It's different than Chinese or Cantonese breakfast as I saw people giving lower stars as the wrong expectations. Just thinking it's a bit unfair to rate a bbq place when you expected to be a stake house. We gave this place a few more chances but their quality is getting worse. I got the purple rice fan tuan and baked sesame bread with egg and they were not good. The fan tuan wasn't soft and the youtiao tasted pretty bland and not crispy. I added pickles but they gave only a little. For the baked sesame bread with egg, it was mediocre as well and it made me indigestion afterwards (I won't order it again because this is the 2nd time). My go to order is the salty purple rice fan Tuan with eggs and pickles. Always delicious. I also like their pan fried dumplings and their soy milk. It's cash only. Currently right now, there's no indoor seating and it's only take out. They set up a counter at their door so that you just wait outside for your order. Google maps definitely didn't mention this spot was on the other side of the plaza but there is ample parking. This is a true mom and pop shop, nothing fancy and straight to the point. Look at what you want before coming up to the counter, order and pay cash. My 3 fan tuan came out in maybe just under 5 mins! I got 3 fan tuan with everything - purple rice, pickled vegetables and a fried egg. Theres also a Chinese fried donut inside. The side of your fantuan might vary but it's very filling and is great for on the go food. For those who don't like sticky rice, going with white rice would be a better option, also less heavy feeling. The store had their air conditioning on with additional fans so it's also a great place to have a quick breakfast. Came here to pick up breakfast to go for my family on a Saturday morning around 11 am. It wasn't super crowded when we arrived, with a handful of folks waiting for their order. We ordered the baked sesame bread with beef and pork as well as as vegetarian fantuan and salty fantuan ($6.25 each with purple rice and eggs). We also got a large hot sweet soybean tofu ($4.95). The lady taking our order spoke very fast and spoke kinda rudely to my mom when she was ordering. I didn't like her attitude. We got our food in 10 minutes or so, which wasn't bad. We didn't eat the food until the next day when we took it on a hike for lunch, but I was very underwhelmed by the fantuan. The rice and youtiao tasted pretty bland; I could barely taste any salt in it. The only flavor came from the sweet and savory pork floss, and I don't even like pork floss that much... My parents had the sesame breads and both were just okay as well, nothing to write home about. The tofu pudding was okay but the syrup wasn't sweet enough. I know everyone has different preferences for sweet levels, but I wish they had given us some sweeter syrup on the side. One more thing I noticed as I'm writing this review... the lady taking our order charged us prices different from what's listed on the menu. One item was overcharged and one was undercharged. Always a hit and miss with this place. Love the Taiwanese breakfast here, but I'm here at 2:00pm, they closed already. Time said they are open until 3pm. One time I came at 12 and they are closed too. I suggest you call them before you stop by. But.. sometimes even if they are there they don't answer the phone. They are also not very lenient. I know it's a small business but they nickel and dime you for everything, even an extra cup or napkins. Everything here is good from the what I call the rice burritos lol to long fried "Oil Tails" to the soybean drinks this place has it all. Came after seeing this on an Instagram feed. The place is to go cash only. I ordered a large hot sweet soy milk, a curry pastry, and a rice roll. The service was not good. The older man that came to take the order was rude and we could hardly hear him. He kept barking at us to order and once we did he just walked away. When we got the food, the soy milk wasn't sweet at all, the curry pastry was ok but was cold, the only thing good was the rice roll only once you get to the part that has the pickles. Some things have changed (there's no longer a dine in option), but the food is the same! They also now have a purple rice version which seems *healthier* since the rice is multigrain over white. The you tiao (donut) isn't too oily and the size is just right and will fill you up for most of the day. Service has always been quick and friendly by SGV standards and you still see a lot of OG aunties and uncles lining up throughout the day and early in the morning which a hallmark of good quality asian food in my book. My cousins and I came here to pick up a quick breakfast before heading home and honestly this is a really solid entry into Taiwanese breakfast food. We got the salty fan tuan with purple rice with eggs and pickles and pork and Napa dumplings. Purple Rice Fan Tuan- this was my favorite item that I had tried because you honestly can't go wrong with anything stuffed. This was purple rice stuffed with pork floss, pickles, eggs, and a very crispy Taiwanese donut. The donut was by far the best surprise that I had in there. Crispy and added a contrasting texture to the overall soft fan tuan. The pork floss added a sweet, yet savory flavor to the fan tuan and the pickles added a nice tart, yet subtle crunch to the fan tuan as well. The egg was an extremely nice touch. You can add an egg to