This place is a hidden gem. My family and I just so happened to be in the area. We saw the yellow signage and decided to pop in. The restaurant is located in a small strip mall and has plenty of parking out front as well as in and outdoor seating. We immediately found the space to be inviting and have a local feel to it. The staff was very friendly and eager to provide the best level of service. The crowd ranged from families, lone artsy looking diners and couples. Perfect for groups or if you're looking to dine alone. The restaurant boasts a menu that is sourced from local farmers markets and I could truly taste the difference. The ingredients tasted fresh and the food was made to order. I also enjoyed the fresh squeezed juices along with my meal. I love it when I can find tasty, simple flavors that are executed well and not greasy. The prices are pretty good you. We were out househunting on a Saturday afternoon and decided to find a restaurant in the neighborhood. We stumbled across the Humble Bee. We were seated immediately at communal table, which is never my ideal seating arrangement but it worked out fine. Being a Saturday afternoon, the restaurant was pretty busy. The noise levels a little high, but it's not fine dining, it's more of a casual atmosphere, so it was OK. Our service was fairly friendly and the meals we chose were both good. I went with the omelet and my partner had the eggs Benedict. I specifically asked if the potatoes had onions in them and was told no, but apparently the omelette comes with onions in it and I missed seeing that on the menu. It would have been nice if the server had caught that for me, but I will take responsibility for not seeing that. The only thing that kind of gave me the creeps was that the tables are very sticky. I don't know if it's the finish on the table itself or the cleaning product that they use to wipe it down, but it's unappealing. If we were in the area, we would return to the Humble Bee. read more

The service was great as one would expect and the staff was friendly despite it being fairly slow for a Monday morning. Parking is a bit tough to deal with, even though they have spots out front, you'd have to compete with other customers who are there for the nearby businesses as well as the restaurant is in a mini strip plaza. And the spaces out front are very tight. There are more spaces in the back from what we were told. Might be best to find street parking if you want to get in and out of your vehicle normally. The food was at best, okay. With the amount of ingredients listed, I felt that it could be something that I'd be able to cook from home. My cousin had The English Butty and I had the Frittata. The rosemary bread on the butty was good, and I liked the pairing of sweet potatoes with the arugula, beets, and goat cheese on the frittata. I had a matcha latte with lavender and I kind of wished they had spruced up the look of the drink considering how farm to table they advertise their food to be. IF YOU'RE NOT CAUCASIAN, YOU NEED TO READ THIS REVIEW I was miserably disappointed. This is a long review, but if you're not Caucasian, you need to read it. I brought my mom to have lunch at the Humble Bee in Lake Balboa, on Saticoy. We parked and saw the sign that said OPEN. We walked and were finding a table, when suddenly the girl that was at the register said "I'm sorry but we're closed. It's 2pm." I said thank you, and we walked toward the door. My mom and I were heading to my car only a few steps away, when I noticed to Caucasian ladies walking into the same restaurant. My mom and I are Hispanic. Something told me I should see if the Caucasian ladies would also be told the restaurant was closed or got service. Sure enough, they were seated and given a menu. About 30 seconds after the Caucasian ladies arrived, an African American older lady with a teenager arrived and were turned away, because the restaurant was closed. I got a little upset after seeing this and decided to at least let the restaurant know that this was not cool at all. I walked in and said to the girl at the register that she had said to me and to the black folks that the restaurant was closed, yet her door sign remained lit and said open, and on top of that, they did accept the Caucasian ladies who walked in right in the time between us and the black folks. At that moment, the owner of the restaurant (Caucasian lady) said it's alright, let us all in. So, the girl at the register said... ok, you're welcome to stay. And she ran after the black folks, who were already outside the restaurant... leaving, to let them know they could stay too. The folks went back in to have lunch there. I decided my mom and I wouldn't be staying there to have anything, because their behavior felt discriminatory. It was very clear that if the restaurant wasn't open or serving anymore, the sign should have been turned off, which I did mention to the restaurant. The first thing you need to do is turn off the OPEN sign. Second, they clearly felt comfortable telling us and the black folks that the place was closed, but they did give a table to the two Caucasian ladies who walked in between us and the black folks. And third, it wasn't until the owner saw me complaining at the register that she decided to tell the girl to let us in and serve us. Needless to say, I was deeply disappointed, because my house is only a few blocks away, and this was a place I had visited once before and wanted to continue visiting, since it's in my neighborhood. Am I upset? I'm really not. But it did bother me that in our times and with all the racial and political turbulence within our society, we have business owners who still intentionally do these things. I don't want to tell anyone what to do, but I do wish I had read this review before going there. I would have saved myself a moment of discrimination that felt very wrong given the location and the times we live in. Do I recommend this restaurant? No, I don't. I would never want anyone else who is not white to feel how I felt. read more

My boyfriend and I finally tried this place out and were excited to go. We went in on a Sunday and expected a wait, which was about 20 min or so. We were sat at an extended table, with a family of three sat on the opposite end. We placed our order and waited longer than anticipated, as the server told us right before our food came they were short on kitchen staff. We did not mind the wait, but were confused as to why the english butty dish came much later than the panwich and the pancakes, as we ordered the pancakes as our side. The food was good, but we were not amazed by the taste. Especially as we were mid meal, we noticed a young child on the opposite side of the table was coughing excessively to the point it sounded like he would throw up. Although there was a slight distance between us and them, it was making our dining experience awkward knowing this was occurring fairly close. We know the kids coughing was out of staffs control, but to have them at the same table definitely left a weird taste mid-meal. I ordered the eggs over easy, and they came with apple smoked sausage, in between two slices of buttery biscuit. The breakfast potatoes and salad were the perfect complement. This plate is my favorite thus far, it was delicious and the quality shows. The second time I came here, I got the panwich. This plate consists of a large pancake sandwiching eggs and apple smoked sausage patty. The panwich is topped with diced apple pieces, and cream. The panwich was ok, I tried it on the whim, but I prefer the eggs benedict more. The customer service was great, both times the wait staff took care of me well. My dads steak on the other hand was terrible. A wagyu steak. The waitress didn't ask what temperature he wanted it at. And when it came out it was really raw. They were able to put it back on the grill and it came back tough as boots. If we wanted a new steak we'd have to pay for a whole new one. No thanks. The coffee was good though. We went in on a Saturday morning and they have a brunch menu at that time. Not only are the dishes overpriced in my opinion but they also don't allow any modifications/substitutions. Considering how much they charge I would hope to get exactly what I would like. The food is also very hipster-ish. Not traditional at all. The space has a nice rustic feel to it and it looks like they have regulars that come in every week (overheard the waitress saying she'd see an older couple next week as they were leaving). I think they might've moved locations from before I'm not sure though. 2 of my friends ordered the eggs Benedict and I got the English butty. I think the menu changes up a bit every weekend. It's a nice clean restaurant inside. The waitstaff was friendly and the wait for our food took about 20-25 mins which wasn't too bad considering how packed it was inside on Saturday morning.
