First time here at Hoshi. Came here after driving into town pretty late and had some sushi cravings. There were a couple people waiting in line before us even though it was close to like 9pm but got seated pretty quickly. There is no AYCE right now but everything is 50% off so it's a sweet deal. Food: 2 stars The variety of sushi was good. Got about 5 different rolls and some nigiri which ended up costing about $50 to feed 3 people. The sushi was nice and the fish to rice ratio was decent but the rice was very hard which is why I give it 2 stars. Feel like the rice is crucial in my sushi experience so it was a shame cause i thought the flavor of the rice was pretty good. Cleanliness/Customer Service : 5 stars The staff still wore masks even though the mandate is no longer there so i felt safer seeing that! There was hand sanitizer by the ipad you check in with as well. The staff were all very nice and pretty attentive as well :) Overall, i'd give this place another try just to check out whether the rice was having an off day or cause it was super close to closing time already. As you walk in, there is a huge QR code for the menu, but nowhere else. Since the print menu is not available, they should have the QR code at each table. The place has a dark lighting with red seatings. Has more of the lounge from yesteryears than a restaurant. The service was ok. Nothing too bad but not friendly either. The chef/I'm assuming the owner was friendly and tried to get everyone hyped up and the mood fun and upbeat.The price isn't too high because almost everything was 40% off the menu price. This is gimmicky. It's not that it's a special promo or anything, it's just the real price. I would rather be told exactly what I'm paying rather than treating customers like idiots using a simpleton mind tricks. Just make a new menu. Now the food. We tried several rolls and nigiris. The fatty yellow tail was really good but not the sushi rice beneath the fish. The rice in our food was cold and on the hard side. Been here a couple of times before the pandemic to feast on the AYCE sushi menu. I don't like sushi so I only got the meets and vegetable/California roll, therefore I can't really comment on the quality/taste of sushi. This review will be based on everything else though. All the other stuff on the menu was good ie. teriyaki, chicken cutlet, gyoza, edamame, salad, etc... the service was good as well. It was too hard to flag a server down during busy times. It sucks though because they got rid of the ayce now and only offer a la carte, but it hey do offer 50% all of their rolls except for their bento boxes and other items I don't remember at the top of my head. All in all, not the best but everything has been pleasant and good every time I've been here. read more

I found this spot right before the whole COVID lockdown. Then they did togo only and I still came by, eventually they opened up for patio seating only and I was still there, and now they're open for both indoor and outdoor seating! The main reason I was attracted to this restaurant was their "50% OFF MENU" deal minus bentos and alcohol. Highly recommended rolls: Butterfly Roll - Strong garlic butter flavor Rainbow Roll - Taste the rainbow(variety) We used to come here almost twice a month. Sometimes even 3 times! I got the Baked Salmon roll multiple times prior to my last visit, and the rice has always came out warm and soft. This last time in October, the rice was hard and cold. It tasted very dry and old. Like imagine you refrigerated cooked rice for a couple days and then made sushi out of that. I don't know what happened, but I sent it back and asked for a new one. They brought out pretty much the same roll in the same condition but on a different colored plate now. I don't know if it's the same exact roll that I sent back, but it sure seemed like it. I brought it up and the server said they made a new roll for me. I just ate the salmon off the top instead. Service was really bad. They took forever to bring out the sushi. The manager had to come and apologize for the long wait and offered a pitcher a beer. What made it worst was that we sat in the corner, so the servers were not as tentative. Every time they came over to drop off food they felt the need to apologize. I felt they were really rushed, so they would forget a few items that we ordered. We came at 5 pm on a Saturday night to beat the crowd and the service was still pretty bad. It wasn't just our table, but the tables around us were also waiting a long time. As for the food, I think the quality was a little above average. The ratio of fish to rice was really good. That's definitely a plus for an AYCE restaurant. I probably wouldn't recommend going here because of the service. Last Monday night, I came to Hoshi Sushi in the Amerige Heights section of Fullerton. I've heard good things about this place, but I do have to base it on what I see. There's two menu option, AYCE or regular menu. I went for the regular menu. I ordered 2 different rolls, Crawfish roll and I forgot the name of the other one I ordered. When I got the food, I was hungry to eat. The presentation of the crawfish roll looks nice, but when I pickup the rolls with chopsticks, it was falling apart. Taste good, but not that great though, I had better rolls than this. The other rolls I got, it was alright. Didn't have much to say about it. Service here was an hit and miss, took a while for refill on my drink. And also, when I asked for the bill, it took too long that I asked again. Not cool with that. The sushi chef was the only thing that was good as far as service goes (give me the rolls at timely matter). Based on everything I've experienced, I was not pleased with it. Took quite some time to get our order in since our waitress wouldn't stop to check if we were ready. ***For the sashimi option, you need to pay an extra $5 a person. However, I wish they can cut down on the pepper/salt that they put on these nigiris. For the first round we got less rice however ordering more for our second round, they doubled on the rice.... -Salmon: Fresh and light. Same thing with the rice. They had a tiny bit for the first round then doubled up the rice ration on the second round. -Fresh Water Eel: My cousin enjoyed this but this wasn't my fave. I had a fish bone in mine and lost my appetite. -Surf Clam: I try this every time it's served & this has to be one of the best. The clam wasn't hard to chew