere. Everything felt more creative and full of flavor. The pandan flavor custard tart was a pleasant surprise, and the broiled sticky rice with miso wasabi paste was really unique and tasty. The salted kumquat with preserved meat fried rice is a must try and easily one of our favorites. This place is a great option if you are looking for something a little different but still very satisfying. Definitely worth coming back for. Delicious food! Interior is really nice. Restaurant is definitely busy, so be warned (especially if you're going on a weekend). They forgot to give us a one item that we ordered two of so they took it off the bill. Highly recommend the supreme soy sauce noodles and the Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. We knew that Grand Opening Day was likely to be a zoo. I wantd to arrive before opening time but our guest's mom had to take her meds with food and he was afraid that if we actually sat at 10, she wouldn't be hungry. So, I took a chance and tried for 12:30 instead, figuring on maybe an on hour wait? We arrived to the parking lot at noon and it was a complete mess. Cars were circling in the hops that someone would vacate a space. Numerous vehicles were parked against curbs that were painted red. A couple of vehicles were on display at the front of the restaurant. We left the lot and parked in a residential neighborhood two blocks away. We walked back to the restaurant and followed the slow-moving line to the hostess podium. While we were there, another guest walked up shaking a slip of paper with a number written on it and she complained in Cantonese that she had been waiting for over one hour already. There were at least three hostesses working. When one of them finally decided to pay attention to me, she spoke to me in Mandarin. I told her that I didn't understand her and she switched to English, telling me that they were full and to come back another day. This is a pretty sad way to establish a relationship with potential customers. While Grand Openings often overwhelm staffs of new businesses, there should be a plan on how to reduce unnecessary traffic (vehicular and pedestrian) and some kind of good will gesture to satisfy those who were not able to be seated. At some point, traffic controllers should be posted at the driveways to stop cars from entering the lot when there are no legal parking spaces. Perhaps a coupon with a two-week limit worth a 10% discount could have been offered to those who couldn't get in. HL Peninsula is not a completely novice business. They have other restaurants in South San Francisco, Milpitas and two in Burlingame. Perhaps they're more interested in hosting large banquets over a full restaurant of happy, satisfied guests. They need to keep in mind that the most successful businesses make their bread and butter sales from repeat guests. I hope that they figure out their business soon. I've driven by several times during open hours over the past two weeks and the parking situation combined with the reviews on yelp will keep me from trying this restaurant again. read more

Every lane is one way and you'll be a fool to think everyone reads signs or follows directions. The lobby has more seniors than ADA reserved spots. While the large dining room + modern decor was very novel at first, it ended up just feeling like a cacophony of sounds, with tables quite close with one another (so you could basically hear every nearby conversation going on) to an obnoxious Chinese Birthday song playing on the speakers every couple minutes. We came in for dinner, and the server seemed to not be able to answer any of our questions (maybe because the restaurant was so new?). Food quality was decent though, but definitely on the more pricey side. I liked the pork sparerib the most, though it was drenched with sauce...most of the other dishes I had some qualm with. It was quite a spectacle to go on a Saturday and dine together with so many people. In fact this ambience made my Chinese American friend extremely happy. It was exciting, re4 nao4, reminds her of the best restaurants in Asia - China and Singapore. The service was pretty good. Authentic Cantonese staff, everyone speaks Cantonese. Good tea choices with a small fee. In addition to the classic chrysanthemum and oolong they also offer all kinds of famous Chinese tea. There's no traditional carts wondering around, one orders from a menu by checking and marking the selections. There are traditional dim sum, entrees and fish and lobster / crab from the tank. Never seen such big lobsters in my life. Parking wasn't too bad. We arrived late for lunch service so we had to rush a bit. Staff is friendly and patient. This place can accommodate various group sizes: large round tables, wedding banquets, private dining, 8 people tables, 4 people tables. despite their humongous size there were plenty of 4 person tables. We