My friends and I visited Hong Yeon on the Friday before Fourth of July for lunch. We were expecting the restaurant to be super busy on an observed holiday, but it wasn't too bad! The parking lot is pretty small, so it was full when we got there, but there's a lot of street parking in the neighborhood. Overall, service was pretty good. The servers were really attentive when we got there, but were a little hard to flag down for the check at the end. We all ordered the $10 jajangmyeon special and really enjoyed it! I think this is my new favorite jajangmyeon on island. The portion was really good and the food came out fast. We had some leftovers - but just be advised they do charge for containers if you don't finish your food. Had a good experience and will be back if I'm in the area! read more

Me and a couple of friends try to get together every once in a while over dinner, and try to pick different places that we have never tried before. We decided to give this place a try AND they were also running a special on $9.99 Jajangmyeon. We walked in and were seated right away. We looked over the menu and decided on the Jajangmyeon, and shared sweet and sour pork and mandoo. Food came out quick and everything tasted perfect. (On a side note, I didn't realize they brought the scissors to cut the noodle LoL). To top it off, they gave us a little piece of (candied) apple as a dessert treat. Overall, we had a great dining experience. The place is nice and clean, and all the staff were really helpful and friendly. Parking is a little small though, but if the lot is full, there is also street parking along Isenberg. I would like to dine here again soon. This is a restaurant where you can enjoy delicious Korean-style Chinese cuisine. It is located about a 15-minute drive from Waikiki, near the First Hawaiian Bank in Moiliili. Parking is available on-site, but the spaces are very narrow, so street parking is recommended. The service at the restaurant is good, and the interior is very simple. I absolutely love going to Hong Yeon, they've got my favorite Jajangmyeon on the island! Luckily, they've run $10 jajangmyeon specials twice since they first opened and I frequent this place multiple times a week whenever they do. The portions here are HUGE so it's definitely really good value. And the flavor is earthy and just on point. I also order their tangsuyuk. It's good in the sense that fried food usually can't be all THAT bad. But the magic kinda dies once it cools down a bit, each piece becomes tough and chewy, and honestly a little rough where it's cut the roof of my mouth before. The sauce is on the tart side. Saw this place pop up on my social media, advertising $9.99 Jajangmyeon for the entire month of May, and I couldn't resist. Located on Isenberg where the old Maple Garden used to be; they really brightened and cleaned up the place. About 15 or so parking stalls to the side/back of the restaurant, with parallel street parking options up front as well. We got seated promptly, and the place filled up rather quickly for a Friday night. The service was quick, attentive, and efficient. As for the food, the Jajangmyeon was a little too bland for my palate, as I had expected it to have more flavor. The salt and pepper chicken on the other hand, was too salty for me. The bok choy and mushrooms was my favorite dish of the evening with just the right amount of flavor. I ended up putting that sauce on top of my Jajangmyeon. Portion sizes are definitely shareable. We got all 3 items in the medium size (smallest size) to share amongst 2 people and ended up taking home leftovers. To end it all, they provided complimentary candied apples, which was yummy, though parts of the candy were too hard, so I peeled some of it off and ate the candied apple innards. The jjajjangmyun here is really tasty and noodles have that nice, bouncy chew. The tangsuyuk was all right. It's the mochi flour style of batter so a different type of crunch. It's not my usual go to but not bad. What threw me off was that a large order of a certain dish (like tangsuyuk) is called "regular" not large. Anyway, now I know and the "regular" size is good for 3-4 people, if you order with jjajjangmyun (or jjampong, which also had a nice flavor). I still miss Eastern Paradise but this is a good alternative, especially since they have a small free parking lot (and ample street parking) read more

