Local Take: It could be that I ordered the wrong stuff, at the wrong time, with the wrong band playing, in the wrong Universe...but I did not enjoy myself. It was a nice afternoon and the menu looked promising. I figured I would play it "safe" and get a standard fried Calamari & a Chicken Sandwich...plus a citrusy beer. The Calamari were of good quality, fairly tasty with Tartar sauce, but was a small portion with excess oil....so OK for bar food. The Chicken Sandwich was recommended over the Banh Mi, and was said to be a "fried chicken thigh". When you like the bun the most, out of the whole sandwich, that is a problem. I have no idea what kind of sauce it was when I bit into it, but it was nothing like I ever had before...anywhere in the known Universe. It was sour, spicey, & kind of alien to my taste. To say I did not like it would be an understatement. I have no idea why I ate the whole thing except to say, "well I paid for it, and darn it, I do not want to waste food"...kind of thing. Later, after I left, I had to get a large chocolate covered Chilly Cone from down on Grande Ave. to somehow negate the weird residual heat & taste. Unfortunately, the beer that I picked oddly seemed to enhance the sour taste. I do have experience with sour beers, such as Lambic or others, but the sours that I had here were not ones that I care for. As some others have mentioned, you do not get alot for the money. The Calamari came with some sauce & lemon. The Sandwich came with itself. With a smallish beer, the tab ran quite high, for just me. Even accounting for the "COVID effect", it was pricey for what amounts to bar food. Sadly, there are other places in SLO county that also serve similar fare. In addition, there was no paper receipt offered, the bill needed to be paid on what looked like a iPhone app. It felt rushed & rather awkward & in the glare of the sun, small font, it was really hard to see. While I knew of this place for quite awhile, this was the first time I passed by while I was hungry & there was a spot right next door to this place. Initially it looked quite inviting and they had live music. They had limited comfortable seating [metal chairs were out due to my Neuropathy], so I had to sit right next to the band, in the glare of the hot sun. While it was not the fault of this place, I really did not care for the band, who could not carry a tune. It was as bad or worse, than some of the Karaoke, that I used to have to tolerate in Hawaii, when I lived there. Even worse, some also off tune customers decided to sing along. While I did tip the band, I think I would have tipped more to have just instrumental music...or just quiet. They did say, " Please tip if you like the music & please tip is you do not like the music"....so I did. There was also the questionable choice of them making a tall tale of going to a local Martial Art Studio...which they somehow morphed into the "Kung Fu Fighting Song". After that, they made some cracks about how maybe they served Chinese Food here. Since my relatives are Asian, and one of the local Asian families that I know of had experienced some local hate several months back, I do not care for cheap jokes that play into stereotypes. I did enjoy the outside dinning and the service was friendly and did wear masks at all times. The inside patrons did not seem to trouble with masks even when moving about & social distancing was questionable. Other than that, it was definitely not worth my time nor money to dine here. I do enjoy supporting local businesses and really miss the former "Comfort Market" here. Apparently, this place has lots of fans, and I am glad that they enjoy it. Except for a few places, I find that AG Village restaurants in general can be rather iffy when it comes to eats that I like. It is hard to tell whether it is a tourist and/or local effect. In the future, I will stick with my favs here, like AG Butcher Shop, AG Farmers Market, & Eclair [AKA Mule]. Well, I can say, it was a Weird Humdinger of an experience that I wished would end as soon as possible. You know things are bad when you start wondering about the probability of having a huge truck run you over in a park-let in AG...or for getting spontaneous transient bilateral deafness. Sometimes you just have to laugh.. Ha Ha.. Kung Fu Fighting... Ha Ha Ha After reviewing my pic of the menu: Apparently, I did not understand that it was a very spicy sandwich, since I thought "Hot" meant hot temperature, and I had never heard of Nashville Sauce. Silly me. I would recommend that they put a handy spicey icon next to the food items. While I do like a bit of heat from fresh peppers in a Bahn Mi...apparently I cannot stand "Nashville Hot Sauce"....which should be specified...since AG is not Nashville. It would help that the waitresses would elaborate, especially when specifically asked about the Sandwich. read more