were a group of mere two were still seated in a four person tables. It was nice. There are plenty of rooms between two tables. The one next to us has many kids but it worked okay. Not a problem If everything is good why is three stars? Came right at opening on Sunday at 10:00 AM, so there was no wait at all. By the time we left around noon, there were people waiting outside, but not too many -- the restaurant is huge and can seat a lot of guests, so the wait probably isn't too long. Even though the place is very large, it doesn't feel comfortable. The tables are packed closely together and it's extremely noisy. Our table seated eight, and it was hard to talk to anyone across from us -- you really have to focus to hear what others are saying. Food-wise, everything was pretty average. Nothing stood out as exceptional, but nothing was bad either. One strange thing: the restroom only has five stalls, which is tiny for a restaurant that can hold over 800 people. There was a constant line, so I'm not sure if there's another restroom somewhere. Service was also just okay. There seemed to be plenty of staff, but everyone looked busy and a bit disorganized, like they weren't sure who was responsible for what. Then to cap it off you are required 20% service charge for 2 people that is completely insane for service that was already awul. So I deduct 1 for that. Besides that the food was good. I was wondering why there was so many large screens but I think thats supposed to distract you from the bad service. And it might take forever. So just keep that in mind. With that said it's worth a try I'm giving two huge warnings. You can get seated quickly because there is so much room. Will post in photo. 5) the Beef rice noodle's size is smaller than other dim-sum place, and the beef is not minced, very chewy. 6) Shrimp , Har gow is nice. 7) Char Siu Bao, the Char siu is lean and good, the bun is ok, according to my daughter. 8) Tea taste very good, ordered Taiwan Ali Mountain tea. 9) not enough waiter or waitress, they are super rush. Overall, they still trying to help. Respected. 10) 16% tip included. 11) Overall, I feel price is slight more expensive some other dim-sum place. Although the reception area was busy with an event in the main dining area, we were escorted to one of the VIP rooms. Due to it being Saturday and it being recently newly opened, It was an extremely long wait for the non dessert foods of over 45 minutes. The problem was worsened when A larger group than our three person group sat down after us and they started getting way more food than us, despite us ordering first and sitting down earlier. That's really rude. We got about 10 dishes - the shrimp rice rolls were good. The durian puff was really good. The pandan egg tart - didn't taste or smell any pandan. The beef rice noodle rolls, black truffle mushroom ball, ha gow, siu mai, and Other foods - we disliked the taste of these. They have a mandatory 16% gratuity charge for the bill, if you order tea that is a charge. With about ten plates and the tea, the bill came out to be about $112 for 3 people. read more

My honest rating of this place is 3.5 stars but I gave it 4 because I hope/expect it to get better as the business gets into its groove. I will come back intermittently to see if it is improving. A lot of the negative reviews here seem to revolve around new restaurant start up learnings. This place is actually reasonably good, but there are slightly better places in nearby Dublin. They ordered 19 items... when I got there half of the dishes were already served on the table.. so I'm only rating based on the dishes came after I sat down. Steamed Xiaolongbao (小笼包), big chuck of filling... the pocket of juice normally squirts out and burns your tongue... didn't exist. 2. Salted egg yolk punkins... cold and soggy 3. Steamed shrimp dumplings, cold 4. Steamed chive dumpling, cold... 5. Cold Chicken with ginger, spoiled... I took a bite and spit it out. Dinner was supposed to be at a different place tonight but my brother wanted to try this place because there is no line.. haha... that should have been a sign not to go there. The only dish that was hot was the garlic veggie after we asked about it when we're almost done eating. $181 total, with tip included automatically in the bill (I thought that was not a legal practice anymore) They need to hire dimsum chefs and chefs that know how to do Cantonese style stir-fried. 东西炒得一点锅气都没有！ The Beef Chow Fun at the table next to us looked horrible. As a Castro Valley resident we were super excited to have the nations largest dim sum restaurant in town and to try it for the first time. We went on Sunday 11/23/25 and unfortunately at this time we have to agree with all of the low/2-star reviews. Upon check-in we asked how long the wait was and we got an "idk" response from the 2 hosts. An estimated guess would be nice? We were actually seated pretty quickly and we were in awe as well at the space and lighting in the big dining room. The server brought us the menu and hot tea or water quickly. This was nice but the service for the rest of the meal was disappointing. There was no consistent server and the staff roles were hard to follow. It seemed like colored vests could only serve food and black shirts could add items to orders? And pink vests could bring you the check and bill out? It wasn't really clear to us by the end of our meal but whenever we asked 1 person for help it would always get directed to another person. This led to a game of telephone and wrong orders being placed and wrong orders being delivered to our table. It happened multiple times. In addition, food was just ok - nothing impressive to outweigh the poor service. My assessment is that their restaurant needs some re-organization or more time to work out the kinks. It could be due to the size of the place but there seems to be really poor communication between floor staff, kitchen staff and hosts/hostesses. YES YES YES!! FINALLY... at last there is once again a great Chinese restaurant in Castro Valley (may Joyful House rest in peace). Amazing dim sum, great service, and that familiar bustling dim sum ambiance. Food (9/10) - I love the food here! They have great options and I don't think there was a single dish that I could fault. Everything was great. The standout dishes to me were the pork liver and the chilled and spicy chicken feet. I know! They sound very intimidating but to my palette they're simply AMAZING. Dip that pork liver in the soy sauce (it does tend to have a super-gamey flavor if you don't) and then eat it with a bite of rice. DELICIOUS... nice richness from the liver that coats your mouth for that sweet soy sauce and then tied together by the rice (BTW the seafood fried rice is BOMB too....). My other favorite thing was the chicken feet. Also sounds super intimidating but it's delicious! I love the springy texture with that nice spicy oil. Obviously there XLB was good (though not a fan of the rainbow one but to each their own), shu mai was good, but tripe was a little flavorless. Their mango crepe cake was delicious though! It had a slight "crunch" with nice texture and a balanced sweetness. **NOTE: They say that they finish every dim sum dish with a peanut oil. I have a severe peanut allergy so I decided to try a small bite (have heard that peanut oil doesn't trigger reaction) and actually, no reaction! *DISCLAIMER* Not to say that this is recommended but something to keep in mind. Price (8/10) - Price is pretty good and competitive with other similar restaurants. Big plate of fried rice is $20. Most of their dim sum and order dishes are also relatively good price. Nothing egregious and honestly, I would say worth for how good their food is. Service (6/10) - Even by my understanding of lower Chinese quality, the service here is MAD questionable sometimes. We asked them a question (regarding peanuts) and the server told me that they would be back with an answer. They in fact did NOT come back with the answer and had to ask them again. Servers did seem a bit disinterested at times. Overall, food came out fast though and the dining experience was smooth. Overall, delicious Chinese food. We went for dinner on opening night at 5pm, we were sat immediately. The restaurant is massive and well designed, they have 6 large projector screens that were showing a football game and could be used for weddings or celebrations too. They had music playing and even with 450-500 customers it was still easy to have a conversation at our table and wasn't too loud. They still had room for hundreds more and they offer a variety of private room options. We ordered our food within 5-10 minutes of sitting down after going through their ~50 page menu with so many enticing options. Dishes started coming out pretty quickly, we had 1-2 dishes come out every 5 minutes or so to pace things out well. Staff are constantly walking between the tables to check on drinks, bring out dishes, etc you can easily wave someone over if you need anything, we did a couple times to add some more dishes and get to-go boxes for the leftovers. Portions are pretty good, price wise they're slightly above other spots in surrounding cities, but the quality of the food is well worth the difference in cost. They have a variety of options for all budgets, especially their dim sum offerings during brunch/lunch that can feed a large family for cheaper than most places in town. I'm glad they decided to invest into Castro Valley, there is nothing like it anywhere nearby, it's a great spot that we'll visit frequently to have dim sum and large family gatherings. Even with the chaos of it being the grand opening night, the service, food quality, and atmosphere were fantastic. I'd highly recommend trying them out!