I came here with reservations. Not all jajangmyun are created equal. We came here because they were open later than Ondong and were pleasantly surprised. The space is clean and open. The AC is working. Service was good but we had to ask for kimchi and ask multiple times for extra onion. The jajangmyun: noodles were great. good chewiness. good sauce absorption. thick sauce. taste was slightly different than what I'm used to but the onions are so very tender and still crunchy enough to be satisfying. it also came out in like 2 minutes. if you want all the food at the same time make sure you tell them. Not joking. 2 minutes jajangmyun almost. In fairness I'd eat the jajangmyun again. We also ordered sweet and sour pork and fried mandoo because the picture looked great. Fried mandoo: NOT as pictured! did not come with a sauce- we had to use soy sauce and vinegar. it was pretty good for what it was. and cheap. Sweet and sour pork: HOOO boy- that thing was less sweet and more sour. very different but the fry was good. way too sour. it tasted like they cooked the sauce without vegetables and added vegetables sliced in after. so the veggies didn't absorb any flavor or impart any flavor. Truthfully, I don't think we'll come back when ondong is open or dowon... unless the sweet and sour pork is changed... but we really liked the jajangmyun even though it was slightly different than we're used to. I've gone here twice now for their $9.99 jajjangmyeon deal. Once during their opening and another time recently and their jajjangmyeon has always been good. My only critique would be that I wish there was a bit more protein in the meal. I think I only got two chewy piece of meat this more recent time but I also can't complain too much since the meal is such a good deal. Other than that the portion is good size too. As for any of their other dishes, I've only tried a few like their tangsuyuk and chicken in spicy sauce. The tangsuyuk was okay. Pork was a little dry and chewy. The chicken in spicy sauce was better but the sauce wasn't really spicy. Honestly the best thing is just the jajjangmyeon so I'd recommend just going for that. Parking lot is small but wasn't full the last time we went at dinner time on a Saturday around 7:30pm. Service was good and fast. Overall I think I'll be back for the $9.98 jajjangmyeon. read more

We ordered the Jajangmyeon, sweet and sour pork, yaki mandu and the stir-fried bok choy with mushrooms. Everything was pretty good! I think my favorite was the sweet and sour pork with how big and juicy the pieces were. The Jajangmyeon was good, but honestly I think another place does it better. The mandu and the bok choy with mushrooms were great accompaniments to the main dishes! They even gave us a fried pineapple dessert thjng towards the end which was nice. Petition to bring their lunch specials to the weekend! It's sad that I probably won't be able to experience their lunch specials for a long time because it can be hard to get off on a weekday. It's such a great deal because you get a a noodle dish AND an entree for an average of $25 and that alone can easily be shared between two people. My friend and I went a little crazy because we decided to get two of their lunch deals, on top of their Kung Pao Chicken and Shrimp Toast which in total gave us 5 dishes between 2 people.... Did we eat most of it? Yes. Did it hurt? Also yes. I would love to come back for their Jajjangmyeon - you can tell their noodles are homemade because the bite hits different and paired with the sauce is chefs kiss. I was a bit nervous to try their Tangsuyuk because of previous reviews of the strong cinnamon flavor but it seemed like they listened and learned because I didn't taste any! We could only finish half of black bean sauce due to onions dominating this entree. Noodles were immediately served warm and turned cold quickly. Finished all the noodles. An underwhelming experience. Sweet and sour pork: 5/5 stars. Heat hot, crispy fried pork coated in a light batter. Not oily. Pickled veggies immersed in sweet, thick sauce. Highly recommend using a separate serving utensil. Beef broccoli: 5/5 stars. My son only wanted beef broccoli and a bowl of rice. Beef was thinly sliced, tender and flavorful while broccoli, bamboo shoots were cooked to perfection. My son and I gave two thumbs up for delicious beef broccoli. Fried apple dessert: 5/5 stars. For the month of May, they brought back the $9.99 jjajangmyun special. The lunch combo jjajangmyun, now $26 if I remember because it was $24 before. In the Korean newspaper they advertised that they lowered the price on menu items but not sure, as I didn't really try to look and compare but only the lunch combo I noticed it went up. Seemed to me like not a big difference. Anyways, I still enjoy their jjajangmyun and the taste is still good, on the lighter side some might say but I'm glad it's not saltier as is. I tried their ganpoong chicken lunch combo - like sweet and sour and a little spicy which was good and good portion. I think the lunch combo with jjajangmyun or jampong; the entree is bigger than the portion size of the jjajangmyun/ jampong so you could share that. If you want bigger portion of jjajangmyun, you should get it individually. Also, I noticed servers weren't as attentive even though place was not busy at all, so that was a little annoying to have to wait for them to come out from the back all the time for refills. read more

