We try the baked sesame bread with egg, vegetarian cold noodles, salty fan tuan. The baked sesame bread was the best item. The eggs were super flavorful, fluffy and very scalliony. The bread was really flaky and thin - not at all heavy heavy or doughy. Super fresh and piping hot. The noodles and veggies were fresh but not very flavorful. We ordered both the sweet and salty soymilk, beef wrap, fan tuan (chinese rice roll), pork and leek dumplings, and you tiao. We brought our food home and digged in. The food taste like your traditional Chinese breakfast. It similar to breakfast at JJ bakery and other local asian brunch places in sgv. There aren't that many good Taiwanese breakfast spots in LA/OC and this is one of the more well known ones in the SGV. The shop used to have seating indoors however since the pandemic, this is now just a order at the door and take it to go type of place so just be aware there is no seating here. Dan Bing/ Egg Omelette - This is soft and fluffy and one of my favorites here. 4/5 Green Onion Pancake with Egg - This has the potential to be good but because it is togo, unless you eat it right away, the crispy pancake gets soggy very quickly - so I rate this 2/5 Pork Baos - these are delicious and full of meaty filling. I bought some frozen also to steam at home and they were great. 4/5 Soy Milk - I had this cold and this is sweetened. Enjoyed this and tasted like the ones in Taiwan. 4/5 read more

My friend and I were decided where to eat and we decided to try this place out! It was actually within walking distance from where we were at, but they do have a small parking lot in the front. I tried the fried Chinese donut (you tiao) and the savory soybean milk while my friend got the fan tuan with everything in it. The Chinese donut was super delicious, really nice and crispy! The savory soybean milk was also really delicious and paired well with the Chinese donut. I usually get the non-savory soy milk, but I'm glad I tried out the savory one! They both remind me of the breakfasts I had in Taiwan, so I felt super nostalgic eating them. It was my friend's first time eating a fan tuan and she really liked it! For those of you that haven't, I'm not entirely sure you should start with this place or you'll end up having high expectations. - soy milk - to the traditional taiwanese, this is the most important part of the meal. They have the cleanest, crispest, non grainy, version I've ever had 5/5 - taiwanese donut - my bf joked asking if this was possibly made through an air fryer since it seemed like there was very little oil. i guess anything's possible? One of the best and cleanest I've had 5/5 - egg pancake - extra thin layer of pancake almost like a crepe with lots of egg. you can tell they use super clean oil to make their food 5/5 - fan tuan - think of this as a Chinese burrito. Savory with the Taiwanese donut, eggs and pickled vegetables inside wrapped up in sticky rice (undercooked black rice was super tough, jaws got sore) 3/5 - radish cake - was just right 5/5 - pork meat ball - think of this as a savory mochi bun. There's pork, mushrooms, and bamboo in it wrapped by some sort of chewy mochi texture 5/5 They don't understand English very well here but you should be able to get by but I would recommend ordering in person if you can't speak chinese. I was a little hesitant to come here after reading some of the reviews, but Mom wanted soy milk and shaobing for breakfast. She had been unsuccessful ordering delivery from another restaurant and sent me here. I don't speak Chinese (don't let my face fool you) and was a little scared that I'd get treated rudely. I had no idea where it was but saw the crowd of people standing outside and figured that I had come to the right place. I placed my order in English and thankfully got no attitude for it. They were only doing takeout and they do not accept credit cards, so I had to dig through my purse to find cash. Considering that they don't issue numbers or take down your name, I was pretty surprised that the orders were being picked up seamlessly. I ordered a plain baked sesame bread ($2.25) and salty soy milk for my mom and a sesame bread with egg ($4.75) and one with pork ($4.25) for myself. The pork one was a little dry (I should have added pickles) but the one with egg was the perfect breakfast (and cheap by Westside standards). I'd come here again to check out more of the menu. Man, I can't believe I never knew about Huge Tree Pastry before until recently. This Taiwanese breakfast spot is so tasty, everything that we ordered was super delicious and good. First off since Covid is still a thing that is not allowing people inside their store but rather you can order in this door entrance what you would like. Plenty of options on the menu