In town for a conference and not sure where to go for dinner so we quickly checked Yelp and made our way to Hoboken Pie. We walked past quite a few pizza places, but trusted others who reviewed that Hoboken Pie was worth a go. The little shop has no seating so you can either eat at the planters in front or get it to go. We were a couple blocks down the street so ate back at the hotel. On the way back, more than one person mentioned that they saw we got the best pizza in the area. By the time we made it back we couldn't wait for dinner. It was awesome! We got 1/2 Meat Lovers and subbed bacon for salami at the suggestion of the owner. The other half was Mediterranean with really large feta cheese chunks. The crust was really good and had just the right amount of char on it. The crust is thin so cooks quickly and was crisp and chewy in all the right ways. The toppings were generous and fresh. Visiting our daughter from out of town & wanted some Pizza to watch the Lakers vs. Warriors Game. Ordered a Large Supreme from Hoboken Pie. Pizza came, and was not correct, and we couldn't get in touch with anyone at Hoboken. Put up a frustrating yelp review yesterday. Happy to say that Alex Dunn, owner operator contacted me personally about the review. He apologize for the mistake with the pizza & the inability to get in touch with him as they had some technical challenges that night. He was very gracious and understanding, not only did he refund the cost of the pie, but upon hearing that I have a daughter in school here he offered to give her a credit for her next visit to Hoboken. I was very grateful to have someone follow up who cares about their business and cares about their customers. I love the customer service but I'm sorry this is not representing Jersey competition is tight and the pizza I received half margarita and half pepperoni was so light it was like picking up a newspaper and the bread was definitely Pre- maid and frozen almost to perfect round which identifies as a Pre made machine pressed, disappointing! Even if you hand toss at room temperature is not hand made I know it machined. You could of made it up with good ingredients but really crumbled sausage that's New York! Hoboken sliced or nothin. The almost $6 per slice that they are charging is really not worth it; the crust is super thin and the toppings are put on there sparingly...I would eat it more often at $3 per slice. So sad to have to give this 2 stars. I had heard good things. I did order the cheesy garlic bread and that was pretty good. That gets it from 1to 2 stars. The pizza was another story. This was potentially the worst crust and dough situation I have ever seen. It was not like the pictures I've seen here on the yelp page, it was paper thin throughout and crust was hard and there were little poked holes, making me thing it was pre-cooked or something (see pics). There seemed to be barely any cheese. The toppings were good and well distributed but that did not make up for anything. You could tell the garlic bread was super fresh and dough was fresh for sure so I'm not sure how they went so wrong on the pizza. This is an establishment that understands the importance of customer satisfaction and service. Service was excellent. Folks helped me out by bringing my order to my car. However, my pie had hella cheese. If you like cheese bread then by all means. I ordered the Hoboken supreme I believe, pepperoni and veggies, maybe some sausage. Sauce wasn't plentiful although I know some people don't like a lot of sauce. Personally I do believe the amount of cheese was excessive. I would have loved more toppings than anything. All the veggies were thinly sliced as well so I didn't feel like it was a good bite.... This is a good pizzeria - because they do try to produce good pies. The dough is good, ingredients all fine, so why the low rating? Because of the sauce, one of the basic tenets of what makes a pizza great or not. The sauce was, to me, weird. It's sweet and spicy. Both which it shouldn't be. I've had good pizza with a sweet tomato sauce base and it was fine, but this was an overkill and a problem if you're spicy-averse like I am. For this reason, it's hard for me to come back to this place since I can get quality pizza with less problematic and quality sauce elsewhere. read more

I think the Casey B. review on May 2, 2024 is the most helpful to explain my experience. She took a picture of what I believe is exactly what was going on with my pizza. There's some type of semicircular indentation on the bottom. Do you see that? What in the world causes that? But mine wasn't charred at all on the bottom like it was with hers, so I think that helped hers stay together. Whereas with mine, those bottom indentations just caused the slices to just basically fall apart. I did the survey monkey thing or whatever and after reading so many yelp reviews I realized I did forget something. I have never had pizza with even 20% as much ash or whatever you would call that on it. Is ash the wrong word? Maybe there's a more culinary word for it. And I think thats related to yet another problem with the bottom of my pizza. Just like with Casey B. Who in the hell flips over their pizza to take a picture of it? That's how big of a problem it is with whatever's going on. Because on the bottom of my pizza were two thick black strips of I don't know what the hell it was. But it didn't seem like food at all. And I sure as hell wasn't gonna find out. But it seemed like some type of build up of ash etc that's coming off in about one inch strips that are fairly deeply embedded into the bottom of the pizza. I only had two slices but sure enough I got two of those thick black strips. Otherwise I was actually pretty impressed with the ingredients. Maybe a little too impressed if that doesn't sound too conspiratorial. Ingredients so good it must be a conspiracy? You can use that if you want. But the contrast with the ingredients and I don't know I guess its the oven situation was so drastic that it really felt like the ingredients were trying to make up for something. read more