Upon a rave review of the black noodles from a fellow foodie, I couldn't wait to try them for myself! Homemade noodles, the sauce wasn't too salty and it was the perfect comfort food. I could not get enough. My biggest complaint of noodle dishes like this are that they are too salty or leave me feeling tired and sluggish but that was not the case at all. I felt great after my meal and I am so excited to have found my new comfort food spot. We also ordered the sweet and sour pork, salt and pepper shrimp, veggie tofu, orange chicken and fried mandu and egg rolls. Everything was incredible. The sweet and sour pork was just amazing, I loved the sauce on the side, kept the pork amazingly crispy and the sauce wasn't too sweet. The veggies in the sauce made it extra yummy. The veggie tofu we ordered was spicier than I expected but I really loved the fried soft tofu and the noodles in this dish. I would order everything again and I want to come back asap. First time with my sister at this restaurant. We came 30 mins before opening and got stared down by the cooks at the parking lot so we decided to leave and come back later. Can back at around 6pm or so and got sat immediately. The restaurant wasn't as busy so there were still a good amount of tables open. We decided to order the regular jjajangmyeon, seafood jjamppong, tangsuyuk, and the shrimp toast. Everything was really good! I haven't eaten this in a while and was very impressed that the jjajangmyeon wasn't overly oily or salty, it was seasoned just right. The jjamppong as well wasn't overly oily either and was seasoned just right as well! The tangsuyuk was a little different as the sauce was sweet but had a more pungent vinegar taste and smell but still very delicious. Love the fact that they don't toss the meat with the sauce so you can just dip as you eat so it doesn't get soggy! The shrimp toast was good too! I enjoyed both of the dipping sauce it comes with. My sister liked the sweet chili more and I liked both the hot honey mustard and the sweet chili as it gives the toast a different flavor. Overall the experience we had was great. We had a great time there as well and love that the interior was redone so it's nice and bright inside. I will definitely come back and would recommend trying this place as well. They also gave us a candied apple for dessert at the end. My sister didn't really care for it lol and to me it was alright. It's like a battered apple with the tonghulu sugar coating on the outside but soft not that hard sugar. If you haven't tried this place, I would say to try it at least once. While traveling in late December 2024, I heard that our longtime favorite Korean-Chinese restaurant, Eastern Garden, was closing after nearly 50 years in business. One of our favorite dishes at Eastern Garden was their jjajangmyeon (짜장면), which featured thick wheat noodles topped with a savory mixture of pork or seafood, and vegetables in a stir-fried Korean black bean sauce called "jjajang" (춘장). Eastern Garden's jjajangmyeon was our go-to after-work snack or sometimes weekend comfort food. Although we had tasted jjajangmyeon at other local and Mainland Korean Chinese restaurants, we held the version at Eastern Garden as our "gold standard." However, earlier this year, during a free day of sightseeing, shopping, and dining out in Seoul, Korea, we visited the Deoksungang Palace with fellow cruise passengers who were also interested in Korean Chinese comfort foods. The wife of the couple, a Korean national, recommended Andonjang Chinese restaurant, so we followed them onto public transportation, walked a few minutes, and voilà, the restaurant appeared. She told us that Andonjang was historic, as it is the longest continually running Korean-Chinese restaurant in Seoul, and is famous for its jjajangmyeon and oyster jjamppong. We, of course, tried both dishes and exclaimed that the authentic jjajangmyeon was the flavor, aroma, and texture that Eastern Garden brought to our taste buds. That's when our disappointment about the Eastern Garden owners' retirement hit us hard. Luckily, I read about the Grand Opening of Hong Yeon Korean Chinese restaurant from fellow Yelp Elites in September and suggested having lunch with my husband after a challenging physical therapy session. We were aware of this restaurant's location and limited parking spaces