After reading the the owner of this place use to own the Mobile station up the street when it sold delicious burritos, we had to make a stop to check it out. Unfortunately, it was really disappointing. I should have known when the place was deserted, we thought it was closed. We got the chicken burrito and two tamales and they were pretty bad. The chicken burrito just had really dried chicken, refried beans and a a ton of cheddar cheese. No rice or regular beans. The pork tamales we ordered weren't wrapped in corn husks and the both the masa and the meat were really super dry and hard. The two guys working at the place were nice enough but felt sorry for them. When we were driving back home, it was still empty as we drove by. Stopped in at Hugos again on this trip to the Sierras for the same reason as last year! We'd past a lot of closed eateries and several permanently shuttered food places in Lone Pine, Independence, and Big Pine, and we were hungry. At first I was disappointed, as the order taker at Hugo's told me that Hugo's BBQ was completely out of BBQ. What? Still being hungry and working on getting hangry, I went for the chili verde burrito and my guest went for a breakfast burrito. Both burritos were huge and very good. The pork was juicy and perfectly seasoned. And the sauce on the side....it was simply AMAZING. The sauce is a thin sauce with junky vegetables swimming about. While the burrito was very good, putting on the sauce made it all AMAZING! I'm planning to eat the other half of the burrito for dinner. My guest reported that the breakfast burrito with bacon, eggs, potatoes, cheese, and more was outstanding too. So while I was bummed to not get a BBQ pulled pork sandwich plate, the chili verde burrito more than redeemed Hugo's. read more

Having gotten used to seeing large crowds in front and seeing not may if at all, we slammed on the brakes and my wife went to order some pulled pork sandwiches. I went across the street to the park to wait. She came back with some pretty darn average plates. One has lettuce and no dressing and the meat was not apparently smoked. From the park I looked back and could only see the sign "BBQ" on a banner. Looking left a few places north I saw a new location for Copper Top but closed on a Saturday at noon. Holy Smokes in Bishop is good but a PITA to get into. Not going to make that mistake again. read more

Excellent place to grab good grub! My husband got the beef rib plate and I got the pulled pork chile verde burrito. Both were excellent. We are very picky about our bbq meat because we smoke our own and find it hard to find good bbq but this place nailed it and is a great stop on the way back home from Bishop. I definitely recommend it! Side note: This place is run by a local family and their personal touch adds to its charm. The best part about this place is the burritos, but they are hit and miss. The rest of the food is 'meh' at best. The BBQ's in the front are not used, so that's all "smoke and mirrors." Seems like they tried to take some of the glory from the former BBQ joint, but failed. The outdoor space (which is your only option for eating there) is often dirty, lawn has turned to weeds, and the back area looks like a junk yard. read more

Food was okay, but they have their old menu prices up instead of the "new inflation prices" that's what they told us and had us pay until the food was finished to charge us these supposed prices. 61 dollars turned into 75 dollars before they even told us about these prices. Straight ripping people off if they do that all the time. Bathrooms were not functional when we ate here. My family ordered three plates of ribs and they told us the plate contained 3 ribs. They gave them plates with all of them only containing 2 ribs and for 17 bucks? The carne asada burritos barely had any asada. Pure beans and rice. All this food gets microwaved too. Hell no. Travelers be cautious and eat elsewhere. Only good thing about this place are the basic drinks.. Worst place ever. read more

Driving through on the way toBishop, we saw the "Breakfast Burrito" sign and literally turned around to stop for breakfast. And we were really glad we did. My husband loves good chorizo and ordered the Chorizo, potato, and egg burrito. He said it was some of the best chorizo he's had in a really long time. I ordered the Carne Asada burrito. Hard to believe all these 5* ratings. May be true for the bkfast burritos or mexican dinner entrees (which we didn't try) but certainly not for the bbq. BBQ was ok and satisfied our hunger and copper top was closed so no huge disappointment. Portions were ample and price was very economical. Wife got the pork ribs-she thought they were good and no complaints. We both thought the slaw was way too runny but I used some to help with the dry nature of the pulled pork. Pulled pork sando had a fresh bun, plenty of meat and extra sauce. Unfortunately the meat and/or sauce was way too salty for my taste. Also meat was very dry---perhaps if the meat were tossed with the sauce and then put on the bun rather than just putting the sauce on top of the meat, the sandwich would have been less dry. Potato salad was fine-not too much mayo. Overall much better than "fast food" and price was right but there is better bbq in the area. read more

Pass on Hugo's and go to the real Copper Top BBQ. We read Copper Top had the best small town BBQ in CA. Garmin GPS unfortunately took us to Hugo's. The Hugo attendant (they apparently share uniforms with Shell Gasoline) said Hugo's bought Copper Top, so we were hopeful. Pulled pork was uninspiring. It had light smoke flavor and was dry. Ignore those negative reviews that seem to be coming from one unhappy group- Hugo's is a great, friendly spot for a meal in Big Pine. My pulled Birria sandwich was delicious. I opted for the BBQ plate and enjoyed excellent sides of beans and potato salad, too. The order came out fast and had everything needed for a takeout meal, including lots of salsa for the burrito. I often get the breakfast burrito, but I have also picked up the chicken tacos and pulled pork sandwich for dinner and they are delicious as well. WARNING Copper Top was closed... Decided to give this place a try... Don't. Just don't. I got two things, the pulled pork sandwich plate and the burria taco plate. Let me start with the pulled pork sandwich plate. First of all the pulled pork was so dry it literally was like eating dust. Came with two sloppy sides the beans which looked like diarrhea and were cold and potato salad which tasted like cement. Next was the burria taco plate. These were not burria tacos they were literally just tacos not to mention the tortillas were soggy and the meat just fell right through. If that wasn't enough the taste... I would rather eat my own ass. O and the sides, just like the other plate two sloppy sides, beans with over cooked rice. My palate has never experienced such disappointment. Abysmal. Stopped at this humble establishment very hungry after a long day on the slopes. Ordered the chicken plate, which was supposed to include potato salad and beans. What i got was a lukewarm piece of a rotisserie chicken covered in generic bbq sauce along with burnt rice and refried bean slop. The meal resembled the slop that was served by jack black to the niños in nacho libre. Doubt that this place would pass any legitimate food safety inspection. On a side note, the surrounding dining area is not well kept and the owner's chihuahua is running astray in the parking lot, barking at patrons. But, we had the ribs, potato salad, and beans. The bbq sauce is definitely homemade. It was super unique in flavor but so tasty. Their Mexican food looked delish also. It was true. This place was NOT good. Checked it out on our way to Mammoth. Since Mexican ladies were running the place, thought we should try the Mexican food. We ordered the BIrria Taco, Machaca Burrito, and Tamales. The taco was a bit pricey ($3.99) but there was sufficient amount of meat. It was just ok. Three stars. The burrito was bland. The filling, especially the meat, could of spend a lot more time on the grill. It needed seasoning. Two stars. The tamale was terrible. A weird Masa. Too ground up perhaps? The pork filling was super dry. Extremely light on the chili sauce. Absolutely the worse tamale I have ever had. So dry I couldn't finish it. I bought a "tri tip" sandwich that tasted like boiled low quality meat with some generic BBQ sauce poured all of over it.