and I'm sure you will be able to find something! The green onion pancake is on point and you can also add an egg if you would like. The sesame beef wrap is super crispy. If you love tea eggs like I do and miss them from being in Asia don't fret they have a packet of 6 that you can bring home and enjoy. Keep it in the fridge and it can be eaten for up to three days. I like it as a small snack or in between meals when I am hungry. You can also make noodles or have it with a rice dish that you make at home. If you are a fan of pickles the Asian way you can also order that as a side and keep that in the fridge too! Overall I have become a fan and I think the line is worth it!! The flavor of the baos are still really nice but it seems as if there's less filling now and more bread. Love the fantuan here. I also love the size. It's a bit smaller than other places but I think that's whAt makes it perfect because I'm usually full by the time I'm three quarters through one. Definitely recommend adding the egg and veggies. I also got a large peanut drink and it was delicious and quite a large portion. It is thicker though so can be very filling. I came here just to try the infamous fan tuan (glutinous rice rolls), which is a popular Taiwanese breakfast. When I arrived, there was a continuous line of people ordering food from here. I ordered two Salty Fan Tuan with Egg, one with Sweet White Rice ($4.50) and Purple Jasmine Rice ($4.95). The lady taking the order seemed eager to quickly take the orders and I was glad my mom was able to help speak in Mandarin for me since there seems to be a language barrier. The fan tuan is a yummy on-the-go treat. It's filled with a Chinese donut, pork sung, and the optional addition of egg and/or pickled radish. I like that the donut gives a crunchy texture and the pork sung gave a chewy and salty flavor all wrapped in a bed of sticky rice. Although it's a nice blend of ingredients for a good, quick snack, it wasn't tasty enough to compensate for the high price tag. I was finally able to try the extremely popular and famous Huge Tree Pastry. I live a little further away so it is definitely a hike (relatively speaking) to get out here and I do like to sleep in so it's almost the tail end of what most people would consider breakfast time. This place has been highly recommended and my friends out in the mpk area have suggested me to try it out. As a reminder, it's cash only here. The past few visits, I got the purple rice sticky rice with egg and the sweet soy bean. Their soy milk was amazing and I love the huge cup that the large size comes in. I don't have to conservatively sip my drink to savor every drop. I have heard from some of my friends that sometimes it's hit or miss but this time I definitely got it when it was a hit. The breakfast items were fantastic and I can't wait to come back. It definitely lived up to the hype. Parking: The best place to park is in the lot right north of the plaza. The driveway is right after the huge Courtyard Marriott that looks like it's about to open. Since this was my first time here I parked on the other side so I had to walk across the supermarket. Scary take out packing. I ordered 3 big hot soy milk, 2 rice rolls and 4 燒餅夾蔥蛋. With previous experience of their terrible packing for take out, I brought my own carton box to hold the take out. She handed me with a tightly packed plastic bag with all the order inside. I carefully put them into the carton box and securely put in the car floor with my foot hold it in place. My husband was the driver. When I got home and opened it up, one of the hot soy milk plastic cover was twisted and opened due to the heat and tightness of the plastic bag on the top. The 燒餅夾蔥蛋 were socked with the soy milk, not to mention the bottom of the bag was floating with soy milk. The only thing that I was glad about was that I had the Caron box holding the mess. Busy spot for breakfast and I see why. The food is homey and made fresh, so a bit of a wait during peak hours is worth it. I've been here several times and my favorites are the Green Onion Pancake with egg and I found the oyster pancake to be good, with better oysters than the other Taiwanese spots in SG. Huge Tree Pastry is a local icon in Monterey Park and has been serving their Taiwanese breakfast foods for as long as I can recall. Whenever I'm in the area in the morning I seem to get the cravings for their famous Fan Tuans, which if you don't know, are sticky rice rolls filled with dried pork floss and a Chinese fried cruller. You also have the option for white or purple rice (go purple) and you can add an egg and/or preserved vegetables (do both). What you get in the end is the Taiwanese version of a breakfast burrito. It's a kaleidoscope of flavors, textures, and temperatures. Warm, cool, meaty, salty, sweet, sour, crunchy, soft....a melting pot of goodness. Since the dining room is still closed, the best place to eat it is in your car right after the very friendly young lady at the window hands it over. Carefully unwrap one end of the plastic wrap and let it sit for a minute. If you bite down right away it will be a bit too soft from the steam. Let it air out for a minute and all the intended textures will come to fruition. But don't wait beyond that otherwise it gets too cool. If you hit that golden timeframe you will be mesmerized by all that it has to offer. The only regret you'll have is not getting one more (so get two, you're welcome). read more