because it occupies the former Maple Garden restaurant on Isenberg Street. When we arrived at the restaurant, all the parking spaces in the lot were filled, but we lucked out with a recently vacated metered parking space directly across the street. There were six groups ahead of us, but the turnover in the crowded restaurant was relatively quick, and we waited for only 15 minutes before being seated. The service was friendly and quick, as one of the female servers came to our table with a greeting and asked if we had any questions about the menu. We only had one question about the lunch special, which my husband was interested in, and she answered quickly, so we just placed our order. After taking our order, she returned with glasses of iced water and a small tray of chopped raw onions, pickled daikon, and a savory, mildly sweet, and spicy bean paste. FOOD: Lunch Specials -Jjajangmyeon + Tangsuyuk (Sweet & Sour Pork): A massive bowl of jjajangmyeon and a plateful of lightly fried and battered pork strips with tangy, sweet, and sour sauce in a rice bowl was gleefully delivered by our server. I was surprised by the generous portions of the lunch special, as they appeared to be full entrees. The taste, aroma, and texture of jjajangmyeon were SIMILAR to our previous experiences, and I'd say Hong Yeon gets my nod to become our new go-to Korean Chinese restaurant. The tangsuyuk, or sweet and sour pork, was also good, as its soft-crisp, battered crust remained crisp when dipped into the sauce. As for the pork strips, they weren't particularly tender, but they had a meaty chewiness and tasted somewhat bland. The sweet and sour sauce wasn't overly sweet or vinegary like at some Chinese restaurants. $24 -Jjajangmyeon + Fried Chicken and Hot Sauce Combo: My husband chose this combination after asking if the fried chicken was tossed in the hot sauce before serving or if the sauce could be served on the side. The server said that the fried chicken was tossed in sauce, and the hot sauce wasn't particularly spicy. I think she thought my husband was concerned about the spice level instead of the potential sogginess. However, he went with the flow and was pleasantly surprised by the crispness of the fried crust, the mildly spiced sauce, and the tender boneless chicken chunks. $24 We'd be likely to return to Hong Yeon for more Korean-Chinese or Junghwa Yori (중화요리) as our new go-to for comfort foods. 4.4 stars read more

Yep. been seeing all the social media post on Hong Yeon, nice & new Korean-Chinese restaurant, super close by to me, I was excited to check it out! This visit would make it my 2nd time trying this type of cuisine. The very first time was in Vegas and it was truly amazing! I didn't have that feeling while here but I have to say I can't compare apples to apples. First lets start off with the parking, the one thing I have to say is the junk part, the lot is very small, spacing is also small and with only one disabled parking stall, when I arrived there was only one tiny stall in the back which I know I will have a hard time parking, so I drove out to look for street parking with no luck, none avail. I just sucked it up and tried my best to take the small tight spot. The restaurant is very modern, welcoming, I loved what they did with the renovations. I frequent Maple Garden often so I kind of know the layout of the previous restaurant. Fyi-The door to the woman's restroom, you have to push real hard to enter. The staff were working very nice and attentive. They work very hard despite how busy it gets. We had great wait service from beginning to end, getting what we needed and answering questions I had. I had the lunch special in mind prior to visiting, it is a great deal, keep in mind only available Mon-Friday , dine in only. The lunch specials are $26. all one price, for full order of Jajang or Jampong, and choice of 8 menu items listed on the Lunch Special menu. The portion are huge and more than enough to share for 2. I opt for the seafood Jampong and sweet and sour pork. A cute tray of daikon, onions, and black bean is provided, along with complimentary hot tea. The verdict, I loved our jampong bowl of noodles, came with seafood ( shrimp, mussels & calamari) and vegetables. I love the broth, I asked the waiter if I could more broth but he mentioned the chef cooks them when its being ordered. Tangsuyuk, sweet and sour pork, came with a big bowl of sweet and sour sauce on the side for dipping. I like this idea so the pork doesn't get soggy. When I took a bite of the sweet and sour pork, it didn't taste the same as when I first had it, I had better. It taste a little bland, not sure if it is due to the sauce not mixed together?. They had non-stop customers coming