My wife and I really enjoyed this brewery. We were warmly welcomed. There is plenty of seating inside and out. Bright and open space. Not too noisy. High open wood ceiling. Beautiful modern woodwork and lighting at the main bar "dispensing" beer tap manifold area. Some unique colorful artwork on the back wall. So OK the people and place is very nice and that's super, but what can you tell me about the beer? They offer a nice variety of 12 beers. I went for the red ale and my wife had a pilsner. Both beers were way above average. Really good beer. The servers bring each patron s nice cold glass of water too. ... nice touch! My first impressions below: Ambiance: I will judge ambiance since that is the first thing I experienced. Immediately I felt like the place was very cramped inside. The place was busy which is a good sign. They have large digital display for all the beer selections. I did not try the brews so I cannot judge them. I did a take-out order. If I would have dined inn, I would have of felt uncomfortable. Service: The hostess was friendly and promptly prepared my order. Good customer service. Food: I called my order inn. There were couple of items on the online menu that they do not serve anymore. It would be great if those items were taken off menu. Or put some type of indicator on menu stating that you do not serve this item. I ordered a French dip-ish sandwich. Which is not even listed on any of the menus on yelp or website. It was tribally mentioned to me during my ordering. The cost of the sandwich was approximately $17.00. Bread was fresh, meat was decent but need some seasoning. The consume (au jus) sauce was ok. The sand which needed some TLC. I was expecting a side of fries for value I payed. Now if I wanted fries, I would have to pay an additional $8.00 dollars for a side of fries. "No Bueno" in my book. So I went through the drive-through at Jack In Box and ordered a medium french fry for $3.69. In closing, would I go back? Not for the food but to try the brews. That's my 2 cents. read more

We ordered a couple of rounds at the bar and a snack went to touch base with another group of people for 8-10 mins, and the bartender said she needed to close us out for more customers when we returned Very unfortunate. Came across this place after having some Ice cream next door. Pretty good food. We ordered the Bahn Mi, Chicharrones, Fried Calamari, nachos. Everything was ok but surprisingly our favorite was the chicharrones. It had honey, a green creamy sauce, with some tomato...so good! We also got a flight of beer. Roast Coaster imperial porter was not bad, but was a little thin and not quite hopoy enough (and I'm not even a big hops fan.) The fish and chips were pretty good... their potato dippers (fries) here are an interesting halfway point between thick cut fries and potato skins (they arr basically potato "scoops" which makes them havr a good balance of crisp and starchy. Quite unique and good.) Food was better than beer. It would be nice if you could taste their beers in smaller sizes than a full pint. read more

