An obviously popular spot, with a wide range of clientele. Dropped in on a Tuesday night for a quick bite, and the line to the counter was always full. Service was quick and friendly, however, so no complaints there. Wooden tables with paper towels and saltines crackers. Seat yourself and scarf down whatever it is you get. I drive by this place almost on a daily basis and have been wanting to try it out because it "looked cool." We were wandering up and down McKinney and decided to go here and luckily we just got there at just the right time. Right after we ordered and found our seats the place was packed, by the time we left there were people waiting for our table. The place was clean even though from a distance it looked like it might be a sloppy diner type of atmosphere. The counter service was quick and friendly. I ordered one of the shrimp combos (comes with fries and hush puppies) and I really liked it. The fried shrimp did not have the yucky fried greasy taste to it, in fact it wasn't really greasy at all. The poorest excuse for a Poorboy sandwich. We ordered to go and upon arrival had to wait another 10 minutes due to the fact that the girl who answered the phone did not correctly put in our order. Specifically asked for a mixed seafood of oyster and shrimp. It came with 2 shrimps and 3 oysters (very sad) with no flavor whatsoever. The fries were cold and the bread was not toasted well. Back in the day, a few people probably said Yah It's Aight...and through the years, that has morphed into OMG, you have to go! I had a standard dish of fried catfish, hushpuppies, and fries. Service was pretty fast considering the dining room was packed (It always is so expect it). But, then again, all they do is throw that shit into the fryer for most orders. I thought the catfish was nicely breaded (could have enjoyed some extra seasoning) but they had a plethora of cajun sauces to douse the filets with. I was upset with my hush puppies- seemed store bought and not very exciting. No kick or anything. Could have had 'em at Long John Silvers. Seating was dicey inside. I thought it was great that there was a sign that said "DO NOT SIT TILL YOU HAVE ORDERED", but the Highland Park'ers that took a small day trip from their safe zone don't play by the rules and secured a number of tables when they shouldn't have. So, us middle class folks enjoyed 103 degree heat on the patio. Yuck. Beers were cold but I would have liked to see to Northeastern seaboard brews featured as this is a fish place, not some average taco/burger joint. I'm going back for the salmon/veggie platter next time as someone ordered that after me and it looked really fresh and delicious. Furniture shopping made us hungry. The kids kept chanting they wanted catfish. At one point, they were on a catfish kick and had to have catfish every weekend. A quick search on Yelp of who had catfish and a look at the reviews we decided to stop here. HL&S is a little shacky and had all things nautical on the outside of it. I made an account exclusively to review this establishment. Wow. I fear that words are inadequate to describe how bad this food was. Starting with the sides- The fries were soggy, wet, and bland. The hush puppies were dry beyond belief. Moving on to the entrees- The shrimp and fish was some of the most profoundly bland food i've ever tasted. The breading was clunky, unseasoned, and totally suffocated the protein, way too thick. The shrimp tasted old and left me feeling sick. I'm embarrassed to have paid $15 to eat the food that I was served here; it ended up in the trash. Truly terrible. I would give zero stars if I could. The combo is definitely the play for a first timer since it gives you a variety of their staple items. The batter is light so it doesn't overtake the taste of the shrimp or the fish. The hushpuppies have a nice season to them and are elongated to look like mozzarella sticks. I like mozzarella sticks, so this was a plus for me :) The fries were the only weak item here. This is a favorite place of ours in Uptown, reminding us of the "fried fish" places that dot the beaches of the Gulf Coast. Most often, I choose the fried catfish, but occasionally, I'll try the healthier options of grilled salmon or trout. You can opt for grilled veggies instead of the regular fare of french fries and onion rings, but always try to make room for the hush puppies (maybe the best thing on the menu). My husband use to take me here when we were first dating. Love it. I always get the catfish combo and we always order the hushpuppies. They have a small kick to them but they are so good. My most recent visit was with my oldest daughter and two sons. I wanted to try something different so I ordered the rainbow trout. It was really good. She liked her catfish but we both didn't like the steamed vegetables as much as Flying Fish at Firewheel Garland and then we both didn't like the rice. The only downfall that I remember even as a couple is that the place is small and it gets so packed it's really hard at times to get seating. They even have signs to order first and then be seated and that doesn't work out. The seating is saved while others order. We've even done this before in the past times. It's not a convenient or comfortable place with small children! The line is literally right by the table we originally sat down at, with a mans butt near my face, so we moved. It was better but it's a small place so you are packed in there like sardines. They do have some outside deck seating that is covered. My husband and I have done that before but with my 10 month old that will not work and then especially if the weather is cold which it was that day, it's worse. Not very much space for high chairs inside either, as a matter of fact my 10 month old hit his mouth on the high chair. People kept passing by to get to bathroom and it was frustrating. The same guy is there from over 10 years ago! Very friendly and the service is pretty fast. If you are going with a big group for lunch or heck, any other time, good luck on the seating, you might have to sit immediately outside or prepare to wait somewhere. read more

The place is a play on a fishing/dock shack with limited indoor and outdoor seating and even less parking. Each table inside is adorned with a roll of paper towels, an assortment of condiments and there's ketchup and tartar sauce dispensers in the back for you to serve yourself. They have an array of fried dishes, but I always go for one of the grilled fish fillets (usually trout) with vegetables. I can't believe some people actually gave Hook Line and Sinker some very low reviews. Including a few people that actually rated them only one star. I don't know why in the world they would. Their food is great! And, has actually greatly improved over the last 12 years that I've been eating at their original McKinney Avenue location. The food is fresh, tasty, and delicious. I love their Mexican style shrimp cocktail topped with lots of FRESH chopped avocado, fried oysters, fried shrimp, fried catfish filets and of course, their friendly and accommodating counter service. They have a grill for salmon and catfish if you're not interested in fried foods. I also appreciate the large, varied selection of hot sauces available on EVERY table. Crystal (brand) hot sauce from Louisiana is my personal favorite. There's also condiment stations for lemon quarters, ketchup, and their delicious tartar sauce. I could give Big Shucks a (very) slight edge on some dishes but HL&S is only 1/2 mile from my home so there's no contest as far as I'm concerned. read more