in, majority orderd the Jajang, black noodles, seems like everyone is enjoying this dish. ( will try this next time visit) Spoke to the owner while I went to pay for my bill, asked him what the meaning of Hong Yeon which means together, he is also the owner of Choi's restaurant. No big deal but after looking at my receipt the next day, I noticed the price for lunch special: $26.91, plus tax. not sure what the .91 is for? Overall, we had a great dining experience. Dinner in Honolulu, Hawaii... Hong Yeon, a new Chinese-Korean restaurant, took the place of the former Maple Garden, a Chinese restaurant that had been across from The Old Stadium Park on Isenberg Street for decades. Parking was challenging on a Saturday night. The private parking lot was packed. We found a metered street stall, which was free because it was after hours! Yay! Inside, the restaurant was full! We wrote our name on the clipboard and had a seat on the bench to wait for a table. We all knew that we each wanted the $9.99 special: Jajangmyeon (black bean sauce noodles). We looked around at what the people around us were eating and also ordered the pork with sweet sour sauce and the shrimp toast appetizer. We were a bit disappointed in the shrimp toast because it was on the oily side. The dipping sauces (one was mustard-based and the other was like a sweet chili type) made it a bit better, but I was only able to just eat one. I liked the chewy noodles a lot, but avoided eating most of the onions. It did have a few small cubes of zucchini and pork. The $9.99 special ends at the end of September 2025. The sweet sour pork was pricey at $32, but i liked it more than I thought it would. The pork is lightly battered and fried. You can dip the pork into the bowl of sauce. My friend asked for a spoon so she could pour the sauce over the pork. We don't think we'll return soon. There are other restaurants with more competitive prices and easier parking. ***4.5 STARS*** When I saw that a Korean-Chinese restaurant opened in the space previously occupied by long time tenant Maple Garden, I knew I had to try them. I enjoy this type of fusion cuisine and what a better way to try them is to convince the fam to go so you'll get to sample an array of their offerings. With their advertised grand opening on 9/10/25, Hong Yeon (HY) is one of Honolulu's newest restaurants. They boast homemade noodles which sure got my family's interest. I wasn't feeling that great and knew I had to get out of the house so I asked sister if she was interested in trying here. Sent them their lunch special and also mentioned their grand opening special of Jajangmyeon at $9.99 dine-in only. Family's schedule opened up as their appointment finished early, so we met up at 12:30pm to a nearly full house restaurant. Impressive. I also saw grand opening flowers still on display. Glad to see this business starting off strong. Appreciated the much needed renovation as the restaurant is much brighter and livelier. Because HY is fairly new, there weren't many food pics posted on their Yelp page so we relied on what type of dishes we enjoy and ordered from there. I noticed the entrees are smaller when paired with either Jajangmyeon or Jjamppong. Because there were 4 of us, I opted to get full entrees of spicy shrimp, spicy chicken and sweet and sour pork. We also got 2 lunch specials and a full order of their Jajangmyeon, which is $9.99 until the end of the month. It didn't seem that long before our food came out. We snapped photos of our soon to be full table and it was finally time to dig in. THE VERDICT: Overall, food is made to order here and it was delivered piping hot to our table. The noodles were exceptional. Nice chew and the flavors were there. Surprisingly, the Mongolian beef and Sweet and Sour Pork were executed well. I could taste the wok hei and the pork was still crunchy. Happy that the sweet and sour sauce is automatically served on the side. We didn't think highly of their spicy shrimp and chicken was we had better at another restaurant. We also weren't a fan of their mapo tofu. Flavor was good but didn't like the usage of firm tofu. Texture was off and less desirable. Service was above average. Staff came to check on us and refilled our water cups and brought us takeout containers. Overall, a great first experience at HY where I'd be game for a return visit. I'd like to sample more of their offerings from their extensive menu. NOTES: 1) Do not park in the lots of neighboring businesses as your car will be towed away. If HY's lot is full, look for street parking. 