Huge Tree Pastry is still open during COVID! Remember CASH ONLY! They are my go to Taiwanese breakfast spot every time I'm in LA. It's almost an absolute must go to when ever I visit my parents. They have a small table at the door where they take orders. I called in my order and it was ready within 15 mins so no waiting needed when I got there. I went all out this time and ordered a little of everything since it's been so long and I've been craving Taiwanese breakfast. Here's a list of menu items: Pan Fried Turnip Cake w/optional egg (aka Luo Buo Gao) [5/5] - These are my go to order every time. I love turnip cakes and they make it the best of all the places I've gone too. It's the most authentic and similar to when I had Taiwanese breakfasts in Taiwan. I always add the egg which I love. It's just a thin layer of pan fried egg atop the turnip cake Pan fried egg pancake (aka Dan Bing) [5/5] - This is another staple of Taiwanese breakfast and a must get for me. It's a simple dish of pan fried eggs wrapped in a thin pancake. It's very much a "poor man's" dish but it's absolutely delicious and a comfort food for me. Fan Tuan [5/5] - This is an Taiwanese sticky rice burrito. It comes with either white or purple rice and option to add eggs and the pickled vegetables. It default comes with the Chinese fried donut inside and dried pork sung (shredded pork). The pickled veggies are a must. It really kicks the flavor up a notch with the pickle flavor that cuts through the carbs. Xiao Long Baos (Steamed soup dumplings) [4/5] - The do make decent XLBs, however with the competition of XLB places in SGV its hard to say theirs is the best. It's not bad though and we still do get this sometimes Sweet Peanut Tofu Soup (Tian Dou Hua) [5/5] - This is sometimes a desert but I like to order it as a breakfast item here because they do it really well. It can be either hot or cold. It's a sweet brown sugar syrup base with soft tofu and peanuts. Potstickers (Guo Tieh) [4/5] - We do order their potstickers often too. Again there are so many dumpling places in the SGV that it's hard to stay theirs is the best, but it's not bad over all. We do order it often. There's a really nice younger lady who works there who I believe is the daughter. I'm sad I never got her name but she always greets me and my family so warmly. I love her and miss her! Small Taiwanese breakfast spot near a Chinese supermarket on Atlantic Blvd. Parking can be tricky, especially if you come around noon when people are also out and about to do their grocery shopping. Interesting thing about this Taiwanese breakfast spot: they add egg to a lot of different traditional dishes. The wait can get long if you don't come early. Food: - purple rice fan tuan (purple sticky rice with Chinese donut and pork sung in the middle): pretty good. The purple rice has a different fragrant, almost taro-y. Pricier than the usual fan tuan but worth a try. - sesame bread with egg: it was okay. Filling, but I'm not crazy about the oily egg. I probably would've had the beef inside instead. - hot soy milk: comes unsweetened, but you can add sugar. I like mine lightly sweetened. Goes well with Chinese donut dipped in it. For the uninitiated, fan tuan is a classic Taiwanese breakfast staple where a fried Chinese donut is tucked into a sticky rice blanket along with pickled mustard greens, pork floss, and scrambled egg. It was my favorite choice of breakfast on weekends growing up. We also ordered some hot soy milk, radish cake, a red bean pastry, and a flaky sesame pastry. Our total was just over $20, super reasonable to me. The fan tuan was packed to the brim with goodies. I especially loved the addition of scrambled egg. We opted for purple rice which lent the roll a vibrant color. The sesame pastry was incredibly flaky. It's definitely meant to be dipped in the soy milk though--without it, it can be a tad dry. I opted for a red bean pastry for nostalgia's sake, but it is definitely something that's better served warm. I ended up taking it home for later. The best surprise was the radish cake.