like other places! So that's a plus! Rolls: -Rock & Roll (no rice roll): Mostly filled w/ imitation crab and barely any tuna, salmon and albacore... What's the point of adding the fish? -Shrimp Boat Roll (2 pieces): Not my favorite. Didn't even have shrimp in it. Just deep fried imitation crab. WTF -Burrito King Roll (2 pieces): Very light, but then again it was filled w/ imitation crab.. -Baked Crawfish/Scallop: Has to be one of the best baked rolls I've had! Was really excited to try this place. We just moved to Anaheim and this is the first sushi place we've decided to try. The food was good except for the Garlic Shrimp Ramen. I ordered Spicy Pork Ramen for my husband and the garlic shrimp ramen for my daughter. We got 2 spicy soup/broth for the noodles. There was no indication on the menu that the shrimp ramen is spicy so I think that they gave us the wrong one. My daughter wasn't able to eat her food. And I waited one hour for our order after they said that it was ready for pick up. I don't mind waiting for food but the thing is they said that the order was ready so I drove there to pick it up and have to wait another 40minutes for it. When I got there the guy and girl both said that they haven't pressed or clicked the ready button on their iPad yet. So I called yelp's customer support just to make sure. And they said that it was the restaurant who verified that the order was READY. It was just so disappointing for making me wait after verifying that our order is ready for pick up and having one of the food messed up and my daughter has to wait another 30min for me to cook food for her. One of the very good purpose of ordering online then pick it up is the CONVENIENCE of it specially if you just want to spend more time with your family during the weekend. Avoid this place at all cost! I ordered a bento box that's suppose to come with a house salad, soup, and rice. The 'house salad' was just a piece of lettuce placed for decor while they replaced the soup with two gyoza. Rice was extremely dry.The server couldn't even inform us about modifications to soup and salad on the bento box that was served with a plate... The two sides I ordered with my "bento box" were spicy crunch roll and gyoza. The mediocre tasting "crunch roll" was more like an imitation crab roll with tempura flakes. No tempura shrimp whatsoever. The worst crunch roll I've ever had. The flavor of the fish in the hooter roll was also overpowered by excessive cream cheese filling. Service here is also slow and terrible. They're highly disorganized, food took forever to arrive, and we had multiple servers. Don't be fooled by the 4 star reviews. While I'm not really itching to return anytime soon, I would likely come back if my friends wanted to eat here, and would recommend it to Americanized sushi lovers who like to eat a lot. It will satisfy. While it's perhaps best known for their ayce menu, it's not a requirement. Their normal rolls are priced around $13.99, however, so if you're thinking of getting more than one item, it probably makes the most sense to do the ayce priced around $26/person. One thing that's definitely worth noting is that they do not require everyone in your party to do ayce. That was a pleasant surprise, since my friend wasn't in the mood to chow down on mass, cheap sushi. He ordered udon, while I got my sushi fix. Overall, I thought the menu was on par with other ayce sushi restaurants around. The nigiri list includes all the regulars like tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and albacore, along with seared tuna, seared albacore, eel, and more. Not an extremely exotic list, but it has the basics. The fish quality was on par with most ayce restaurants, perhaps slightly better. I enjoyed the sushi rice here, which was nice and warm. The miso soup was very forgettable. Went to eat here on 4/7/18 for lunch, waited awhile to write my review because I was extremely fearful of getting food poisoning after reading the most recent reviews and after tasting the questionable quality fish here. We came here to eat after seeing the large number of glowing yelp reviews, so we were curious. Unfortunately, it wasn't until after we had placed our first round order that I started scrolling through the reviews and reading them that I realized we might be in for a dreadful meal. Came here on a Sunday around 1pm for lunch, the place was mostly empty. When asked about ownership, waitress scoffed and said management changed a long time ago. We ordered a bunch of rolls and nigiri for the 1st round - it took awhile to come even though there wasn't that many guests and there were numerous sushi chefs behind the counter. When it came, almost all of the rolls looked nothing like the photos and some items we ordered were missing. There were also items that definitely we did not order. We brushed it off and decided not to say anything about it, we could just order it the next round. I'm most concerned about the quality of fish here - some pieces definitely tasted very fishy and old/dried up. The texture and taste just tasted off. The salmon tasted very slimy in texture. The tuna was very dry, salty, and had a strong pungent fishy taste to it. I didn't try the other types of fish, because by then I was spooked by the previous reviews of food poisoning and the questionable tasting fish I had so far. I was a bit suspicious of the raw fish that was smothered in sauces as well. I felt like I had to keep eating since we were paying about $25 per person for the meal? I stuck with mostly cooked rolls after that round. sauces most of the time. They were good, but not amazing. Again, smothered in sauces. One major point to be made is that I ate SO MUCH IMITATION CRAB while I was there, it's in literally almost every roll in some amount. The hand rolls were not great either - friend ordered a salmon hand roll, when it came it was literally salmon pieces drenched in what looked like spicy sauce? A +1 was that the nigiri rolls here are great if only the raw fish had been better quality/freshness - each rolls only had a tiny bit of rice under each piece of fish, which is great since you won't be full up on rice too quickly. I feel like for the expensive price we paid for lunch, it's definitely not worth it for the quality and choice of rolls you get. Have heard people from Fullerton area say this place was good back in the day, but definitely things have changed with the recent new management.