2) I saw Jo Y.'s check in as we sat down and immediately saw her and Marvin. OK unfortunately I need to update this review. The first time I went, it was really, really great! I do remember that the jajangmyeon was a little more lukewarm than my wife's jajang which was a different type. We liked it so much that we came again and here's where the problems started. 3 orders of jajangmyeon, all very lukewarm.... We told the cook and she said maybe they didn't stir the sauce - it's already made. But something doesn't seem right. None of them were hot at all. It still tasted pretty good, but you know it would have been much better piping hot. They offered to give more sauce, but I'd rather have a new serving that was hot. It wasn't lukewarm in the way that maybe the noodles were cold and hot sauce was put on top; it was more like it was sitting out for a while. If that was the only problem, then that would have been marginally ok, but 2 of the people felt sick afterwards with stomach aches and the left over noodles we had went bad quickly. Everything else was great (and hot) but their main dish needs to be served hot and needs to be fresh. As a huge fan of jajangmyeon, I had been waiting to try Hong Yeon since I saw their "Opening Soon" signs! From their fresh, homemade noodles, to their perfectly hearty and savory sauce, to their large portion, their jajangmyeon definitely did not disappoint. While some of their other dishes are more pricey, this was a reasonable $14, and they also offer weekday lunch combos too. We also tried their Sizzling Rice Soup and Fried Chicken with Hot Sauce. The soup was flavorful and also included a generous amount of fillings, and the chicken also had a delicious, almost sweet-and sour sauce that wasn't too spicy (but as someone whose spice tolerance isn't great, no complaints there). It looks like others have had mixed experiences with the service here, but I personally thought it was great! We were greeted warmly by who I think were the owners or managers of the restaurant, and our waiter was friendly and efficient. We were also seated right away, which was a surprise given that it was a weekend and I had heard they got crowded when they were still offering their opening lunch specials. Service was quick and ambiance was great. Clean and bright atmosphere; gave a more modern vibe for a Korean Chinese restaurant! Bathrooms are important also and they were clean and renovated. We got the jjajangmyun, sweet and sour pork, spicy jjamppong, and kkanpoong shrimp. We loved everything except the kkanpoong shrimp. It was soggy and the flavoring was mediocre; not worth $43. My favorite was the spicy jjamppong! Very good flavoring and the spicy was so good, you'll definitely sweat! Highly recommend if you like spicy food. Jjajangmyun was solid and tangsooyook (sweet and sour pork) was very crispy on the outside and juicy and steamy on the inside! Not cheap but worth it in my opinion! We'll definitely be going back. We were in the area when my wife suggested we try Hong Yeon's Jajang. She had eaten at the former Maple Garden Restaurant numerous times, so she was familiar with the location. Her golf friend told her about this new business. Our timing was good - there was ample seating when we arrived. Everything appeared clean and attractive. We sat close to the entrance, near the cashier. My wife conversed with one of the Korean-speaking waitresses and ordered Jajangmyeon and the Sweet and Sour Pork Combo, which comes with Jajangmyeon. In the meantime, the place was filling up fast. We both had bowls of Jajang and shared the sweet and sour pork. The Jajang was delicious, and so was the sweet and sour pork. Yum!! Been craving this food since I've been watching too many kdramas... we ordered the jajangmyeon and sweet and sour pork. The jajangmyeon hit the spot, especially on a cold and windy day. Reasonably priced too for the portion size. We ordered the regular size which was already a lot of food, but they also have a large option. The sweet and sour pork was so crispy and that also came in a generous portion. The staff was attentive and the restaurant space is also very nice- lot's of tables. They have decent size parking lot too which was also convenient. I would definitely come back for the jajangmyeon and maybe try more of their menu items next time. read more

With a craving for black bean Northern Chinese noodles (jajamyeon) upon just returning from South Korea, wanted to try this newer Chinese restaurant. Hong Yeon filled the space of the beloved Maple Garden. Did a pickup order during early evening. Was impressed with the size of the individual order. Easily was three meals for me. Was it the best jajamyeon? After having some phenomenal black bean seafood noodles in Korea, this dish didn't quite hit the mark. So far tho, has been about as good as it gets in Honolulu. With parking lot and ample street parking. Would I be back? Absolutely looking forward to trying other Northern Chinese dishes or a repeat of tasty jajamyeon. read more