The price tag is not low but the food was excellent and the server was really kind and helpful. The place was lit super bright during the day (I'd prefer it a bit darker but not everyone would) and the artwork painted on the walls was beautiful. I'd like it even more if they had non-alcoholic kombucha but I usually can't have everything in just one place! The chicken wings were really yummy. It's one of my favorite places on the Central Coast right now. Not only do they have an excellent beer, but the food is just as amazing. The owners and staff are always friendly and attentive. They have beers ranging from hard seltzers to stouts. They have amazing food specials that they come up with every now and then. Their lunch special is awesome. You can choose a beer and 1 of the 3 items from their lunch specials all for $20. A great Friday/Week end treat. My daughter and I came in for an appetizer dinner and omg it was so good! The food was very fresh. We had a Ceaser salad which was crisp, nachos were flavorful, and the wings were perfectly cooked. If I say I ate the most incredible hands down delectable hot dog that has ever been prepared by human hands, I jest I am barely exaggerating. I ordered the lunch special (which you had a choice of a hot chicken sandwich, burger, hot dog or mushroom tacos) which also came with "dipping potatoes" and a beer or beverage. Ummm getting the beer duh. Let me back track to the "dipping potatoes". Holy crap! If a homemade fry and potato chip had a baby it would be their dipping potato - which was cooked to absolute perfection! AMAZING!!!! The hubs got the Beer Battered fried fish tacos and was more than pleased - he gave it a 9.8 out of 10 (and the man would not stop eating my "dipping potatoes" whilst chasing it with their IPA Fog Crusher. The teen got the foodiest of the meals - she got the Birra Grilled Cheese accompanied by their home brewed root beer. YUM YUM Yuuuuuuum!!!! Oh!!! I almost forgot! We started the meal off with the BEST warm, fluffy pretzel with the warmest tastiest cheese for dipping! Pure heaven in beautiful Arroyo Grande. One month later... Came back today and it was just as perfect as the first time. Max aka the BEST server evvver (we had him the first time too and now he's like family a especially since he earned his Angel wings dealing with my impatient beer thirsty father!!!) Any who I did not venture from the perfection that was last times menu the AG Hotdog with the dipping potatoes and a beer. Why fix what's not broken??? After dropping my daughter off at Cal Poly for her freshman year, a chance encounter with some locals in Pismo Beach sent me to Humdinger Brewery in Arroyo Grande. These charming ladies were friends with the staff and raved about the food, craft beer and (surprisingly) the hard seltzers. I had dinner plans down south in Santa Maria that night but based on their strong review decided to stop in for a night cap at this absolute local gem. Just minutes off the 101, Humdinger is located on a quaint tree lined street in what must be AG's old town. Of all the places I visited during the trip, this has the most COVID friendly layout by a mile. Great temporary sidewalk seating, a nice collection of the tables on the regular porch and a long line of bar seats along a rail facing out towards the street. It was Saturday night and busy with a mix of families, friends and a few dates at the surrounding tables. The staff member who seated me is married to the brew master and was super friendly discussing the beers and seltzers on tap that evening. I started with the Fog Crusher, a wryly named New England style hazy IPA that seems to be the rage this summer across the craft brew landscape. I generally enjoy these refreshing beers but given the mild hopping used few stand out from pack. Humdinger's Fog Crusher was a notable exception. A burst of juice up front with a satisfying finish and no cloying after taste which rivals that of "Son of Juice" by Maplewood, my clear favorite back in Chicago. I could have spent an evening with this beer, but I had a long day and wanted to try a second brew before heading to the hotel. Enter Best Western IPA! I remember a few years ago when West Coast IPA's like Green Flash or Stone were the rage for a short time in Chicago. I always found the hopping a bit sour and cloying, but when in Rome...why not? I was rewarded with a clean, bright and flavorful version of this style which doesn't need to rely on juice additives to deliver a citrusy punch. My only disappointment was that I arrived late into my evening and with no appetite. From my perch overlooking the patio and sidewalk, I tried to match the plates of interesting southwest leaning "gastro pub" food with the menu as they arrived at the tables of the eager diners. For appetizers, chicharrónes, elote and gourmet flavored wings were popular, as were the Flattop Smash Burger and a Nashville Chicken sandwich for mains along with a range of attractively plated tacos and salads. So, I was really happy that I came to visit Humdinger but very sad to say that I can't vouch for any of the amazing plates that zoomed by me. This is a great spot to drink some great beer. You have the option to sit outside or inside which they have a roll up door so you are always getting fresh air. We've tried a few of their beers and a hard seltzer. Beers were smooth, the seltzer was great! The seltzer I had was a little pineapple with a hint of coconut. Delicious on a warm day. We haven't had the food yet, but it does look good. We will have to plan ahead and come hungry next time. This place will always be part of our line up of go to beer spots. read more

We have been anticipating and anxiously awaiting the opening of Humdinger and folks, it didn't disappoint! Great brews, friendly staff, quite the versatile menu for a new boutique brewery, and loved meeting the owners--passionate about brewing and so many perfect touches in the space that formerly held Comfort Market. This is a whole new, wonderful comfort with our own brewery right in the charming village of Arroyo Grande. We enjoyed the crisp, clean pils but their Roast Coaster Porter stole the show-perfect caramel but not too sweet! Notes of coffee but done to perfection. Of course we will return to sample more of their creations-these guys are doing it right! Ordered the 'Cellarman's Platter' and the pork rillette on that tray is not to be missed, their triple cream brie is also top notch (thank you!), and subtle touches like the honeycomb and fresh berries with lovely sausage slices rounded out a great charcuterie plate. We can't wait to return and send many of our beer loving buddies over from the neighborhood as well as guests lodging at the b&b. A new treat awaits at Humdinger Brewery (located almost next door to Doc Burnstein's Ice Cream Lab). Head on over-they officially open their doors this Tuesday, on St. Patrick's Day! read more