anything and it would never miss. Pork and napa dumplings- these were absolutely delicious. I swear I could've eaten another 50 if given the chance. As soon as I bit into a dumpling just completely juicy pork flavor gushed into my mouth like a waterfall, my eyes almost widened more than usual because the flavor was so bomb. I usually eat dumplings with sauce but these did not need sauce at all. Sauce would have actually deterred the original flavor of the dumpling. This place is a 3.5 stars for me. The food is fine, but the portions are small for what you get compared to other Taiwanese breakfast place. I got the salty fan tuan and the youtiao in it was a bit more on the slightly burnt side and hard. The salty soy milk was good though. Sure, this place is cash only but whatever. Go get cash. And I think the prices are not too expensive. You have to pay $15 for a sandwich in LA. I think $6 for a fantuan is a STEAL. Huge Tree is hugely great! It's a classic hole-in-the-wall place that has delicious, affordable food. They are cash only, so be sure to have enough cash on hand for what you want to order. Our favorite items from Huge Tree are also the things that made them a must-stop place on road trips: their Salty Fan Tuan (with eggs and pickles) and their Hot Sweet Soybean Milk. Fan tuan is one of my favorite Chinese breakfast dishes in general, and Huge Tree's fan tuan is the best I've had in the US. The you tiao inside the fan tuan retained enough crisp that we could tell it was fried well, and it had a beautiful chew that worked great in the roll. We tried their fan tuan with purple rice, which was worth the upcharge from the standard white. Purple rice has a slightly heartier flavor and texture than white rice, and both its flavor and texture made the fan tuan all the more delicious. Plus, the rice was just sticky enough to hold the roll together. The eggs and pickles were the figurative cherries on top, giving different flavor and texture experiences that made each bite exciting. As an added bonus, the fan tuan is perfectly shaped and sized to eat in the car! Similar to the fan tuan, their soy milk is the best that I've had in the US. It was creamy and earthy in all the ways that fresh soy milk should be, and it had the perfect level of sweetness: not too much, but enough to make it a tasty balance to their savory food. The only potential downside of their soy milk is the temperature: When they say hot, they mean it! It comes out scalding, but while you have to exercise caution with your first few sips, the temperature makes you slow down and really appreciate the drink. We also tried their Beef Roll (牛肉捲餅 / niu rou juan bing), which was pretty tasty. The beef was well-seasoned and the cong you bing wrapper was cruncy and flaky. But, though it was objectively delicious, it didn't blow us away like the fan tuan and soy milk did. read more

I had been a fan of this business for years, and I came here regularly, but it definitely goes to say that all good things eventually come to an end. The pandemic destroyed what this business used to be, and I'll be surprised if it doesn't close for good within the year. At a table inside the restaurant, with his back turned, was an older Chinese man. Unbothered. I said "Hello?"... nothing for about three minutes. He then stood up slowly and walked over (actually looking bothered at this point) to take my order. Being Chinese, I've come to accept that service is usually going to be shit at most places, but over the years, I've come to find a lot of restaurants that have so much warmth and heart, and I have been less open to accepting poor service and bad attitudes. They were building a cell tower in the parking lot, so I asked the gentleman to repeat himself. He was clearly irritated at that point and said "white or purple rice?"; to which I replied "purple, please." He took my money and it eventually came out. I ordered a pork chop rice, a salty fan tuan with eggs and pickles, and a sweet soy milk cold. The pork chop rice was rubbish. The rice was soggy and overcooked. It was almost the texture of a turnip cake. The pork was thin, overcooked (or fried previously and then fried again until it was the consistency of jerky), and horrible. The fan tuan, which I was most excited about, had a you tiao (Chinese doughnut) inside of it which was hard and stale. I thought I may have been too critical, but then I opened it up and took a picture. The damned thing was dark brown and dry and stale. Was this made within the past two days and potentially dug out of the trash can? See the pictures and tell me that I'm wrong. The soy milk also didn't taste fresh. It was lightly sweetened, but I've had better canned soy milk than this. It used to be so much better. There also used to be a very kind and friendly woman who took orders and was super nice about everything. This place has gone to shit and I'll never be back. Really wanted to come here after seeing it being advertised by foodwithsoy. It was my first time trying fantuan. I got the purple rice wrap with Chinese donut, pickles, and eggs. It was a little bland but there was soy sauce to dip it with. I love the chewy texture from the purple rice! I also got the egg omelet which had this crepe outer layer and savory eggs inside. Recommend the hot sweet soy milk too, the small size was more than enough and the sweetness was perfect because it was not overwhelmingly sweet.