The jajangmyeon is worth coming here. It is even worth dealing with the parking hassle. Jajangmyeon isn't even my favorite but this one here is so good. The noodles are chewy and great texture. The sauce is great. Only issue I had is that there was too much sauce for the amount of noodles they gave me! So I ordered more noodles to soak up the sauce. They have TONS of other food as well but I'd come back just for this. I'm not sure why they have so much on the menu because they really don't need it all. There's seafood, meat, veggie stuff. So much. They have combo specials so you can try different dishes as well. Parking can get horrendous and people park wherever they want. There is street parking also but watch the meters. read more

Having heard a lot of hype about the new Hong Yeon Korean-Chinese Restaurant that had its grand opening in the former Maple Garden Restaurant space in McCully on 9/10/25, it was a good excuse to have lunch there. And, with Eastern Paradise Restaurant having closed in Dec 2024, Hong Yeon was a good replacement. When we arrived at the 11a opening time, there was a line out the door + no parking, so we decided to run a few errands before returning around 12n. Great idea, as diners were slowly leaving, so that opened up some dining and parking spaces. The star of the show for its grand opening is the jjajangmyeon. You can order it by itself for $9.99 (regular $16) until the end of Sept. 2025 or order it as part of a lunch combo (lunch hours on weekdays only). A national favorite of So. Korea, the black bean noodles were introduced by Chinese immigrants in 1948 and modified to a milder, sweeter sauce to meet the tastes of So. Korean residents. Through the years, these noodles became the prime dining-out choice for So. Koreans. We ordered: * Jjajangmyeon. The handmade noodles were delicious, creamy, and chewy, and the black bean sauce with diced onions, zucchini, and meat, was savory with the right amount of sweetness. There were many Korean nationals that were just eating a full bowl of these noodles, and I can understand why, as I would too! It was that good! A suggestion: ask the server for a pair of scissors to cut the noodles. As the noodles were long, we had difficulty in finding the ends and saw diners using the scissors effortlessly. (Choice of jjamppong, a spicy noodle soup with seafood.) * Fried shrimp with hot sauce. Twelve delicious lightly battered good-sized shrimps in a lightly sweet-sour relished sauce with hot red peppers that had a nice spicy kick. The spicy shrimps complemented the mild noodles well. We were also served an appetizer dish of salted onions to be dipped in black bean sauce and crunchy takuan. In addition to water, we requested complimentary hot tea, which was served piping hot and tasted very clear-tasting. Our server was Korean, as were most of the servers and were familiar with the menu items. Even with a full house, she was efficient in taking our order, bringing out our orders within 10 minutes, keeping our water glasses refilled, and processing our bill. The outdated restaurant interior was renovated to include modern lighting fixtures that made it brighter. The interior was very clean. There were tables of twos, fours, and round tables that could seat 5+ people. Banquet rooms are available. The hours of operation have been revised: Sun and Tues to Thurs 11:00a to 9:00p, Fri/Sat 11:00a to 9:30p, Mon closed; the restaurant will temporarily close from 2:30p to 5p daily until the end of Sept. to give staff a break. Credit cards or cash may be used; however, there is a surcharge for use of credit cards. Parking is an issue. The restaurant has a free parking lot adjoining it; however, the lot is small and fills up quickly, with drivers having difficulty trying to maneuver in and out of the spaces. Plus, there were cars lined up, waiting for people to leave to get their parking spaces. Metered street parking is also available, but spaces are often taken. Nice to see fellow Yelper Paul C with his family as we were leaving! A very enjoyable meal that we can't wait to return to try other dishes! Located in the old Maple Garden location, Hong Yeon was a hidden gem. The amount of food that you get with the regular size jajangmyeong was way more than I could've eaten in one sitting which I love. When we went it was 5pm on a Saturday, ample parking in the parking lot and on the street. We were seated quickly and provided water soon after being seated. When we asked our waiter about what was a popular menu item we were recommended the hot fried chicken. The chicken was so delicious with