The food was pretty decent and portions were fair for the price nowadays. You get to pick 3 meats/sides with your rice. Comes with bitter melon soup on the side and their side of chili is actually spicy unlike most places. The plating...is really big and doesn't seem to be needed. It's most likely done that way since the orders are modular and it's easier on the cook when plating but it takes too much room on the table. My biggest gripe is how loud the inside is. Since the inside is built like a echo chamber with no pictures or items to soak up sound. Everyone talking becomes super loud and makes me never want to go inside because of this issue. The food is immaculate. I like how the rice is done. And the food is served quickly. The egg is always perfectly cooked and not too well done. They also just added Thai milk tea and regular milk tea to their menu as well! I highly recommend. There is music in the background as well, the style of music varies from day to day. I was here earlier this week. I had never tried broken rice before, and I was curious, as it seems to be a very popular vietnamese dish. I am extremely glad that I found Hot Com Tam for my inaugural experience. The place is very clean, very nicely decorated, and was playing cool vietnamese music in the background. The waiter was also very friendly, and I appreciated him taking the time to explain what the dish is and how it is ordered. Basically, it is a large scoop of broken rice in the middle of the plate with protein options on the plate around it and a ramaken of really good sauce that you pour over the whole thing. The whole experience was very fun and the food was delicious. I am looking forward to taking my family there on my next visit as I am sure they will enjoy it. I really want to like this place some it's close to home but really I couldn't... here's the break down.... Service: the kids working there were very nice.. really sweet... great service Food: portions were normal... I wouldn't say it's huge... I know other com tam places have bigger portion... hey give you 2 super thin pork chop if you get sườn nướng ... there's no complaints here in terms of portions. The chạo tôm was on the soft mushy side and that's not how it should be. The egg&meat cake was fair. Bì was just ok... not great... the main part was the meat... decent flavor, however it was not grilled... I think grilled meat should truly be grilled... it was fully cooked but a bit under grilled or not grilled so it doesn't smell good... it was just ok for me. Plating: Usually doesn't bother me but I don't think cơm tấm needs to be served in such plates... cơm tấm isn't a fancy item... in fact it's a "get your belly full" dish so I think they went a bit overboard with the "plating"... plus its not a fancy restaurants... no need for that. Also the bún thịt nướng... same things... it was swerved in a large pasta plate or like a giant American shallow soup bowl...again... not necessary... and it didn't feel good eating with it. Good portion and they give you some soup, though I wish that they put some little pieces of neck bones or spare ribs like Thuận Kiều. Soup is on a salty side but not too salty. Really wanted to support this local business but the food fell way short of my expectations. I love broken rice and normally I ordered only the steamed egg cake, julienned pork and skin and the tofu shrimp paste as I don't want to too much meat that would sit heavily in the stomach for hours. So the three items have always been satisfying at other com tam places. I didn't expect the portion to be so small when placed on my table. But this place, the steamed egg cake portion was puny about half a size of others. It was overly salty even without complimenting with fish sauce. As well as the Tau Fu Ky only a fraction of other places and it was noticeably darker, tough to chew. I suspected it had been refried from left overs. It was also very salty and dried. I ended up paying $19 tax and tip included and unsatisfied and still hungry. I went to THH afterwards and grabbed a sandwich to fulfill my tummy. The only thing Hot about Hot Com Tam was the broken rice. My soup was lukewarm and so is the egg cake. Take a look at the photos taken by Yun S and see for yourself how tiny the egg cake and dark Tau Fu Ky wedges are. My plate was exactly the same. We have been here multiple times, and it has been consistently a terrific experience. The restaurant is clean, and we are always seated immediately. They installed an electronic ordering system at each table since the last time we visited. Ordering is easy. The menu allows you to customize your dish without having to look through hundreds of menu options to find the right one. My favorite part is being able to order noodles or broken rice. My husband orders the four item broken rice, and I get the three item vermicelli noodles. The meats are tender and has a nice charred bbq flavor. They are also not stingy with the accompanying vegetables. Prices are reasonable, the food is delicious, and portions are filling. That's enough to bring me into a restaurant, but there's more. My husband is always happy to order a drink because they don't overcharge. They are also one of the few restaurants left to still serve hot tea for free, which use to be standard at every Vietnamese restaurant. I haven't seen drink prices like this since the early 2000s. I hate finding little charges snuck into my bill for water that was placed into a takeaway cup or tea that cost $5 because of the tiny cup of honey next to it. This seems like a small thing; however, it is one of the many examples of the owners wanting you to enjoy your food experience. The staff is pleasant and personable. They go out of their way to make you feel welcomed. We have a three year old picky eater. He sits to enjoy his entire meal here. Tonight we took my mom. She's the ultimate test. Well this place surprised me! The presentation is incredible especially for the price point. Newly remodeled and under new ownership, it looks incredible inside and out. The use of big screen TV's all around the inside showing Asian cooking and preparation around the world is so interesting.