Went a little overboard on what we ordered. Too many fun choices. The "Poutine with Birria" would have been enough and more for the two of us. It was delicious. I tried the "Mushroom tacos". So good. Plenty of mushroom filling with great flavor. Hubby enjoyed the "Philly Cheese Steak". He gave it a 5/5. Tried a couple of the brews. I tried the Boots and Hose. A nice refreshing beer. Hubby had the McDermott's Red Ale. It was very good. Sat outside on a sunny day. Hope to go back but will eat a little less. Our server was great as well. read more

So I'm at the coast doing some card shopping, and we ask the owner of the local card shop where a good place to eat was, and he recommended Hummdingers. The restaurant is very simple with a bar, tables inside and out, and a few tvs. They were having a lunch special which included a burger, fries, and a drink so we ordered that. The waitress was polite and friendly, and the weather was great with the big open windows, letting the breeze in. Our food arrived, and everything tasted great. Burgers were cooked just like we asked, and our cups were never empty. This was a very pleasant eating experience, and I really enjoyed my meal. read more

My girlfriend and I were shopping in Arroyo Grande and decided to try this place to eat. We went inside and one of the girls sat us outside near the sidewalk but in the shade with comfortable chairs. She brought us water and menus right away. Then we waited and waited and waited. So I finally went inside and another girl said oh I thought she was taking care of you. So she came out and got our orders. We both wanted Philly cheesesteak on separate checks. She said no problem and I also ordered a Coke. She brought the Coke out she said do you want a glass with ice I said yes. Again I waited and waited then another girl came out and asked me the same thing and finally brought me a glass with ice. We got our meals and it was not Philly cheesesteaks it was a pastrami. Now I love my pastrami but it's not what I ordered. So then I believe her name is Laura Beth came out and said whoops put in the wrong order I'll change it. We said never mind we didn't wanna wait. So she said she'd take a discount off. We said OK. Then when the bill came it wasn't separate not a big deal. I know they were busy but the service was absolutely terrible. The food was good I think for pastrami $17 is a little pricey but I know a lot of things are. What I'm giving them only at to do to the service but the food was good. read more

There was entertainment, but it was not so good. Between the entertainment and the conversation, it was quite noisy. They specialize in craft beer and it is easy to ask to taste a few. Came for the live band, stayed for the food and beer! We came to see our friends perform on a Sunday around lunch time and didn't expect to get a drink or eat anything. After some time the menu started to get the best of us. So many great options and the beer was calling out names. We decided to do a flight since it was the first time we had Humdinger's beer. $14 for a hot chicken sandwich? Ehhhh okay. I asked what it comes with: nothing. Seriously? Wow okay so can I add the potatoe dippers or whatever you call them? Sure, $8 extra. Lol! Not sure why some of these breweries think they are a higher class dining experience or think their basic menu is deserving of price gouging customers. It's basic food. With that being said, the sandwhich was good but not worth the money and the quantity of food was almost laughable, maybe half of a standard chicken breast. I've begun to see this a lot with breweries but this is the first time I've seen the high prices and miniscule amount of food. Fish tacos were lacking salt. Now, if you add the Pico de gillo, it almost balances out but if you aren't a Pico fan, these tacos are in dire need of salt. The beer: Good. Typical $7 to $8 per glass. Cans to go. The service was great I must say that. Server was paying attention at all times even when I thought she wasn't. All in all, one n done for me. If you must try it, go for the beer not the food. Appreciate owner/manager/ yelp tender comments not getting defensive but this one's doesn't justify the price gouge unless you wanna eat there for lunch.