a tiny kick of spice and lots of flavor! I would definitely order again. We also ordered the sweet sour pork, however it was a bit too bland for my preference, the sauce came on the side so you could dip the pieces of pork instead of the sauce already being poured onto the pork. The jajangmyeong was flavorful and had zucchini, tofu, and onions in the sauce! The menu is so extensive that I found myself getting lost with so many options but I will definitely be back to try other dishes as it seemed like a hotspot for local Koreans which is what I look for when finding a new Korean restaurant to try. My only side note is that you have to pay $0.80 per take out container. I never like to waste food and I usually don't finish my entire plate when I eat out so I always get leftovers. Although I understand that it costs money for the take out containers I would've been more inclined to pay a set price for getting take out for our food instead of per container. read more

Came here for their September/opening special: zhaniangmian for $10! What a deal. Their other items are pretty pricey though, so it kind of evens out if you come with someone to share an entree and the $10 special. They actually have a lunch special that is a good deal. It is a combo of your choice of 2 kinds of noodles and a couple entrees to choose from for like $25. They are full sizes too so it's a lot of food. I'll probably come back for their lunch special because I liked their noodles in spicy soup a little more than their zhajiangmian. The zhajiangmian is kind of subtle. Like eating fresh poi. It was good, but very light tasting. I liked the noodles and found out they are made fresh. The sweet and sour pork is the dipping style served with sauce on the side. It was ok, not the best I've ever had, but good for the lunch special price. I think they're still kind of working out the kinks because one table beside us was served almost immediately and another table near us wasn't served until way after we got our food. It's also really busy. Maybe people are coming for the Lunch special, but it is a full house and we waited about 15 mins to get seated. This means the parking lot was super full too. The service wasn't exactly friendly, but it was efficient. Our waters were refilled. We were served a little plate of onions, black bean sauce and takuan while finishing our bowl of zhajiangmian. But the ladies waitressing looked like they were all very busy. There were plenty of workers too. I miss maple garden. Hong yeon took over the spot where maple garden operated for what...50 years? Inside, they renovated a little, but it still reminds me of maple garden :( read more

Good food & quick service! Went around 12:30pm on a Thursday & the restaurant was pretty packed. The restaurant itself is very well lit & pretty big. We tried the jajangmyeon & tansuyuk. Jajangmyeon was our favorite for sure. Tansuyuk was good too, however the sauce was very sweet (sweeter than usual). It was super unique compared to other tansuyuk's I've tried, but still good. We ordered almost immediately & got our food within 5 minutes. Prices can be a little higher than usual, so I would recommend going at lunch time for their lunch special combos. Parking can also be tricky if the restaurant is full, so you may need to park on the street. Would go back again! read more

Came in on Tuesday around 12 and we were able to sit right away. Everyone here is really nice and friendly, and I even got a cute little magnet from the cashier! I am one to eat at spots that I already like but I wanted to try a new jjajangmyeon and I found this place on yelp. My boyfriend and I ordered the lunch special sweet and sour pork combo with jjajangmyeon, a small bowl of jjajangmyeon, and a bowl of rice (good for soaking up the leftover sauce to eat with the pork!) The portion size for the lunch special was really good with a fair price of $26. The sauce for the noodles were so flavorful and the pork was so crispy. I also enjoyed that the sauce for the pork had a lot more flavor than other restaurants usually make it. I'll definitely be back soon! read more

The place looks very clean, very warm and cozy. Staff were not very good in English but service makes up for it. The food was great! Jajang and tangsuyuk in one place? Awesome!!! Plus, they serve the tangsuyuk's sweet sour sauce separately so you can dip it or pour it over. All their fried rice comes with the jajang sauce which you can also pour on your fried rice or just dip on the side. Portions were huge - not stingy at all so worth your money. Will definitely come back for the jajang/tansuyuk and try other items in their menu. Bonus - they gave us FREE apple candy for dessert which was so yummy.
